Background / History

Childhood and Friendship with Jin

Shisui grew up influenced by his ancestor Kagami’s dedication to protecting Konoha. He believed the village was a shared home for all shinobi and rejected placing clan interests above everything else 20.

At the Ninja Academy, his exceptional talent attracted bullying. Unwilling to hurt fellow students, he endured it until Jin intervened. The two became close, practicing shuriken, skipping class to catch fish, and confronting bullies together 165 184.

Shisui entered the battlefield at eight. His self-created Phantom Body Flicker Technique earned him recognition throughout the shinobi world, while his solo missions reduced Konoha’s casualties 1.

Wartime Estrangement and Kotoamatsukami

During the Third Shinobi World War, Jin demanded that Shisui choose between the Uchiha Clan and Konoha. Shisui insisted that both mattered, frustrating Jin’s years of attempts to make him prioritize the clan. They fought, and Jin declared their friendship over 158 165.

The loss awakened Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Viewing Kotoamatsukami as a means to repair their relationship, he secretly used it on Jin that night 158 186.

Anbu Service and Clan Isolation

Shisui accepted Hiruzen Sarutobi’s invitation to join Anbu, hoping to bridge the divide between the Uchiha and village leadership. Hiruzen also refused Danzō’s demand to transfer him to Root 4 20 63.

His appointment instead damaged his standing within the clan. Clanspeople distanced themselves from him, while Jin accused him of betrayal. Shisui supplied Hiruzen with information about the clan, believing that greater understanding would demonstrate Uchiha loyalty and end the leadership’s hostility 53 61.

He continued defending Hiruzen’s decisions, including Danzō’s punishment after the attempt on Jin’s life and the investigation into anti-Uchiha rumors. Jin regarded that trust as dangerously naive 39 50 52.

Relations improved after Minato Namikaze became Fourth Hokage. Shisui celebrated the change as proof that coexistence was possible. He later concluded that the essential difference was trust: Minato trusted the Uchiha, whereas Hiruzen’s reassuring words had not translated into action 70 194.

Attempts to “Treat” Jin

Shisui became increasingly concerned that Jin’s temperament and Mangekyō Sharingan threatened his psychological well-being. He took it upon himself to provide emotional support and searched the Land of Fire for Tsunade, who refused his request to return and treat Jin 107 118.

After failing to find treatment, Shisui considered using Kotoamatsukami himself. He reserved his remaining available eye technique for that purpose rather than risk it against Obito 145 155 159.

Jin subsequently appointed him a Military Police squad leader. Shisui’s departure from Anbu and entry into the police are later confirmed 146 216.

Battle in Amegakure

Shisui accompanied Jin’s group against the Akatsuki and fought Obito. He willingly offered Jin his eyes after Obito claimed they were needed to obtain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, but Jin rejected the offer 153 157.

When Jin stabbed himself while using Izanagi, Shisui believed his friend had died. He lost control, manifested Susanoo, and attacked in revenge 157 158 159.

After Jin revived and became noticeably colder toward him, Shisui recognized that his earlier Kotoamatsukami had worn off. He used the technique on Jin again; later accounts confirm two uses on the same person 163 184 186.

Flight and Confrontation in Kirigakure

Jin eventually recognized that his will had been manipulated. Before he could confront Shisui, Obito persuaded Shisui to leave Konoha. Jin searched for him for roughly six months 165 167 168 201.

In Kirigakure, Shisui resolved to stop running and accept whatever Jin chose to do. He acknowledged the selfishness of his actions, but privately admitted that he would repeat them rather than lose his only close friend 184.

Their confrontation became a battle when Akatsuki members intervened. Although Pain identified Shisui as an Akatsuki member, Shisui urged Jin to escape and later used Perfect Susanoo to protect him 188 189 198.

Rescue, Blinding, and Return

The battle left Shisui badly wounded and nearly exhausted of chakra and ocular power. Jin caught him when he fell from his deactivated Susanoo and refused his offer to remain behind as a rear guard 199 200.

After escaping, Shisui remained unconscious for two days and developed a high fever with faint breathing. Jin sought help, and an elderly man’s treatment saved his life 201 203.

Once Shisui had recovered enough, Jin stabbed his limbs and removed both eyes as punishment for the manipulation. Shisui refused to resist, believing that enduring Jin’s anger would allow their friendship to recover 206.

Back in Konoha, Shisui relied on a cane and welcomed Jin’s visits, cooking, wound care, and shopping trips. He considered the increased attention worth the loss of his eyes 210 213 220 222.

When Jin planned another departure, Shisui asked Itachi to help him secretly follow. He feared that Jin might have found a replacement friend and privately intended to kill that person. Itachi refused the request 229.

Capture by Obito

Obito later defeated the blinded Shisui within minutes, leaving him severely injured and unconscious. He captured Kurenai as well and transported both into the Kamui Dimension, intending to force Jin to choose whom to save and then switch their locations 237.

Appearance

  • Ordinary eyes: Black pupils, changing to scarlet when the Sharingan is activated 145.
  • Mangekyō pattern: Four equal, sharply angular black blades arranged around the pupil like a rotating shuriken or pinwheel 23.
  • Anbu attire: Wears an Anbu uniform and mask during his service 39.
  • After losing his eyes: Wears bandages over both eyes and uses a cane or crutch to navigate 210 214.

Personality

Shisui initially presents as gentle, approachable, and deeply idealistic. He believes mutual understanding can reconcile the Uchiha with Konoha, and he avoids choosing between them even when Jin insists that such a choice is inevitable 24 63.

Isolation weighs heavily on him. Ostracism from the clan, distrust from the leadership, and Jin’s rejection leave him miserable enough to contemplate suicide. Although Itachi shares his ideals, Shisui ultimately regards him as a like-minded companion rather than an equally intimate friend 110 163.

His attachment to Jin becomes possessive. He uses Kotoamatsukami to prevent estrangement, interprets hostility as concealed affection, and accepts serious injuries as a means of regaining closeness. After his blinding, he also deliberately reopens wounds and becomes intensely anxious about losing Jin’s attention 46 184 206 213 215.

Shisui eventually tells Jin that neither clan nor village matters as much as he does. Jin remains skeptical of that declaration, but Shisui’s private thoughts likewise place his friend above his former ideals 163 188 217 218. His later plan to eliminate a possible replacement friend shows how far this attachment has departed from his childhood refusal to hurt comrades 184 229.

Abilities & Skills

Phantom Body Flicker Technique

Shisui’s self-created movement technique earned him the title Body Flicker Shisui 1.

  • Faster than every other ninja of his generation.
  • Supports silent surprise attacks, rescues behind enemy lines, and solo disruption of enemy supply routes.
  • Helped him rout Kirigakure’s elite forces and complete numerous high-ranked solo missions 1.
  • Does not bypass Kamui’s intangibility; his speed and sword attacks alone could not strike Obito 153 155.

Sharingan and Long-Range Genjutsu

Shisui combines Sharingan techniques with battlefield mobility and surprise attacks.

  • Defeated two of Ao’s subordinates using long-range genjutsu; Ao barely escaped with his Byakugan 1.
  • Can transition from three tomoe into his four-bladed Mangekyō pattern 145.
  • His Mangekyō had already awakened years before Obito mistakenly interpreted its appearance in Amegakure as a new awakening 154 158 168.

Kotoamatsukami

Kotoamatsukami alters a target’s thoughts directly rather than merely creating an illusory environment. Its victim can remain unaware of the manipulation, and eye contact is not required 165 167.

Eye Effect Cooldown
Right Alteration depends on the requested change and the target’s resistance. Difficult changes may take effect gradually. Generally under a month for minor changes; one to three years against strong resistance 159.
Left Forcibly changes the target’s will almost immediately. Even later discovery may feel like recognition of the target’s own choice. Described as lasting decades 159.
  • First use on Jin: The awakening flashback describes an implanted insistence that they would always be best friends. Shisui later explains that he reduced Jin’s hostility toward their clansmen, including Fugaku and Itachi 158 186.
  • Second use on Jin: Occurred after Jin’s revival and renewed hostility; Shisui later acknowledges using Kotoamatsukami twice 163 184 186.
  • Secrecy: Follows Jin’s warning not to disclose his ocular ability and refuses to explain it to Obito 24 168.
  • Loss of access: Jin removes both eyes specifically to prevent further use against him 206 217.

Susanoo

Shisui’s Susanoo manifests as an enormous emerald-green chakra warrior with armor patterned like raven feathers and red flames in its helmet’s eye sockets 159.

  • Develops from a protective rib cage into a fully armored figure 159.
  • Its Perfect form can knock down Hashirama’s Wooden Human 198.
  • Heavy chakra and ocular expenditure, compounded by injuries, causes collapse and severe deterioration of his vision 199 200.
  • After one Perfect Susanoo battle, Shisui estimates that another activation would last less than a minute 200.

Fire Release and Swordsmanship

  • Coats his short blade in flames and releases a fire shock wave with a slash 153.
  • Uses Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Claw Crimson, launching flame-wreathed kunai while advancing alongside them 154.

Fishing

  • Skilled enough to teach Jin the fundamentals through hands-on instruction, turning his repeated failures into consistent catches 50.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Short sword — Used against Obito; later taken by Jin for his Izanagi-assisted apparent suicide 153 155 157.
  • Kunai — Used with Fire Release attacks 154.
  • Anbu uniform and mask — Worn during his service under the Hokage 39.
  • Ninja tool pouch and bandages — Carries supplies to dress Jin’s wounds, though he once binds them tightly enough to cause renewed bleeding 97.
  • Cane or crutch — Used after the removal of his eyes 210 214.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Jin — Childhood best friend and the central attachment in Shisui’s life. Their ideological split triggers his Mangekyō awakening; his secret manipulation later leads to Jin’s retaliation, blinding him, and subsequent care 158 184 206 213.
  • Uchiha Itachi — A companion who initially shares his hopes for clan–village reconciliation. Itachi’s mistaken jealousy explanation reinforces Shisui’s misunderstanding of Jin; their relationship deteriorates as Shisui becomes preoccupied with Jin 45 63 163 229.
  • Kagami Uchiha — Ancestor whose village-centered outlook influences Shisui from childhood 20.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Recruits him into Anbu and initially receives his admiration and clan intelligence. Shisui later recognizes the gap between Hiruzen’s promises and his distrust of the Uchiha 20 53 194.
  • Minato Namikaze — His trust and fair treatment of the Uchiha appear to realize Shisui’s hopes for coexistence 70 194.
  • Obito Uchiha — Opponent who later persuades him to leave Konoha and exploits his falling-out with Jin. Ultimately captures him as a hostage 153 168 188 237.
  • Kurenai Yuhi — Shisui resents her closeness to Jin. Both later become hostages in Obito’s attempt to torment him 108 224 225 237.
