Background / History

Gu Zimei came from another planet. While traveling, Gu Changsheng found her sleeping aboard a spaceship in a mountain range. A recording showed her biological mother destroying a planet with an energy blast and promising to retrieve her daughter when she came of age. Gu Changsheng took the tailed infant home and raised her as his daughter 162.

Her early childhood was comfortable until Gu Changsheng disappeared when she was five. Public accounts claimed that the Great Qian Empire had executed him; the Gu Family subsequently collapsed, its surviving members died or fled, and Light City’s clans divided its businesses. Zimei never saw her father’s body and sometimes hoped he remained alive 146 156.

Light City’s governor branded her a cursed lone star, blaming her for the family’s misfortune. She lived alone from eight to twelve, enduring ostracism and bullying. At twelve, she encountered Qi Yuan’s wandering Limbo Clone on a beach. Mistaking his walk toward the sea for a suicide attempt, she tried to stop him. He offered to make her stronger in exchange for shelter in her shadow 94 134 142.

Gu Changsheng was actually being held captive. He agreed to perform the Perennial Youth Operation on the Qian Emperor in exchange for keeping Zimei alive. Consort Xu later considered that protection expendable once the operation had been completed 156 162.

Appearance

Gu Zimei grows from a scrawny child into a graceful young woman whose beauty is described as capable of toppling cities and kingdoms 94 133 134.

• Former tail: Born with a furry tail, visible in a concealed photograph taken when she was three or four. By eighteen, she no longer has it 137.

Personality

Zimei is cold and guarded toward most people, initially dividing everyone except Qi Yuan into enemies or strangers. Years of persecution make her suspicious of unsolicited kindness, and she rejects the claim that her family’s destruction was caused by her destiny 134 135.

She becomes increasingly exhilarated by combat. Her fighting style targets vulnerable areas, and she insists on finishing defeated enemies rather than allowing them another opportunity to attack. Her first killings leave her trembling, but she soon feels excitement and recognizes that dangerous battles accelerate her growth 139 140 142 143.

Around Qi Yuan, she is affectionate, vulnerable, and eager for praise. Her desire to become stronger is inseparable from her wish to spend more time with him and eventually stand beside him as an equal. Threats or insults involving him can override her judgment: she nearly opens the fatal Eighth Gate because the Qian Emperor dismisses a technique Qi Yuan taught her 135 136 142 177.

Despite her ruthlessness, she does not initially intend to kill innocent Devil Fruit users for their powers. She accepts a plan to investigate potential targets and spare good people. After becoming overwhelmingly powerful, her Saiyan ambition and domineering temperament emerge more openly 162 190.

• After further attacks, she eliminates Xiao Family pursuers. Qi Yuan reveals Du Zhen’s surveillance, and Zimei triggers a stored fire technique that kills Du Zhen and sets Sheshan ablaze 142 143.
