Crane School and the 22nd Tournament

Tien Shinhan entered the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament as Master Shen’s disciple alongside Chiaotzu. He initially treated the Turtle School’s fighters with contempt and secretly directed Chiaotzu to manipulate the preliminary arrangements with psychic powers. In the quarterfinals, he defeated Yamcha and broke his leg, then boasted that sparing his life was an act of compassion 23 24.

Despite this cruelty, Tien retained a sincere interest in martial arts. He recognized Jackie Chun’s exceptional skill through his movements, breathing, and footwork. During their semifinal, Jackie Chun—Master Roshi in disguise—urged him to reject hatred and prejudice. Roshi then conceded despite holding the upper hand, leaving Tien questioning Master Shen’s teachings 25 27.

Watching Goku and Krillin’s friendly rivalry deepened that uncertainty. Tien narrowly defeated Goku in the final with a precisely aimed Tri-Beam, but took little joy in the championship. When Master Shen demanded to know why he had not killed Goku, Tien answered that martial arts should be about improvement rather than life-and-death contests. Roshi’s subsequent advice helped him embrace strength as a means of protecting others 28 29.

King Piccolo’s Return

After Krillin’s murder, Tien joined Roshi and Chiaotzu in searching for the Dragon Balls. When King Piccolo approached, Roshi incapacitated Tien with a drug and hid him in a cave, hoping to preserve him as a future defender if both Roshi and Goku were lost 30 36 39.

Tien regained consciousness in time to witness Roshi’s failed Evil Containment Wave. Still unable to move, he telepathically instructed Chiaotzu to wish King Piccolo out of existence before the Demon King could make his own wish. The attempt did not save Roshi or Chiaotzu; Tien later laid their bodies together and departed to learn the sealing technique himself 40 43.

After repeated practice, Tien challenged King Piccolo at his palace. Drum overwhelmed him, and his depleted stamina caused his Evil Containment Wave to fail, leaving him gravely injured. Goku arrived before Drum could finish him. Tien later rescued Goku from a massive blast, only to be taken hostage by King Piccolo. After Goku’s victory, Tien proposed another match at the next tournament 44 45.

Korin Tower and the Following Tournament

Tien trained at Korin Tower with Yamcha, Krillin, and Chiaotzu. His rivalry with Yamcha became a friendly exchange of techniques: he countered Yamcha’s newly developed Spirit Ball and welcomed the challenge it presented. During this period, Launch’s persistent companionship developed into a romantic relationship with him 50 61.

At the following tournament, Tien defeated Yajirobe in the preliminaries and encouraged Chiaotzu against Mercenary Tao. He rejected Tao’s accusation of betrayal, explaining that they opposed Master Shen’s teaching methods but had not joined the Turtle School 69.

Tien again defeated Yamcha, using three duplicates to overwhelm him. However, recognizing the danger posed by Piccolo Jr., he forfeited his semifinal against Goku and entrusted the final confrontation to him 72 73.

Teaching and Family Life

Although Tien had considered founding his own school, he accepted Wumu’s invitation to teach at the Ultimate Path School. At Goku and Chi-Chi’s wedding, he announced his intention to settle there with Launch. The school was located on Plum Blossom Island in East City 61 76.

By the five-year time skip, Tien and Launch had been married for three years and had a roughly two-year-old son, Tianle. Tien had originally considered separating Launch’s two personalities with the Dragon Balls, but both personalities declined. They instead chose to wish for their consciousnesses to blend together 61 79.

Saiyan Invasion

Before Raditz’s arrival, Tien joined Krillin, Xiao Jie, and Chiaotzu in a four-on-one spar against Goku. Even their combined attacks and Tien’s Tri-Beam could not overcome him 80 81.

After a year of preparation for Vegeta and Nappa, Tien and Xiao Jie ate their strength-enhancing fruit. Tien led the defenders from the Lookout, intending to delay the Saiyans until Goku returned. He defeated a Saibaman, fought Nappa, and knocked him away before moving to attack the temporarily blinded Vegeta 90 92 93.

Tien survived the battle but was incapacitated. After Piccolo woke him, he mourned Chiaotzu and reminded Xiao Jie that the Dragon Balls could restore their friends—while acknowledging that Chiaotzu could not be revived a second time by Earth’s Dragon Balls 95.

Planet Namek

On Namek, Tien sensed an evil presence more than ten times stronger than Vegeta and warned Krillin to remain hidden. He later reasoned that Wumu and Kami had sent them to the planet for a purpose beyond simply collecting Dragon Balls 103 106.

When Goku ordered the others to escape with the Dragon Balls while he faced Frieza, Tien broke down in frustration at his inability to contribute. Goku reminded him that Chiaotzu still needed saving, helping him accept the withdrawal 119.

After Frieza’s defeat, Tien asked that Yalijia be revived first, putting Xiao Jie’s grief before his own. The group restored their fallen companions and prepared to return to Earth 122.

Android Crisis

Tien later helped receive the mysterious young man seeking Goku with special medicine. During the android crisis, his power had reached 200,000, but Xiao Jie’s breakthrough exposed the widening gap between them 130 135.

After the initial android confrontation, Tien urged everyone to return to the school and resume training. Inspired by Xiao Jie, he was determined not to remain a bystander in future battles. He also questioned Trunks about the future androids and his own strength to clarify the threat they faced 136 137.

Personality

Tien initially displays arrogance, brutality, and intense loyalty to Master Shen. His treatment of Yamcha shows how thoroughly he has absorbed the Crane School master’s hostility. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge an opponent’s skill and warns Chiaotzu not to underestimate the Turtle School fighters 23 24 26.

His defining change is a shift from proving superiority to pursuing self-improvement and protecting others. Roshi’s guidance reaches him because his underlying love of martial arts is genuine. That change does not erase every questionable habit: at the later tournament, he again asks Chiaotzu to manipulate the draw so their group receives separate preliminary assignments 27 29 69.

Usually quiet and composed, Tien becomes visibly bashful around Launch and embarrassed by his friends’ teasing. His concern for others also extends beyond his closest companions, as shown when he prioritizes Yalijia’s revival for Xiao Jie’s sake 61 67 76 122.

Repeatedly falling behind stronger fighters weighs heavily on him. Against Frieza, that frustration reduces him to tears; later, Xiao Jie’s success becomes a reason to train harder rather than accept a supporting role 119 136.
