Background and History

Service under Bai Xuedong

In the old era, Chainsaw Man served as Chief Bai Xuedong’s personal bodyguard. Severe mental contamination led him to leave the frontline troops before he completely lost his mind. Liu Guang later found and brought him back, but Bai Xuedong was approaching the end of his life and ordered that Chainsaw Man be released and given his freedom 1511.

Chainsaw Man subsequently wandered the Dark Prison. Bai Suoyi recognized him when they later met but initially concealed their connection out of respect for Bai Xuedong’s order 1511.

Lu Xiao’s First Friend

Chainsaw Man was the first creature Lu Xiao met in the Dark Prison. Their friendship began when he reattached Lu Xiao’s broken leg. Although Lu Xiao initially considered eating him, Chainsaw Man did not attack and occasionally caught food for him 108 258.

They spent at least two and a half of Lu Xiao’s three years in the Dark Prison together. His protection helped Lu Xiao survive his weakest period, a debt Lu Xiao later rediscovered through his sealed containment records 108 1511.

During a later reunion, Chainsaw Man found Lu Xiao by scent. Lu Xiao gave him a handmade name badge reading “Chainsaw Uncle” and declared that they were now comrades 48 49.

Protecting Dart

After Lu Xiao left Dart in the Dark Prison, Chainsaw Man repeatedly hunted high-level anomalous life to feed him. At one point, he announced Dart’s thirty-ninth meal of the day; Dart’s head tentacles had grown dramatically during this feeding period 62.

Their encounter with R019—Source of Pollution exposed a major weakness: Chainsaw Man could not resist its black liquid. When Dart asked him to kill him rather than allow the entity to prevail, Chainsaw Man was already covered and unable to act 62.

He later left Dart to reunite with Lu Xiao. Dart allowed him to go despite the objection that his departure would slow Dart’s evolution. Chainsaw Man reported that Dart had become too powerful for him to defeat 81.

Containment and the Creator Operation

Lu Xiao brought Chainsaw Man into the Present World, where Doctor registered him as Serial Number 305. Lu Xiao’s assurances secured a provisional S classification rather than the Class D designation Doctor had initially considered 82.

Chainsaw Man soon began assisting Prison Doctor. He cut through Dante’s scales when Prison Doctor’s Surgical Knife could not, then precisely opened Dante’s chest 83.

The pair later entered the Corrupted Creator’s containment room under an agreement with Doctor. During the fight, Prison Doctor used sedatives, pain-blocking drugs, and modified blood from Lu Xiao to keep Chainsaw Man fighting. They escaped with one of the Creator’s severed legs, but Chainsaw Man’s original bandage-like skin had burned away 86 87.

Prison Doctor grafted the Creator’s skin onto him. The graft finished taking during a shared meal in the Dark Prison, when Chainsaw Man’s replacement bandages split apart and revealed his new appearance 89 108.

Lu Xiao’s Deterioration

Chainsaw Man helped the group investigate Dart’s transformation, identifying his discarded flesh by scent and helping track his route into the Dark Prison’s depths 101 102.

When Lu Xiao later awoke without his memories and became violent, Chainsaw Man notified Shuns but could not subdue him. Lu Xiao repeatedly attacked from the darkness, leaving him wounded and forcing him to seek protection behind Shadow 248 249.

He remained involved in the effort to help Lu Xiao. When he proposed cutting away the rotting flesh with his chainsaw, Prison Doctor warned that suppressing regrowth would not remove the curse and might make it manifest somewhere worse. Chainsaw Man immediately withdrew the weapon 256.

After Lu Xiao again broke a leg, Chainsaw Man repaired it, recreating the circumstances of their original friendship. He celebrated Lu Xiao’s response as the return of his friend, while Shadow and Bai Suoyi recognized that the encounter matched the prepared script 258.

During the subsequent journey, Chainsaw Man attacked Zhang Chu. His blade failed to penetrate Zhang Chu’s neck, and a blood-red lightning strike destroyed his right shoulder. Lu Xiao retrieved the severed arm, and Bai Suoyi offered to bandage him 265.

Later Hunger Episode

In a later encounter, Chainsaw Man was again wrapped in bandages and demanded food. Lu Xiao’s reminder that friends could not be eaten briefly stopped him, but he became increasingly agitated and hostile. Dan Guofeng restrained him with barbed fleshy sprouts, and Lu Xiao intervened before they drained him dry 565.

Lu Xiao and Dan Guofeng then transported him toward Doctor Li. He refused protein bars, and Lu Xiao would not capture humans to feed him 572.

Butcher of the Arena

Under the name Butcher, Chainsaw Man became known as Bai Suoyi’s strongest battle pet after cutting a deity into thumb-sized pieces in the Roman arena. His reputation was enough to intimidate a godlike bidder during the auction of War Elephant 1005.

He later severed that bidder’s arm after the bidder threatened Bai Suoyi. The wound was especially serious because the chainsaw’s trait suppressed regrowth 1007.

At the Beast Arena, he defeated a two-headed, five-armed deity by holding his chainsaw against its neck and waiting for its master to surrender. Although Lucilla was nominally his master, their actual arrangement was cooperative; she assured him that he only needed to appear in the arena occasionally 1154.

Wisdom and Bai Suoyi’s Household

Chainsaw Man declined to accompany Lu Xiao into the stars because he considered himself too weak and unintelligent to help. He instead became Niu Bo’s Chosen One and placed his faith in “Wisdom,” hoping to improve his intelligence. He agreed to meet Lu Xiao on Mother Goddess Star once he became smarter 1223.

He later abandoned that travel plan and remained on Earth. After Bai Suoyi returned, Chainsaw Man stayed beside him in a butler-like role and watched all four of his older children grow up. He also declined to enter the Species Ranking Tournament because Bai Jingzhu had been born and he wanted to watch over her until adulthood 1510.

Appearance

• Original form: A humanoid completely wrapped in bandages, carrying an enormous chainsaw and giving off a strong smell of decay. The original bandages were actually his protective skin 2 89.
• After losing his skin: Exposed, mangled flesh with visible pulsing blood vessels; replacement bandages covered the graft while it healed 87 89.
• After the graft: A refined-featured, sickly-looking middle-aged man with exceptionally pale skin and no visible bodily mutations. His expression was initially stiff as he adjusted to the change 108.
• Height: Described as three meters tall during Lu Xiao’s berserk episode 249.
• Voice: Usually deep and muffled; his later speech sometimes consists of short, halting phrases 48 1005 1154.

Personality

Chainsaw Man is affectionate and protective toward those he recognizes as friends, but friendship does not automatically erase his predatory appetite. Lu Xiao repeatedly teaches him that friends cannot be eaten, and he generally accepts these corrections. His later hunger episode shows that this restraint can fail 48 49 50 565.

He often expresses care through practical help: hunting food, repairing injuries, and guarding companions. His excessive feeding of Dart comes from concern that Dart might grow thin and Lu Xiao might blame him. He also volunteers to provide all of Lu Qian’s snacks 62 85 258.

His courage has limits. He readily charges anomalous creatures, but admits when Dart and Lu Xiao exceed his strength. After Zhang Chu maims him, he emphatically agrees not to provoke him again 81 96 249 265.

He recognizes his own intellectual limitations and seeks to improve them rather than burden Lu Xiao’s expedition. His later decision to remain with Bai Suoyi’s children reflects a preference for long-term companionship over tournament participation 1223 1510.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Chainsaw

His chainsaw inflicts a curse that prevents or suppresses regrowth in whatever it cuts 123 256.

• Lasting removal: Dante’s two severed horns do not regrow because of the weapon’s trait 384.
• Threat against deities: The prospect of a cursed neck wound forces his Beast Arena opponent’s master to surrender 1154.
• Not absolutely irreversible: A sufficiently capable backer may pay a price to erase the trait; the arena account also indicates that advancing one’s life level can overcome its effects 1007 1154.
• Not a cure for every curse: Removing Lu Xiao’s rotting flesh would not have eliminated the underlying curse 256.

Physical Combat

• Speed: His early appearance shows him crossing dozens of meters in a stride. Modified blood later boosts his movement enough to leave afterimages 2 87.
• Hunting strength: He kills high-level anomalous life and brings back an enormous supernatural wild boar, though the latter leaves him visibly battered 62 96 97.
