Background / History
Battle against the Immortal Corpse
Lingbao attained the Dao after Daode and Yuanshi Heavenly Venerables, both of whom had fought the same immortal calamity. After Yuanshi seemingly perished fighting it, the Underworld stole the Immortal Corpse. The corpse subsequently awakened a spirit and escaped its captors’ control 4.
During his third lifetime, Lingbao entered the Underworld and destroyed the complete Spiritually Awakened Immortal Corpse in a brutal battle. Its power exceeded the human Dao domain and approached the threshold of the immortal Dao. Lingbao suffered severe damage to his origin and a Great Dao wound, but forced himself to divide and seal its remains throughout the universe 4 37 42.
His Four Immortal-Slaying Swords earned their name from the immortal blood shed in this battle. The popular account that he entered the Immortal Domain was a rumor; Longevity Heavenly Venerable distinguished that story from the actual slaying of the Immortal Corpse 4.
Corpse Dissolution and Betrayal
Lingbao discovered black qi embedded in the corpse’s marrow but could not completely separate it from the imperishable flesh and bones. With his third lifetime nearing its end, he sealed the black qi alongside the corpse and began a corpse-dissolution transformation intended to heal his wounds, secure another lifetime, and open a road to immortality 37 42.
A thousand years into his slumber, a direct disciple inspecting the sealing grounds was beguiled by the black qi. The disciple contacted a Forbidden Zone Supreme, sabotaged the Immortal Platform Grand Formation, and attacked Lingbao using a forbidden artifact supplied by the black qi. Many disciples and followers died in the assault 42.
Despite his unhealed wounds, Lingbao awakened and defeated the attackers. He sealed his surviving disciples in the Chaos Minor World, concealed his Sea of Bitterness and Immortal Platform, and withdrew to the Chaos Dragon Nest. There, he used his remaining strength to inscribe formations, seal himself in immortal source, and send the nest deep into chaos 42.
The world believed his bodily dissolution had killed him. By the time Longevity told He Mu his history, roughly thirty thousand years had passed since that presumed death 4 37.
Discovery and Revival
Longevity’s investigations established that Lingbao had survived, though he could not locate him. His information directed He Mu to the star formed from Lingbao’s skull and Immortal Platform, later known as Heavenly Soldier 37 38.
He Mu found the primordial-spirit cocoon empty. By resonating with the platform, he awakened a phantom of Lingbao, clashed with its Dao Fruit, and exchanged scriptures with it. The encounter yielded Lingbao’s golden origin light, which guided him to the hidden Chaos Dragon Nest 38 39 40.
Lingbao’s first awakening nearly killed him: his spectacular release of sword qi exhausted his remaining power and left him unable to escape his coffin. He Mu supplied purified Great Dao origin power, allowing Lingbao to replenish himself, consume the coffin’s life essence, and draw strength from the surrounding chaos 41.
Lingbao thanked He Mu for saving his life and explained the betrayal. He Mu left White Tiger Divine Medicine essence to aid his further recovery 42.
Secret Alliance against Black Qi
Over the following thousand years, Lingbao repaired his Dao Fruit in concealment. He and He Mu deliberately kept his return secret, intending to lure Black Qi into a trap and attack together—one openly, the other from hiding. They also accounted for the danger of Black Qi joining forces with the Forbidden Zone Supremes 43.
As part of their preparations, He Mu sought out Lingbao’s sealed disciples. He located their small world on Heavenly Passage Ancient Star and entered it with Wenxin, awakening the lineage’s defenders, including Golden Spirit Holy Mother. His purpose was to deliver secret instructions for the coming war 47 49 50.
Appearance
- Face: Sharp contours, upward-slanting swordlike brows, and brilliant, star-like eyes 39 41.
- Hair: Black, bound high after his revival 41.
- Clothing: A solemn, majestic Heavenly Venerable Dao robe 41.
- Bearing: Imposing and authoritative; his phantom moves with strides likened to a dragon and tiger 39.
- Manifestation: His Immortal Platform phantom initially appears shrouded in dense chaos qi 39.
Personality
Lingbao was immensely proud of his three lifetimes of supremacy and his vast following. He considered his arrangements for transformation sufficient against every contingency, making the betrayal by a direct disciple particularly painful. Recounting it to He Mu brings visible anger, gloom, and grief 42.
His ambition did not prevent him from protecting others. He fought the Immortal Corpse as the reigning Heavenly Venerable, sealed its remains despite his wounds, and sheltered his surviving disciples after the attack on his Immortal Platform 37 42.
He openly acknowledges his debt to He Mu, insisting that the younger Heavenly Venerable truly saved his life. Following his recovery, he accepts a concealed role in their joint plan rather than immediately announcing his return 42 43.
Abilities & Skills
Nine Secrets: Zu and Formation Mastery
- Regarded as the supreme formation expert across the ages 5 38.
- Used Nine Secrets: Zu to refine the Four Immortal-Slaying Swords and construct his unparalleled killing formation 4.
- Left sword formations sealing the Immortal Corpse’s scattered remains; He Mu encountered one binding a giant severed arm 5.
- Concealed entire secret realms and the Chaos Dragon Nest by obscuring heavenly secrets 42 43.
- His unattended sealing formation could be broken by He Mu, who distinguished it from a formation personally directed by Lingbao 5.
Immortal-Slaying Sword Arts
- Renowned particularly for slaughter, rather than definitively established as the strongest combatant of all eras 4.
- His phantom combines the four swords into a sword wheel accompanied by visions of slain immortals, fallen gods, mountains of corpses, and seas of blood 39.
- Upon awakening, his sword qi cleaves the surrounding chaos and prevents it from closing for an extended period 41.
- After recovery, his combat prowess slightly surpasses He Mu’s, despite remaining below his own former peak 43.
Corpse-Dissolution Transformation
Lingbao’s method divided his body into five secret realms, each assigned a function in absorbing the Immortal Corpse’s origin and eventually reuniting 37.
| Secret Realm | Intended Function |
|---|---|
| Sea of Bitterness | Evolve countless chaos gods and demons whose Daos would bear his Dao Fruit and help digest the immortal origin. |
| Dao Palace | Accumulate five-element true qi, nourish his imperial life, and support the Sea of Bitterness. |
| Four Extremes | Become heavenly pillars supporting his Great Dao and stabilizing his attainments. |
| Dragon Transformation | Connect the five secret realms in preparation for reunification. |
| Immortal Platform | House and nurture his primordial spirit, produce Immortal Platform Divine Liquid, and serve as a Dao marker linking to the body’s great dragon. |
- The Four Immortal-Slaying Swords and their array diagram were intended to guard his dissolving body and Dao 37.
- The method failed after sabotage; it did not establish that Lingbao became an immortal 37 42.
- Its principles remained valuable to He Mu as a reference for his own pursuit of immortality 38.
Lingbao Immortal Scripture
- Created a supreme scripture expressing his own Great Dao 39.
- His phantom’s discourse transmitted the Sea of Bitterness and Immortal Platform volumes to He Mu, together with most of the true essence of Nine Secrets: Zu 39.
- His Dao is associated with returning all things to Guixu and their source 43 45.
Chaos Absorption and Recovery
- Uses formation patterns to draw upon chaos’s creative power and preserve his life while sealed 40.
- After receiving He Mu’s assistance, gathers chaos qi into eight colossal dragons and swallows them to replenish his strength 41.
- Tempers his Dao body through lightning tribulations and repairs his Dao Fruit with primal chaos qi 43.
- His original sealed recovery was insufficient: Lingbao believed he would eventually have died without He Mu’s intervention 42.
