Background / History

Meeting Lu Chen

Lu Chen found Na'er crouching beside a road while searching for a Blacksmiths' Association. Her bloodline strongly attracted him, while she felt an unexplained attraction to something within him. She accepted his outstretched hand and followed him. When several youths approached them, Lu Chen shielded her and released his Martial Soul, frightening them away 3.

Na'er told him that she did not think she had parents and wanted to stay with him. He brought her to Red Mountain Orphanage, where the director welcomed her and arranged for them to share a room. Na'er had not eaten for several days, so Lu Chen took her to the dining hall and gave her most of his meat 4 5.

Life at the Orphanage

Na'er remained with Lu Chen through the following three years. She waited for him after his forging lessons, shared meals with him, and called him “Big Brother.” He promised to cultivate diligently and protect her for the rest of his life 6 7 8.

During Lu Chen's bloodline awakening, Na'er sensed pressure unlike that of the dragons of their plane. Di Tian appeared and addressed her as “my lord,” revealing an authority she concealed from Lu Chen. When Di Tian urged her to leave, she asked for more time to say a proper goodbye 8.

Departure

Before leaving, Na'er asked Lu Chen to walk with her by the sea. She repeatedly asked whether he would miss her, then embraced him after he assured her that he would. Although she wanted to speak, she could not explain her secrets or say when they would meet again 12.

The following morning, Lu Chen found her bed empty and a letter left behind. The director told him that Na'er's family had come to take her home 13.

Reunion at Shrek Academy

Lu Chen later found Na'er at the Sea God Pavilion, playing on a swing with Yun Ming and Yali beside her. She immediately rushed to him and explained to Yun Ming, whom she called “Master,” that Lu Chen was the brother who had protected her and given her a home 65.

When Lu Chen departed the next morning, Na'er watched him leave in tears. Asked by Yun Ming whether she liked him, she nodded. Yun Ming encouraged her to become stronger and pursue him herself 66.

She is considerate toward both people and animals. She rejects Lu Chen's suggestion of teasing birds because it would frighten them, and readily forgives a boy who nearly splashes broth onto her skirt 7.

Her attachment to Lu Chen coexists with concealed knowledge and responsibilities. She hides her unusual reactions to his power, privately speaks with Di Tian, and struggles to explain why she must leave. Her later admission to Yun Ming establishes that her feelings extend beyond simply calling Lu Chen her brother 8 11 12 66.
