Background / History

Origins and the Undead Orb

Hathaway was born in the Nether Sea as the Netherworld’s first life-form. Her origins granted her exceptional talent and an unusually durable divine body. Before pursuing conquest, she ruled Nether Mountain but generally avoided the Netherworld’s wars unless her faction was provoked 74 79 80.

After taking the Undead Orb, she was trapped in the Undead Realm by Hades, Lucifer, Stian, and Lilith for nearly a thousand years. Rhodes intervened and killed Hades. Hathaway then asked him to spare the remaining three so that she could take revenge herself 70 73.

She honored her promise to show Rhodes the orb, but attacked him when he announced that he would keep it for study. Unable to recover it by force, she offered to guide him and Pash through the Netherworld 73 74.

Nether Mountain and the North–South Unification War

Over twenty or thirty years of travel and sparring, Hathaway’s hostility toward Rhodes softened into friendship. She abandoned an earlier idea of using Nether Mountain’s Heaven and Earth Chains against him and instead showed the travelers the proper entrance 78.

At the summit, Inawei’s recognition of Hathaway as her master confirmed her identity to Rhodes. Hathaway then took the palace throne, openly revealing her position as Nether Mountain’s mistress 79.

Rhodes taught her about the Power of Faith in exchange for Divine Sparks and a place to cultivate. Hathaway expanded Green Leaf Castle’s territory, secured the Teleportation Array to the Undead Realm, and sent Deities into Material Planes to spread faith. Her faction became the Netherworld’s largest force within fifteen hundred years 80 83.

When the benefits of her existing faith supply weakened, Hathaway launched a wider campaign. In the decisive battle near a Teleportation Array, she killed four opposing experts while a fifth escaped. The resulting unification excluded the Undead Realm, where the Netherworld Heart’s enhancement was weaker 84 85.

Supporting Rhodes

Hathaway supplied Divine Sparks and captured enemy Deities for Rhodes’s experiments in strengthening divine bodies. Before leaving for the Infernal Realm, he left her death divine spark essence and the two remaining Overgod Mission tokens she needed: the Death Orb and Goddess Scepter 82 83 89.

She subsequently brought Green Leaf Castle’s experts to the Infernal Realm. Arriving just after Atezi struck Rhodes underground, she stopped his follow-up attack and held him in battle until Rhodes could assist the other combatants. She remained unharmed when the Four Divine Beasts ultimately killed Atezi 101 104.

After the Death Overgod appeared and provided a transforming artifact, Rhodes used its ring form to propose. Hathaway accepted and stayed in the Infernal Realm with him, maintaining contact with the Netherworld through her subordinates’ Divine Clones 107 109 110.

Rule in the Age of Sovereigns

After obtaining her Death High-level Sovereign Spark, Hathaway remained on Nether Mountain rather than immediately joining Rhodes. Two newly empowered Sovereigns challenged her rule; she killed one, seized a Fire Sovereign Spark, and severely wounded the Dark Sovereign who accompanied him 127 129.

Hathaway offered safety to the remaining Netherworld Sovereigns if they submitted and refrained from causing trouble. They accepted, restoring peace without a broader purge. She later led them to join Rhodes during the confrontation in the Celestial Realm 129 132.

Her later life included extended travels with Rhodes through the Overgod Realms and newly created Divine Planes. After more than five hundred years of pregnancy, she gave birth to their daughter, Annie 141 143 151 155.

Waiting for Rhodes’s Return

When Rhodes’s Divine Clones lost their soul auras during his attempt to create an internal world, Hathaway remained outside his Miniature Plane with Pash. She repeatedly prevented Pash from entering, insisting that they wait and trust Rhodes. During this immense period of grief, she became a Death Rule Paragon 155.

Rhodes’s returning aura finally ended the vigil. Hathaway rushed to embrace him, wept openly, and slept in his arms for thirty days. He then showed her the Small World he had created 156 157.

She later accompanied Rhodes and Annie to the Material Plane where Bebe lived and witnessed the beginnings of the eighteen-level Sovereign Cemetery. Before Rhodes’s final transcendence, she again feared a prolonged separation; this time, he returned to Heaven-Reaching Peak less than a day after leaving the universe 164 166 186 189.

Appearance

  • Hair: Blood-red 101.
  • Face and build: Delicate, youthful features contrasted with a mature figure 73 101.
  • Characteristic clothing: A purple robe embroidered with branches, vines, and silver snake-like patterns 101.
  • Bearing: Usually cold and commanding; her authority becomes increasingly imposing as her faction grows. Around Rhodes, she frequently blushes or loses her usual composure 78 81 109.

Personality

Hathaway is proud, commanding, and protective of her dignity. She becomes visibly embarrassed when Rhodes’s affection is displayed before her subordinates, but she also places value on keeping promises: despite her anger over the Undead Orb, she insists that she does not go back on her word 73 78.

She dislikes administration and initially has little interest in territorial warfare. Once expanding her influence becomes necessary for cultivation, however, she campaigns ruthlessly against resistance. Her treatment of the later Netherworld Sovereigns is more restrained: she guarantees the safety of those who submit and does not consider killing her own people acceptable 79 84 117 129.

Her affection for Rhodes often appears through actions rather than admissions. She watches over his cultivation, provides resources, and arrives with reinforcements when he is threatened. His apparent death leaves her profoundly grief-stricken, although she continues to defend the hope that he will return 83 101 155 156.

Abilities & Skills

Death Rule

  • Specializes in soul-related offense and defense 109.
  • Possesses deep comprehension even before becoming a Sovereign; Rhodes judges her understanding to exceed his own degree of Profound Mysteries fusion at that time 80.
  • Ultimately reaches Paragon perfection in the Death Rule 155.

Netherworld Heart

  • An innate spiritual treasure associated with Hathaway and her identity as the Sovereign of Death 79 83.
  • Essentially negates soul attacks within the Netherworld, allowing her to withstand attacks from multiple comparable experts while counterattacking 80 84.
  • Provides a weaker enhancement in the Undead Realm 84.
  • Is not proven capable of stopping every attack: after witnessing the Four Divine Beasts’ Fusion Innate Divine Ability, Hathaway is uncertain whether it could protect her from that strike, even in the Netherworld 104.

Divine Body and Close Combat

  • Her natural divine body reaches Highgod-artifact toughness before Rhodes introduces divine spark essence 78 85.
  • Uses both a long whip and staff-like weapons in close combat 74 84 101.
  • Possesses an innate divine ability, but its name and precise effects are not disclosed in the supplied passages 78.
  • Speed is a relative weakness: she does not pursue the wounded Dark Sovereign after he escapes into Spatial Turbulence 129.

Transforming Death Overgod Artifact

  • Changes rapidly between weapon, armor, ring, and other forms; Hathaway masters its transformations through sustained practice 109.
  • Its attack form amplifies force rather than speed, allowing sufficiently fast opponents to evade it 109.
  • Provides either material defense or soul defense at a given time, rather than both simultaneously 109.
  • As a Highgod, Hathaway can withstand ordinary material attacks from Rhodes and Krus in its armor form. This test excludes Rhodes’s Annihilation Divine Thunder and Golden Sacred Flame 109.
  • As a Sovereign, she uses its overwhelming attack power to defeat the challengers to Nether Mountain 129.

Known Limitations

  • Nether Mountain’s Heaven and Earth Chains can attack Hathaway herself; her ownership of the mountain does not grant unrestricted passage through them 78.
  • Inside Rhodes’s Small World, she cannot mobilize either her Sovereign Spark’s Willpower or her own divine power 157.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long whip — Her early weapon, used against Rhodes during their disputes and sparring sessions 74 80.
  • Wooden staff — Used during the Netherworld unification campaign to kill opposing experts 84.
  • Undead Orb / Death Orb — An Overgod Mission token that strengthens souls and shields against soul attacks, but offers no physical protection. Rhodes initially keeps it before returning it to her 74 89.
  • Goddess Scepter — Another mission token left by Rhodes. The wooden token resists Atezi’s Golden Sacred Flame; it later joins the other tokens to form the Death Scepter 89 101 107.
  • Transforming Overgod Artifact — Worn as a ring on her left ring finger when Rhodes proposes 109.
  • Fire Sovereign Spark — Taken from a defeated challenger; later refined by Pash 129 146.
  • Dark and Light Sovereign Sparks — Entrusted to her by Rhodes, who specifically warns her to safeguard the Light spark 146.

Relationships

  • Rhodes — Husband and longtime cultivation companion. Their relationship develops from rescue and conflict over the orb into friendship, mutual support, and marriage 70 74 78 105 109.
  • Annie — Daughter. Annie frequently returns to comfort Hathaway during Rhodes’s disappearance and worries about her mother’s despair 151 155.
  • Pash — Rhodes’s sworn younger brother, who treats Hathaway as his sister-in-law. He helps conquer the Netherworld for her and later shares her vigil at Heaven-Reaching Peak 84 155.
  • Ina Lisi — Trusted subordinate who calls Hathaway “Big Sister,” manages Green Leaf Castle, and assists her expansion 78 79 83.
  • Inawei — Her accompanying spirit beast, a Silver Nine-Headed Serpent. Inawei calls her “Master” and obeys her instruction to treat Rhodes and Pash as friends 79.
  • Four Divine Beasts — Rhodes’s close companions and Hathaway’s allies. She witnesses their defeat of Atezi, later supports their faction, and worries for Rhodes when he tests their combined ability 104 115 151.
  • Lucifer, Stian, and Lilith — Former captors whom she initially reserves for her own revenge rather than allowing Rhodes to kill 73.
