Background / History

Noble origins and adventuring

Paul was originally the heir to House Notos, one of the four powerful Greyrat houses of the Asura Kingdom. After he left the family, his younger brother, Pylemon Notos Greyrat, became its head. House Notos controlled Asura’s military 40.

Paul and Lilia trained at the same dojo. During that period, he sexually assaulted her at night before running away. He later belonged to the S-rank adventuring party Black Wolf's Fang, whose members included Zenith, Ghislaine, Geese, Elinalise, and Talhand 28 40 143 175.

Raising the twins

Paul and Zenith welcomed twin sons, naming the older child Radeus and the younger Rudeus. When the boys demonstrated intermediate magic at three years old, Paul initially insisted that at least one become a swordsman. Lilia settled the disagreement between him and Zenith by proposing magic lessons in the morning and swordsmanship in the afternoon 2 8.

Paul began their physical training with wooden swords and basic swings, spending six months on foundations before formally explaining sword ranks, the three major styles, and battle aura. Radeus then copied his Sound Sword after a single demonstration, prompting Paul to predict that his son would eventually become a God-tier swordsman 12 13 14.

At the twins’ fifth birthday, Paul gave each an iron sword. He used the gifts to teach that a man should carry a figurative sword in his heart: principles that protect what matters to him 18.

Infidelity and the growing household

While Zenith was pregnant again, Lilia revealed that she was also carrying Paul’s child. Paul admitted responsibility and apologized. Rudeus attempted to protect Lilia by falsely claiming that Paul had coerced her, but Lilia explicitly denied that account. Zenith ultimately allowed her to remain in the household 27.

Zenith gave birth to Norn, while Lilia gave birth to Aisha. Although the family stayed together, Paul’s authority at home declined sharply after the affair, becoming a recurring subject of jokes 28 31.

Sending his sons to Roa

Paul arranged for Rudeus to tutor a nine-year-old girl in Roa and for Radeus to accompany him as a bodyguard. He knocked Rudeus unconscious before Ghislaine carried both boys to her carriage, leaving Radeus initially unaware of the plan 32 33.

His accompanying letter explained that Ghislaine, a Sword King, would teach the brothers swordsmanship in exchange for magic lessons. Radeus could contact home, but Rudeus was forbidden from doing so until he turned twelve 33.

Paul later asked Radeus to return to Buena Village because monsters were becoming more numerous and aggressive. During the visit, Radeus helped him grasp the Sword of Light and accompanied him on village-defense operations 60 62 68.

The Teleportation Incident and Search Party

The Teleportation Incident separated the household, leaving only Norn with Paul. He founded the Search Party to locate his missing family and other displaced residents, establishing its base in Milishion 144 152.

Millis offered access to the Adventurers’ Guild headquarters, nearby slave-trade hubs, and support from Zenith’s influential family. Paul used that support to pressure Shirone’s royal family into releasing Lilia and Aisha, although the royals repeatedly stalled. The Search Party also recovered displaced people sold into slavery, including Somal 152 154.

Paul reunited with Radeus and Rudeus after they mistook Somal’s recovery for a kidnapping and entered the Search Party’s warehouse. He tearfully embraced them, then learned that both had become members of the Seven Great Powers 152 153.

Searching for Zenith

Paul divided the remaining search: his sons would recover Lilia and Aisha from Shirone, while he took his former companions to Labyrinth City Rapan to find Zenith. Despite knowing that his sons were stronger, he chose the more dangerous destination himself. Radeus placed at least ten thousand shikigami and a powerful miniature Mahoraga in his shadow for protection 157.

In Rapan, the party learned that Zenith might be trapped deep inside the Teleportation Labyrinth. Paul wanted to enter immediately, but his companions restrained him and insisted on preparation. The labyrinth’s shifting paths, teleportation circles, and powerful monsters forced them to seek further help 171 175.

After an unsuccessful expedition, Paul blamed his own lack of strength. On the renewed attempt, the party found Zenith sealed inside a crystal beneath a nine-headed Hydra. Paul charged ahead and severed one head, but its regeneration caught him off guard; Radeus rescued him after a counterattack sent him flying 180 186.

Radeus extracted Zenith and entrusted her to Paul while the brothers remained behind to face the monster. The family subsequently reunited, with Paul overcome by emotion at having Zenith back 187 192.

Paul then agreed to take Zenith and the others to Millis while his sons escorted Eris toward Asura. Having witnessed the deaths, enslavement, and despair caused by the Teleportation Incident, he refused to delay another person’s reunion with her family 194.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and broad, with strong hands and a firm jawline 2 3 151.
  • Hair: Slightly tousled flaxen or blond hair; later worn with a small ponytail hanging over his shoulder 2 151.
  • Face: Handsome features, emerald-green eyes, and chin stubble in his first appearance 2 151.
  • Labyrinth attire: Tightly fastened leather armor and two swords worn at his waist 182.

Personality

Paul is affectionate, boastful, and easily drawn into teasing contests with his sons. He openly celebrates their achievements, but warns them against complacency. When they explain that they fought Somal to protect a bullying victim, he listens rather than imposing the punishment he had initially considered 14 23.

His natural talent initially exceeds his discipline. Years of indulgence and early retirement leave him below the ranks he could theoretically attain. His teaching also suffers from relying on instinctive descriptions—such as the difference between a swing going “swish” and “whoosh”—rather than clear technical explanations 12 13 47.

His womanizing causes genuine harm, particularly through his assault on Lilia and later infidelity. He nevertheless remains a protective father, willing to take the more dangerous search route despite his sons’ superior strength. Separation and rescue work deepen his understanding of responsibility and the value of family 27 28 157 194.

Paul often uses comedy deliberately. During the Milishion reunion, his exaggerated behavior is partly intended to restore familiarity with sons he has not seen for a year. Even after a serious discussion about family, he quickly returns to prying into Rudeus’s romantic life 153 194.

Abilities & Skills

Three-Style Swordsmanship

  • Practices Sword God, Water God, and North God styles, eventually reaching King Rank in the first and Saint Rank in the other two 152.
  • Uses battle aura, which he explains as mana drawn inward to strengthen the body and weapons 13.
  • Defeats Rudeus in close-range sparring even when Rudeus uses swamp and wind magic to assist himself 26.
  • Fights with two swords against the Hydra, severing one head in a single attack and blocking a subsequent strike. The monster’s strength still overwhelms his guard and throws him backward 186.

Sound Sword

  • Demonstrates the Sword God Style technique by splitting a rock with a wooden training sword almost as soon as he swings 14.
  • His demonstration gives Radeus the model needed to reproduce the technique through the Six Eyes 14.

Sword of Light

  • Learns the technique through training with Radeus, gaining Sword Saint-level strength before receiving any documented formal recognition 62.
  • Distinguishes the conventional Sword God Style technique from Radeus’s blinding, light-magic variation, which he considers closer to North God Style trickery 65.

Leadership and Rescue Organization

  • Establishes and leads the Search Party after being displaced with Norn 152.
  • Coordinates guild notices, noble funding, diplomatic pressure, and searches for enslaved survivors 144 152 154.
  • Leads Buena Village’s guards against nearby monster threats 62 64.

Instruction and Practical Knowledge

  • Teaches basic sword forms, conditioning, battle aura, and the sword-ranking system 12 13.
  • Recognizes Radeus’s unusual power as a Divine Child ability and warns him that some factions abduct such children 65.
  • Helps Rudeus reconcile with Sylphiette by advising him to speak directly about being upset that she has avoided him 26.

  • Geese, Elinalise, and Talhand — Former Black Wolf's Fang companions who assist with the search for Zenith; they also curb his reckless urgency at Rapan 143 171 175.
  • Rujierd — Thanks him for escorting his sons from the Demon Continent despite his initial alarm at learning he is Superd. Paul becomes comically deferential after hearing that Rujierd has reached God Rank 152.

  • Therese and the Latreia family — Zenith’s relatives. Therese dislikes Paul but helps him and Norn; the family’s resources support his search efforts 154 156 157.
