Background / History
Origin and Selection
The Jiao Snake originally possessed a flood dragon bloodline and the potential to become an elite Soul Beast. However, its genes were fused with those of an ordinary wild beast, causing a reverse mutation. Classified by the Spirit Transmitter as partially defective, it was placed in the random Spirit Soul draw, where Lu Chen obtained it 10.
Despite its weakness, Lu Chen was pleased with the result, considering a hundred-year Spirit Soul far beyond his likely luck. He returned to the orphanage with the director and prepared to absorb the Jiao Snake in his dormitory 10.
Transformation and Replacement
When Lu Chen poked the Spirit Soul Ball, the Jiao Snake’s horns cut his fingertip. It greedily absorbed the resulting drop of blood, writhed as light flashed across its scales, and entered his forehead as a streak of white light. At the same time, Lu Chen was pulled into Nibelungen, where Fenrir and Constantine examined the transformed Spirit Soul 10.
Constantine explained that, according to the World Tree, either he or Fenrir could take the snake’s place as Lu Chen’s first Spirit Soul. Fenrir volunteered so that he could explore the outside world. When he entered Lu Chen’s Sea of Spirit, the newly evolved Jiao Snake hissed and curled into a motionless ball under his pressure. Fenrir swallowed it in one gulp and became Lu Chen’s Spirit Soul instead 10 11.
Appearance
- Small, serpentine form: Described as a little snake with scales and slender horns 10.
- Extremely sharp horns: Sharp enough to slice Lu Chen’s fingertip upon contact 10.
- Transformation effects: Strange light flickered across its scales after it absorbed Lu Chen’s blood 10.
Relationships
- Lu Chen — Obtained the Jiao Snake through the random Spirit Soul draw. His blood triggered its initial evolution, but it never became his first Spirit Soul 10 11.
- Fenrir — Replaced it as Lu Chen’s first Spirit Soul after swallowing it within the Sea of Spirit 11.
Story Role
- Concealment of Fenrir’s fusion: Lu Chen told Na’er and Tang Wulin that the ten-year Jiao Snake had mutated together with his Martial Soul, producing a hundred-year Soul Ring. This was a cover story: the ring came from Fenrir and had been disguised as an ordinary pale-yellow hundred-year ring 11.
- Precedent for later Spirit Soul replacements: Lu Chen subsequently regarded ordinary Spirit Souls as potential “snacks” that the Dragon Kings within him could consume before becoming his Spirit Souls 13.
