History
Deployment to Sabaody
Sengoku dispatched Akainu and Kizaru to the Sabaody Archipelago after Ye Yang attacked and took Saint Charlos hostage. Vice Admiral Lorn’s report placed the unknown criminal at Admiral-level strength, prompting Sengoku to send both Admirals rather than risk his escape 19.
While their three warships were still approximately half an hour away, Sengoku informed Akainu that the Celestial Dragon had been killed. Following orders, Akainu sent Kizaru ahead while continuing toward Sabaody with the fleet 23.
Battle with the Dark Forbidden Legion
Akainu arrived with several hundred Marines and learned that both Ye Yang and Ulquiorra belonged to the Dark Forbidden Legion. His opening Great Eruption was intercepted by Ulquiorra’s Cero. After witnessing Cero Oscuras overwhelm Kizaru’s attack, Akainu concluded that the pair could become a major threat to the Marines 26.
The Admirals agreed that Kizaru would occupy Ulquiorra while Akainu captured Ye Yang. However, Ye Yang summoned Susanoo, withstood Canine Red Lotus, and split Akainu’s Great Eruption with a chakra blade. Recognizing Ye Yang as a Four Emperor-level opponent, Akainu considered retreating to report to headquarters. Susanoo instead repeatedly scattered his body into magma, preventing him from retaliating 27 29.
Attack on His Own Marines
When Ye Yang offered the accompanying Marines their lives in exchange for surrender, every one of them laid down their weapons. Akainu emerged from the magma and attempted to kill them, but Ye Yang blocked his attack with Susanoo. His subsequent Meteor Volcano barrage also failed when Ye Yang protected the soldiers with a Wooden Ingot Wall 30.
The survivors denounced Akainu, and several declared that they would leave the Marines. Akainu recognized that Ye Yang intended to use the incident to undermine the organization’s reputation, but could not stop the soldiers from departing aboard the three warships 30 31.
Defeat and Ransom
Akainu made a final close-range assault using Geppo, Shave, and successive magma techniques. Several minutes of bombardment produced only a slight crack in Susanoo. Ye Yang then immobilized him through an eye-related power and struck him with five Yasaka no Magatama 32.
Full-body Armament Haki narrowly kept Akainu alive, but the explosion destroyed his right arm and left him unconscious, bleeding heavily. Ye Yang spared both defeated Admirals and used Akainu’s Den Den Mushi to negotiate their ransom with Sengoku 33.
The final price for both men was six Devil Fruits and 1.5 billion Beli. After Sengoku delivered the payment, Akainu and Kizaru were returned unconscious. Vice Admirals Weasel and Yamakaji carried them to the warship for treatment 35 36.
Appearance
- Age and features: A middle-aged man with a resolute face and an extremely stern expression 19.
- Clothing: Wears red beneath a Marine justice coat 19.
- Lasting injury: His right arm is missing after Ye Yang’s Yasaka no Magatama attack 33 36.
Personality
Akainu follows Absolute Justice, treating the capture and execution of criminals as the essential purpose of his missions. He accepts methods he considers dishonorable if they serve that justice, including Kizaru’s plan to capture Ye Yang and use him to force Ulquiorra’s submission 19 26 27.
His intolerance extends to his own soldiers: he regards surrender to criminals—and even retreat—as unacceptable. His attempt to execute the surrendering Marines continues despite Ye Yang’s intervention, placing his punitive convictions above their survival 30.
Insults to the Marines and challenges to his strength provoke him readily. Kizaru explicitly criticizes his impulsiveness after the soldiers’ departure. Nevertheless, Akainu can recognize an unfavorable battle, privately deciding that retreat and a report to headquarters are necessary once he assesses Ye Yang’s strength 26 27 29 31.
Abilities & Skills
Magma-Based Logia Power
Akainu can transform his body into magma, generate intensely heated attacks, and reform after being dispersed 26 29.
- Elemental defense: Susanoo’s slashes scatter him without injury when Ye Yang does not apply Armament Haki 29.
- Fluid concealment: Remains within flowing magma rather than immediately rebuilding his body, waiting for an opening 30.
- Heat: Canine Red Lotus melts the ground where it strikes 29.
- Limitations: Ulquiorra’s Cero intercepts Great Eruption, while Susanoo and the Wooden Ingot Wall withstand his later attacks 26 29 30 32.
- Seawater weakness: Sengoku fears that Ye Yang could throw the captive Admirals into the sea, where their Devil Fruit powers would leave them weakened 34.
| Technique | Demonstrated Effect |
|---|---|
| Great Eruption | Launches a gigantic magma fist wreathed in flames 26 29. |
| Canine Red Lotus | Shapes magma into a charging dog with fangs and claws 29. |
| Meteor Volcano | Fires magma upward to fall as a widespread, sustained bombardment 30. |
| Hell Hound | A close-range magma-fist attack used against Susanoo 32. |
| Magma Finger Pistol | One of the techniques used during his final barrage against Ye Yang 32. |
Haki
Akainu demonstrates both Observation Haki and Armament Haki 30 33.
- Observation Haki: Monitors the Marines’ surrender while concealed within magma 30.
- Armament Haki: Covers his entire body at the last moment to survive Yasaka no Magatama 33.
- Defensive limit: The coating prevents immediate death but does not stop the loss of his right arm or severe blood loss 33.
High-Speed Movement
Akainu combines aerial movement and rapid acceleration to approach Ye Yang past Susanoo’s outer reach 32.
- Geppo: Steps through the air and avoids a descending Susanoo blade 32.
- Shave: Combines with Geppo to close the distance within seconds 32.
Equipment
- Miniature Den Den Mushi — Carried inside his clothing for communication with Sengoku. Ulquiorra retrieves it after his defeat, allowing Ye Yang to conduct the ransom negotiations 23 33.
Relationships
- Sengoku — Fleet Admiral and commanding officer. Orders his deployment, negotiates his release, and arranges urgent treatment after seeing his injuries 19 23 35 36.
- Kizaru / Borsalino — Fellow Admiral and mission partner. Coordinates the attempt to capture Ye Yang, but later blames Akainu’s impulsiveness for the crisis involving their own troops 27 31.
- Ye Yang — Enemy who defeats, maims, and ransoms him. Also exploits his attack on surrendering Marines to damage the organization’s reputation 30 31 33 36.
- Ulquiorra Cifer — Enemy combatant who blocks his opening attack and whose transformation Akainu mistakes for a Devil Fruit Awakening 26 27.
- The accompanying Marines — Subordinates who surrender after witnessing the Admirals’ disadvantage. His attempt to execute them turns them against him and prompts declarations of resignation 30 31.
