Approximately 120 power level 3 Wumu's estimate of Goku's strength during the early tournament, based on information remembered from his previous life—not a direct measurement.
Kamehameha surpasses Jackie Chun's 8 Overpowers Jackie Chun's energy wave and copies his Afterimage Technique, immediately producing a triple afterimage.
Power increase at Korin Tower 44 Emerges with greatly increased strength and the ability to sense King Piccolo's location. The passage does not identify the source of the increase.
Lookout training 46 51 Trains under Mr. Popo, spars with Mutaito through journeys into the past, and develops greater precision, speed, and mental composure.
Fivefold increase from a Fruit of Might; later exceeds 4,000 79 Eats one fruit supplied by Wumu. His Saiyan potential produces a fivefold increase, followed by further growth through years of training.
4,120 power level 83 Releases his full power while confronting Raditz, shocking both Raditz and Piccolo.
Kaioken learned 89 Deduces the technique by studying the trial opponent Kakarot's ki circulation. His first attempt at triple power exceeds his body's tolerance.
Spirit Bomb learned; further power increase 91 Completes the Pendulum Room's nature-energy trial. A silver-white clock merges with his body afterward, increasing his power.
Triple Kaioken; forced escalation to eightfold 96 Uses triple Kaioken to overpower Vegeta's Galick Gun. Against Great Ape Vegeta, pushes through progressively higher multipliers until blood vessels in his arms burst.
110,000 power level 105 Reaches this strength through spaceship training en route to Namek. Dodoria initially reads only 18,000 on his scouter.
160,000 power level 113 The Grand Elder unlocks part of his latent potential, raising him from 110,000. The elder cannot release all of his potential.
320,000 with Kaioken 118 Doubles his 160,000 power level against Tāburu, but remains badly outmatched.
Near-death recovery increase 118 Recovers with Krillin's Senzu Bean after Tāburu's beating and returns to intercept Tāburu's attack on Vegeta.
3,000,000 power level; Tenfold Kaioken 120 Secretly eats a Senzu Bean while restrained by Frieza. His healed power rises to three million, and Tenfold Kaioken lets him break free.
Super Saiyan 131 135 137 Tells Trunks he has not reached the transformation when they first meet; achieves it during the following three years. The androids possess an outdated reading of 150 million from his early transformation.

GT Timeline Counterpart

These developments belong to the alternate-timeline Goku encountered by Wumu, not the main-timeline character 127.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Estimated base power of 30 billion 127 Wumu estimates this value from his knowledge of GT Goku; it is not presented as a scouter measurement.
Super Saiyan; estimated 1.5 trillion 127 128 Transforms during his spar with Wumu. His control is refined enough to transform without an initial eruption of ki, impressing Ganazi and Raditz.
Super Saiyan 2 140 Passes through this transformation while powering up against Baby-possessed Vegeta.
Super Saiyan 3 140 Continues escalating his power during the same confrontation.
Super Saiyan 4 140 Reaches this form with red hair before fighting Baby.

Appearance

  • Childhood: Introduced as a small boy with large eyes and a furry, prehensile tail 1 5 32.
  • Martial arts clothing: Receives a red Turtle School uniform with the “turtle” character on its left breast. His tournament clothing is later described as his signature orange uniform 2 8.
  • After Lookout training: Stands 1.75 meters tall, with more defined muscles, and moves easily despite specially weighted clothing 51.
  • Tail loss: No longer has his Saiyan tail by the fight with Vegeta; the trial opponent Kakarot's tail makes him nostalgic 88 96.
  • GT counterpart: Has spiky hair and wears a blue martial arts uniform. Pilaf's wish later reduces him to a child of about ten, leaving his clothes hanging loosely around him 126 139.

Personality

Goku treats martial arts as a source of enjoyment rather than merely a profession or obligation. He is disappointed when tournament matches do not begin immediately, seeks strong opponents after defeats, and tells Master Roshi that training itself is fun. His eagerness to challenge Wumu persists even after Wumu becomes overwhelmingly stronger 2 12 26 51.

His friendliness coexists with considerable social naïveté. He fails to recognize Yamcha after a hairstyle change, does not recognize the grown Chi-Chi, and asks what marriage means before agreeing to honor his childhood promise. He also readily admits mistakes, apologizing to Yajirobe once he realizes that the man's Dragon Ball is not his stolen keepsake 1 35 69 75.

Goku is fiercely protective of friends and family. He condemns Tien Shinhan for attacking an unconscious Yamcha, pursues Krillin's killer despite exhaustion, and immediately chases Raditz after Gohan's abduction. His determination can become dangerous stubbornness: he refuses to surrender under Jackie Chun's electrical attack even when warned that he might die 9 24 29 82.

His mercy is selective rather than absolute. He kills Tambourine and King Piccolo, but cannot bring himself to kill his defeated brother Raditz. He also spares Piccolo because killing him would kill Kami, and initially demands that Vegeta and Frieza leave rather than immediately seeking their deaths 37 45 75 84 96 116.

Abilities & Skills

  • Uses Monkey Fist, dropping to all fours and adopting unpredictable movements to counter Drunken Fist 8.
  • Learns Kaioken by sensing his opponent's ki flow through physical contact 89.
  • Defeats Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Xiao Jie, and Chiaotzu in a four-on-one spar 80 81.

Kamehameha

His signature concentrated ki wave, fired from cupped hands.

  • Overpowers Jackie Chun's and Krillin's Kamehameha waves 8 28.
  • Kills Tambourine with a direct hit 37.
  • Defeats Piccolo with a maximum-output Kamehameha 74 75.
  • Combines the technique with triple Kaioken to overcome Vegeta's Galick Gun 96.
  • Uses a Super Kamehameha to stop Great Ape Vegeta's blast, but exhausts the beam's energy in the process 96.

Kaioken

A temporary amplification technique learned in Wumu's Pendulum Room trial.

  • Produces a red aura and increases his power beyond its normal level 89 95.
  • Initially cannot withstand triple power; later uses that multiplier successfully against Vegeta 89 96.
  • Excessive escalation damages his body, including ruptured blood vessels during the Great Ape battle 96.
  • Reaches Tenfold Kaioken during his battle with Frieza 120.

Ki Sensing, Flight, and Mental Discipline

Training develops both Goku's awareness and his control over movement.

  • Senses King Piccolo's location after his power increase at Korin Tower 44.
  • Practices Mr. Popo's discipline of “the serenity of the sky” and “the swiftness of lightning” 51.
  • Flies independently during aerial sparring and while pursuing Raditz 80 82.
  • Tracks his friends' ki while rushing to the Saiyan battlefield 91.

Spirit Bomb

Learns to communicate with nature and receive its energy during the Pendulum Room's final stage.

  • Draws blue light from the grass and plants around him into his body 91.
  • Identifies the technique as the Spirit Bomb; the provided passage shows its acquisition rather than its use in battle 91.

Heaven-and-Earth Piercing Fist

A decisive attack used against King Piccolo.

  • Uses a ki blast to propel his injured body upward, then punches through Piccolo's chest 45.

Super Saiyan Transformations

The main-timeline Goku achieves Super Saiyan during the three years following Trunks's warning 131 137.

  • His early transformation produces energy readings recorded by Dr. Gero's surveillance, but those readings become outdated as his base strength grows 135.
  • By the end of the android confrontation, he and Vegeta both know that forms beyond Super Saiyan exist 136.
  • His GT counterpart demonstrates Super Saiyan through Super Saiyan 4 and uses Instant Transmission tactically in battle 127 128 140.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Tournaments and the Red Ribbon Army

Goku enters the World Martial Arts Tournament with Krillin under Master Roshi's supervision. He defeats Giran after escaping the Rubber Band technique, then faces Jackie Chun in a match featuring Kamehameha clashes, copied afterimages, and Monkey Fist 1 5 8 9.

Afterward, he sets out to recover his grandfather's keepsake and continue training. He defeats the Red Ribbon Army and gathers all seven Dragon Balls, which Wumu borrows to leave Earth. At a later tournament, Goku defeats Krillin in the semifinal but narrowly loses the final to Tien Shinhan 12 15 16 28.

King Piccolo

Krillin's murder sends Goku after Tambourine while still exhausted from the tournament. He loses their first encounter but wins the rematch after recovering. King Piccolo then overwhelms him and leaves him unconscious, prompting Yajirobe to carry him away for treatment 29 32 37 38.

Following recovery and a substantial power increase at Korin Tower, Goku returns to confront the Demon King. Despite severe injuries, he kills Piccolo with the Heaven-and-Earth Piercing Fist. Piccolo launches the egg containing his successor before dying 43 44 45.

Lookout Training, Piccolo, and Family Life

Goku trains under Mr. Popo on Kami's Lookout, including journeys into the past to spar with Mutaito. When Wumu visits, Goku challenges him but cannot land a meaningful attack; Wumu even crushes his Kamehameha by hand 46 51.

At the next tournament, Goku recognizes King Piccolo's son and eventually defeats him. He refuses to kill Piccolo because their shared life would also condemn Kami. Afterward, Chi-Chi identifies herself, and Goku agrees to fulfill his marriage promise 69 75.

During the following five years, Goku becomes a father and holds a salaried position at the Ultra Instinct School. His attendance is irregular, and when present he mainly spars with Ganazi rather than teaching students 79.

Saiyan Invasion

Raditz reveals Goku's Saiyan heritage and original mission to eradicate Earth's humans. Goku rejects both the mission and the name Kakarot. After Raditz abducts Gohan, Goku pursues him and helps corner him alongside Piccolo 81 82 83.

Warned that stronger Saiyans will arrive within a year, Goku undertakes Wumu's Pendulum Room trials. He learns Kaioken and the Spirit Bomb before facing Vegeta. Although he wins their beam clash, Great Ape Vegeta overwhelms him; Gohan restores him with a Senzu Bean 84 85 88 89 91 96 97.

Planet Namek

Following Wumu's instructions, Goku and his companions travel to Namek rather than immediately use Earth's Dragon Balls. Spaceship training raises his strength enough to defeat Dodoria easily, and the Grand Elder subsequently unlocks more of his potential 98 105 113.

Goku defeats Ginyu but suffers a crushing defeat against Tāburu. After recovering, he joins the struggle against Frieza, accepts Vegeta's plea to avenge the Saiyans, and escalates to Tenfold Kaioken 118 120.

Android Warning and Heart Virus

Trunks warns Goku of powerful enemies arriving in three years and gives him medicine. Goku trains, achieves Super Saiyan, and confronts Androids 19 and 20 with his companions. Dr. Gero identifies himself as a surviving Red Ribbon Army enemy seeking revenge 131 135 137.

When Trunks returns, he explains that his future's Goku died of a heart virus rather than in battle. The present Goku remains healthy and has not taken the medicine 137.

GT Timeline Counterpart

Wumu encounters an older, more experienced Goku during a tournament match with Uub. Their subsequent spar showcases Goku's tactical Instant Transmission, refined Super Saiyan control, and Super Kamehameha 126 127 128.

Later, Goku investigates the Lookout with Pan and is accidentally reduced to childhood by Pilaf's wish. After returning from space to find Earth infested by Baby's eggs, he confronts Baby-possessed Vegeta and transforms into Super Saiyan 4 139 140.
