Chapters 1–25 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 1In Konoha, Still in Elementary School

During the Second Shinobi World War, Bieshu Feifan refused an offer to graduate early from the Ninja Academy, knowing it would send him to the battlefield. After his teacher reported his refusal to Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Hokage read Bieshu Feifan’s file and wrote a letter in response.

  • Bieshu Feifan joked with Richuan Taiban about his name until the teacher beat him into giving his real name.
  • Richuan Taiban offered Bieshu Feifan a chance to graduate early, but Bieshu Feifan refused and argued that his weak skills made him unfit for missions during the war.
  • Bieshu Feifan demonstrated the Three Basic Jutsu, producing a failed Clone Technique, failing the Transformation Technique, and managing only a poor Substitution Technique.
  • Richuan Taiban said he would report Bieshu Feifan’s situation to Hiruzen Sarutobi, then sent the Hokage a report detailing the boy’s refusal and speech.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi read the report and Bieshu Feifan’s file, then wrote a letter to Richuan Taiban.

Ch. 2The cannon fodder still wanted to run

Bieshu Feifan was forced to graduate as a genin after Hiruzen Sarutobi accepted his mocking essay about the Will of Fire. He joined a team bound for the front lines, where his new captain was Hyūga Shupi, a Hyūga Branch Family member.

  • Richuan Taiban gave Bieshu Feifan a test on the Will of Fire, and Bieshu wrote an essay filled with jokes about setting fires.

  • Bieshu Feifan received his forehead protector and learned that he and his classmates had a mission the next morning.
  • Bieshu Feifan assembled with other young genin and was assigned to Hyūga Shupi's team alongside Xiangjie Dashou and Maoxu Ang.
  • Hyūga Shupi gave each teammate a kunai, and Bieshu Feifan headed toward the front with the main force.

Ch. 3Enemy attack

Bieshu Feifan’s supply unit was ambushed by Sunagakure, and he survived the first wave by using Maoxu Ang as a human shield. As the battle continued, Hyūga Shupi crawled back badly wounded, and Bieshu Feifan eyed his Byakugan while calling for someone to save him.

  • Bieshu Feifan marched from Konoha with Hyūga Shupi, Xiangjie Dashou, and Maoxu Ang, worrying about the danger ahead and finding a position he considered safe.
  • Hyūga Shupi warned the genin to stay close, then spotted an attack and alerted the unit.

  • Bieshu Feifan threw stones and gave his rusty kunai to another genin while avoiding the fighting.
  • Hyūga Shupi crawled back covered in blood with puppet wreckage on him, and Bieshu Feifan called for help while staring at his Byakugan.

Ch. 4What a Fierce Battle

During Sunagakure’s ambush on Konoha’s transport convoy, Bieshu Feifan strangled the injured Hyūga Shupi and absorbed his Byakugan chakra. After surviving the fighting and discovering the Sand Ninja were retreating, Bieshu Feifan joined the effort to save the supplies.

  • Bieshu Feifan strangled Hyūga Shupi while pretending to comfort him, then absorbed the ocular chakra from his Byakugan.

  • Konoha ninja destroyed the remaining puppets and killed a Sunagakure Jonin, ending the encounter.

Ch. 5A makeshift camp in the pouring rain

After their supplies were burned and many young Genin died, Bieshu Feifan’s group was forced to march to the front under harsh conditions. On arrival, he was assigned to a squad led by Uchiha Kun and wondered whether absorbing the young Uchiha’s eyes would make him stronger.

  • Bieshu Feifan treated the wounded after discovering the burned supplies were combustible garbage, then learned that roughly a hundred of the contingent had died, mostly Genin.
  • Omori asked whether the Hokage had deliberately sent them to die, and Bieshu Feifan told him that the Will of Fire meant sacrificing people like them to protect useful shinobi.
  • A scar-faced Chunin took charge of Bieshu Feifan and nine other Genin and drove them toward the battlefield, where one exhausted Genin collapsed and had to be carried by his teammates.
  • The contingent reached the front in pouring rain, and the receiving Jonin split the Genin into new four-person squads.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Omori were assigned to a squad led by the young Uchiha Genin Uchiha Kun, whose eyes Bieshu Feifan eagerly studied.

Ch. 6The cannon fodder's mission began

Bieshu Feifan and his teammates clashed with Uchiha Kun over their cramped quarters and unequal supplies before preparing for their first mission. The next morning, Uchiha Kun led the squad to relieve Konoha forces, and seven-year-old Bieshu Feifan found himself on the front line with only three kunai and no armor.

  • Uchiha Kun claimed half the tent for himself and struck Omori when he protested.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio bonded over their resentment of the Uchiha, while Uchiha Kun returned with poor supplies for them and better gear for himself.
  • Uchiha Kun accused the three Genin of failing to deliver supplies, and Shimura Daio said the assignment had come from Lord Hokage.

Ch. 7A gesture of unclear meaning

Bieshu Feifan and his teammates reached a battered frontline camp in the Land of Rain and were sent straight out on patrol. When they encountered a Sunagakure squad fighting Konoha Genin, Uchiha Kun ambushed and killed the three enemy Genin, leaving Bieshu Feifan coveting his Sharingan.

  • Uchiha Kun led Bieshu Feifan, Omori, and Shimura Daio through the Land of Rain toward the front, where Shimura Daio guessed they would face Sunagakure.
  • The squad arrived at a dilapidated camp and was sent out on patrol without rest.
  • Bieshu Feifan made a spear from a branch and a kunai, then bluffed Uchiha Kun into letting him keep it by accusing him of opposing the Hokage's orders.

  • Shimura Daio and Bieshu Feifan avoided going to Uchiha Kun’s aid when they heard fighting, while Omori stayed with them.
  • Bieshu Feifan spotted many more Sand ninja approaching as Konoha ninja converged nearby, foreshadowing a major battle.

Ch. 9Rescuing Captain Kun

Bieshu Feifan fled from a Sunagakure squad and reached Uchiha Kun, only to draw more enemies to the exhausted captain. As seven Sunagakure ninja surrounded the Konoha team, Bieshu Feifan killed one with his homemade spear, and the fight continued.

  • Bieshu Feifan thrust his homemade spear through a charging Sunagakure Genin, earning Shimura Daio's praise as Uchiha Kun fought the Chunin.

Ch. 10Rescue takes the right approach

Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio used spears and kunai to defeat the Sunagakure Genin while Uchiha Kun fought a Sunagakure Chunin. After Uchiha Kun survived the battle, the squad headed back toward camp and ran into fleeing Konoha Ninja warning that the Stone Ninja had arrived.

  • Bieshu Feifan killed a Sunagakure Genin with a spear, then gave the weapon to Shimura Daio, who killed several more.

  • Omori confirmed Uchiha Kun was still alive, and the four started toward camp before encountering Konoha Ninja fleeing from the Stone Ninja.

Ch. 11Iwagakure's genius Genin

Bieshu Feifan and the other Konoha Genin fled from a pursuing force of Iwagakure ninja until Konoha reinforcements intervened. Forced to counterattack, Bieshu Feifan steered his companions toward weak opponents and tried to make their fights look difficult.

  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio ran toward the Konoha camp while Omori struggled to carry Uchiha Kun and a large force of Iwagakure ninja pursued them.

  • The Iwagakure Genin celebrated that they had fought an Uchiha to a draw and called themselves Iwagakure's genius.

Ch. 12The Considerate Uchiha Kun

Bieshu Feifan was forced toward the battlefield, where Uchiha Kun awakened his Sharingan and defeated two Iwagakure Genin before collapsing. Bieshu Feifan stole Uchiha Kun’s chakra through his eyes, causing his death, then returned toward the fighting and chose another exhausted Iwagakure Genin as his target.

  • A Konoha Chunin killed Shimura Daio’s opponent, ordered Shimura Daio into the fighting, then forced Bieshu Feifan to leave his own opponent and head for the battlefield.
  • Uchiha Kun, worn down by two Iwagakure Genin, awakened his one-tomoe Sharingan and killed them with kunai strikes before collapsing.
  • Bieshu Feifan carried the unconscious Uchiha Kun away and absorbed his special chakra through his eyes, draining the last chakra sustaining Uchiha Kun’s life.
  • Bieshu Feifan told the Konoha Chunin that Uchiha Kun was dead and left the body behind, while the Chunin avoided looking at Uchiha Kun’s eyes.
  • Bieshu Feifan used his Byakugan to survey the battlefield and charged toward an exhausted Iwagakure Genin.

Ch. 13Those who wanted to rest

After surviving the battle, Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio were repeatedly summoned to work instead of resting. While cleaning the Hyuga dead, Bieshu Feifan absorbed Byakugan chakra, but another Chunin arrived to send him and the other Genin to help at the medical tents.

  • Bieshu Feifan killed an Iwagakure Genin, collapsed from exhaustion, and was taken to the frontline camp.
  • Bieshu Feifan told Shimura Daio that he had last seen Uchiha Kun with Takaichi Wanmi, while Shimura Daio concluded Omori was probably dead.
  • A Nara Chunin ordered Bieshu Feifan and other uninjured Genin to haul bodies to the rear and bring supplies back to the front.

Ch. 15The wounded, oh, the wounded

Bieshu Feifan and his teammates escorted wounded Konoha ninja, then survived an ambush after their Chunin leader left them behind. Back at the front-line camp, a Chunin summoned the three of them before Wen Shu could report the attack to Takaichi Wanmi.

  • Bieshu Feifan checked the wounded for bloodline ninja while Shimura Daio searched them for valuables, and the group delivered the wounded safely to the rear.
  • Wen Shu questioned Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio for not joining the earlier fight, but they defended their choice by saying they had protected the wounded.
  • On the return trip, Bieshu Feifan spotted Land of Rain ninja lying in ambush, but the leading Chunin continued ahead and left the trio behind.
  • An explosive tag killed a Genin, and Bieshu Feifan led Shimura Daio and Wen Shu away from the enemy barrage while the Chunin and other Konoha ninja drew the attack.
  • Bieshu Feifan and his teammates returned safely to camp, where a Chunin called them over before Wen Shu could report the ambush to Takaichi Wanmi.

Ch. 16Hurry Over Here, All of You

Bieshu Feifan tried to escape his exhausting patrol by luring Sand Hidden shinobi into attacking Takaichi Wanmi. When Takaichi was ambushed and called for help, Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio fled, but Wenshu turned back toward the fight.

  • Bieshu Feifan left misleading traces to lure a Sand Hidden patrol toward his squad, but the first patrol recognized the obvious trap and went around.
  • Bieshu Feifan used his Byakugan to find another patrol and left a trail that led it toward Takaichi Wanmi's squad.
  • Bieshu Feifan guided Shimura Daio and Wenshu to the right, positioning Takaichi between their group and the pursuing Sand Hidden shinobi.
  • The Sand Hidden squad ambushed Takaichi with a Wind Cutter Technique and poisoned Senbon, forcing him to retreat and call for help.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio ignored Takaichi's cries and ran away, while Wenshu eventually turned back to help him.

Ch. 17They really were Konoha ninja

Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio decided to kill the wounded Takaichi Wanmi and used an Explosive Tag to bring him down. After Takaichi Wanmi died, they divided his belongings and left, with Wenshu still missing.

  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio rested after fleeing, then agreed that Takaichi Wanmi had to die when they heard him approaching.
  • Bieshu Feifan took Shimura Daio’s Explosive Tags and set a trap along Takaichi Wanmi’s escape route.
  • Wounded and poisoned, Takaichi Wanmi fled the Sand Ninja and stepped on the Explosive Tag, leaving him fatally injured.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio reached Takaichi Wanmi, took his belongings as he died, and left without searching for Wenshu.

Ch. 18The Konoha commander's leadership skills

After Takaichi Wanmi’s death, Bieshu Feifan kept himself and Shimura Daio out of trouble by pretending their captain was still on patrol and resting until a replacement arrived. Their new captain, Uchiha Ji, then ordered them to join a surprise attack on an Iwagakure supply station, leaving Bieshu Feifan wondering why Konoha’s commanders were sending Genin into danger.

  • Bieshu Feifan persuaded Shimura Daio that they should return to camp, keep quiet about Takaichi Wanmi’s death, and rest rather than draw suspicion.
  • When a Chunin came to recruit help, Bieshu Feifan claimed Takaichi Wanmi was still on patrol and challenged the Chunin’s authority, sending him away.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio spent nearly two days resting until Uchiha Ji arrived and declared himself their new captain.
  • Uchiha Ji led the pair to join a group of more than twenty people and announced that their mission was to raid an Iwagakure rear supply station.
  • A Konoha Jonin arrived, looked over the group, and ordered them to move out.

Ch. 19Impoverished bait

Bieshu Feifan struggled to keep up with his squad and was kicked by Uchiha Ji, but he and Shimura Daio transferred to another Chunin’s command. The new commander sent the four Genin to attack an Iwagakure camp as bait, and Bieshu Feifan left with explosive tags and Shimura Daio, both apparently considering their options.

  • Uchiha Ji kicked Bieshu Feifan for falling behind and accused him of avoiding the battlefield.
  • Shimura Daio defended Bieshu Feifan, who asked to transfer squads; a Chunin agreed to take him, and Shimura Daio joined them.
  • The group crossed into rocky terrain, where an Aburame Chunin scouted ahead with insects before the leaders assigned their mission.
  • The Chunin ordered Bieshu Feifan and three other Genin to attack an Iwagakure camp, making them bait for the main assault.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio pointed out they lacked supplies, so the Chunin gave each Genin two explosive tags.
  • Once out of the Chunin’s sight, Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio exchanged a glance.

Ch. 20Sharingan versus Sharingan

Bieshu Feifan devised a false betrayal story to escape a deadly diversion mission and used his Sharingan to make it withstand interrogation. The commanders continued the attack with his teammates, leaving him behind under an apparent genjutsu with Explosive Tags on his body.

  • Shimura Daio proposed desertion, while Bieshu Feifan explored throwing Explosive Tags from a safer distance.
  • Bieshu Feifan used his Byakugan to discover that Sarutobi Jiububang had fled after declaring his willingness to sacrifice himself for Konoha.
  • Bieshu Feifan devised a betrayal story and quietly hypnotized Shimura Daio and their other teammate with his Sharingan.
  • Bieshu Feifan and his teammates returned after explosions and blamed Sarutobi Jiububang, whom Chunin Koizumi identified as Koshino Naka.
  • Bieshu Feifan hypnotized himself to pass Uchiha Ji's genjutsu interrogation, and Uchiha Ji concluded that he was telling the truth.
  • The Jonin led the others into a direct attack, while Uchiha Kun placed Explosive Tags on Bieshu Feifan, who regained clarity as soon as everyone left.

Ch. 21Using Half-Finished Ninjutsu

Bieshu Feifan tried to avoid returning to the raid and was tracked down by an Aburame Chunin who accused him of desertion. After the Chunin overwhelmed him in combat, Bieshu Feifan used a disguised half-finished Clone Technique and an Explosive Tag to kill him, then collapsed from his injuries.

  • Bieshu Feifan avoided Iwagakure patrols while Shimura Daio went back to the raid team to retrieve him.
  • The Aburame Chunin sent bugs after Bieshu Feifan, then confronted him and threatened to treat his flight as desertion.
  • The Aburame Chunin defeated Bieshu Feifan in close combat, cutting his shoulder and kicking him into the ground.
  • Bieshu Feifan used a half-finished Clone Technique to disguise his real body and planted an Explosive Tag in the decoy.
  • The Aburame Chunin struck the decoy and was killed in the explosion, and Bieshu Feifan collapsed after confirming his death.

Ch. 22The Best Transfer Order

Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio survived an encounter with Iwagakure ninja and returned to Konoha’s camp, where they reported their mission to Jiraiya. Bieshu Feifan then received orders to return to Konoha to recover from his injuries.

  • Bieshu Feifan killed an Aburame Chunin, took his supplies and Explosive Tags, and spotted Shimura Daio fleeing three Iwagakure Genin.
  • Bieshu Feifan ambushed the pursuers with Explosive Tag-equipped javelins, and Shimura Daio finished off the wounded survivor.
  • Bieshu Feifan and Shimura Daio treated each other’s injuries, agreed on a cover story, and Bieshu Feifan secretly planted hypnotic suggestions in Shimura Daio.
  • The two returned to Konoha’s camp and told Jiraiya that Sarutobi Jiububang, posing as Koshino Naka, was an Iwagakure spy who had ruined the raid.
  • After the officers questioned them without learning more about the raid, Bieshu Feifan received a transfer order sending him back to Konoha to recuperate.

Ch. 23Lord Hokage Didn't Haggle

Bieshu Feifan went to the Hokage Building to collect payment for his service on the Land of Rain battlefield, then tried to trade his claimed mission merits for forbidden texts or A-rank ninjutsu. Hiruzen Sarutobi refused the exchange and paid him instead, leaving Bieshu Feifan to accept a slightly short sum and depart.

  • After recovering from his shoulder wound, Bieshu Feifan went to the mission hall to demand the payment he had not received for his battlefield missions.
  • The receptionist sent Bieshu Feifan to meet Hiruzen Sarutobi after hearing his claims about completing numerous high-rank missions.
  • Bieshu Feifan reminded Hiruzen Sarutobi that he had personally promoted him and cited his Will of Fire essay, which Hiruzen recognized.
  • Bieshu Feifan presented stamped transfer orders and offered to exchange his mission merits for twenty or thirty forbidden texts or A-rank ninjutsu.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi gave Bieshu Feifan a wad of banknotes, and Bieshu Feifan counted the money, called it slightly short, and left.

Ch. 24The reason behind the Uchiha's actions

After receiving a large payment from Hiruzen Sarutobi, Bieshu Feifan trained while expecting to return to the battlefield. Two Uchiha boys attacked him and destroyed his home, and he left the Hokage worried that the Uchiha were plotting a coup.

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi ordered an unseen follower to watch Bieshu Feifan, then returned to his paperwork.
  • Bieshu Feifan trained with his injured right arm in a sling, anticipating that Hiruzen Sarutobi would send him back to war once he healed.
  • Two Uchiha boys confronted Bieshu Feifan, and one blasted his home with a Great Fireball Technique.
  • Bieshu Feifan fought back, wounded one Uchiha boy, and held a kunai to his throat until four Anbu arrived and detained them.
  • After questioning, Bieshu Feifan learned the boys had attacked him because they heard he resisted an Uchiha Elite Chunin's genjutsu, then rushed to warn Hiruzen Sarutobi of a supposed coup.
  • Bieshu Feifan told Hiruzen Sarutobi that the Uchiha had rebelled and urged him to mobilize troops, while Hiruzen Sarutobi reconsidered his assessment of Bieshu Feifan's intelligence.

Ch. 25Don't Think Well of Bad People

After refusing to target the Uchiha, Hiruzen Sarutobi and Shimura Danzō each suspected Bieshu Feifan of having a mild intellectual disability, while Danzō recruited him to learn a ninjutsu. Bieshu Feifan returned to find his home destroyed, settled into an inn with a Fire Release scroll, and opened the door to meet Might Duy.

  • Bieshu Feifan collected more than four million ryo in compensation from the Uchiha, and Hiruzen Sarutobi refused Shimura Danzō's demand to surveil them with Root.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi crossed out the suspicion of mild intellectual disability in Bieshu Feifan's file, then added the same suspicion to Shimura Danzō's file.
  • Bieshu Feifan found his house destroyed and went looking for Might Duy, but two Root ninja brought him to Shimura Danzō instead.
  • Danzō tested Bieshu Feifan's limited Substitution Technique, gave him a scroll, and admitted that Bieshu Feifan's hostility toward the Uchiha had earned him a ninjutsu.
  • Bieshu Feifan rented an inn room and began studying the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique, then opened the door after someone pounded on it and saw a green-clad, bowl-cut figure.
