Chapters 326–350 Vol. 4 Read

Ch. 326Escape from Oldtown (Part One)

Laleisa helped Samwell escape the Citadel through a secret warehouse passage and led him across Oldtown to a carriage. At the city gate, an Ironborn guard stopped the carriage to search for missing apprentices, but Laleisa claimed House Martell’s protection.

  • Maester Paul led Laleisa and Samwell through a hidden passage out of the Citadel, then discovered Laleisa had lied about his mother being imprisoned.
  • Samwell and Laleisa emerged inside the Ironborn harbor camp and slipped out through the streets.
  • Laleisa took a carriage waiting nearby and told Samwell to hide while they waited for the city gates to open.
  • As they approached the gate at dawn, an Ironborn guard stopped the carriage to inspect it for missing Citadel apprentices.
  • Laleisa invoked the carriage’s Martell sigil, and the guard recognized the Spear Piercing the Sun.

Ch. 327Escape from Oldtown (Part two)

Sarella Sand helped Samwell escape Oldtown with the stolen Cannon Forging Guide, while Gary received an Iron Bank envoy and discussed the delivery of gold and Valyrian steel swords. Davos learned that his family had fled their lost castle and reunited with Marya and their sons outside King's Landing.

  • Sarella Sand revealed her identity to Samwell and warned him that stealing the Cannon Forging Guide could bring a bounty on him and endanger his family.
  • Tysha began converting the Alchemists' Guild basement into a forge and laboratories, and summoned trusted followers from Pentos to help obtain materials.
  • Gary received Naho Dimittis, who delivered five million gold dragons and agreed to return in three months to inspect the promised Valyrian steel swords.
  • Davos hurried to the slums after hearing that a woman claiming to be his wife had arrived, then recognized Marya and embraced her and their two sons.
  • Marya told Davos that their castle was gone and they had fled, while the Gold Cloaks sought his favor after he confirmed her identity.

Ch. 328The strongest cavalry

Davos reported that Dothraki horsemen had captured his castle, prompting Tyrion to investigate how Aegon VI had recruited them. At Highgarden, Willas and his siblings planned to evacuate with supplies and a dragon, but a sudden cannon attack from the west interrupted them.

  • Davos told Tyrion that Dothraki horsemen had taken his castle, and Tyrion asked Bran to investigate their numbers.
  • Bran said his Little Wolf Pups would report on the Dothraki, while Jaqen suspected Aegon VI had offered them something more valuable than gold.
  • Mace argued with Willas against abandoning Highgarden, and the father and son parted on bad terms.
  • Willas, Loras, and Margaery discussed evacuating supplies and troops, and Margaery questioned why the Ironborn had not attacked.
  • Cannon fire sounded west of Highgarden, and Willas recognized it as Euron's attack.

Ch. 329The White Dragon and the Squid (Part Two)

Highgarden came under a fierce Ironborn assault while Bingling fought their sea monster, and Willas deduced that a traitor had opened the eastern gates. As Euron Greyjoy’s force attacked the storehouse, Teresa prepared to defend the camp after sensing the approaching enemies.

  • Margaery brought Bingling to the outer walls, where the dragon pinned down the Ironborn sea monster after its ink extinguished her dragonfire.
  • Willas realized the Ironborn were attacking the storehouse through an eastern breach and sent Loras to warn Margaery about evacuating.
  • Willas tried to lead troops back to defend the storehouse, but Lord Mace ordered the soldiers to remain at the last wall, so Willas rode away alone.
  • Euron Greyjoy led roughly a thousand Ironborn through the eastern gates and ordered a surprise attack on the storehouse despite hearing that Margaery might be there.
  • Teresa summoned water from buckets into three enormous drops and warned the cavalry that enemies were approaching.

Ch. 330The wealth of Highgarden (Part one)

Willas evacuated Highgarden’s grain and Gold Dragons while searching for Teresa, who had driven off the Ironborn. Margaery rescued Lord Mace from the failing city and carried him north on Bingling toward the Roseroad.

  • Willas learned that Teresa had routed the Ironborn with Water Magic, then sent cavalry to search for her when he heard she had pursued the survivors alone.
  • Willas waited for Loras, then led three thousand wagons of supplies through Highgarden’s gates and joined the cavalry returning from its search for Teresa.
  • The searching cavalry reported that the Ironborn had fled by boat along the Mander River and that Teresa was missing, but Willas decided to continue north.
  • Lord Mace returned to the castle, found its servants gone with Willas, and lost his steward when a cannonball struck the building.
  • Margaery arrived on Bingling and urged Lord Mace to flee, then Bingling carried him north despite his protests.

Ch. 331Highgarden's wealth (part two)

Willas led House Tyrell’s convoy toward King’s Landing while Teresa returned injured from a confrontation with Euron Greyjoy and warned that he could enslave gods. Near the Crownlands, Loras encountered Daenerys Targaryen and her Dragon Cavalry, who rode south to meet Margaery and the convoy.

  • Lord Mace berated Willas for abandoning House Tyrell’s legacy, then rode with the convoy as it continued toward King’s Landing.
  • Teresa appeared injured and urged Bingling to take her back to King’s Landing, but Bingling refused to leave the money and grain; Teresa fell into a deep sleep and asked Luke to save her.
  • Two months later, Willas sent Loras and two hundred cavalrymen ahead to scout for an ambush near the Crownlands.
  • Loras found more than two thousand acid-corroded corpses and met Daenerys Targaryen with three dragons and thirty-seven Dragon Cavalry riders.
  • Daenerys learned that Margaery and the convoy were three leagues behind, then led her riders south along the Roseroad toward them.

Ch. 332The thawing of Horn Hill (Part one)

Samwell and Sarella entered besieged Horn Hill through an old secret passage so he could rescue his family. The chapter ended with Samwell warning that Euron’s cannons could destroy the castle, while Sarella questioned whether Highgarden had already fallen.

  • Samwell and Sarella reached Horn Hill and identified its besiegers as Reach lords allied with Euron Greyjoy.
  • Samwell led Sarella through a concealed passage from the forest into Horn Hill and explained that he meant to take his mother, sisters, wife, and son away.
  • Samwell reunited with his mother, Countess Melissa Florent, who offered to guide them through a newer passage when they left.
  • Dickon Tarly arrived with soldiers and opposed Samwell’s plan to abandon Horn Hill.
  • Samwell warned Dickon that Euron’s cannons could destroy the castle, and Sarella asked how Dickon knew Highgarden had not already fallen.

Ch. 333The glory of Horn Hill (Part two)

Dickon chose to remain at Horn Hill so his family could escape, while Sarella led them north toward Highgarden. In King's Landing, Gary tested a flintlock and organized its improvements and production, then ordered preparations to manufacture cannons.

  • Dickon rejected Sarella's first suggestion and agreed that his mother and sisters should flee while he stayed to defend Horn Hill.
  • Samwell insisted on staying in Dickon's place, but Dickon knocked him unconscious and told his family to leave without him.
  • That night, Sarella led Melessa Florent, Dickon's sisters, and the unconscious Samwell through a secret passage and north in two carriages.
  • Four nights later, the travelers witnessed a dragon battling a sea monster outside Highgarden, then followed Highgarden's convoy north.
  • Gary test-fired a Valyrian steel flintlock, recorded flaws in its stock, powder wrapping, and bullets, and directed Hallyne to make improvements.
  • Gary told Melisandre to begin cannon production using ordinary steel and to enforce strict quality control.

Ch. 334The wedding

Gary arranged a lavish citywide celebration for Jaime and Brienne’s wedding while hosting House Tyrell and arranging Willas and Sansa’s marriage. As the feasts ended and the people queued for food, Samwell Tarly tried to get past the line to see King Luke.

  • Gary welcomed House Tyrell, promised Willas a seat on the Small Council, and assigned Loras a military command.
  • Gary arranged for Willas and Sansa to marry in the Red Keep on the same day as Jaime and Brienne’s public wedding.
  • Jaime and Brienne married at the Great Sept while Willas and Sansa married in the Red Keep, where Bran and Arya stayed with Sansa.
  • Melisandre and Hallyne demonstrated flintlock rifles to the gathered lords, and Gary’s food and wine distribution drew long queues across King’s Landing.
  • Samwell Tarly told a Gold Cloak he wanted to see King Luke, but the guard and the waiting crowd urged him to move along.

Ch. 335The threat from Dorne

Gary planned a covert expedition to Dorne after Prince Doran demanded Arianne Martell’s release and threatened him, while Teresa warned that Euron Greyjoy had enslaved the Drowned God. The chapter ended as Tyrion and Randyll Tarly brought Littlefinger Baelish and a short-haired Dornish girl before Gary.

  • Samwell and Salera left the Great Sept after failing to gain an audience with King Luke and noticed the hostile Dornish envoys.
  • Tyrion told Gary that Aegon VI had taken Tarth and demanded one million gold dragons for House Tarth’s release, and Gary offered only two hundred thousand for the Earl and his wife.
  • Gary read Prince Doran’s demand for Arianne Martell’s release and planned to free her publicly while secretly capturing her and Doran, recovering Myrcella, and stirring a succession conflict in Dorne.
  • Gary decided to lead the mission himself with Daenerys, Melisandre, Teresa, and the Holy Fire Tribunal, whose members he intended to empower with the Supreme God’s blessing.
  • After Teresa woke, she warned Gary that Euron Greyjoy had enslaved the Drowned God, possibly with help from R’hllor, and Gary ordered preparations for the Dorne expedition.
  • Tyrion and Randyll Tarly entered the Throne Room with a fat maester and a short-haired Dornish girl to meet Gary.

Ch. 336Justifications

Gary rejected Salera’s request to take Tyrion and Cersei, but accepted her offer to serve him and forge cannons while seeking reconciliation with Dorne. He assigned Randyll Tarly to capture and hold Deep Den, then asked Teresa to impersonate Tyene and gain the Sand Snakes’ trust.

  • Randyll Tarly told Gary that he had captured Baelish and learned about Euron Greyjoy’s cannon plot, while Samwell presented cannon materials and introduced Salera.
  • Salera revealed she was Prince Oberyn’s bastard daughter and offered to serve Gary if he handed over Tyrion and Cersei, but Gary refused and ordered her to remain in King’s Landing to oversee cannon production.
  • Salera asked to touch a dragon, and Gary sent Tyrion to take her to Princess Daenerys and follow her arrangements.
  • Gary ordered Randyll Tarly to capture Deep Den and hold it for three months, while forces from the Vale and Riverlands attacked Golden Tooth.
  • Gary asked Teresa to impersonate Tyene and win the Sand Snakes’ trust, and Teresa agreed in exchange for more Primal Stone Energy.
  • Gary asked Teresa where the Primal Stone came from and what it was.

Ch. 337Divine Power Crystal

Gary learned that mastering divine power would let him crystallize Primal Stone energy, and Teresa offered to help him and improve his blessings. At the shooting range, Gary gave the Holy Fire Tribunal new abilities before leaving for Dorne, while Tyrion’s gifts to Tysha ended in rejection.

  • Teresa explained that Gary could not crystallize the Primal Stone’s divine power until he mastered it, then offered her help and suggested he grant believers more varied abilities.
  • Gary visited the Holy Fire Tribunal’s shooting practice and gave Tysha Eagle Eye, letting her see over great distances.
  • Gary blessed the Tribunal’s members with Eagle Eye and stronger bodies, then accepted Tyrion’s clothes for their journey to Dorne.
  • Tyrion showed Tysha a Valyrian steel flintlock pistol he said Gary had given him, but she returned it and declared that his wife was dead.

Ch. 338A journey to Dorne (Part one)

Myrcella hid from Trystane after her face was injured, while Gary’s disguised party arrived in Sunspear aboard merchant ships. After learning that Doran and Myrcella were at the Water Gardens, Gary planned a hostage-taking mission and a quick escape from Dorne.

  • Myrcella refused to see Trystane, who pleaded with her to marry him despite her injuries and her expected return to King's Landing.
  • Dornish soldiers harassed Gary’s merchant fleet until Teresa revealed herself as Tyene Sand and drove them off.
  • Gary’s party went to Sunspear, where Teresa learned from Quentyn that Doran and Myrcella were staying at the Water Gardens.
  • Gary ordered Daenerys and Melisandre to remain in Sunspear and win over the Sand Snakes and Quentyn while he, Jaime, and Bronn went to seize Doran and retrieve Myrcella.
  • Gary planned for the group to regroup aboard the merchant ships before dark the next day and leave Dorne.

Ch. 339The journey to Dorne (Part two)

Gary, Jaime, and Bronn captured the Water Gardens so Jaime could retrieve Myrcella, and Gary demanded that Prince Doran accompany him to King's Landing. Jaime reunited with Myrcella while Gary prepared to leave Dorne with Doran as his captive.

  • Gary used ice constructs to map the Water Gardens and planned to seize Prince Doran before rescuing Myrcella.
  • Gary's Ice Warriors overwhelmed the Water Gardens' Dornish garrison, and the gates opened at dawn to welcome him, Jaime, and Bronn.
  • Gary revealed himself to Prince Doran as Luke Stark, explained that Jaime had come for his daughter Myrcella, and demanded that Doran go to King's Landing.
  • Prince Doran ordered his guards to attack, but Gary killed them and told Bronn to watch Doran and take him to the gates.
  • Gary and Jaime found Trystane trying to flee with Myrcella; Gary knocked Trystane unconscious and left Jaime and Myrcella to reunite.

Ch. 340Sand Snakes

Gary left the Water Gardens with Jaime, Myrcella, and the captured Martells, while Teresa tried to persuade the Sand Snakes to serve King Luke Stark. She proved her magical abilities to Obara and Nymeria, leaving them stunned by the revelation that she and Salera had joined Luke.

  • Gary refused Bronn's offer to destroy the Water Gardens, then explained that he would return to Sunspear without waiting for Arianne.
  • Jaime arrived with Myrcella and the unconscious Trystane, and Gary sent Myrcella in the carriage while the Martells rode on horseback.
  • Teresa summoned Obara, Nymeria, Ellaria, and the younger Sand Snakes, then admitted she served King Luke Stark and urged them to join him.
  • Obara and Nymeria threatened Teresa, so Teresa transformed into water and demonstrated that she could overpower Obara and heal her wound.
  • Teresa revealed that Salera was in King's Landing serving Luke and researching weapons, leaving Nymeria astonished that both sisters had pledged themselves to him.

Ch. 341The substitution (Part one)

Teresa persuaded Obara and Nymeria to help her take control of Dorne and decide who would rule after Prince Doran. As the Sand Snakes held Prince Quentyn in Sunspear, Gary arrived and killed him, planning to use a Faceless Man Mask to replace him if necessary.

  • Teresa said she intended to act immediately and asked Obara and Nymeria to support her plan to control Dorne after Prince Doran's death.
  • Gary and his companions reached Sunspear as the city was sealed, with Prince Doran hidden in a sack and the harbor under guard.
  • Teresa and the older Sand Snakes held Prince Quentyn in the Throne Room, while fire-wielding companions kept the soldiers outside at bay.
  • Gary entered the Throne Room, learned Quentyn had refused to swear allegiance, and beheaded him before leaving to obtain a Faceless Man Mask.
  • Teresa told Obara and Nymeria that the feared stranger was King Luke Stark.

Ch. 342The journey to Dorne (Part two)

Gary forced Trystane Martell to accept his plan to control Dorne, then installed lookalikes to impersonate Doran, Quentyn, and Trystane. At Skyreach, Garlan Tyrell waited for Luke Stark, who arrived in the form of an Ice Giant attacking the castle.

  • Gary threatened to kill Trystane and replace him with masked impostors, and Trystane agreed in exchange for a chance to see Myrcella.
  • Obara and Nymeria brought Gary three servants whose builds resembled the Martell princes, and Gary ordered them trained to act like princes.
  • Prince Doran appeared in Sunspear and blamed the palace crisis on an Ironborn assassin and Quentyn's collusion; Quentyn was imprisoned, and Doran later transferred power to Trystane.
  • Arianne confronted Garlan Tyrell at Skyreach, and Garlan said he was using her as bait to kill Luke Stark.
  • An Ice Giant wielding two ice blades broke through Skyreach's gates and attacked the soldiers, and Arianne recognized Luke Stark's magic.

Ch. 343The Warrior

Daenerys and Gary attacked Arianne, but Garlan survived Daenerys’s strike and brought down the castle, leaving Arianne buried in the ruins. Gary lost his White Walker hand in a dragonglass attack, and Garlan confronted him and Daenerys as the Warrior of the Seven.

  • Daenerys attacked Garlan and Arianne, but Garlan recovered from his cauterized wound and struck her through the castle walls.
  • Gary’s Ice Giants destroyed the castle’s foundation and carried the wounded Daenerys away, burying Arianne and Garlan beneath the collapse.
  • Garlan hurled a dragonglass greatsword at Gary, shattering an Ice Giant’s crown and Gary’s White Walker hand.
  • Gary healed Daenerys and tried to restore his left hand, only to discover it had become human and that he could no longer use Ice Magic.
  • Garlan confronted Gary and Daenerys, disarmed Gary’s attack with his bare hand, knocked both of them back, and declared himself the Warrior of the Seven.

Ch. 344The strongest of the Seven

Gary and Daenerys fought Garlan, the Warrior of the Seven, but his strength and rapid healing overwhelmed them. After Garlan caught them during their retreat, he demanded the Primal Stone and threatened to kill them both.

  • Gary healed his ribs and fought Garlan alongside Daenerys, who discovered that Garlan could restore his severed head and heal his wounds with water.
  • Garlan revealed his mastery of fire, transformed the battlefield with magma, and pressed Gary and Daenerys with his immense strength.
  • Gary noticed that a patch of clear water on Garlan’s body was healing him, and Daenerys identified it on his chest as the newly born Maiden of the Seven.
  • Gary severed Garlan’s arm with Falling Plum, then fled with Daenerys and said they needed to find Tysha and Teresa to defeat the Warrior.
  • Garlan hurled his sword through Gary and Daenerys, caught up with them, knocked Daenerys aside, and seized Gary while demanding the Primal Stone.

Ch. 345Divine Body

Aolixilade rescued Gary from Garlan and consumed the newly born Maiden, while the Stranger betrayed Garlan and stole the Warrior’s divine power. Aolixilade planned to hide the Divine Body in Gary’s left eye and release Nawija to challenge R’hllor, then caught up with Gary and Daenerys as they fled.

  • Aolixilade appeared, tore off Garlan’s arm, and consumed the Maiden that had been hidden in his chest.
  • Gary left to treat Daenerys, while Aolixilade told Garlan that someone else had already targeted him.
  • The Stranger emerged from Garlan’s shadow, revealed his alliance with Aolixilade, and drained the Warrior’s divine power until Garlan crumbled to dust.
  • Aolixilade and the Stranger planned to keep the Divine Body hidden in Gary’s left eye and use Nawija to oppose R’hllor.
  • Gary and Daenerys slipped away, but Aolixilade found them and ran alongside them, saying they could not escape her mark.

Ch. 346Sacrificing one for another (Part two)

Aolixilade told Gary that hatching the Primal Stone required sacrificing the Cold God, while warning that R'hllor would soon descend on Westeros. At the Wall, Jon Stark learned that the White Walkers were approaching and set out with Meera Reed and Jojen Reed to find the Three-Eyed Crow; in Dorne, Trystane became prince and gave the Sand Snakes command of a powerful force.

  • Aolixilade healed herself with Gary's Primal Stone Energy and explained that a god, likely the Cold God, had to be sacrificed to hatch the Primal Stone.
  • Aolixilade warned Gary that winter was coming and that neither she nor the Stranger could defeat R'hllor without his help.
  • Meera Reed and Jojen Reed arrived at Castle Black, where Jojen warned Jon Stark that the White Walkers' attack was near.
  • The Three-Eyed Crow showed Jon Stark the approaching army of wights and revealed that the Wall's protective runes would fail if the Old Gods died.
  • Jon Stark left beyond the Wall with Meera Reed, Jojen Reed, and twenty Rangers to meet the Three-Eyed Crow, while sending a raven to Luke Stark for support.
  • After Arianne died and Doran died of illness, Trystane inherited Dorne, sought an alliance with the Iron Throne, and gave the Sand Snakes command of five thousand soldiers.

Ch. 347Winter Is Coming (I)

Gary returned to King's Landing, then led an elite force north to support the Wall against the White Walkers and the coming Long Night. At Castle Black, he learned Jon Stark had gone beyond the Wall toward the Frostfangs and feared the Three-Eyed Crow was involved.

  • Trystane bid farewell to Myrcella, while Myrcella told Jaime she had repeated his words and Jaime instructed her to write Trystane another letter after they returned to King's Landing.
  • Gary discussed the Long Night with Daenerys and decided they had to hurry north to support the North against the White Walkers and the Cold God.
  • After reaching King's Landing, Gary summoned the Small Council and chose an elite force for the northern campaign, leaving Rhaegal and Viserion with Margaery to defend the Crownlands.
  • Gary's army marched north, and Bran answered Jon's plea for aid by telling him the king had already set out.
  • Gary reached Castle Black and discovered from Ygritte that Jon Stark had taken two members of House Reed beyond the Wall toward the Frostfangs, leaving Gary furious and worried about the Three-Eyed Crow.

Ch. 348Winter Is Coming (II)

A dragon-winged girl destroyed the Three-Eyed Crow and the greenseer, while Jon abandoned his mission as wights closed in. The Wall collapsed, and Gary began evacuations and preparations for the White Walkers as he waited for Jon and the Children of the Forest.

  • A black-cloaked girl claiming to act for Luke Stark drove Leaf, Green Grass, and Wind Spirit from the Three-Eyed Crow's cave, then burned the weirwood and the old man attached to it.
  • Jojen lost the Three-Eyed Crow's guidance as Jon's small force struggled through wights, so Jon ordered a retreat to the Wall.
  • The Children of the Forest left the cave and followed Jon's retreating troops toward the Wall.
  • Gary evacuated Castle Black after ice began falling from the Wall, which soon collapsed and killed Night's Watch members at other castles.
  • Gary ordered the evacuation of settlements north of Winterfell, sent the wildlings to defend the Wolfswood, and told Daenerys to return to Winterfell while he waited for Jon and the others.

Ch. 349The Wall's lament

After the Wall was destroyed, Gary prepared to retreat to Winterfell with Jon and the Children of the Forest while trying to understand who had caused the collapse. In the south, Aegon VI allied with the Red God Temple, and displaced clergy of the Faith of the Seven considered seeking support from the King in the North.

  • Teresa told Gary that Nawija, the Cold God, survived through sacrifices and that R'hllor was the only one who knew how Nawija came to be.
  • Jon and the Reed siblings found Gary at Castle Black, where he learned that Leaf and her companions suspected a Fire Wizard might have been involved in the Wall's destruction.
  • Gary led Jon, the Reed siblings, and the three Children of the Forest south toward Winterfell.
  • Aegon VI welcomed Benerro and the Red God Temple's priests, accepted their demands to establish R'hllor's worship in Westeros, and secured their help against King's Landing and its two Dragons.
  • After the Faith of the Seven was expelled from the Stormlands, its leader proposed approaching the King in the North because they shared enemies.

Ch. 350The Seven

Gary prepared Winterfell for the wight army’s arrival while Daenerys led evacuees south, but only fifty thousand people reached safety before the enemy was expected after sunset. As the forces assembled for battle, three apparent Lannister envoys arrived from King's Landing, leaving Gary questioning why they had come from House Lannister rather than the Westerlands.

  • Teresa told Gary that the wight army would reach the ruins of the Wall in three days and that they could not build another Wall.
  • Gary ordered weapons and wildfire prepared, then sent Daenerys and Bingling to drive the eighty thousand evacuees south without diverting the dragons from the coming battle.
  • After three days, Daenerys reported that fifty thousand people had reached safety and that the wight army would arrive at Winterfell after sunset.
  • Gary inspected Winterfell’s assembled forces, including the Holy Fire Tribunal inquisitors, Dragon Cavalry, Giants Cavalry, and the castle troops.
  • Three envoys bearing Lannister sigils arrived from King's Landing, and Gary asked whether they had come from the Westerlands.
