History
Early Authority and Root
Danzo advocates creating another “God of Shinobi” to protect Konoha, clashing with Hiruzen when the Hokage refuses to disturb the First Hokage’s rest. He already covets the abilities of Konoha’s clans, though the Hyuga’s Caged Bird Seal initially makes their members unsuitable for his purposes 12.
Root begins as a small, deeply concealed organization, weaker than the Anbu and constrained by Hiruzen’s authority. Its work includes killing fellow Konoha shinobi and conducting human experiments. Danzo repeatedly targets the Uchiha, even knowingly attributing Hyuga Akira’s undercover activities to them to justify further persecution 75 77 91.
Recruiting Hyuga Akira
Akira seeks Danzo’s protection after disabling his Caged Bird Seal. Danzo initially refuses him because a Branch Family member cannot keep Root’s secrets from the Hyuga Main Family: the Caged Bird Seal takes precedence over Root’s Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal 77.
Danzo changes his position after Akira removes a female Root member’s tongue seal. Unable to bind Akira through the same method, he nevertheless considers the ability to break seals too valuable to lose. He accepts Akira even after the boy openly admits wanting to kill him 78.
Root subsequently shields Akira from the Main Family and provides assassination assignments. Danzo personally intervenes in another clan confrontation, declaring that Akira is his subordinate and cannot be touched without his permission. He also stamps Akira’s Jonin approval in Hiruzen’s place 93 140 142.
Expanding Root
Danzo introduces Akira and Hiruko to Root’s facilities, then sends them to kill three Uchiha Jonin and frame Kirigakure. Hiruko becomes an important researcher, restrained by particularly severe seals to prevent disobedience 144.
Danzo repeatedly attempts to recruit Orochimaru, offering access to classified ninjutsu and assigning Akira to persuade him. He promises Akira partial command of Root and later places the Second Squad entirely under his authority. Akira’s reputation also helps Danzo recruit members of the Aburame and Yamanaka clans 147 157 158.
Root’s research pursues Hashirama cells and Wood Release, despite repeated failures and deaths. When Hiruko explains that Sharingan can help balance Wood Release, Danzo orders him to use additional pairs rather than abandon the project 157 178 180 221.
Plot Against Hatake Sakumo
Hatake Sakumo’s popularity makes him Danzo’s chief obstacle to becoming Hokage. Danzo wants his reputation destroyed, not his life taken, because he still values Sakumo’s military strength 192 193.
Danzo offers Akira Impure World Reincarnation in exchange for completing a trap in the Land of Wind. After Sakumo returns from the failed mission, Danzo launches a public smear campaign. A Root operative denounces Sakumo in a hospital, attacks a nurse, and kills himself before witnesses 195 198.
When Sakumo later disappears, Danzo presses for him to be declared a suspected defector. Jiraiya and Orochimaru reject the accusation, while Tsunade openly questions Danzo’s involvement in the earlier mission 207.
Losing Control of Akira
Danzo initially believes that evidence of Akira’s crimes will keep him politically dependent. He supports Akira’s aggressive campaign against Kirigakure and requests Sharingan from Uchiha battlefield casualties, but increasingly objects to his subordinate’s independence and growing ties with the Uchiha 200 203 216 219.
The balance changes when Akira demonstrates his flame power and claims he can defeat all of Konoha, including its strongest defenders. Danzo comes to believe the claim and recognizes that Akira is beyond his control. Fearing assassination and a takeover of Root, he orders his men to avoid Akira and relocates both his office and base 220 221 229.
His authority erodes further when Root personnel help Akira seal off the Hyuga compound without his knowledge. Danzo realizes that Akira’s ability to remove seals undermines his hold over the organization 244 247.
Despite privately avoiding a serious bid for Hokage, Danzo is nominated by both a Root member and Akira. He is eliminated in the Jonin vote, and Nawaki becomes the Fourth Hokage 244 250.
Dungeon Defeat and Revival
After Nawaki’s inauguration, Danzo retains Root but generally complies with the new Hokage’s orders. Nawaki nevertheless asks Akira to replace him, objecting to Root’s treatment of shinobi as tools 251 258.
Akira arranges false intelligence that draws Danzo into the Land of Rain. Seeing a chance to expand Root beyond Konoha and purge unreliable personnel, Danzo follows an apparent request for aid. Akira impersonates Hanzo and lures him into the Dungeon, where sealed space prevents his Reverse Summoning Technique from working 259 260.
Danzo fights with Wood Release, Sharingan genjutsu, Wind Release, and repeated Izanagi revivals, but cannot overcome Akira. After questioning Akira’s goals and attitude toward Konoha, he drives his hand through his own heart and activates the Reverse Four Symbols Seal. Akira dispels it with Exorcism, and Danzo dies without activating Izanagi again 261.
Akira then revives him as a Dungeon subordinate. Danzo’s attempts to leave repeatedly return him to the same room, and releasing genjutsu does not break the confinement 261.
Battle with Obito Uchiha
Inside the Dungeon, Danzo confronts Obito and probes his spatial ability through mist, wind attacks, a binding seal, and Wood Release. He identifies that Obito’s intangibility lasts beyond four minutes and forty-five seconds, but cannot turn that observation into victory 281.
Even Obito’s attempt to send him into the Kamui Dimension fails to free him from the Dungeon. Obito eventually exhausts every Sharingan on Danzo’s arm and kills him, removing the barrier to the next level 281.
Appearance
- A middle-aged man with much of his body wrapped in bandages 260 281.
- During Akira’s recruitment, one eye and an arm are bandaged. Akira detects medicinal herbs and concludes that the wrappings cover old wounds; the arm has not yet been replaced with a Wood Release arm 77.
- Later conceals an arm covered with implanted Sharingan beneath his clothing and bandages 195 261.
- Carries layers of sealing formulas on his body, revealed during his final resistance against Akira 261.
Personality
Danzo is authoritarian and intensely controlling. He believes shinobi should obey orders without emotions, presenting Root’s loss of identity and unrestricted operations as sacrifices necessary to sustain Konoha. His treatment of Hiruko demonstrates his willingness to enforce obedience through coercive seals 144 158.
His loyalty to Konoha coexists with political ambition, persecution, and human experimentation. He wants to become Hokage of a powerful village rather than ruin its fighting strength, which is why he repeatedly forbids Akira from killing Sakumo 193 195.
Although associated with radical policies, Danzo is cautious beside Akira. He rejects proposals to assassinate foreign Kage because Konoha has not recovered sufficiently from the previous war. Akira’s recklessness briefly leaves him seeing himself as the conservative party 178 180.
Danzo tolerates Akira’s insults while he remains useful, calling him a “fine blade.” Once strength replaces leverage as the basis of their relationship, that tolerance gives way to fear, avoidance, and distrust of his own personnel 180 229 259.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Danzo uses Wind Release for direct attacks, wide-angle pressure, and weapon enhancement 261 281.
- Vacuum Great Sphere: Fires a compressed, high-pressure wind projectile 261.
- Wind Dragon Technique: Exhales a dragon-shaped attack 261.
- Vacuum Wave: Produces a thin cutting stream that he sweeps across the battlefield 281.
- Surrounding wind bullets: Attacks Obito from every direction while searching for a weakness 281.
- Shuriken enhancement: Blows wind onto a shuriken before throwing it, making it spin like a much larger weapon 281.
Wood Release
His modified body permits defensive and restraining Wood Release techniques 261.
- Wood Locking Wall: Raises timber around himself as protection; Akira’s wind arrows destroy it 261.
- Violent Spear Tree: Produces rapidly growing wood to pierce or entangle an opponent 261 281.
- Chakra absorption: The branches drain chakra from the target they restrain 261.
- Limitation: Akira explicitly judges his Wood Release inferior to Madara Uchiha’s 261.
Sharingan and Izanagi
Multiple implanted Sharingan allow Danzo to survive otherwise fatal attacks by using Izanagi 261 281.
- Each demonstrated use closes one Sharingan and restores him without his previous injuries 261 281.
- Uses Demonic Illusion: Unknowing Fire to make flames appear to engulf his target 261.
- Akira’s higher-level Mangekyō Sharingan turns his genjutsu exchange against him 261.
- Once every implanted eye has closed, Danzo can no longer escape Obito’s fatal attacks through Izanagi 281.
Sealing Techniques
Danzo uses seals to protect information, restrain subordinates, and immobilize opponents.
- Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal: Root’s secrecy seal; Danzo can reapply it after Akira removes it 77 78.
- Coercive seals: Places unusually harsh layers of seals on Hiruko to maintain control 144.
- Self-Exerting Curse Binding Seal: Immobilizes Obito when he approaches from behind 281.
- Reverse Four Symbols Seal: Uses his own blood to form a contracting sealing sphere as a final attack. Akira’s Exorcism destroys it 261.
Concealment, Mobility, and Analysis
- Hidden Mist Technique: Conceals the battlefield before launching surrounding wind attacks 281.
- Reverse Summoning Technique: Attempts to escape Akira’s ambush, but the Dungeon’s sealed space blocks activation 260.
- Killing intent: Can immobilize the early-story Akira without physical contact 78.
- Combat analysis: Uses sustained attacks and timing observations to investigate Obito’s spatial ability 281.
