Background / History
Kryptonian birth and life on Earth
Clark was born naturally rather than through Krypton’s genetic production system. Before the planet’s destruction, Jor-El embedded the Codex—Krypton’s genetic repository—within his cells and sent him away in an escape pod 316 351.
Jonathan and Martha Kent found his ship during a meteor shower and adopted him. Jonathan taught Clark to govern his strength through human morality, restrain his temper, and conceal his abilities until he was ready to reveal himself. Clark credited both parents with giving him his human identity and moral foundation 303.
As an adult, Clark wandered the world, taking temporary jobs while searching for answers about his origins. Despite decades of absorbing sunlight, he remained afraid to test his limits or risk hurting others 295 298 300 313.
Meeting Solomon
Martha summoned Clark home after Solomon claimed to have seen another ship resembling the one hidden in the Kent barn. Clark raced from Canada to Smallville, excited by the first substantial lead in his lifelong search 298.
Solomon ambushed him in a cornfield, exploiting his complete lack of combat experience. When physical attacks and psychic domination proved insufficient, Solomon changed tactics and claimed to be another Kryptonian survivor. Clark accepted this apparent kinship and welcomed him into the family home 300 301 302.
Solomon became his trainer, but initially intended to cultivate and copy Clark’s abilities. He eventually used kryptonite to weaken Clark enough for covert psychic suppression, obtaining his Kryptonian physiology without revealing what he had done 303 312.
Discovering his heritage
Clark helped locate the Arctic Scout Ship and used his pendant to gain access. Inside, Jor-El’s recorded consciousness identified him as Kal-El, explained Krypton’s destruction, and entrusted him with a suit and the responsibility of bringing hope to Earth 314 315 316.
Jor-El also warned that Solomon’s claimed origins did not withstand scrutiny. Clark reluctantly accepted a black suit containing a hidden restraint program to deliver to Solomon, but insisted that wearing it would remain Solomon’s choice 317 318.
Afterward, Clark agreed to join Solomon’s superhero company. Solomon offered to manage political opposition and public acceptance, allowing Clark to focus on choosing how to use his powers 322.
Appearance
- Build and eyes: Tall, broad-shouldered, and heavily built, with azure-blue eyes 301 302.
- Wandering appearance: Wears a full beard and a worn flannel shirt while working at the Canadian logging camp 298.
- Childhood photograph: Depicted as a muscular teenager wearing glasses beside his adoptive parents 297.
- Kryptonian suit: Blue and red, with a scarlet cape and a large “S” chest emblem representing hope 332.
- First champion transformation: Brilliant red armor with a yellow lightning emblem 402.
- Double-champion transformation: Black-and-crimson armor with electrical arcs flowing around its lightning emblem 421.
Personality
Clark is compassionate, sincere, and deeply attached to his family. His adoptive parents’ teachings shape his belief that personal choices matter more than birthplace. His goodwill is readily apparent to others: during the meeting with the Justice Society, his sincerity helps ease Hawkman’s hostility toward Solomon’s group 303 377.
His restraint is both a virtue and a combat liability. Fear of harming others causes him to suppress his potential, hesitate against fellow Kryptonians, and hold back against the mind-controlled Black Adam. Even after training, stronger or more experienced opponents exploit this reluctance 311 333 418.
Clark’s trust in Solomon eventually becomes a deliberate judgment rather than simple belief in their supposed shared ancestry. He deduces that Solomon is not Kryptonian but continues trusting him because of his treatment of Clark and Martha. That loyalty can turn fierce: after learning of Lex Luthor’s involvement in the subway tragedy and plot against Solomon, Clark offers to kill him 403 427.
Abilities & Skills
Kryptonian Physiology
Clark’s naturally born Kryptonian body absorbs and converts solar energy into superhuman power 313 348.
- Possesses immense strength, speed, durability, regeneration, and heightened senses; even his initial mental attribute is level 5.9 299.
- Withstands Solomon’s repeated physical attacks without lasting injury and resists his attempt at psychic control 300 301.
- Does not require oxygen, making an attempted knockout through a neck strike ineffective 300.
- Has ten times the cellular light-energy absorption efficiency, conversion efficiency, and maximum storage capacity of genetically engineered Kryptonian physiology 348.
- Continues growing through sunlight absorption; a later assessment gives approximately 41.6 days to generate one level-6 attribute 386.
Heat Vision
Clark projects destructive red beams from his eyes, fueled by stored solar energy 304.
- Cuts through a water tower and carves a molten trench through the ground during his first deliberate release 304.
- Initially becomes more unstable when he panics; Solomon must physically close his eyelids 304.
- Learns to stop the discharge by drawing its energy back into his cells and to improve precision by compressing energy before firing 305.
Flight and Super Speed
Clark can move at supersonic speeds on land and in the air 298 305.
- Before learning flight, runs from the Canadian border toward Kansas while breaking the sound barrier 298.
- Learns aerial balance, direction changes, and acceleration through control of his Biological Field 305.
- Later races around Earth beside Solomon several times within a few minutes 321.
Super Vision
Clark can penetrate solid obstructions with his sight 314.
- Scans through thick glacial ice to identify the buried Scout Ship 314.
- Conducts a systematic aerial search alongside Solomon rather than relying on ordinary surface observation 314.
Combat Training
Solomon teaches Clark striking, footwork, stable high-speed movement, and techniques for redirecting force 304.
- Initially struggles to apply these lessons against experienced Kryptonian soldiers 333.
- During the desert battle, begins evading attacks, delivering precise counters, and swinging one attacker into another 339.
- His developing technique and superior attributes eventually let him pressure three Kryptonian Warriors simultaneously 340.
- Remains vulnerable to experienced opponents when concern for their safety makes him hesitate 418.
Champion Power
Divine magic supplements Clark’s natural powers rather than replacing them 403.
- Transformation: Saying “Shazam” activates or dismisses his champion form; the magical enhancement becomes dormant when the transformation ends 403.
- Physical enhancement: Adds magical strength, defense, and speed to his Kryptonian abilities 403.
- Power sharing: Can share his first champion power with up to five other people, reducing his own enhancement for each recipient. He considers using it to protect Martha 403.
- Double inheritance: Combines Greek and Egyptian divine legacies after receiving Black Adam’s power, raising every attribute to level 7 421.
- Protection from kryptonite: Provides an alternative source of power; Solomon later states that Clark’s combined divine protection prevents kryptonite from harming him 403 430.
Weaknesses & Limitations
- Kryptonite: Before receiving divine protection, its radiation leaves him unable to stand or resist psychic intrusion. Continued exposure can kill Kryptonians 311 312.
- Psychological suppression: Years of hiding his abilities leave his attributes stalled at level 5.9 until he overcomes his internal restraint 311 313 320.
- Family hostages: Calypso forces his compliance by threatening to make the mind-controlled Martha kill herself 418.
- Rule-based attacks: Before reaching level 7, he has no rule power. Sabbac’s Hellfire burns through his Biological Field despite his physical durability 374.
- Kryptonian atmosphere: The simulated atmosphere on New Krypton makes him feel ill upon arrival 430.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Escape pod: The ship that brought him to Earth, kept hidden beneath the Kent barn 298 301.
- Black metal pendant: A keepsake worn against his skin that serves as the Scout Ship’s central command key. It allows him to deactivate its security robot and open sealed doors 314 315.
- Kryptonian battle suit: The red-and-blue suit presented through Jor-El’s recorded consciousness 316 332.
- Champion armor: Magically manifested armor that changes from red to black and crimson as his divine inheritance expands 402 421.
- Codex: Krypton’s genetic repository, originally embedded in his cells. Its extracted data activates two hundred embryo sequences in the Genesis Chamber 351.
Relationships
- Martha Kent — Adoptive mother and his foremost personal concern. He considers sharing divine power with her and later submits to Calypso to save her life 403 418.
- Jonathan Kent — Deceased adoptive father. Clark reveres his moral teachings, although the habit of concealing his abilities also contributes to his self-suppression 300 303.
- Jor-El — Biological father, encountered through a recorded consciousness. Reveals Clark’s heritage and hopes he will guide humanity, but his suspicions of Solomon create tension 315 316 317 318.
- Lylla — Biological mother. Jor-El explains that both parents remained on Krypton because their lives were bound to their homeworld 316.
- Solomon — Trainer, close friend, and chosen family. Their relationship begins with deception and exploitation but survives Solomon’s eventual confession 301 326 427.
- Diana Prince / Wonder Woman — Fellow hero and battlefield ally. Rescues him from Kryptonian attackers and later shields against Sabbac’s Hellfire 338 374.
- J’onn / Martian Manhunter — Vought teammate. Explains the Justice Society to him and delays the controlled Black Adam so Clark can reach Martha 377 418.
- General Zod and Faora — Initially enemies seeking custody of Kal-El and the Codex. After Krypton’s reconstruction begins, Zod welcomes Clark to New Krypton 332 337 430.
- Teth-Adam / Black Adam — Fellow Vought hero whose power is transferred to Clark. Clark later asks whether he can return it, arguing from the company’s public responsibilities 421 423.
- Lex Luthor — Clark develops murderous anger toward him after learning of his involvement in the Metropolis subway tragedy. Solomon later reveals that kryptonite would have enabled Luthor to cause Clark’s death in the original course of events 403 430.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Defense of Earth and Public Debut
Clark rejects Faora’s demand that he accompany her to Zod’s mothership, recognizing that removing him would leave Earth exposed. Although he initially struggles against coordinated Kryptonian soldiers, he begins applying Solomon’s training and becomes an effective combatant during the Blackstone Desert battle 332 333 339 340.
After the fighting, Solomon publicly names him Superman before the assembled media 348.
Rebuilding Krypton
Clark trusts Solomon’s request to extract the Codex from his cells, enabling the Genesis Chamber to begin developing two hundred embryos. He later visits New Krypton, where Zod welcomes him home and Solomon promises him access to the planet’s support whenever Earth faces a crisis 351 430.
Divine Inheritance and Martha’s Captivity
Solomon arranges Clark’s first Champion Power transfer to strengthen him and address his vulnerability to kryptonite. Calypso subsequently takes Martha hostage and strips that power away. After the crisis, Solomon transfers Black Adam’s divine legacy to Clark, producing his double-champion form 402 403 418 421.
Solomon’s Confession and Departure
When Solomon reveals his false Kryptonian identity, copied powers, and manipulation of earlier events, Clark admits he had already deduced the deception. He continues to trust Solomon’s affection for his family and is distressed to learn that Solomon intends to leave their world 427.
Clark spends part of Solomon’s remaining months with him and joins the farewell before Solomon disappears from Vought Tower 434.
