Personality
Rennala is initially a steady, far-sighted leader who balances family concerns against political responsibilities. Although deeply worried when Rellana fails to return from the Church of Vows, she remains at Caria Manor to manage worsening friction with the Academy. She also recognizes Horace Loux’s usefulness without overlooking the risks posed by his growing independence 26 28 39 57.
She is perceptive about her sister’s feelings and enjoys teasing her. Her matchmaking combines genuine affection with dynastic calculation: she wants Rellana to have a dependable partner, while securing Horace’s loyalty and a stable succession for Caria. Her supposed interest in taking Horace as prince consort is a deliberate provocation, not a genuine courtship 57 67 69.
Years of government leave her increasingly resentful of royal obligations. She complains that official documents have displaced sorcery, research, romance, and hobbies, then stages her death to escape the throne. Nevertheless, her protectiveness remains intact: she explicitly threatens retaliation if Lilith harms Rellana or Caria 118 138 160.
Background / History
Leadership of Caria
As a child, Rennala watched the stars in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Troll True Magic Knights swore an oath to the young Rennala and became her allies 52.
By Horace Loux’s arrival in Liurnia, she is the Carian family’s de facto leader and is occupied with its conflict against the Academy. Having sensed an inexplicable pull herself, she advises Rellana to investigate with a contingent of Glintstone Knights. Rellana instead travels alone and returns after being defeated and injured by Horace 26 28.
Rennala welcomes Horace and considers the political value of his tribe, its Numen Witch, and his connection to the moons. She raises the possibility of recruiting him through marriage to Rellana. Later, she accepts one hundred Oath Knights sent as temporary hired assistance for a Carian operation 28 36.
Government and Reform
When Horace negotiates his position as a Carian marquis, Rennala weighs his requests for independent military command, territorial administration, lawmaking, courts, and law enforcement. His proposed autonomy presents a risk, but she recognizes the value of his governing ability 39.
After his legal code proves effective, Rennala overrides opposition and introduces a revised version throughout Caria. Horace becomes the kingdom’s highest Judicial Officer. Under her rule, relations between the Academy and royal family reach a new balance, while public safety, dispute resolution, and commerce improve 46.
She also orders a secret investigation into the persecution of Albinaurics. Acknowledging that nobles and sorcerers evade anti-slavery reforms through legal loopholes, she directs Rellana to gather evidence and use the Oath Knights to imprison those responsible 54.
Securing Horace’s Place in the Royal Family
Rennala appoints Horace chief envoy to the newly established Golden Dynasty and Rellana his deputy, privately encouraging her sister to use the journey to grow closer to him. Later, she offers Horace access to Nokstella in exchange for his continued loyalty to Caria 47 57.
Frustrated by the couple’s slow progress, she works with Miriel at the Church of Vows. Her announcement that she is considering Horace as her own prince consort forces Rellana to confront her jealousy. After Horace and Rellana become engaged, Rennala openly celebrates the success of her interference 67 68 69.
To reconcile family expectations with the danger of a large Golden Dynasty escort entering Caria, she proposes two weddings: one at the Church of Vows under Carian rites, and another in Leyndell. At the Carian ceremony, she declares Horace Duke of Caria and blesses the newlyweds 70 76.
The Moon’s Calling and Her Pregnancy
After the wedding, Rennala suffers a persistent lunar calling. She briefly wonders whether the sensation reflects attraction to Horace, then rejects that explanation: she has never felt romantic stirrings toward him or anyone else. Instead, she identifies the Moon as the source 88.
The calling develops into visions and sleeplessness. Rennala explains that, after Horace’s refusal, the Moon has selected her as its second potential spokesperson and vessel. Fearing that accepting would bind Caria to the Moon’s Law, she urges Rellana to conceive a child with Horace, believing their child could accommodate multiple Laws 113.
Lilith intervenes by assuming Rennala’s appearance and visiting her bedchamber. She forcibly implants a “seed” made from Marika’s divine blood, intending the unborn child to draw the Moon’s attention away from Rennala. Rennala struggles against her and loses consciousness from the pain 115 116.
By the pregnancy celebration, Rennala understands that Lilith has trapped her. She agrees to cooperate but tells Horace to relay a warning: she will retaliate if Lilith harms Rellana or Caria. She later learns that she is carrying triplets and chooses the names Ranni, Radahn, and Rykard 118 136.
Staged Death and Retirement
Rennala decides to make Rellana inherit the burden of government. After childbirth, Caria Manor presents a false mourning scene, with Loretta reporting that Rennala has died from complications. Rellana grieves beside the coffin while Rennala stands nearby, alive and increasingly irritated 138 159.
Rennala then insists that her announced death requires Rellana to take the throne. Horace counters with a regency: because Ranni is Rennala’s daughter and first heir, Rellana can govern only until her niece comes of age. Rellana receives a symbolic crown, and Horace receives the regency seal 160.
The succession ceremony doubles as Rennala’s funeral feast, which she openly attends. After retirement, she continues arranging her family’s future, commissioning Moonlight Greatswords for Ranni and Horace and Rellana’s future child. She also pressures Radahn to attend matchmaking dates 160 167 211.

“If” Player-Perspective Storyline
Academy Library Encounter
The player confronts Rennala in her library with Thops available as an ally. Defeating the encounter does not kill her; afterward, she speaks with the Tarnished and reviews Lusat’s letter 274.
| Phase | Attacks and mechanics | Counterplay shown |
|---|---|---|
| Summoned enemies | Transparent enemies fill the arena; floor patterns release pink gas that rapidly builds sleep 274. | Attacking larger enemies drains the shared health bar fastest. Thops’s Barrier blocks dangerous ranged attacks 274. |
| Rennala | Opens with a Full Moon, follows with sustained True Magic, and periodically releases a wide-reaching Comet Azur 274. | Thops shields the player from major spells. At close range, her AI repeatedly uses the weak “Round and Round” attack, allowing sustained melee pressure 274. |
Thops’s Classroom
Rennala initially dismisses Academy complaints by insisting that she is an already-dead former queen. After the player presents Lusat’s letter and Thops petitions her for fair treatment of the Graven Stones, she establishes Thops’s Classroom and directs him to Rellana for resources 274.
A later in-universe video analysis describes the classroom as a reform within the Academy rather than an overthrow of its system: it gives the Graven Stones a recognized place and creates a precedent for future change 292.
| Reward | Description |
|---|---|
| Rennala’s Remembrance | Can grant her power through a Finger Reader or be consumed for Runes. Its description says she abandoned rule to pursue research into “rebirth” 274. |
| Rennala’s Azure Glintstone | A moonlit, cold glintstone whose description presents an invitation to someone fated to become a lord 274. |
Ranni’s Questline
When the player obtains the Dark Moon Ring, Rennala doubts that Ranni surrendered it willingly. The player later reaches Nokstella, where Sellen claims Rennala has used them as a weapon and bears a grudge against the Eternal City 336 337.
