Background / History

Military Service and First Meeting with Ye Xunzhi

Ye Chuyan joined the military under Shi Che’s supervision, and the two became close friends. He later served as a Special Forces captain, commanding teammates during armed rescue operations 35 242 254.

When Ye Qi’an introduces him to Ye Xunzhi, Chuyan offers to help his newly returned younger sister. He initially assumes her request for remote bomb-disposal guidance is a game, but becomes genuinely interested when he realizes the bomb is real. Her competence—and movements resembling his own—make him regard her as a kindred spirit 90 91.

He agrees to tell Ye Qi’an that he guided her through the disposal, despite recognizing that she barely needed instruction. After learning that she intends to confront someone targeting Qi’an, he travels from the Military District to an abandoned school to watch her deal with Song Wei 91.

Cruise Ship Mission

After helping extinguish Ye Xunzhi’s kitchen fire, Chuyan offers her paid work on a potentially dangerous mission with Shi Che and Shi Yao. Aboard the cruise ship, he discovers impostor crew members installing bombs 112 115.

When an iron barrier prevents him from reaching the bomb installers, Xunzhi provokes them into approaching it. Chuyan knocks both unconscious, then enters the sealed area through a ventilation duct with Shi Che. The team subsequently works through bombs distributed around the ship and helps overpower pirates in the communications room 115 116 119 122.

Chuyan also deduces that the pirate attack is not ordinary robbery: the ship’s security, Country M’s involvement, and the pirates’ weapons point to outside support and an attempt to obtain weapons research 119.

Family Life and Promotion

During their stay in City H, Old Master Ye assigns Chuyan to supervise Xunzhi’s studies. He initially enjoys tormenting her with review materials and a candlelit study session monitored by their grandfather. After struggling with college questions himself, however, he abandons the lesson and takes her out for barbecue 130 131.

Their outings lead to an encounter with one of his former instructors and a night-fishing trip during which Xunzhi hooks an injured undercover officer. The siblings help the officer, but a hotel inspection briefly makes Chuyan a suspect in the assault. The officer’s explanation clears them, though Qiao Man still scolds Chuyan for taking his sister fishing at night 131 132.

Before New Year, classified information brought back by Xunzhi earns Chuyan an immediate military promotion and pay raise, bypassing at least three more years of work. His superior also grants him leave to spend the holiday with his family 198.

Country X: Previous Timeline

In the earlier timeline remembered by Xunzhi, Chuyan’s Special Forces unit is deployed to Country X to evacuate overseas Chinese. His group comes under attack from an internationally notorious mercenary organization, and everyone in the group—including the evacuees—is reported dead 240.

Xunzhi travels to Country X and retraces his route with Shi Che. She never finds his body; the only personal item she recovers is his military cap, identifiable by the name she had sewn inside it 240.

Country X: Rescue and the Returned Fourth Brother

In the current timeline, Chuyan again leads a rescue operation in Country X. Eileen arranges bomb-carrying hostages as part of a plan to eliminate him, but Xunzhi’s intervention helps foil the trap. Chuyan reaches the third hostage vehicle, avoids a sniper attack, and helps extract Old Master Xi 242 246 247.

When terrorists ambush the convoy, Chuyan orders the third vehicle to continue toward the port while he and Shi Che protect the remaining hostages. After Old Master Xi is abducted, he withdraws his team into a building to regroup 248 249.

The arc also involves a time-displaced version of Chuyan from Xunzhi’s previous timeline. Ren Chen later explains that he brought this Chuyan from immediately before his death to protect her. His identity becomes clear through two familiar habits: offering her lemon-flavored Swiss candy and remembering the name she had sewn onto his headgear—neither of which belonged to her relationship with the current timeline’s Chuyan 257 258 261 278.

The returned Chuyan accompanies Xunzhi into a warehouse, where they witness a transaction involving the Amari Weapon Virus. He kills Michar and secures the briefcase, but Eileen detonates the warehouse’s bombs. Chuyan shields Xunzhi from a red-hot section of the door, suffering fatal burns and internal injuries 260 261.

Before disappearing, he confirms that he is her former Fourth Brother and says that he made a deal for the time he had left. Meanwhile, the current Chuyan survives and searches the blast site with Shi Che 261.

Return Home

The current Chuyan reunites with Xunzhi aboard the evacuation ship and questions Feilanz and Hu Feiwei about how she reached Country X. When his questions later make her cry, he stops pressing her and asks his commander and teammates not to question her either 279 280.

He returns home with her and remains alive at the main-story ending, welcoming her back alongside the reunited Ye family 280 289.

Appearance

  • Usually presents a gentle smile and a warm, approachable manner; his first greeting gives the impression of a friendly boy next door 90.
  • Wears military uniforms and protective headgear during operations, and uses enemy clothing and a hood when infiltrating a hostile base 242 254 258.

Personality

Chuyan’s friendliness initially conceals emotional distance. Xunzhi describes his warmth as superficial until he accepts someone, and he first treats her request for help as something to humor rather than take seriously. Her bomb-disposal skills change his attitude by giving him the excitement of meeting someone like himself 90 91.

He enjoys trouble, gossip, and competitive teasing. He tries to encourage Xunzhi’s confrontation with her brother’s enemy, cheats during their card game while accusing her of doing the same, and eagerly listens to revelations about Shi Che’s family. His teasing often backfires, particularly when Xunzhi threatens revenge or exposes his own behavior 91 92 116 130.

His early understanding of relationships is strongly transactional. He views people as independent individuals connected by interests and struggles to understand self-sacrifice, even within families. Shi Che’s devotion to Shi Yao challenges that outlook 116.

His bond with Xunzhi gradually becomes more sincere. During their fishing trip, he realizes that she has brought unexpected peace and novelty into his life, reducing his former appetite for thrills at the edge of the law. Later, he respects her reluctance to explain her secrets and prioritizes her emotional well-being over obtaining answers 132 257 280.
