Background / History
Ancient attainment and the North Sea
Longevity attained the Dao in the Mythological Era, long before He Mu’s emergence. To survive beyond a Heavenly Venerable’s ordinary lifespan, he severed his cultivation and withdrew from the world. By their first meeting, his true body was sealed within an enormous piece of immortal source in the North Sea Eye on Ziwei 2 3.
He devoted years to investigating the Immortal Corpse associated with Daode, Yuanshi, and Lingbao Heavenly Venerables. He claimed that ten thousand years of solitary meditation had yielded only limited clues to its whereabouts. His avatars also explored Lingbao’s scattered ruins, eventually discovering that Lingbao had survived his failed corpse dissolution 4 37.
Although he tried to locate Lingbao, he abandoned the search: finding a deliberately hidden Heavenly Venerable would require leaving his immortal source, and he did not wish to antagonize Lingbao 37.
Immortal Corpse expedition
After He Mu attained the Dao, Longevity invited him into the North Sea Eye and offered an opportunity connected to immortality. He recounted the Immortal Corpse’s history and proposed investigating its sealing ground together 2 3 4.
Traveling through an avatar, Longevity guided He Mu to a concealed blood-red world. He asked He Mu to break its formations, conserving his own strength while testing the new Heavenly Venerable. Inside, they found a giant severed arm restrained by Lingbao’s sword qi 5.
When black vapor escaped from the arm, Longevity manifested a towering Dharma form and pursued it with divine chains. Despite both men’s attacks, three streams escaped into the chaotic void. He Mu accused Longevity of holding back; Longevity replied that He Mu had also withheld something, then returned to the Northern Sea 6.
Dao discussion and defeat
During He Mu’s second lifetime, the two reunited to discuss their Great Daos. Longevity recognized the extraordinary scope of He Mu’s Wuliang Great Dao, but also identified its dependence on faith to connect its lofty conception to the Human Dao Domain. His own exposition centered on life, death, nirvana, and the hidden potential of the human body 33 34.
Their discussion inspired a sparring match at the Cosmic Frontier. Both used avatars restricted to roughly the level of newly attained Heavenly Venerables, avoiding the advantage of He Mu’s reigning true body. He Mu gained a narrow advantage in their opening exchange and won the final clash, leaving Longevity’s Dao Sword broken and his manifestation nearly exhausted 35 36.
After admitting defeat, Longevity requested White Tiger Divine Medicine essence in exchange for all his clues about the Lingbao Ruins. He revealed Lingbao’s attempt to absorb the Immortal Corpse’s origin through corpse dissolution, its failure, and Lingbao’s continued survival. He Mu paid him nine drops of the medicine’s essence 36 37.
Relocation to the Underworld
After He Mu departed, Longevity spent three hundred years absorbing the North Sea Eye’s remaining life essence, consuming the medicine, and adjusting his condition. He then traveled to the Underworld without leaving his immortal source or causing turmoil among living beings 44.
A thousand years after their Dao discussion, He Mu found Longevity’s North Sea residence empty. Using Faith Divine Heaven to trace his movements, he learned that Longevity had become one of the Underworld’s rulers. Longevity had turned toward Netherworld Venerable’s Dao as a possible path suited to his own pursuit of longevity 33 43 44.
He Mu subsequently inspected Changsheng Hall. Its formations converted the Underworld’s deathly essence into vitality, confirming Longevity’s intention to remain there long-term. According to Lunzhuan Supreme, he had already been secluded for three hundred years; He Mu judged that he was unlikely to awaken for at least ten thousand years 46 47.
Original history remembered by He Mu
He Mu’s memories describe a different future from the events established in this story. In that original history, Longevity survived for millions of years, helped Emperor Venerable establish the Heavenly Court, and repeatedly instigated dark turmoil after its collapse. His eventual death was tied to those actions. At their first meeting in this novel, He Mu specifically observed that Longevity had not yet brought calamity upon living beings 2.
Appearance
- Elderly Daoist: His first divine-sense manifestation wears clothing little different from an ordinary mountain-temple Daoist, despite the emperor qi surrounding him 2.
- Snow-white eyebrows: His later incarnation has long white eyebrows and the bearing of an elegant immortal sage 33.
- Sealed true body: An aged figure is visible within his massive immortal source stone, which radiates vitality and longevity Dao resonance 3 33.
Personality
Longevity is composed, shrewd, and deliberately inscrutable. He answers suspicion with courteous smiles, tests He Mu while preserving his own strength, and evaluates his visitor’s intentions before deciding how to handle requests. Even information he no longer needs becomes something he can exchange for a valuable medicine 3 5 33 36.
His pursuit of immortality outweighs concern for the wider world. After encountering the black qi, he loses interest in Lingbao’s dangerous legacy and regards the threat as He Mu’s problem rather than his own. His Dao emphasizes transcending oneself independently of heaven and other beings; He Mu interprets this detachment as a warning of the depravity remembered from the original history 33 34.
He remains proud enough to seek a fair contest with a worthy peer. Defeat briefly leaves him bitter and resigned, but he regains his composure, acknowledges He Mu’s superiority, and praises his potential to attain immortality amid the mortal world 34 35 36.
Abilities & Skills
Changsheng Great Dao
His Great Dao develops longevity through the transformations of life and death, nirvana, and the full potential of the human body 34.
- Unfolds the Five Great Secret Realms into a vast inner world.
- Opens Gates of Potential that release immense divine life energy.
- Uses the relationship between life and death to generate vitality; Changsheng Hall applies this principle to the Underworld’s deathly essence 34 47.
Nine Secrets: Zhe
Also called the Nirvana Sacred Art, Zhe is the supreme healing technique he created 2 35.
- Produces powerful life-giving immortal light.
- Overcomes the Dao-dissolving force targeting his primordial spirit during He Mu’s Feathered Tribulation Light attack.
- Does not make resistance cost-free: that exchange consumes more than half of his avatar’s life essence and destabilizes its cultivation 35.
Dao Bodies and Incarnations
Longevity can act outside his sealed true body through divine-sense manifestations and powerful Dao Bodies 2 3 33.
- His early incarnation surpasses what a ninth-heaven Quasi-Venerable could likely match, approaching alternative Dao attainment 3.
- Uses avatars to explore ruins, travel, discuss the Dao, and fight without exposing his true body.
- Can restrict an avatar’s cultivation for an evenly matched sparring contest 5 35 37.
Combat Techniques
- Life-Devouring Dao Fire: Drains an opponent’s vitality. He Mu loses somewhat less than half of his avatar’s Heavenly Venerable vitality extinguishing it 35.
- Longevity sword intent: Channels extreme life-and-death intent through the Changsheng Dao Sword, with an edge described as capable of separating reality from illusion 35.
- Dharma form and divine chains: Manifests a towering form and transforms immortal light into chains to pursue escaping black vapor 6.
Life-Preservation Methods
- Immortal source sealing: Staunches his blood and halts the expenditure of lifespan, making the emergence of his true body inconvenient 35.
- Medicine-dependent secret art: Requires White Tiger Divine Medicine essence for an unnamed life-prolonging technique; no resulting breakthrough is documented 36 44.
- Vitality-gathering formations: Supports secluded cultivation by converting destructive or deathly power into life-giving Dao vitality 43 47.

- Lingbao Heavenly Venerable — Subject of his investigations. He admires Lingbao’s attainments, discovers his survival, and ultimately avoids both his dangerous legacy and the risk of antagonizing him 5 33 37.
- Netherworld Venerable — His Dao becomes Longevity’s preferred subject of study after the Immortal Corpse expedition, helping explain his move to the Underworld 33 44.
- Lunzhuan Supreme / Zhuanlun — Fellow Underworld Supreme who receives He Mu and reports Longevity’s deep seclusion in Changsheng Hall 46 47.
Trivia
- His arrival in the Underworld occurs earlier than He Mu remembers from the original history. He Mu suspects his own influence but cannot confirm it 44.
- His residence helped sustain the North Sea’s life-giving Dao power against Guixu’s destructive force; that vitality nearly disappears after his departure 43.
- Both participants conceal the heavenly workings surrounding their sparring match, preventing Longevity’s defeat from becoming a widely recorded event 36.
