Background / History

Holy Son and contender for Holy Lord

In his youth, Danyangzi was a Holy Son of the Yaoguang Holy Land. He competed for leadership against another Holy Son, who later became the previous Holy Lord and the master of Li Daoqing. Their battle lasted three days and three nights; Danyangzi lost by a single move and became a supreme elder instead 8 32.

The defeat remained a lifelong regret. Several of his disciples later became Holy Sons, but none attained the position of Holy Lord. He eventually hoped that Taiyi would fulfill this ambition 32.

Danyangzi lived for more than three thousand years. Two Little Medicine Kings, each more than fifty thousand years old, extended his lifespan by four hundred years. By his final years, ordinary treasures and medicines no longer benefited him; only exceptional substances such as a genuine Medicine King, Earth Life Fruit, or Immortal Divine Medicine could prolong his life. He attributed his failure to sever the Dao to both limited aptitude and the suppression imposed by heaven and earth 9.

Discovery of the Ruthless One’s Lineage

Several hundred years before meeting Taiyi, Danyangzi discovered a dangerous faction hidden within Yaoguang. Its strength and hidden reserves frightened him before he could investigate fully. Unable to confront it alone, he left the holy land and lived in seclusion 8 9.

Before his death, he revealed to Taiyi that this faction was the Ruthless One’s Lineage. He hoped to nurture a future Great Emperor capable of purging it and strengthening Yaoguang’s foundations. One of the lineage’s later pursuers confirmed that Danyangzi had sensed their intentions and fled just as they were preparing to move against him 9 13 36.

Taking Taiyi as his final disciple

After secretly observing Taiyi, Danyangzi seized him through the void and brought him to his mountain cave. He recognized the Sun Body and Sun True Scripture, deduced Taiyi’s descent from the Sun Saint Emperor, and warned that his talent and scripture would attract powerful enemies 8.

Taiyi initially distrusted Yaoguang, but accepted Danyangzi as his master after judging that the elder was probably not aligned with the Ruthless One’s Lineage. Danyangzi imparted the Primordial Origin Scripture, providing both a complementary cultivation method and a means of concealing Taiyi’s constitution and scripture 9.

For roughly a year, Danyangzi taught cultivation, formations, and secret techniques while supplying pure source. He emphasized perfecting each stage rather than advancing quickly. He watched Taiyi’s Calamity of Lostness without intervening, trusting his disciple to overcome it independently 10 11.

After Taiyi reached the Other Shore, Danyangzi gathered rare medicines and mighty-expert-level savage beast blood for his nine transformations. Obtaining the blood further exhausted his dwindling vitality. The medicinal bath he prepared enabled Taiyi to complete five transformations, and he left supplies for the remaining four 11 12 20.

Final instructions and death

By the end of their time together, Danyangzi had recognized that Taiyi possessed a Sun Sacred Body combining the characteristics of the Sun Physique and Desolate Ancient Sacred Body. He entrusted his disciple with his lifetime collection, protective treasures, letters, and supreme elder token, then transmitted information about Yaoguang and its hidden threats through divine sense 12 13.

His final charge was for Taiyi to conceal his constitution until sufficiently strong and eventually purge Yaoguang’s demonic factions. After Taiyi agreed, Danyangzi forcibly sent him away and sealed the cave, entombing himself within it. Taiyi mourned his passing, recognizing that his master had prolonged his final struggle chiefly to complete his instruction 13.

Appearance

  • Face: Deeply wrinkled, with nearly all his teeth missing; his smile initially unsettles Taiyi 8.
  • Hair and beard: White in his first appearance, with almost all of both falling out as death approaches 8 12.
  • Build: Stooped, withered, and increasingly frail 11 12.
  • Eyes: Usually cloudy, but capable of flashing with a sharp, piercing gleam 8 11.
  • Presence: Carries an oppressive aura of decay and approaching death despite retaining immense divine power 8 13.

Personality

Danyangzi is perceptive and pragmatic. He notices Taiyi’s fear of Yaoguang and recognizes that the youth is withholding information, but does not force a confession. He also candidly admits that, in his younger years, the Sun True Scripture might have tempted him to seize it by any means necessary 8.

As a teacher, he is generous but demanding about foundations. He gives Taiyi unrestricted instruction, resources, and his lifetime collection, yet repeatedly discourages rushed breakthroughs. His willingness to let Taiyi face the Calamity of Lostness alone reflects confidence in his disciple rather than indifference 10 11 12.

He remains loyal to Yaoguang despite its corruption. His ambitions combine the unresolved desire to see his lineage produce a Holy Lord with the hope of repaying the holy land by removing its hidden enemies. Near death, he respects Taiyi’s independence, allowing him to choose between entering Yaoguang immediately and gaining experience outside first 9 12 32.

Abilities & Skills

Primordial Origin Scripture and Holy Light Technique

Danyangzi transmits Yaoguang’s strongest scripture and guides Taiyi in its associated secret techniques 9 12.

  • Recognizes its compatibility with the intensely yang-aligned Sun True Scripture 9.
  • Explains that it can mask the aura of Taiyi’s constitution and inherited scripture 9.
  • Guides Taiyi in learning techniques normally beyond a Sea of Bitterness cultivator’s qualifications, including the Primordial Origin Holy Light Technique 12.

Cultivation Instruction and Constitution Assessment

His experience fills gaps left by Taiyi’s solitary study of the Sun True Scripture 10.

  • Identifies Taiyi’s awakened Sun Body and inherited scripture through observation 8.
  • Assesses the strength of Taiyi’s Bitter Sea, physique, vitality, and foundation 10.
  • Later recognizes the unprecedented fusion constituting the Sun Sacred Body 12.
  • Cannot easily penetrate Taiyi’s mastered concealment technique, despite personally testing it 12.

Formations and Divine Sense

Danyangzi is proficient in formation patterns and shares both knowledge and practical experience with Taiyi 10.

  • Transmits information directly through a touch to Taiyi’s brow 12.
  • Provides knowledge of Yaoguang, his senior disciples, hidden enemies, and locations in the Central Plains 12 13 32 36.
  • Seizes Taiyi through the void, later transports him far from the cave, and seals the abode with powerful divine force 8 13.

Medicinal Preparation and Artifact Refinement

Danyangzi prepares the medicinal bath used for Taiyi’s Other Shore transformations and crafts treasures to protect his future cultivation 11 12.

  • Collects blood from mighty-expert-level savage beasts and removes its killing aura 11.
  • Disperses the remaining beast spirits with casual slaps and summons Dao Fire to brew the medicine 12.
  • Forges a replica Dragon-Patterned Black Gold Cauldron and specially refines a Great Power-level Guardian Forbidden Weapon 12 13.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Danyangzi leaves his collection and protective items to Taiyi before his death 12.

  • Guardian Forbidden Weapon — Temporarily amplifies combat strength, allowing Dao Palace-level Taiyi to fight Dragon Transformation experts. Controlled, brief activations permit at least nine uses; prolonged, maximum amplification generally permits only three or fewer 47 48.
  • Replica Dragon-Patterned Black Gold Cauldron — Forged centuries earlier from rare materials and refined within the genuine Emperor Weapon. Used for Taiyi’s medicinal baths; powerful, but inferior to a King Divine Weapon 13 49.
  • Blazing Sun Bow — An artifact Danyangzi used in his youth. Wang Peng recognizes it in Taiyi’s possession and recalls unsuccessfully asking his master for it 32.
  • Divine Movement Talisman — Enables Taiyi to escape pursuing Yin-Yang Sect elders 27 33.
  • World-Breaking Talisman — Obtained by Danyangzi from an ancient ruin in his early years and left to Taiyi as a safeguard 36.
  • Mystic treasure — Cuts off heavenly secrets, preventing divination of Taiyi’s identity or location 50.
  • Supreme elder token — A golden secret artifact marked “Yaoguang” and “Supreme”; its pressure authenticates Taiyi’s connection to the holy land 17.
  • Source and transformation materials — Hundreds of thousands of jin of source, rare materials, beast blood, and medicines support Taiyi’s continued cultivation 12 13 20.
  • Letters and Sage’s Notes — His letter asks Taiyi’s senior brothers to support him; the notes later help Taiyi identify a weapon made from Ancient Sage bone dust 32 48.

Relationships

  • Taiyi — Final personal disciple and intended successor to his ambitions for Yaoguang. Taiyi’s initial caution develops into sincere attachment and gratitude 9 12 13.
  • Li Xuan — Eldest disciple; becomes a mighty cultivator and supreme elder of Yaoguang 32.
  • Wang Peng — Fifth disciple. Danyangzi regrets his stalled cultivation after damage to his Dao heart and leaves him a letter requesting support for Taiyi 32.
  • Other earlier disciples — Danyangzi took six disciples before Taiyi. Apart from Wang Peng, they became supreme elders; some had previously held Holy Son positions 32.
  • Previous Yaoguang Holy Lord — Former rival who defeated him by one move in their contest for leadership 8 32.
  • Li Daoqing — Current Holy Lord and disciple of Danyangzi’s former rival; addresses Danyangzi as his martial uncle 8 35.
  • Ruthless One’s Lineage — Hidden enemies whose power drove him into seclusion; he entrusts their eventual eradication to Taiyi 13 36.
