Background / History

Saiyan Survivor and Planetary Conqueror

Vegeta is one of the Saiyans who survive Planet Vegeta’s destruction. Ganazi recognizes him as the Saiyan prince, while Wumu identifies him among the surviving Saiyans working under Frieza 21.

Vegeta spends years conquering inhabited planets for Frieza. On Planet Phenomena, he learns of Raditz’s apparent death and Earth’s wish-granting Dragon Balls. He plans to obtain immortality, continue growing stronger, and eventually overthrow Frieza. After selling the devastated planet, he and Nappa begin a year-long journey to Earth 85 102.

Invasion of Earth

Vegeta and Nappa land in North City. Vegeta initially considers Earth valuable merchandise, then directs Nappa to stop attacking civilians so they can locate Raditz’s opponents and learn where the Dragon Balls are 90.

During the confrontation, Vegeta recognizes that Earth’s fighters can conceal their power and destroys his unreliable Scouter. He overwhelms several defenders, kills the defeated Nappa, and kills Yalijia when she attempts to cover Krillin and Gohan’s escape. He then interrogates Piccolo about the Dragon Balls until Goku intervenes 91 92 94.

Goku overcomes Vegeta’s Galick Gun with a Kaio-ken-enhanced Kamehameha. Vegeta responds by creating an artificial moon and becoming a Great Ape, leaving Goku unable to continue fighting. The returning defenders bring Senzu Beans, allowing Goku to recover and destroy the artificial moon 96 97.

Surrounded and injured, Vegeta summons his spacecraft. Goku prevents Xiao Jie from finishing him off and allows him to escape. Vegeta reaches Frieza Force Base No. 79, collapses, and is placed in a Healing Tank 97.

Race for Namek’s Dragon Balls

After recovering, Vegeta discovers that Frieza is pursuing Namek’s Dragon Balls and suspects his Scouter was used to overhear his plans. He kills Cui, leaves the base, and heads for Namek himself 102.

On Namek, Vegeta uses his newly developed ki-sensing and suppression skills to avoid stronger enemies. His plan is to let Frieza’s forces and the Earthlings fight, then hide one Dragon Ball so neither side can complete the set 104 113.

Frieza eventually forces Vegeta into submission and orders Tāburu to treat him. Vegeta briefly prioritizes wishing to become a Super Saiyan over immortality, believing strength offers his best chance of escape 115 116.

Emerging with a power level of 600,000, Vegeta attacks Frieza and declares himself “Super Vegeta.” His confidence collapses when Frieza reveals vastly greater strength. After another failed attack, Vegeta is brutally humiliated and asks Goku to avenge the Saiyans, naming Frieza as the destroyer of their homeworld and the killer of their fathers 118 119 120.

After Raditz and Ganazi defeat Frieza, Ganazi explains Super Saiyan transformation to the survivors. Vegeta still seeks immortality, but Porunga refuses: the dragon cannot grant eternal life when his own creator has a limited lifespan. Vegeta relinquishes the wish, and the group prepares to return to Earth with him 122.

Life on Earth and the Androids

Vegeta initially wanders without a permanent home. He rejects Goku’s offer of accommodation and paid work as a martial arts instructor, unwilling to live and work alongside a former enemy. He eventually stays at Capsule Corporation, where his late-night training causes arguments with Bulma 130.

After Trunks warns of enemies arriving in three years, Vegeta insists he will defeat them himself. He trains to become a Super Saiyan before Goku, and both have mastered the transformation by the androids’ arrival 130 131 135.

Vegeta fights Androids 19 and 20 alone. Although they absorb his ki blasts, he overwhelms them physically, tears off Android 19’s arms, and kills him with a knife-hand strike. He then attacks the fleeing Android 20 with a Galick Gun, ending the immediate confrontation. Rather than remain with the group, he leaves determined to reach the next transformation before Goku 136.

GT Timeline

The GT material depicts a separate counterpart rather than a documented continuation of the main-timeline Vegeta’s training. After the Buu incident, this Vegeta has begun falling behind Goku; he rushes toward the enormous energy released during Goku’s spar with Wumu 128.

Baby later possesses Vegeta and uses his body against Goku. Goku hesitates to seriously harm Vegeta’s body and suffers severe injuries. Wumu intervenes and extracts Baby, restoring Vegeta’s consciousness but leaving him exhausted 140 141.

Against Syn Shenron, Vegeta and Goku both use Super Saiyan 4. After their joint attack fails, they fuse into Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. Even the fusion cannot win before its time expires 143.

Appearance

Personality

Vegeta’s identity centers on royal status, elite-warrior pride, and strength. He considers losing to a “Low-Class Warrior” intolerable, making Goku’s resistance especially humiliating. His early ruthlessness extends to his own followers: he kills Nappa after his defeat and explicitly denies that Nappa was his companion 94 95 96.

His ambition initially combines revenge with self-preservation. He wants immortality to outlast Frieza, but will hide, suppress his power, or temporarily submit when he cannot win. Frieza’s overwhelming strength exposes the fear beneath his defiance 85 104 115 116.

On Namek, his grief over the Saiyans breaks through his usual arrogance. Unable to avenge them himself, he tearfully entrusts that task to Goku. He later becomes less evil, but remains aloof and resistant to cooperation; Goku worries that he will endanger their plans by insisting on fighting alone 120 131.

Vegeta’s rivalry with Goku becomes his principal training motivation. He rejects ordinary employment, trains late into the night, and measures success by whether he can master a transformation before Goku does 130 136.

Vegeta combines rapid movement with forceful punches, kicks, elbows, and knife-hand strikes.
