Background / History

Madara grew up during the Warring States Period, when the Uchiha and Senju clans fought repeatedly. Both he and Hashirama Senju lost brothers in those conflicts. Their relationship developed across years of fighting into a bond encompassing friendship, comradeship, and rivalry 531 626.

As the Uchiha Clan’s leader, Madara made major contributions to Konoha’s founding alongside Hashirama. He later defected, but his clan chose to remain in the village. His differing ideals eventually brought him into conflict with Hashirama at the Valley of the End, where he was defeated and believed killed 238 239 531.

Madara actually survived by using Izanagi to rewrite his death and leaving a Shadow Clone as his corpse. The substitute temporarily deceived Tobirama Senju. Once it disappeared, Konoha recorded Madara’s body as missing; subsequent wars and the deaths of the first two Hokage prevented the mystery from being resolved 500.

He continued arranging the Eye of the Moon Plan from the shadows, using Obito, Nagato, and Konan as pawns. However, Madara was himself being manipulated by Black Zetsu. By the war, his remains were in Kabuto’s possession, giving Kabuto leverage over Obito and Black Zetsu 135 534.

Appearance

Madara first appears physically with long black hair, a close-fitting black combat outfit, and red armor. His reanimated body bears visible facial cracks 649 656.

  • Chest marking: A face resembling Hashirama appears on his left chest; it develops Sage Mode markings when he absorbs Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra 772 774.
  • Discarded armor: Throws away his damaged armor after Minato and Jiraiya’s attacks, considering its protection negligible 772.
  • Ten-Tails form: Gains white hair, a white robe resembling the Sage of Six Paths’ attire, and nine Truth-Seeking Orbs floating behind him 779.
  • Forehead eye: Opens a Rinne Sharingan after absorbing the God Tree 790.

Personality

Madara is intensely proud, dismissive of ordinary ninja, and accustomed to treating Hashirama as his only equal. He initially regards even Naraku—the Sixth Hokage and Allied Supreme Commander—as beneath him. His belief in overwhelming others through sheer strength makes humiliation particularly intolerable: Naraku grabbing his face enrages him more than damage to his reanimated body 650 651 653 699.

His arrogance does not prevent tactical adaptation. Once Naraku demonstrates comparable power, Madara becomes wary, adopts delaying tactics, and avoids close combat after suffering soul injuries. He also allows Obito to become the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki first so that he can study the transformation and its weaknesses 655 709 748.

Madara treats allies as expendable tools. He places a curse mark near Obito’s heart to discourage betrayal and feels no concern over Obito’s death once his usefulness ends. Nevertheless, personal attachments still affect him: Sasuke’s resemblance to Izuna briefly discourages him from taking Sasuke’s eyes, although the narration makes clear that securing strength remains his priority 497 772 776.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Madara combines powerful ocular perception with highly accomplished visual genjutsu 657 705.

  • Tracks a fleeting afterimage of Naraku even at extreme speed, though he cannot consistently match Naraku’s reactions 657 709.
  • Can activate Mangekyō Sharingan genjutsu almost instantly through eye contact 705.
  • Has controlled the Nine-Tails and Karatachi Yagura; Yagura remained under genjutsu for years before being handed over to Obito 705.
  • His emergency genjutsu fails to prevent Naraku’s close-range sword strike 705 707.

Susanoo

Madara manifests Susanoo for immediate defense, large-scale attacks, and sustained battlefield control 653 657.

  • Third-stage Susanoo: A fully formed lower body and four swords support aggressive melee attacks 653.
  • Yasaka Magatama: Launches enormous tomoe projectiles as a probing attack before closing with swords 653.
  • Perfect Susanoo: A winged giant with a forehead crystal containing Madara; its sword strikes devastate the landscape 662 664.
  • Repeated manifestations: Produces numerous third-stage Susanoo to stall Naraku at an affordable chakra cost 709.
  • Limits: Naraku bisects Perfect Susanoo and repeatedly destroys the lesser manifestations. Even Susanoo’s protection cannot prevent damage from Naraku’s throws 657 702 709.

Rinnegan and Limbo: Border Jail

His Rinnegan grants repulsive force, gravitational techniques, and invisible shadows capable of independent combat 774 784 788.

  • Shinra Tensei: Creates a repulsive field described as powerful enough to repel a Tailed Beast Bomb. Naraku’s enhanced slash nevertheless cuts through it 784.
  • Limbo shadows: Ordinary people cannot see or sense them; they can attack, defend, coordinate, and exchange positions with Madara 774 782 785.
  • Four-shadow formation: Uses four shadows to encircle Naraku. After Madara becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, they possess his full strength 778 779.
  • Detection and counters: Sasuke sees them with his Rinnegan, Naruto senses them, and Naraku detects them through Observation Haki 785 788.
  • Damage resistance: The shadows resist attacks other than Six Paths Senjutsu, but Naraku’s Conqueror’s Haki coating also cuts them apart 785.
  • Return interval: The shadows must return to Madara’s body, a limitation Naraku notices during their fight 780.

Meteor Techniques

Madara uses falling celestial bodies both as direct attacks and to force enemies to protect others 657 788.

  • Tengai Shinsei: Forms seals alongside Susanoo to bring down a colossal meteor. Tsunade later reports that the battle involved two meteorites 657 693.
  • Planetary Devastation: Creates thirty-two cores and directs the resulting meteors toward the Allied Shinobi Forces, occupying Naraku, Naruto, and Sasuke while he approaches the God Tree 788.

Fire Release and Wood Release

Madara combines wide-area elemental attacks with persistent restraints 654 657.

  • Fire Release: Dust Concealment Technique: Expels a spreading cloud of scorching dust 657.
  • Wood Release: Rapidly grows a forest whose branches, trunks, and vines continuously attack and attempt to bind his target 654.
  • Limits against Naraku: Naraku escapes his fire unharmed, and Kurikara can devour his Fire Release. Madara also recognizes that individual branches cannot easily restrain Naraku 654 657 706.

Senjutsu and Chakra Absorption

Madara acquires Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra in preparation for becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki 753 774.

  • Identifies senjutsu as a threat after observing its effectiveness against Ten-Tails Obito 753.
  • Rejects Jiraiya’s and Minato’s imperfect Sage Modes as less suitable sources than Hashirama’s 774.
  • Drains the restrained Hashirama directly, but initially finds the acquired power less impressive than expected and suspects it has further potential 774 775.

Six Paths Power and Regeneration

Becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki raises Madara’s power across his abilities and gives him exceptional recovery 779 786.

  • Flight: Hovers and fights in midair 779.
  • Truth-Seeking Orbs: Gains nine orbs, including one shaped into a Casket Staff for close combat 779.
  • Sage Art: Yin Release Lightning Dispatch: Unleashes lightning while fighting Naraku, Naruto, and Sasuke 788.
  • Regeneration: Rapidly heals wounds that nearly bisect him; his recovery exceeds that of Ten-Tails Obito 783 784 786.
  • Limits: Regeneration sustains him against Naraku but does not secure victory. Naraku’s enhanced slashes breach his defenses and destroy his Limbo shadows 784 785 788.

Infinite Tsukuyomi

Madara’s ultimate objective is to impose peace through the Eye of the Moon Plan 775 790.

  • After absorbing the God Tree, reflects his forehead’s Rinne Sharingan on the moon and casts Infinite Tsukuyomi 790.
  • Sasuke shields himself, Naruto, and Naraku with Perfect Susanoo during its activation 791.
  • Naruto and Sasuke eventually release the technique, freeing the people held in its dream 838.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Red armor and black combat clothing — Worn upon his battlefield return; the armor is later discarded after sustaining damage 649 772.
  • Black rods — Disrupt chakra and restrain the Senju brothers. Madara also carries one while approaching Jiraiya to kill him 764 775.
  • Casket Staff — Formed from a Truth-Seeking Orb and used to parry Kurikara and other close-range attacks 779 788.
  • Obito’s heart curse mark — A safeguard intended to prevent betrayal; Obito removes it at the cost of a severe chest injury 497 746.
  • Sharingan experience records — His accumulated combat knowledge later reaches Sasuke, who regards it as a valuable inheritance for the Uchiha Clan 901.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Childhood companion, fellow founder, closest friend, and lifelong rival. Madara’s arrival at the Main Battlefield draws his attention to Hashirama even before the Ten-Tails 238 379 531 746.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother whose donated eyes enabled Madara’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Sasuke’s resemblance to him briefly softens Madara’s intentions toward Sasuke 776.
  • Tobirama Senju — Longstanding enemy who deeply distrusts him. Repeated battles with Tobirama give Madara experience countering the Flying Thunder God Technique 531 763.
  • Obito Uchiha — Agent, impersonator, and rival claimant to the Eye of the Moon Plan. Neither trusts the other; Madara ultimately views Obito as a tool whose actions clarified the path ahead 497 726 772.
  • Black Zetsu — Apparent subordinate who supports Madara’s resurrection and temporarily bears the pain of his soul injuries. Secretly regards him as the preferred vessel for Kaguya’s return 534 707 779.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Holds Madara’s remains as leverage and performs his battlefield reanimation. Madara recognizes Kabuto speaking through the controlled Mu 534 650.
  • Shihōin Naraku — Principal battlefield opponent. Madara progresses from dismissing him to acknowledging his strength, then questioning how Naraku can still overpower him after his Six Paths transformation 650 655 784.
  • Ōnoki — Deeply intimidated by an earlier encounter with Madara while accompanying Mu to Konoha. Madara kills him during the war 500 838.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Restoration of Konoha’s Historical Records

  • Konoha’s teaching materials initially preserve Madara chiefly as a villain while omitting his contributions to the village’s founding 238.
  • Tobirama had forbidden public discussion of Madara, but the actual removal of material occurred under Hiruzen, with Danzō’s agreement and the advisors’ tacit approval 238 239.
  • Tsunade and Naraku overcome Koharu and Homura’s opposition and secure approval to teach Madara’s merits alongside his defection and faults 239.

Identity and Resurrection Preparations

  • Naraku raises the possibility that Madara survived the Valley of the End and helped shape Obito’s actions, prompting Konoha to prepare for threats beyond Akatsuki 379 380.
  • Obito declares war using Madara’s name. After Naraku burns his apparent body, Ōnoki confirms that the exposed dead man is not Madara 505.
  • Kabuto’s possession of Madara’s remains enables his eventual reanimation, despite Obito’s reluctance to surrender control of the plan 534.

Battle with Naraku

  • Madara emerges before Mu, Gaara, and Naraku, expecting his reputation to establish his superiority 649 650.
  • Naraku overwhelms him in close combat and forces him to escalate through Wood Release, meteors, Perfect Susanoo, and the Rinnegan 651 654 657 662 702.
  • Kurikara wounds his soul badly enough to impair his fighting stance. Black Zetsu suppresses the pain, allowing him to continue a delaying action 707 709.
  • Naraku recognizes a proposed possession diversion and deliberately lets Madara leave for the Main Battlefield 742.

Main Battlefield and True Resurrection

  • Madara destroys Hashirama’s intercepting Wood Clones, then permits Obito to become the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki so he can observe the results 747 748.
  • While Naraku fights Obito, Madara defeats the Senju brothers and several leading allied combatants, establishing the conditions for his own return 762.
  • Black Zetsu controls Obito into performing Rinne Rebirth. Madara then recovers his eyes, absorbs Hashirama’s senjutsu chakra, and prepares to seize the Ten-Tails’ power 772 774 776.
  • He abandons the attempt to obtain the half of the Nine-Tails within Naruto when Naraku’s return makes further delay too dangerous 777.

Six Paths Battle and Infinite Tsukuyomi

  • Madara becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki but remains unable to overcome Naraku decisively 779 784.
  • Naruto and Sasuke join Naraku, leaving Madara facing three opponents whose combined pressure makes continued direct combat untenable 788.
  • He uses Limbo and massed meteors as distractions, absorbs the God Tree, and successfully casts Infinite Tsukuyomi 788 790.
  • His transformation advances Black Zetsu’s separate plan to resurrect Kaguya, rather than securing the outcome Madara believes he controls 788 779.
