Background / History

Royal and Academic Connections

Sellen belongs to the Carian Royal Family and holds a claim to its throne. The narration places her second in succession after Ranni, within Liurnia’s system of female precedence 37.

At the Academy, she studies under Azur, who considers her exceptionally gifted in True Magic. He disapproves of her apparent preoccupation with selling dolls, believing she should instead devote herself to the Primeval Current and the secrets of the stars 102.

The Melina Doll Business

Sellen originally made Melina dolls privately for amusement. After other students discovered them, demand spread through the Academy, noble collectors, and merchants from other territories. She supplied designs to the Northen Family, whose craftsmen handled production, and used the resulting income to finance research 101 103.

An audit ordered by Horace revealed approximately 23 million Runes in unpaid taxes; Sellen had paid less than thirty percent of what she owed. Horace instructed Uriel to warn her privately and require payment of the outstanding taxes and late fees. By their next documented conversation, Sellen had paid the taxes and fine but complained that she was now broke 87 101.

Replica Experiments and Daphne

Sellen sought to create a Star Seed, a step toward reaching the Primeval Current. Traditional Originist methods consumed multiple sorcerers’ lives, a price she initially considered acceptable. Her attachment to Melina—who valued every life—led her to seek an alternative that would not alienate her junior 103.

Her solution was to manufacture copies of herself. Working with the Northen Family, she combined replica bodies, fragments of her own soul, and Runes intended to stabilize consciousness and repair the original soul. She reasoned that eventually reuniting all the copies would mean no outsider had been sacrificed 103.

The seventy-eight failed experiments left behind incomplete consciousnesses. Their accumulated pain and resentment gathered in a doll, bringing Daphne to life. When Horace investigated, Daphne confronted Sellen as both her creator and the person who had discarded her constituent selves 104 105.

Sellen apologized but initially refused to abandon the research. Only Horace’s warning that Melina might fear and distance herself from her persuaded Sellen to suspend it temporarily. She then began visiting Daphne at Northen Manor every few days with gifts, gradually establishing a maternal bond 105 106.

Childcare and Travel

Daphne’s attachment became possessive when Sellen helped Horace prepare a body for Lilith. Fearing replacement by a new “little sister,” Daphne followed Sellen constantly, forcing her to reassure the doll that Lilith was not taking her mother away 112.

Sellen later exchanged childcare advice with Rennala at the succession banquet. After Ranni took Daphne away, Sellen used her newfound freedom to become a traveling merchant and sorceress; Horace subsequently found her selling dolls in Stormveil Castle 160 203.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Wears a dark blue mage’s robe reaching her ankles 111.
  • Headwear: Appears at the Church of Elleh wearing a peculiar witch’s headpiece in the If storyline 210.
  • Later presentation: Is shown barefoot beside underground magma, still wearing her ankle-length blue Academy robe 339.

Personality

Sellen is an obsessive researcher who regards understanding the Primeval Current as the meaning of her life. She is willing to risk her own soul and treats danger, dignity, and guilt as costs that can be borne for discovery. Even confronting the suffering caused by her replicas does not immediately change her intended direction; her first response is to propose safer methods and better experimental parameters 103 105.

Her attachment to Melina places a limit on that resolve. She enthusiastically dresses Melina for Horace’s wedding but becomes bored during the ceremony itself, suggesting that the dress-up process interests her more than the occasion. More consequentially, the possibility of losing Melina’s affection succeeds where moral condemnation fails 73 74 106.

As a merchant, Sellen is calculating, opportunistic, and eager to exploit a customer’s enthusiasm. She privately thinks of buyers as cash cows and teaches Daphne to fleece overly generous people. Her bargaining with Messmer nevertheless shows that she can be pushed into concessions—or frightened by the implications of her interest in his younger sister 203 210 212 302.

In the If storyline, her sharp tongue conceals genuine concern for Daphne and her apprentice. She insists that master and pupil may become enemies, yet warns the player about dangerous choices and later checks on them in Leyndell. She also explicitly rejects a transformation that would destroy the world, maintaining that even a mad researcher needs a conscience 337 340 346.

Abilities & Skills

Glintstone Sorcery and True Magic

Sellen is recognized by Azur as a gifted True Magic practitioner and teaches Glintstone Sorcery to the player 102 210.

  • Basic instruction: Sells and teaches Glintstone Pebble, Glintstone Arc, and Starlight 210.
  • Strict apprenticeship: Warns prospective pupils that studying the Primeval Current may demand everything, including their lives 210.
  • Combat support: Can be summoned alongside Millicent and Ogha for the battle against Asmodeus 308.
  • Disguise: Conceals herself as a statue at the Liurnia Divine Tower until the player strikes it 305.

Soul Splitting and Replica Research

Sellen’s experimental model divides life into body, soul, and consciousness, treating each as a separate technical problem 103.

  • Replica bodies: With the Northen Family, produces bodies matching her muscles, bones, facial details, fingerprints, and irises 103.
  • Soul cores: Attempts to create imitation Primeval Glintstones, intended to function as the replicas’ soul cores 103.
  • Rune stabilization: Uses Runes to support consciousness during soul splitting and fill damage left in the original soul 103.
  • Intended outcome: Plans to reunite the copies and their soul fragments when creating a Star Seed 103.
  • Limits: The documented seventy-eight attempts fail; their surviving consciousness fragments instead give rise to Daphne. Soul splitting also risks madness, disintegration of consciousness, or death 103 104 105.

Doll Design and Vessel Construction

Sellen combines theoretical knowledge with the Northen Family’s craftsmanship and Spirit-Calling expertise 101 103.

  • Designs commercial Melina dolls and personally crafts premium versions 103 203 210.
  • Helps Horace prepare a body for Lilith 112.
  • In the If storyline, makes the doll used in Ranni’s attempt to deceive fate and retains a backup plan that allows the player to provoke a response from the Ranni Doll 305 337.

Research into Stars and the Earth

Sellen’s ambition develops from creating Star Seeds to investigating what makes a star a living or divine being 305 307 337.

  • Draws on Ymir’s theory of common origins and her past collaboration with the Black and White King to argue that living beings possess the potential to become gods 307.
  • Proposes that the Lands Between may itself be a star, then seeks the earth’s soul and a possible connection to the Spirit World 337 340.
  • Abandons the idea of replacing Yera, both because Radahn has already pursued a comparable path and because Yera is difficult to confront 337.
  • Does not complete a documented transformation into a star; her underground investigation leaves the central question unresolved 340.
