Background / History
Departure from Leyndell
Messmer introduces Melina to Horace in Leyndell, explaining that she dislikes speaking or looking at people. Concerned about the siblings’ future under the Golden Dynasty, Horace offers to take them to Caria. Melina cooperates when he hides her in a sack, while Messmer reluctantly disguises himself as a maid. After their escape, she reveals that Marika and Horace had arranged the departure together 51 52.
Despite knowing that their mother approved the journey, Melina later reacts with panic when Horace offers to take them back for a visit. Once he leaves, she tells Messmer that Marika does not want them to return and asks why they cannot go back to the place she considers home 88.
Life at the True Magic Academy
After witnessing the young Melina cast Minor Erdtree effortlessly, Horace sends her to the True Magic Academy for introductory education and assessment. Both Lusat and Azur praise her intelligence. Sellen becomes her senior fellow apprentice and later dresses her for her role as bridesmaid at Horace and Rellana’s wedding 55 73 74.
Sellen’s privately made Melina Dolls become popular among students, nobles, and merchants. Melina permits the use of her likeness in exchange for payment and receives a share of sales. Her earnings prove substantial enough to cover Gaius’s fine—a sum Horace considers significant even for a landed noble 81 86 103.
Sellen’s Experiments
Melina discovers nearly human-sized dolls in Sellen’s laboratory whose materials appear organic. Sellen refuses to explain their composition, and Melina subsequently becomes distracted and visits the laboratory frequently, prompting Messmer to ask Horace to investigate 101 102.
Her respect for life has already pushed Sellen away from sacrificing other sorcerers in pursuit of the primeval current. When Horace discovers that Sellen’s alternative experiments involve splitting her own soul and creating suffering consciousnesses, he invokes Melina’s likely reaction to persuade her to suspend the work. Melina later summons Horace and Messmer to Northen Manor at Sellen’s request to witness a supposed miracle 103 105 106 110.
Appearance
- At her introduction: Appears seven or eight years old, with short, somewhat dull brown hair, fair skin, delicate features, and a plain gray dress 51.
- Eyes: Her left eye is sealed beneath a purplish-black curse mark; her visible eye is described as golden 51 86.
- Academy clothing: Wears an apprentice’s robe noticeably too large for her 101.
- Wedding attire: A white bridesmaid’s dress with an enormous bow at the back of her waist. She carries an Erdtree branch sent by Marika 73 74.
- Player-perspective attire: A hood and cloak conceal much of her face when she first meets the Tarnished 181.
Personality
Melina initially appears withdrawn and nearly expressionless, earning comparisons to a wooden doll. Her reserve does not mean she is unaware of others: she recognizes Sellen’s enthusiasm for dressing her up, notices Messmer’s inability to speak on Gaius’s behalf, and deliberately appeals to Rellana’s softer side. She also teases Messmer about his maid disguise and later supplies Miquella with an outfit for his proposed portrayal of Messmer as a woman 51 52 73 86 209.
Her strongest moral commitment is respect for individual lives. She cries over injured animals, keeps promises even at a cost, and disapproves of Sellen’s specimens. Her affection is often practical: she leaves reminders to eat properly, brings Sellen warm milk during late-night work, and pays Gaius’s fine when Messmer cannot afford it 86 103 105 106.
In the player-perspective storyline, her calm exterior frequently conceals embarrassment, irritation, or mischief. The Tarnished’s behavior leaves her regretting their meeting, but she continues to guide them and worries that the Duchess may be hurt. She also enjoys provoking Rykard by offering to join his examination battle, knowing that he fears Messmer’s response if he harms her 182 205 256 262.
Abilities & Skills
Incantations and Sorcery
Melina demonstrates exceptional magical aptitude from childhood and later combines incantations with sorcery in battle 55 297.
- Minor Erdtree: Cast effortlessly while still a child; Horace later identifies her as extremely proficient with it 55 109.
- Triple Rings of Light: Used against Shabriri 297.
- Comet: Part of the sustained magical barrage that rapidly depletes Shabriri’s health 297.
- Combat effectiveness: Defeats Shabriri while the Tarnished fights as her ally, delivering the finishing blow herself 297.
Horace recalls Minor Erdtree as having a game requirement of seventy Faith, but the passage does not establish seventy as Melina’s measured attribute value 55.
Witch’s Duties
Melina offers to serve as the Tarnished’s temporary Witch after Torrent causes an accident at the Church of Elleh 181.
- Converts Runes into strength, unlocking the player’s leveling option 181.
- Gives the Tarnished the Spectral Steed Whistle and entrusts Torrent to them 181.
- Appears and disappears at Sites of Grace 181 285.
- Transports the Tarnished to Roundtable Hold after taking their hand 260.
- Initially defines her role as accompaniment to the final door, leaving the final battle to the Tarnished and their chosen consort 181.
Knowledge of Hidden Plans
Melina knows more about the journey’s organizers than she initially admits 285 316.
- Recognizes Asimi as an incomplete Mimic Tear 285.
- Suspects that the Duchess is being controlled and accidentally begins saying Hötter’s name when asked about Hecate 285.
- Interprets the repeated ritual as an attempt to summon a true lord and directs the Tarnished to the Chapel of Anticipation 316.
- Admits that she lied about the Tarnished’s Witch, while insisting that she intended no harm 316.
Kindling Maiden
Melina accepts the role foretold by the prophecy that the Kindling Maiden will offer her life for the lord. She also knows the paired-ashes prophecy and fears that it implicates both herself and Messmer 357.
- Uses a dagger forged from seven collected Glintstones to pierce her own chest and kindle a new spiritflame 366.
- Acts as part of Horace’s plan to awaken Hötter and replace the god of Ancient Death 366.
- Returns alive from the Spirit World afterward; her apparent reduction to ashes is not her permanent death 367.

- Dagger of Calling — Gives it to the Tarnished while asking them to defeat Messmer and allow her to fulfill her calling 357.

Relationships
- Marika — Mother. Approves the secret departure from Leyndell, but Melina later believes that she does not want the siblings to return home 52 88.
- Messmer — Protective elder brother and frequent target of her teasing. His determination to preserve her safety eventually conflicts with her decision to fulfill the Kindling Maiden’s prophecy 52 209 356 357.
- Horace — Uncle, guardian, and eventual collaborator. Takes her to Caria, arranges her education, and commissions her involvement in the plan to replace the Outer Gods 51 55 366.
- Rellana — Aunt. Melina successfully appeals to her compassion when seeking leniency for Gaius 86.

- The Tarnished — Temporary charge and traveling companion. She supports their growth, challenges their conduct, opposes their exposure to the Frenzied Flame, and assists their path toward lordship 181 205 297 367.
- The Duchess — Fellow Witch. Melina worries that the Tarnished may exploit her vulnerability and later warns that she appears to be controlled 205 256 285.
- Miquella — Receives Melina’s assistance with a mischievous portrayal of Messmer, but follows plans separate from hers during the player-perspective storyline 209 357.
- Trina — Keeps company with Melina in the hidden volcanic chamber, where Trina is present as a flower bud 357.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Player-Perspective Storyline: Temporary Witch
- Meeting at the Church of Elleh: Torrent knocks the Tarnished into Kalé’s goods. Melina apologizes, recognizes the traveler’s potential to become a lord, and offers her services as a Witch 181.
- Tender Paradise: Repeated Rune-farming visits leave her bewildered by the Tarnished’s killings, stolen clothes, and growing wealth. She sends a letter to the True Magic Academy through Kalé but refuses to explain the Tarnished’s behavior 182.
- The Duchess’s route: Questions whether the Tarnished can make the Duchess happy. Their shared appearances produce awkward negotiations over who should speak or perform a Witch’s duties 205 256 260.
- Shabriri’s temptation: Intervenes when Shabriri offers Chaos. The player can choose to oppose her or fight as her ally; in the documented encounter, she defeats him and begs the Tarnished to reject the Frenzied Flame 297.
- The approaching storm: Suggests that the journey may be part of a repeated king-summoning ritual. She asks the Tarnished not to pursue perfection or eternity 316.
Messmer and the Prophecies
Miquella directs the Tarnished toward the volcano, claiming that Messmer has kidnapped Melina. Sellen explains the underlying conflict: Messmer will not accept a fate requiring his sister’s sacrifice, even if Melina chooses it herself 353 356.
The Tarnished finds Melina drinking tea beside Trina’s flower bud in a comfortably furnished hidden room. She explains that she has her own intentions, gives away the Dagger of Calling, and asks the Tarnished to defeat Messmer so that she can act without forcing her brother to share her fate 357.
After his defeat, Messmer creates a road of flame to the Mountaintops of the Giants and departs to burn the Elden Ring. Melina condemns his response as madness disguised as love and tells the Tarnished that their qualifications for lordship have been met 358.
Spiritflame and Return
At the Elden Throne, Melina turns the seven collected Glintstones into a dagger and casts herself onto it. Her new spiritflame completes her part in Horace’s long-prepared plan: Hötter, also known as Hecate, awakens and replaces Ancient Death. The supposed necessity of gathering Glintstones to resurrect the dead is revealed as a pretext; resurrection ultimately depends on Hötter’s authority and choice 366.
The Tarnished subsequently mistakes Melina’s ashes for proof of her permanent death. She returns alive, fulfills her promise to bring formal clothes from the Spirit World, and leaves before the Tarnished enters the Erdtree to face Horace and Rellana 367.
Melina Dolls
Sellen’s dolls turn Melina’s likeness into a profitable Academy fashion. Melina receives licensing payments and sales royalties, including income from the “Original Travel Edition” and “Limited Edition Heretic Models” 81 86.
| Model | Recorded price | Documented properties |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 5,000 Runes 210 | Can be shown to Blaidd during the rival-club encounter 223. |
| Medium | 15,000 Runes 210 | Slightly raises Arcane; serves as a Melina Club membership pass and permits access to a secret clubhouse 210. |
| Large | 30,000 Runes 210 | Slightly raises Intelligence and raises Arcane; required for access to the clubhouse’s deeper areas 210. |
| Limited-edition, Carian-gown model | 500,000 Runes 203 | Displayed at Sellen’s traveling stall while Messmer attempts to negotiate a discount 203. |
- Messmer owns a collector’s original edition obtained through substantial expense and personal favors 81.
- The Melina Club rivals the Ranni Club. Showing Blaidd the Large Melina Doll prompts him to acknowledge the Tarnished as a worthy opponent and challenge them 223.
- Sellen hints that the dolls possess additional functions beyond those immediately apparent 356.
