Background / History
Ancient Duties and Retreat to Uldaman
Archaedas received his power from Khaz’goroth and served as an Earth-Warder before Neltharion. During the Keepers’ ancient campaigns, he fought alongside the comrades who imprisoned the Elemental Lords and Old Gods. He also worked with Mimiron to build the Forge of Wills, which supported Azeroth’s world-soul and produced Titan-forged 345 413 419 423.
Following Loken’s betrayal, Archaedas and Ironaya brought surviving Earthen, Mechagnomes, and Vrykul to Uldaman. Many refugees already carried Yogg-Saron’s Curse of Flesh; the affected Earthen and Mechagnomes eventually became dwarves and gnomes. After losing their immortality, these transformed inhabitants gradually departed 185.
Unable to cure the curse and fearful of pursuit by Loken, Archaedas became disillusioned. He and Ironaya eventually entered a prolonged slumber, leaving the remaining Titan-forged to fend for themselves. Archaedas slept in the Seat of Khaz’goroth, Uldaman’s deepest chamber 185 346.
Awakening and Renewed Resolve
Archaedas awakened on his own when Aaron’s expedition reached his chamber. Seeing Aaron carry Truthguard and the Silver Hand Warhammer, he assumed that Tyr’s weapons had been stolen and attacked before Aaron could explain 184.
Xal’atath intervened, appearing as a winged figure of light and showing Archaedas a golden light that changed his attitude. He agreed to help Aaron, explained the dwarves’ origins, and allowed them to copy records from the Discs of Norgannon 185.
Initially, Archaedas rejected a counterattack against Ulduar as hopeless. He believed Loken was too powerful and that the survivors should await the Titans’ return. Aaron’s account of Loken’s weakened position persuaded him to resume his responsibilities. Archaedas awakened Ironaya, and the two began restoring Uldaman and preparing its sleeping Earthen and Mechagnomes for war 185 186.
Gathering the Expedition
Archaedas accompanied Aaron and Ygrim to Northrend. They used Proto-Dragons to reach the Dragonflayer Vrykul, where Ygrim appealed for help rescuing the Keepers. After undead forces seized Utgarde Keep, Archaedas scouted it and returned with no survivors found, reporting a powerful aura of death 277 283.
As Aaron secured support from the Dragonflights and Furbolg, Archaedas became increasingly confident in the counterattack. He requested Uldaman’s remaining troops and summoned Sea Giants to strengthen the expedition 345 358.
Reclaiming Ulduar
When Loken confronted the expedition, Archaedas initially appealed to their former friendship. Loken’s attacks forced him onto the defensive, and Archaedas resolved to destroy himself rather than be captured and corrupted. Aaron’s transformation into a stone giant allowed the two to fight together and drive Loken away 407 408.
Archaedas then helped reunite the scattered Keepers and gather reinforcements. He urged Thorim to suspend his war against the Frost Giants, secured machines and Mechagnome volunteers from Mimiron’s workshop, and joined the advance through Ulduar’s main entrance 410 413 422.
Inside Ulduar, he dismantled Kologarn to create a crossing over a chasm, then went with Ironaya and Ursoc to the Conservatory of Life. He returned with Freya and joined the Keepers’ battle against Loken and four Kraxxi 423 425 426.
After Loken was subdued, Archaedas stopped Thorim from killing him because his death would summon Algalon. His final attempts to reason with Loken failed; Loken’s body shattered, releasing corruption that threatened Yogg-Saron’s prison seal 427.
Once the seal stabilized, Archaedas entered the Celestial Planetarium. At Azeroth’s request, he concealed the hall while she confronted Algalon. He subsequently helped kill Yogg-Saron and began purifying its scattered remains with Aaron and Thorim 429 430 435.
Restoration Work and Odyn’s Return
Following the victory, Archaedas reported on the Keepers’ work clearing Yogg-Saron’s remains, creating bodies for souls collected by Azeroth, and restoring transportation facilities. He delivered a miniaturized ley line communicator from Mimiron to Aaron 482.
He later worked with Mimiron to repair the Chamber of Heart, a Titan facility that had helped stabilize Azeroth’s world-soul. While accompanying Aaron to Azsuna, he sensed the damage surrounding the Tomb of Sargeras and pledged to cleanse its Fel corruption after the remaining Yogg-Saron cleanup 497 501.
Archaedas also sought Odyn’s return. Their reunion became an argument, prompting Archaedas and Aaron to reveal the Pantheon’s fate and explain the future threats to Azeroth. When Odyn agreed to help, Archaedas volunteered to accompany Aaron into Helheim to free him from Helya’s confinement 514 515.
The Scarab Wall and Burning Legion
In Silithus, Archaedas and Mimiron discovered that Twilight’s Hammer had damaged the Scarab Wall’s barriers. Archaedas urged Aaron to finish addressing Yogg-Saron’s lingering threats before confronting C’Thun. After Cho’gall’s defeat, he showed Aaron a breach he had temporarily plugged with stone and helped arrange an appeal to the Bronze Dragonflight 543 547.
When Archimonde’s arrival exposed the Keepers’ diminished strength, Archaedas admitted that he could not face the demon alone. He departed for Northrend to mobilize the Keepers and argued that Odyn’s participation was essential 688.
During the battle against Archimonde, Archaedas wielded the Hammer of Khaz’goroth and helped save Thorim after his warhammer shattered. Despite being stronger than Hodir and Thorim in that battle, Archaedas suffered numerous wounds and required Malygos’s intervention to survive Archimonde’s counterattack 727.
Cataclysm and the War against N’Zoth
When Deathwing emerged from the Maelstrom, Archaedas prioritized stabilizing the earth rather than pursuing him. Acting on Azeroth’s instructions, he used the Hammer of Khaz’goroth to soothe the violent tremors 816.
During Deathwing’s attack on the Nexus, Archaedas overpowered the dragon’s Earth-Warder authority. Deathwing attempted to draw on the earth to protect his damaged armor, but Archaedas redirected that power into shackles, allowing the other Keepers to attack him 828.
Against N’Zoth, Archaedas and Odyn combined the Hammer of Khaz’goroth and Aegis of Aggramar to reinforce the Old God’s prison. Maintaining the containment demanded their full attention, leaving their companions to intercept N’Zoth’s tendrils and corruptive spells 833.
Appearance
- Natural form: An imposing stone giant approximately ten meters tall, carrying an enormous warhammer 184.
- Human form: Can assume human form, which he uses to examine Frostmourne closely 388.
- Variable size: Can enlarge or shrink his body; while confronting Kologarn, he limits his growth to avoid restricting his movements inside Ulduar 423.
Personality
Archaedas is fiercely protective of Tyr’s memory. His first reaction to Aaron carrying Tyr’s weapons is outrage, and he repeatedly holds Loken responsible for Tyr’s death. Nevertheless, memories of their former comradeship make him hesitate when confronting Loken 184 407 427.
His long withdrawal stems from fear and disillusionment rather than indifference to Azeroth. Aaron’s intervention restores his willingness to act, and Archaedas openly acknowledges that he might otherwise have remained asleep forever. His resolve eventually becomes strong enough that he would rather self-destruct than serve the Old Gods 185 186 408 409.
As a smith, he is intensely curious about unfamiliar craftsmanship. Frostmourne fascinates him despite its repellent aura because its construction follows a system different from the Titan techniques he knows. He also comes to recognize mortal potential, expressing surprise at the strength mortals can attain 388 501.
Abilities & Skills
Earth-Warder Authority
Archaedas possesses authority over earth derived from Khaz’goroth, with experience predating Neltharion’s tenure 419 423.
- Stone manipulation: Dismantles Kologarn’s stone body and turns it into a passage across a chasm 423.
- Seismic stabilization: Works to calm the Cataclysm’s tremors with the Hammer of Khaz’goroth 816.
- Corruption sensing: Detects the suffering of the land near the Tomb of Sargeras 501.
- Authority over Deathwing: Overrides Deathwing’s attempt to draw power from the earth and binds him with earthen shackles. Deathwing’s increased Old God power had not proportionally strengthened his Earth-Warder authority 828.
- Limit against Old Gods: His earth power makes little headway against N’Zoth’s body compared with the Holy Light 833.
Smithing and Titan Engineering
Archaedas is an outstanding smith trained in Titan forging methods 388.
- Artifact forging: Created Truthguard, which also contains Tyr’s power 28 128.
- Facility construction: Co-built the Forge of Wills with Mimiron 345.
- Military production: Directs Earthen weapon-forging for the Ulduar campaign and designs tools capable of cutting through frozen soil and rock 389 413.
- Restoration: Helps Mimiron repair the Chamber of Heart 497.
- Weapon analysis: Recognizes Frostmourne’s exceptional craftsmanship and studies its unfamiliar construction 388.
- Requested repairs: Kael’thas asks Aaron to have him repair the broken Flamestrike; completion is not established in that account 676.
Titan-Forged Body and Combat
His stone body supports immense strength, warhammer combat, and changes in size 184 423.
- Ordinary Iron Giants are not particularly formidable opponents to him 423.
- His recovery after awakening remains incomplete; fighting Kologarn helps him assess his condition 423.
- Loken initially outmatches him, though cooperation with Aaron reverses the battle 407 408.
- Even with the Hammer of Khaz’goroth, he remains decisively weaker than Archimonde 727.
Protective and Utility Magic
- Mental protection: Casts safeguards before handling Frostmourne; he states that previous exposure to Black Empire weapons had not allowed the Old Gods to corrupt him 388.
- Soul perception: Detects the tormented soul within Frostmourne, which Aaron identifies as Malygos 388.
- Water traversal: Enchants himself to run across the sea, though he travels much more slowly than a flying gryphon 501.
- Sound isolation: Prevents his conversation with Aaron and Odyn from carrying to nearby Vrykul 515.
- Titan systems: Reads the Discs of Norgannon and operates the Celestial Planetarium’s concealment facilities 185 429 430.
