Background / History

Recruitment and Early Service

Dante initially joins the Prison Wardens to make a living, but eventually volunteers for the Sacrificial Ones—the organization’s highest-risk group. Unbeknownst to him, Liu Guang knows he is Dan Guofeng’s descendant and had hoped to let him live peacefully as an ordinary person. After Dante enlists, Liu Guang assigns the veteran Smoke Gun to protect and train him 396 1421.

His first mission with his instructor concerns a Ghost-Faced Moth Brood Nest near Magic City. The town’s roughly one thousand residents have been parasitized, and three Containment Facilities contribute soldiers, Sacrificial Ones, and contained anomalies to its destruction. Dante handles rear-area logistics, survives the operation, and loses his instructor 54 56 1421.

By the time he meets Lu Xiao, Dante is an experienced Sacrificial One with lung cancer and a nearly uninterrupted smoking habit. He describes his work as containing anomalous creatures hostile to humans, particularly ghosts 34.

Lu Xiao and the Japan Mission

Dante first accompanies Lu Xiao on the operation involving the Orange Taxi, drawing his pistol when its driver attacks. He later becomes the instructor of Liuguang, Slick, and Xiao Yu, passing on Smoke Gun’s bizarre cigarette-based training 36 47 48.

During the Japan operation, Doctor grants Dante the highest operational authority. Before entering J01 Containment Facility, Dante warns his trainees that the mission will cost them their Prison Warden status and leave them without death benefits if killed 68.

Dante and Driver take the Omniscient Mirror to its required position while Lu Xiao’s group infiltrates the facility. Missile explosions rupture Dante’s internal organs, but he continues the mission. When challenged over the radio, he claims to be a member of the Saints to shift responsibility away from the Prison Wardens, then tells his accusers to call him “Devil, Ding Dan” 70 71 73 74.

Surgery and Transformation

Prison Doctor saves Dante by repairing his shattered organs, removing his cancerous lungs, and implanting flesh from Lu Xiao. Dante initially mistakes his continued ability to breathe for proof that his lungs remain intact 74 75 80 83.

His skin subsequently ulcerates and sheds, exposing dark-red scales. Prison Doctor explains that his fragile human body cannot withstand its new life level and that the transformation is irreversible. Dante remains concerned about whether he still counts as human, although surviving his cancer makes the change easier to accept 82 83.

He continues traveling with Lu Xiao, Driver, Chainsaw Man, and their companions through the Dark Prison. By his meeting with Dart, he explicitly introduces himself as Ding Dan and states that he is no longer a Sacrificial One 96 106 119 127.

Recognition in Hell

While trying to save Lu Xiao and the others from hostile anomalies, Dante injects himself with P306-Cage to unleash his potential and resist contamination. The Green Mailbox then delivers a letter from Feis, who appears through a door, kneels, and recognizes him as the Great Lord 312.

Feis teaches Dante how Hell’s post office connects its inhabitants and how the Crown can suppress Hell Creatures. Dante orders him to gather potential summons there and learns that his blood can be used to bargain with powerful creatures 366.

In Morati’s settlement, Dante is identified with a supposed prophecy about a one-horned demon returning from another world to bring salvation. His appearance is misleading: he originally had three horns, but the Omniscient Mirror persuaded him to saw off two. Morati admits that Dante’s imperial lineage is false and that the “prophecy” is actually a transaction 384.

Dante establishes Morati City as a rear base linked to the Present World by a blood-maintained Teleportation Magic Circle. Morati renames it the Holy City and announces the emancipation of its slaves in Dante’s name, making Dante a celebrated savior and greatly strengthening his political position 396.

Humanity and Deification

Despite his demonic body and Hell army, Dante remains emotionally attached to humans. At Moscow District, he sees civilians, soldiers, researchers, and Prison Keeper Organization members defending the coast against mutated ocean creatures. Their willingness to inject serum into their hearts moves him to tears 447.

Liu Guang later reveals that he deliberately engineered Dante’s deification. He arranged hostile public sentiment, shot Lu Xiao nonfatally to draw Dante into public view, and used a global livestream to display Dante commanding Hell’s army to slaughter the incited crowd. The spectacle fulfills Dante’s ritual, after which he leaves in disappointment with human civilization 1421.

Beforehand, Liu Guang concealed explanatory notes in half a pack of cigarettes given to Dante. His stated aim was to redirect Dante’s hatred away from innocent people and civilization as a whole, even if Dante never forgave him personally 1421.

Rulership and the Tyrant Path

Working with Yi Hao, Dante uses promises, intimidation, and political inducements to weaken opponents’ loyalties. At the same time, he acknowledges that King’s Authority is changing how he thinks 546.

He later deliberately pursues the Tyrant path as a means of understanding the Chess Players. When Lu Xiao intervenes, Dante insists that Confusion cannot undo his choice. His northern campaign eventually reaches the Royal City, whose priest and demons kneel without resisting 680 737.

Dante also cooperates with Daimon, whom he considers both a powerful demon and the “protagonist” of the events unfolding in Hell. By his later battle with Angel, however, Dante has relinquished the Tyrant Authority, despite a statue of him still standing in the Holy City 870 1087.

Later Operations

Dante uses Correction to investigate two apparently identical Fourth Group Armies, verifying testimony rather than immediately allowing the forces to fight. He later confronts Angel over the occupation of a demon city, but neither his Correction nor her Holy Flame decisively overcomes the other 1070 1088.

Against Cthulhu, Dante and Gambler identify tampered Blood Crystals as a means of assimilating potential hosts. Dante proposes eliminating assimilated groups in the Dark Prison and isolating the remaining targets in the Present World to restrict Cthulhu’s soul transfers and Advent 1158.

During his planned advancement to an Old One, Dante secretly brings Gambler’s consciousness into his own. He confronts Correction’s original owner with the theory that Neutral Faction beings are involved in the madness and temptations accompanying advancement; Gambler then summons Niclade to help investigate 1311.

Appearance

Dante initially appears as a scruffy, muscular middle-aged man, usually with a cigarette in his mouth. His transformation replaces his human exterior with a dark-red, scaled demonic body 34 80 83.

Personality

Dante masks the danger of his work with irreverence, teasing, and theatrical bravado. He calls himself expendable cannon fodder, insists that trainees address him as “Devil,” and asks Driver whether he looked cool while bleeding from catastrophic internal injuries 34 48 73.

His flippancy does not prevent genuine courage. He finishes the Japan mission despite shattered organs and accepts condemnation as a supposed traitor rather than abandon his assignment. As an instructor, he ultimately values an unwavering heart above other qualifications 68 71 73 74.

Dante’s attachment to humanity survives his physical transformation. He questions whether he still qualifies as human and later weeps at the sight of people defending one another. This loyalty is strained by the hostility deliberately used to complete his Godhood Ritual 83 447 1421.

As a ruler, he becomes calculating and increasingly overbearing. He recognizes the psychological danger of King’s Authority but knowingly continues toward tyranny to investigate the Chess Players. His later confrontation with Angel shows the same domineering manner even after he has relinquished the Tyrant Authority 546 680 1086 1087.
