Background / History

Childhood Experiments

Hanzo was the only survivor among the children subjected to Shōzō’s experiments at a factory outside Amegakure. Shōzō implanted him with organs from Ibuse, giving him extraordinary strength but filling his body with poison. Hanzo consequently resented his teacher despite owing much of his power to those modifications 40 44 71.

Rivalry with Shōzō

Before becoming village leader, Hanzo established himself as Amegakure’s strongest fighter and a hero to its people. Smaller ninja villages feared him, sometimes fleeing at his appearance, although the Five Great Shinobi Villages initially paid him little attention. His supporters favored resistance to foreign incursions, opposing Shōzō’s policy of nonresistance 32 35 40.

Despite his military superiority, Hanzo could not openly kill Shōzō without jeopardizing his claim to leadership. Shōzō was both his teacher and the legitimate village leader; a death linked to Hanzo could provoke resistance or outside intervention. Hanzo therefore concealed his whereabouts while the two factions fought through their subordinates 37 40 71.

Hanzo’s faction held most of Amegakure’s strength, but Shōzō controlled its finances through the Land of Rain’s nobles. Following advice from “Muyu”—Hyuga Akira in disguise—Hanzo pressured the nobles and discovered that his own foreign campaigns had been generating annual reparations. Shōzō had diverted most of that money to the nobles, leaving Amegakure only a small share 65 67.

Seizing Amegakure

Hanzo recruited the ambitious Muyu after reading a report that exaggerated his contribution to a mission. He initially used a double to meet him, later promoted him to chūnin, and approved of his criticism that Amegakure had failed to protect the Land of Rain 40 48 61.

During a visit to Amegakure, Hanzo demanded that Shōzō relinquish leadership. Shōzō refused and sent an assassination squad after him. Hanzo defeated the squad with Akira’s assistance, deliberately leaving the bodies as a warning to his teacher 63 64 65.

As Konoha, Iwagakure, and Sunagakure forces entered the country, Hanzo accelerated his takeover. He led his faction against Shōzō’s defenders and brought Akira to the former experimental factory, where he ordered him to kill Shōzō 68 69 70 71.

Hanzo then exposed Akira as a disguised Konoha shinobi, incorrectly identifying him as an Uchiha. By assigning responsibility for Shōzō’s death to the invented “Uchiha Akira,” he secured a justification for war while distancing himself from his teacher’s killing. Akira escaped, and Shōzō’s follower Taira pursued him for revenge 71 72 75.

Second Shinobi World War

Under Hanzo, Amegakure declared war on Konoha, Iwagakure, and Sunagakure. Its forces broke through Chiyo’s defensive line, forcing the Third Kazekage to abandon his confrontation with Hatake Sakumo and return to defend Sunagakure 75 115.

The Third Kazekage subsequently drove Hanzo back to Amegakure. Hanzo renewed his offensive against Konoha, where Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade halted his advance and counterattacked 136.

Although Konoha won the battle, Hanzo personally defeated all three. He spared them and bestowed the name Konoha Sannin, requiring them to live bearing the honor he had granted as their victor 137.

Postwar Conflict and Death

After the war, foreign shinobi withdrew from the Land of Rain but continued to fear Hanzo. The country remained devastated, and Hanzo had no effective reconstruction plan. When refugees refused to return, he ordered raids beyond the borders to obtain supplies and train his troops 154 163.

Hanzo became interested in Dawn’s three young members—Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan—and ordered that they be brought to Amegakure, forcibly if necessary. Zetsu subsequently warned him that the supposed Uchiha Akira was actually Hyuga Akira, the Flame Demon, and was targeting him 164 167.

Hanzo surrounded the trio with a large Rain Ninja force and demanded Akira’s location. Akira intervened, rescued them from his scythe, and trapped Hanzo’s forces inside his Game Instance. Using Nagato’s Rinnegan and chakra, Akira summoned a meteor that killed the accompanying Rain Ninja; Hanzo and Ibuse survived 168 169.

Rather than surrender, Hanzo praised Akira’s strength and launched Poison Release: Poison Dragon Technique with Ibuse. Akira overwhelmed the attack with Shinra Tensei, killing him 169 170.

Posthumous Impersonation

Hanzo’s identity remained useful after his death. Danzō later entered the Land of Rain believing Hanzo’s presence deterred the great villages. Akira impersonated Hanzo to lure him into a sealed Dungeon, then revealed himself and blocked Danzō’s escape by Reverse Summoning 259 260.

Appearance

  • Respirator: Covers his face and obscures his expression 40 61.
  • Armor: Part of the appearance reproduced by his double during Akira’s first audience 48.
  • Chained scythe: His characteristic weapon, used in close combat and thrown attacks 64 65 71.
  • Mounted fighting position: Often stands on Ibuse’s back to confront opponents 64 137 169.

Personality

Hanzo combines a genuine desire to protect the Land of Rain with ruthless methods. He condemns Shōzō’s nonresistance as a betrayal and regards Amegakure’s purpose as defending the country. He also considers himself the village’s true justice, firmly believing that his leadership will give it a new life 40 61 63.

He is exceptionally cautious about his own survival. Hidden bases, concealed movements, doubles, and surveillance protect him from Shōzō and later from possible assassins sent by the great villages. His willingness to exploit Akira’s identity and redirect blame for Shōzō’s death also demonstrates considerable political calculation 40 48 56 60 71 167.

Hanzo nevertheless respects exceptional strength. He spares and names the defeated Sannin, and, even after Akira destroys his forces, acknowledges his opponent’s power and faces him without surrendering 137 169.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Physiology

Ibuse’s implanted organs provide Hanzo with his defining poison-based power 40 44.

  • Poison spreads across the battlefield, gradually slowing opponents and undermining their coordination 64.
  • His scythe is poisoned, allowing even a cutting wound to contaminate its target 64.
  • Shōzō’s attackers take antidote pills but continue to deteriorate during the fight 64.

Ibuse and Summoning

Hanzo summons the enormous Ibuse as a mount and combat partner 64 169.

  • Ibuse releases large clouds of poisonous mist 64.
  • Hanzo can fight from Ibuse’s back while the poison spreads around them 64.
  • Ibuse survives Akira’s meteor strike alongside Hanzo 169.
  • Neither Ibuse’s strength nor poison can break the Game Instance’s movement barrier 169.

Water Body Flicker Technique

A high-speed movement technique that leaves a puddle where Hanzo stood 64.

  • Allows rapid movement among multiple close-range opponents 64.
  • Makes him difficult to hit with coordinated Water Release attacks 64.
  • Supports repeated attacks while poisoned enemies become progressively slower 64.

Scythe Combat and Swordsmanship

Hanzo can suppress groups of skilled shinobi in close combat, although poison is his greater advantage 64.

  • Throws his scythe and retrieves it with its attached chain 65.
  • Uses the chain to restrain or pull another person 71.
  • Possesses swordsmanship experience that Akira acquires from his loot after death 170.

Poison Release: Poison Dragon Technique

Hanzo and Ibuse launch a combined attack in which Ibuse’s purple mist forms a dragon and Hanzo disappears into it 169.

  • Used as his final attack against Akira 169.
  • Cannot overcome the repulsive force of Akira’s Rinnegan-powered Shinra Tensei 170.

Combat Limitations

  • Despite his Kage-level strength, Hanzo lacks a sufficiently powerful single-target ninjutsu to destroy Akira’s Game Instance 169.
  • His personal victory over the Sannin does not prevent Konoha from winning the broader battle 137.

Relationships

  • Shōzō — Teacher, experimenter, and political rival. His legitimate authority prevented Hanzo from simply removing him by force 40 71.
  • Hyuga Akira / Muyu / “Uchiha Akira” — Infiltrator whose advice helped Hanzo secure the village’s finances. Hanzo used him to kill Shōzō and bear the blame; Akira later killed Hanzo 67 71 170.
  • Murakami Hana — Loyal jōnin subordinate who escorted recruits, served as an intermediary, and agreed to intensify surveillance of Muyu 47 48 56.
  • Kusen — Devoted supporter who regarded Hanzo as the Land of Rain’s hero and refused to accept criticism of him 35 37.
  • Ibuse — Summoned combat partner and the source of the implanted organs behind Hanzo’s enhanced body 44 64.
  • Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade — Defeated opponents whom he spared and named the Konoha Sannin 137.
  • Zetsu — Informant who corrected Hanzo’s identification of Akira and warned that he was being targeted 167.

Notable Quotes

“I haven't betrayed Amegakure. I simply disagree with the leader. I can't control what he does in secret.” 63

“From this day forward, I, Hanzo, will call you the Konoha Sannin.” 137

“If I die at the hands of a hero like you, my life will not have been in vain.” 169

Trivia

  • Hanzo of Amegakure is distinct from the bald Hanzo of the Hunter World, a Kumogakure Style jōnin. Akira takes out his frustration with the former on the latter because they share a name 52 53.
  • The apparent chūnin-level “Hanzo” encountered during Akira’s first audience is a double, not evidence that the real Hanzo has weak chakra reserves 48 61.
