Background and History

Rise of Nine Nether Mountain

Gai Jiuyou began with a False Spiritual Root and no Dao Seed, yet cultivated the Nine Nether Heavenly Demon Body. She raised Nine Nether Mountain from a small fishing-village gang into a Demon Sect power capable of confronting the Immortal Alliance. Her achievements also included creating the Nine Nether Alchemy Scripture, an alchemical method said to rival the defining scriptures of the continent’s major sects 156 157.

According to Feng Xian’er, betrayal by her beloved preceded Gai Jiuyou’s fall into demonic cultivation and revenge against the Immortal Alliance. She destroyed three of its seven great sects and became infamous for nearly annihilating the alliance overnight 150 157.

The Thousand-Year Seal

Tianjizi, Qingkong Que, and an ancestor of the Gu Household participated in suppressing Gai Jiuyou. Qingkong Que’s Taiji Seal and the Gu ancestor’s Heavenly Star Seal contributed to her imprisonment, while Tianjizi nearly burned her to death with the Nine-Phoenix Heart-Exterminating Mirror 152 153 154 183.

Her confinement concealed a larger ambition. Before being sealed, she prepared three demon seeds using her blood essence. She intended to temper them through the Nine Yang Cauldron and unite them with the mirror’s phoenix heavenly fire, giving them one-third of her true body’s power and enabling her escape and transformation 183.

Lin Shisan correctly deduced that she had willingly accepted imprisonment to pursue immortality. Rather than merely destroying the Immortal Alliance, she wanted to rise above it and prove herself to the person who had betrayed her 184.

Disciples Taught Through Dreams

Twenty years before Lin Shisan’s investigation, rumors claimed that Gai Jiuyou had taught eight disciples from the Immortal Alliance’s Eight Sects through dreams. Known as the Demon Sect Eight Sons, they were said to offer another escape route: once all eight reached Yellow Dragon Ninth Stage, their converging mirror images could release her true body. The alliance organized a hunt for them, in which Xue Yaotian participated 343.

Appearance

Gai Jiuyou’s manifestations vary, while her reconstructed Dharma body has distinct dark-golden features 198 207 369.

• Early manifestations: Long dark hair, bright eyes, graceful brows, and a silvery, bell-like voice with a captivating quality 151 184 198.
• Clothing: Appears in a long purple dress beneath the moon and later in a green lotus dress 198 207.
• During her escape: Displays long dark-red hair amid the Nine Yang Pavilion’s wind and fire 354.

Personality

Gai Jiuyou is domineering, mercurial, and quick to retaliate against humiliation. She threatens Lin Shisan with torture after losing an energy hand and attacks Gu Mengli partly to avenge the Gu ancestor’s role in sealing her. Her amusement can turn abruptly into tangible killing intent 151 152 153.

She treats knowledge, protection, and instruction as bargaining assets. Her schemes include using an alchemy scripture to provoke conflict within the Danyang Sect, concealing her escaped divine sense from most followers, and negotiating with people from both the Demon Sect and Immortal Alliance 168 181 198.

Her hostility toward romantic devotion reflects unresolved hurt. She calls Lin Shisan a hopeless romantic, briefly revealing sadness, and is deeply affected when he identifies the personal motive behind her pursuit of immortality 168 184.

She also recognizes courage and talent. Lin Shisan’s defiance earns her respect, while his retaliation against Xiao Han amuses her. After defeating Yue Wushuang, she acknowledges her former maid’s achievements, spares her, and leaves Nine Nether Mountain under her control 183 184 202 371.

A demonic technique used to immobilize opponents, devour their power, and facilitate possession 151 153 354.

Story Role and Major Arcs

Bargains from the Nine Yang Cauldron

Gai Jiuyou first offers Lin Shisan revenge for his father in exchange for release, then tries to seize his evolving Taiji Wheel. His seals and the Little Black Cauldron frustrate her attacks, while Feng Xian’er and other powerful cultivators suppress her projection 150 151 153 154 155.

After a strand of divine sense escapes, she inhabits Gu Mengli and forces further negotiations. She exchanges alchemy instruction for help obtaining the Nine-Phoenix Heart-Exterminating Mirror, while threatening Gu Mengli and Hu Niu to ensure cooperation 167 168.

Lin Shisan subsequently uncovers her immortality scheme and negotiates protections for his loved ones, innocents, and Gu Mengli. Those terms do not end her coercion: she later threatens Long Yan’er when demanding the mirror 183 184 190.

Heavenly Revelation Secret Realm

Gai Jiuyou trades a route to the Ancient Lightning Pool for Lin Shisan’s help retrieving her demon seed. She also arranges for Mu Ling’er to take the seed because Lin Shisan cannot safely carry it past the Immortal Alliance guards 198 214.

Little Nine’s awakening triggers a destructive fight with her projection. Their battle leaves both weakened before the secret realm’s Eye of Rules appears and suppresses them 207 208.

The Failed Release and Loss of Her Head

Lin Shisan returns a Dao Seed to the Nine Yang Cauldron, strengthening Gai Jiuyou and worsening the seal’s condition. He later offers her freedom in exchange for killing Qingxuan, with Cold Moon Peak protected from harm 338 345.

During the battle over the seal, Gai Jiuyou nearly escapes but faces renewed suppression by Han Yansong, Bai Ziyin, and Feng Xian’er. She severs her own head to reach Zi Yuner, only for the Eternal Night Demon Emperor’s Creation Cauldron to destroy it. Her surviving spirit enters Zi Yuner instead 353 354 355.

Reconstruction and Mu Ling’er’s Revival

Gai Jiuyou offers to preserve Mu Ling’er’s apparently dead body while Lin Shisan seeks the means to restore her soul. A Soul Contract binds her promises to Zi Yuner, including Mu Ling’er’s full revival 361 363.

The search for her hidden artifact leads back to Nine Nether Mountain and Yue Wushuang’s ambush. Gai Jiuyou reaches her concealed space, merges with her second Dao Seed, and uses Yue Wushuang’s weapon to perfect her Dharma body. She then awakens the Ten Hells Gate masters 368 369 370 371 372.

At Arctic Snow Mountain, she learns that another Dao Seed has merged with the mountain itself. She later helps Lin Shisan return Mu Ling’er’s soul to her body; the awakened woman identifies herself as Zhantai Xian and mistakes Lin Shisan for Senior Brother Tian 372 377.

The Eastern Road

Gai Jiuyou advises Lin Shisan on using the Reincarnation Mirror to investigate the road associated with the vanished Lingxi Sect. When he later prepares to return to the Danyang Sect, she warns that his public-enemy status makes the journey a likely trap and agrees that Zhantai Xian is a safer companion than herself or Zi Yuner 380 382.
