Background / History

Yuan Mobai originates from the Ba Shu region. In his youth, he accidentally caused a major disaster that offended a Mount Shu Sect elder and forced him to flee the region. His master accepted him, bore the resulting karmic burden, and taught him the Dao at Dragon Tiger Mountain. His old grievance with Mount Shu was later largely resolved, though periodic sparring and residual tensions remained. He warns Lei Jun that Mount Shu has its own internal disputes and entrusts him with letters for several Mount Shu elders. 126

His identity as a Mountain Pixiu spirit is known only within limited circles of Dragon Tiger Mountain and Mount Shu. Although he cultivates spiritual rather than demonic energy, disclosure of his origin is sensitive amid widespread demon-related unrest. 127

During the conflict between the Li Clan and the Other Surnames at Dragon Tiger Mountain, Yuan Mobai opposes actions he believes harm the orthodox inheritance of the Celestial Master Mansion. He explicitly rejects any ambition for the Celestial Master’s seat, later transferring control of the Myriad Laws Altar to Tang Xiaotang to demonstrate that position. 176 183

After gaining opportunities in the Southern Wilderness and Nine Li lands, Yuan Mobai enters a lengthy seclusion and advances to the Eighth Heaven Realm. His progress includes a divine ability derived from his own path rather than directly from the Celestial Master Mansion inheritance. 208 239 240

Appearance

In human form, Yuan Mobai is a youthful purple-robed Daoist with a warm smile and a temperament compared to a spring breeze. 239

  • Human form — Usually wears a purple Daoist robe and presents a refined, gentle bearing. 239 566
  • True form — A black-and-white Mountain Pixiu resembling a giant panda. 180
  • Combat manifestation — Can become mountain-sized; in this state, his physical power is overwhelming. 180
  • Immortal-era true form — Outside battle, his original form is only slightly larger than an adult human. 566

Personality

Yuan Mobai is calm, considerate, and habitually impartial, including when recounting painful internal history or discussing factions with opposing interests. 59 He emphasizes preserving the sect’s inheritance while acting according to conscience: doing one’s utmost, accepting Heaven’s will, and remaining unashamed before one’s heart. 126

He is politically cautious and strategically minded. He uses indirect information channels to protect Dragon Tiger Mountain’s neutrality, maintains a broad network of contacts, and prefers gathering intelligence as preparation rather than acting from personal resentment. 155 193

His normally gentle demeanor conceals a highly aggressive combat style once he gains the initiative. 158 He also maintains strict ritual etiquette toward the sitting Celestial Master, including when that leader is his own disciple. 367
