Background / History

Academy Years

Obito was an optimistic, helpful child who respected his teachers and elders, helped elderly women cross the street, and dreamed of becoming Hokage. His academic performance was poor, however, and other young Uchiha treated him as a disgrace to the clan 5 55 139 238.

Jin first became involved with him after finding several clan members beating him in an Academy bathroom. Jin defeated the bullies but immediately mocked Obito’s weakness and fixation on romance. Obito consequently added defeating Jin to his existing ambition of surpassing Kakashi. Rin initially mistook Jin for the bully, but later brought Obito along to spend time with him 55.

Jin repeatedly warned Obito to train seriously enough to protect his comrades. He also cautioned him against abandoning his original dream after a comrade’s death. Obito initially dismissed these remarks as arrogance; after losing Rin, he remembered them as warnings he had failed to heed 55 69.

Presumed Death and Madara’s Influence

During the Third Shinobi World War, Obito was trapped beneath a boulder and believed he would die. He gave Kakashi his remaining exposed eye, and Konoha subsequently regarded him as dead. He survived under Madara’s care, with half his body replaced by White Zetsu cells 55 69 72.

Obito later witnessed Rin deliberately impale herself on Kakashi’s Lightning Blade. Kirigakure had made her the Three-Tails’ jinchūriki to unleash the beast inside Konoha, and she chose death to prevent that outcome. Her death awakened Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan and left him receptive to Madara’s promise of a world without suffering 69 84.

Madara had deliberately selected Obito as a susceptible successor and manipulated events to make him despair. Before dying, he imprinted his plan and techniques into Obito’s memory and introduced Black Zetsu as the embodiment of his will. Obito then adopted Madara’s name and began carrying out the Eye of the Moon Plan 69.

Appearance

Obito grows from a spiky-haired boy wearing goggles into a masked young shinobi whose injuries have severely disfigured half his face 5 161.

  • Height: Approximately 175 centimeters at thirteen, roughly matching twelve-year-old Jin 71.
  • Face: One half is crisscrossed with scars, revealed when his mask shatters during the Amegakure battle 161.
  • Eye: Usually exposes a single Sharingan through his mask; his other original eye remains with Kakashi until Jin takes it 72 169.
  • Mask: Initially wears a self-made yellow spiral mask with one eyehole; later appearances describe an orange spiral mask 69 236 238.
  • Clothing: Conceals his body beneath extensive wrappings and robes; later wears Akatsuki’s black robe patterned with red clouds 71 127 238.

Personality

Obito’s early kindness contrasts sharply with his later willingness to sacrifice civilians, comrades, and former mentors. He justifies these deaths by insisting that everyone can live happily in the world created by Infinite Tsukuyomi. Even Kushina, his teacher’s wife, becomes an acceptable sacrifice 55 84.

His devotion to Rin remains central to his decisions. He blames himself for failing to protect her, preserves her body, and speaks to her about his plans and frustrations. When Jin suggests reviving her instead of replacing the world, Obito briefly wavers, then insists that the world itself must change so she will never suffer again 71 84 135 138.

Obito is proud of Kamui and frequently treats opponents as helpless before it. He enjoys taunting Jin, especially when their usual dynamic reverses and Jin loses his composure. Nevertheless, being nearly killed makes him more cautious: he begins using Izanagi preemptively and keeping outside Jin’s ocular technique range 95 151 155 156.

He also minimizes his own betrayals. He regards conspiring with Hiruzen against Jin as a “little prank,” while resenting Jin’s attempts to kill him. His desire to recruit his former companion eventually becomes bitterness, sharpened by the belief that Jin valued Shisui’s friendship but never truly valued his 129 149 231.

Abilities & Skills

Kamui

Kamui is Obito’s Mangekyō Sharingan space-time ability, allowing him to move himself, other people, and portions of his body into a separate dimension 87 97 135.

  • Intangibility: Transfers his body into the Kamui Dimension so physical attacks pass through him 97.
  • Transport and confinement: Takes Jin and Kushina into the dimension, imprisons Kurenai there, and stores the defeated Roshi inside it 87 135 238 240.
  • Escape: Repeatedly withdraws through a vortex centered on his right eye, escaping before Minato and Kakashi can stop him 151 182.
  • Duration limit: Can maintain continuous intangibility for five minutes 130 155.
  • Attack limitation: Cannot attack opponents while intangible; Sakumo identifies the instant he becomes solid as a counterattack opportunity 130.
  • Dimensional limitation: Cannot use intangibility while already inside the Kamui Dimension 87.
  • Direct counter: Jin’s Heavenly Punishment Edict can prohibit space-time ninjutsu within its domain. Obito later avoids this by maintaining distance 95 151.

Hashirama Cells and Bodily Reconstruction

His transplanted cells provide exceptional recovery and support his repeated use of ocular techniques 72 95 151.

  • Regenerates a deep abdominal slash that would leave an ordinary shinobi near death 95.
  • Replaces his severed right arm by cutting an arm from White Zetsu and attaching it to his body 74.
  • Rapidly heals injuries sustained during Jin and Shisui’s combined attack 161.
  • Can replace eyes within seconds, an advantage attributed to his Hashirama cells 157.

Izanagi

Obito uses Izanagi as a safeguard against otherwise fatal attacks 95 97.

  • Survives Jin’s beheading after activating the technique in advance 95 97.
  • Reflexively activates it when he suspects Jin is about to disable Kamui in the Forest of Death 131.
  • Develops a habit of preparing it whenever an unfamiliar ocular ability or suspicious situation threatens him 155.

Sharingan Genjutsu

Obito uses his Mangekyō Sharingan’s genjutsu to control the Fourth Mizukage, Karatachi Yagura, governing Kirigakure through him 84.

  • Imposes the Blood Mist graduation system, forcing Academy classmates to kill one another 84.
  • Orders purges against kekkei genkai clans, including the Kaguya and Yuki clans 84.
  • Eventually loses this control when Jin dispels the genjutsu on Yagura 239.

Fire Release

Obito possesses large-scale offensive Fire Release techniques inherited alongside Madara’s Uchiha teachings 69 180 181.

  • Majestic Destroyer Flame: Unleashes a battlefield-spanning sea of fire against Jin’s Susanoo; Jin’s sin-burning flames consume it 180.
  • Blast Wave Wild Dance: Produces a spiraling fire tornado, combined with Kakuzu’s Wind Release during a coordinated assault 181.

Close-Quarters Combat

Obito fights with kunai and taijutsu, using intangibility to control when opponents can engage him 72.

  • Fights Jin to a standstill during their cemetery confrontation while Kamui is available 72.
  • Falls decisively below Jin in close combat once Heavenly Punishment Edict blocks his space-time ability 95 132.
  • Defeats Roshi in approximately half an hour, remaining unharmed by attacks even after Roshi uses Tailed Beast Transformation 240.

Recruitment and Intelligence

Obito recruits powerful shinobi while using White Zetsu’s extensive surveillance network to locate targets and monitor threats 171 176 240.

  • Orders continuous surveillance of Jin while assessing whether he remains a viable recruit 121.
  • Has White Zetsu keep the jinchūriki under long-term observation before capture operations begin 240.
  • Conceals his Infinite Tsukuyomi objective from Nagato, whose own plan centers on deterring war through possession of the tailed beasts 175.

Susanoo Limitation

  • Despite possessing a Mangekyō Sharingan, Obito cannot deploy Susanoo during the battles shown. Orochimaru openly contrasts this with Jin’s power, and Obito recognizes that Jin’s acquisition of his other eye has prevented him from retrieving it 196 198.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spiral mask — Conceals his identity while he impersonates Madara; his original yellow mask is self-made 69 71.
  • Akatsuki robe — Black clothing patterned with red clouds 238.
  • Kunai — Used in close combat against Jin and the reincarnated Konoha shinobi 72 129.
  • Explosive tags — Attaches one to Naruto before throwing the baby toward Jin to interrupt his attack 95.
  • Rin’s coffin — Initially preserves Rin inside Kamui in a coffin described as crystal and later as ice. After Jin discovers her, Obito relocates her body to a more secluded place and uses the empty coffin as a seat 84 135 238.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — Teammate and the girl he loves. Her death precipitates his rejection of reality, while her preserved body remains the focus of his private mourning 69 84 135 138.
  • Uchiha Jin — Academy acquaintance whom Obito considers a friend and repeatedly attempts to recruit. Their relationship deteriorates into mutual hostility, with Obito eventually planning to eliminate him 55 121 183 231.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Former teammate and childhood rival; recipient of Obito’s eye. Kakashi continues hoping to bring him back, but Obito rejects his concern and declares his former self dead 55 72 161 169.

  • Kushina Uzumaki — His teacher’s wife and the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki. Obito targets her childbirth despite acknowledging their former connection 84 87.
  • Madara Uchiha — Rescuer, trainer, and manipulator whose identity Obito adopts. After Madara’s reincarnation, Obito resents his orders but continues cooperating because their goals align 69 228.
  • Black Zetsu — Intelligence partner and supposed embodiment of Madara’s will. Unknown to Obito, Black Zetsu’s true purpose is to exploit the plan to rescue his mother 69 74 84.
  • Nagato / Pain — Akatsuki collaborator. Their cooperation rests on related but distinct visions of peace, and both remain wary of the other 151 175.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Opponent whom Obito later recruits after the exposure of his secret genjutsu use on Jin. Obito attempts to exploit their damaged friendship to eliminate both men 153 168 183.
  • Orochimaru — Akatsuki associate and assigned partner for tailed-beast capture. Obito finds his commentary infuriating; Orochimaru privately prepares to abandon him if Jin appears 196 228 240.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Cemetery Reunion

Obito visits Rin’s cenotaph and encounters Jin, who immediately attacks him. His attempt to recruit Jin under Madara’s identity fails when Jin names him outright and rejects Infinite Tsukuyomi. Their confrontation costs Obito his right arm, which he replaces after returning to Akatsuki 71 72 74.

Kirigakure and the Nine-Tails’ Rampage

Blaming Kirigakure for Rin’s death, Obito controls Yagura and turns the village against its own students and bloodline clans. He then schedules an attack on Konoha for Kushina’s childbirth, exploiting the expected weakening of her seal 84.

During the attack, Jin blocks Kamui with Heavenly Punishment Edict. Obito regenerates from an abdominal wound and uses Naruto, rigged with an explosive tag, to force Jin onto the defensive. Jin subsequently traps him with Karmic Flames Burn Sin and beheads him, but Obito survives through a preemptive Izanagi and escapes 95 97.

Hiruzen’s Conspiracy

Obito and Black Zetsu cooperate with Hiruzen against Jin, but Hiruzen intends to kill them as well. When the confrontation reaches the Forest of Death, Obito fights the reincarnated Hashirama and Sakumo while exploiting Kamui’s defensive advantages 117 121 127 129 130.

He also hopes that being seen beside Jin will make Konoha mistake them for allies, forcing Jin to defect. Later, inside Kamui, he renews his recruitment attempt and refuses Jin’s suggestion to abandon the plan and revive Rin. Jin subsequently reveals Obito’s identity to Minato 133 135 137 138 139.

Battle in Amegakure

Obito abandons recruitment in favor of eliminating Jin’s group alongside Pain. He attacks Shisui, initially mocking his lack of a Mangekyō, only to witness Shisui awaken it during the battle 151 153 154.

Jin and Shisui’s combined attack shatters his mask and leaves him injured. Obito survives through regeneration, rejects Kakashi’s appeal, and orders Nagato to end the fight 161.

Exploiting Jin and Shisui’s Rift

After Akatsuki relocates, Obito recruits Shisui and conceals his whereabouts from Jin. He eventually reveals Shisui’s location, expecting Jin’s anger and Shisui’s guilt to produce a mutually destructive fight that Akatsuki can exploit 168 182 183 188.

The confrontation instead escalates into another battle against Akatsuki. Orochimaru brings back Madara and previous Hokage through Impure World Reincarnation, but Jin and Shisui overwhelm their strongest constructs. Obito also learns that Jin has taken the eye formerly held by Kakashi 193 197 198.

Renewed Tailed-Beast Captures

The reincarnated Madara orders Obito to accelerate the capture campaign. Paired with Orochimaru, Obito advises Akatsuki to avoid provoking Konoha and prioritize other tailed beasts 228.

His hostility toward Jin nevertheless continues: he abducts Kurenai into Kamui, while Jin later frees Yagura from his control. Obito then travels to the Land of Earth, defeats Roshi, and confines him inside Kamui. Before he and Orochimaru can depart to seek the Five-Tails’ jinchūriki, approaching footsteps interrupt them 238 239 240.
