Background / History
Meeting the Straw Hats
Usopp first confronted Luffy, Xia Chen, Zoro, and Nami from a hill overlooking Syrup Village. With flags rising from the bushes behind him, he claimed to command eighty million subordinates and demanded that the visitors retreat. Xia Chen countered with his own claim to be Pirate King Roger’s nephew, boasting of followers with billion-Beli bounties and frightening Usopp 14 15.
Despite his trembling legs, Usopp aimed his slingshot at the group rather than allow them to threaten his village. His nerve eventually failed, but the encounter became friendly when Luffy revealed that he knew Yasopp. Over a meal, Usopp learned that his father sailed with Shanks and enthusiastically praised his courage 15.
Defending Syrup Village
Usopp regularly visited Kaya to tell her stories after her parents’ deaths. During one visit, he punched her butler, Klahadore, for insulting Yasopp; Kaya intervened before he could strike again 16.
Usopp and Luffy later overheard Klahadore and Jango discussing a plan to kill the villagers. Usopp ran through the village warning of a pirate attack, but afterward told his three young followers that the warning had been another lie. They criticized him for supposedly slandering the butler and left, while his resolve to stop the attack remained firm 18 19.
The Straw Hats agreed to defend the village because of Usopp’s determination. He obtained oil for their preparations and, when no attackers appeared at their position, realized that the pirates had probably landed on the island’s northern side 19.
At the northern slope, Xia Chen assigned him to fight Jango. Usopp reluctantly charged, then retreated behind Xia Chen when Jango hypnotized the pirates into a murderous advance. Later, although he could not follow Kuro’s Silent Step, Usopp recognized the danger to Kaya and shouted for her to run; Xia Chen intercepted Kuro before he could seize her 20 21 22.
Joining the Crew
After Kuro’s defeat, Kaya gave the Straw Hats a light sailing ship, the Going Merry. Usopp initially spoke as though he would meet them again as a rival pirate, but Xia Chen called him aboard and Luffy declared that they were already crewmates. Moved to tears, Usopp immediately asked whether he would be captain, only to be refused 22.
Aboard the Going Merry, he replaced Luffy’s poorly drawn pirate flag with one the crew approved. He also helped Luffy retrieve and feed fresh oranges to Yosaku after Xia Chen diagnosed the sick man with scurvy 23.
Cocoyasi Village and the Grand Line
At Cocoyasi Village, the others briefly believed Johnny’s report that Nami had killed Usopp. Usopp reappeared alive and explained that Nami had stabbed herself to protect him, prompting Luffy to set out to reclaim their navigator. After Arlong’s defeat, Usopp entertained the liberated villagers with a false account of having beaten Arlong with one punch 30 33.
When Luffy received a twenty-five-million-Beli bounty, Usopp celebrated his own appearance on the poster—even though only the back of his head was visible. During the escape from Loguetown, Luffy gathered Usopp, Zoro, and Sanji into his stretched arms and carried them back to the ship, leaving all three furious at the painful journey 35 42.
Inside Laboon, Usopp noticed that the apparent clouds and birds were painted and motionless. During the subsequent voyage, he beat Luffy in a snowman-building contest. At Whiskey Peak, he eagerly accepted the town’s hospitality and told listeners that he had defeated the whale with a single punch 44 49 50.
Early Training and Little Garden
Xia Chen included Usopp and Nami in lessons intended primarily to teach them Observation Haki, while also demonstrating Soru, Geppo, Rankyaku, and Kami-e as optional techniques. He subsequently subjected the crew to repeated combat training and asked Vivi and Mr. 9 to spar with Nami and Usopp. To motivate Usopp, he invoked Yasopp’s position aboard Shanks’s ship and asked whether Usopp wanted his father to regard him as weak. After three days, Usopp and the other trainees had grown stronger, although none had yet mastered Armament Haki 54 55.
The training did not immediately overcome his fear. On the approach to Little Garden, he briefly tried to maintain a brave expression before agreeing with Nami that remaining aboard would be safer. When the two encountered Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, their ingrained cowardice still left them uncertain despite their recent improvement. Usopp was nevertheless described as the hardest-working trainee during this period and reaffirmed his determination to become a brave warrior of the sea 56 61.
While Nami recuperated under Kureha’s care, Usopp joined Luffy and Chopper in a snowball fight. After they turned on Xia Chen together, Xia Chen created fifteen clones and overwhelmed them with snowballs, sending the trio running 73.
Alabasta and Sky Island
During the voyage toward Alabasta, Xia Chen observed that Usopp and Sanji were progressing more quickly in Observation Haki than in Armament Haki, although this did not establish that Usopp had mastered it. Usopp also befriended Mr. 2 before learning of his Baroque Works affiliation, reacting to the discovery as a personal betrayal. When Crocodile inadvertently explained his weakness to water, Usopp mocked him for helping his own opponents 76 88.
After the Alabasta events, Usopp received an individual bounty poster along with the other Straw Hats. Rather than simply enjoying the recognition, he and Nami worried about being targeted. The Marines’ labels for Usopp, Sanji, and Nami also provoked ridicule from their companions, leading the three to attack Luffy 98.
On the journey to Sky Island, Usopp was among the crewmates who struggled to breathe while passing through the clouds. After Xia Chen protected only himself, Nami, and Robin, the others confronted and attacked him, only to be knocked back 112.
In the Ordeal of Swamp, Usopp attempted to impress Chopper by catching what he believed was a spider. His repeated attempts to lift it instead pulled the priest Gedatsu out of the ground. Recognizing that Gedatsu’s eyes had rolled back and left him unable to see, Usopp and Chopper quietly coordinated an attack. Usopp fired a Gunpowder Star that set the priest’s clothes alight, creating an opening for Chopper to attack 124.
Thriller Bark and the White Tiger Fruit
Usopp’s fear of ghosts became especially pronounced in the Florian Triangle. He clung to Sanji for protection and rejected the suggestion that he rely on Luffy, reasoning that Luffy would charge directly at any ghost. When Brook came aboard, Usopp boasted of possessing an evil-spirit-repelling kit and noticed that the skeleton had no shadow. Brook’s explanation revealed his inability to survive sunlight and his connection to Gecko Moria 135 137.
Although reassured by his stronger companions’ confidence against Moria, Usopp still wanted to leave Thriller Bark. Nevertheless, when his companions were fighting, he resolved to help despite trembling with fear. He took a newly made weapon into battle and encouraged Chopper to follow, while also asking Chopper to save him if necessary. During the coordinated battle against Oars, his Fire Star engulfed the giant zombie in flames after his crewmates disrupted its balance 138 140 146 147.
Afterward, Usopp chose to accept the White Tiger Fruit from Xia Chen. He recognized that his ordinary physique could not compare with those of Luffy and Zoro and saw the fruit as an opportunity to become stronger. He ate the entire fruit because he feared that taking only one bite would yield less power, leaving him kneeling and retching. His acquisition made him the crew’s fourth Mythical Zoan user 154.
The Going Merry, Impel Down, and Marine Headquarters
Before the crew reached Water 7, minor damage to the Going Merry was routinely left to Usopp to repair. He understood the limits of his work: he could manage simple repairs but lacked the expertise of a professional shipwright for more serious damage 158.
Usopp was later imprisoned on Impel Down’s fifth underground level with Nami, Chopper, and Brook. Xia Chen reunited with them and broke their Seastone Handcuffs. During the escape, Usopp stepped forward to confront Magellan’s Poison Cloud, surrounding himself with a mist-like phantom tiger and preparing a powerful roar. At this stage, he had not possessed the White Tiger Fruit long enough to achieve a complete tiger transformation 171 177.
After the escape, Usopp informed Xia Chen that the Going Merry had been sunk during the battle with the Marines. Xia Chen promised retaliation, and Usopp recovered his resolve and boarded the Ark-Ark Maxim with him for the journey to Marine Headquarters 179.
At Marine Headquarters, Usopp and Nami enjoyed the opportunity to fight ordinary Marine soldiers after repeatedly encountering opponents far beyond their level. Their newly acquired Devil Fruits had already made those soldiers largely unable to threaten them. Usopp later remained with Nami, Chopper, and Brook, deliberately targeting weaker Marines and supporting one another. The group avoided significant injuries but became increasingly exhausted by the continuous fighting 185 192.
Six-Month Training and the Thousand Sunny
When the crew arranged a six-month training period, Xia Chen planned to take Usopp and several of the other fighters to an uninhabited island near Amazon Lily. Usopp discussed his changed fighting style with Xia Chen and decided to prioritize developing his White Tiger Fruit while retaining sniping as a supplementary skill 228.
His strength improved rapidly during this training. In a test against Zoro, he used a phantom white tiger, wind blades, and his newly developed Geng Metal White Tiger Cannon. Zoro destroyed the phantom and split the cannon’s energy wave with One Sword Style: Great Dragon Shock. Although briefly discouraged by the remaining gap, Usopp accepted his limitations and resolved to improve gradually. He then asked Rayleigh to thrash Zoro in their upcoming spar, prompting Rayleigh to advise that confidence was appropriate only when supported by sufficient strength 241.
By the later part of this period, Usopp could fully transform into a gigantic white tiger and use a human-beast form. These transformations did not eliminate the gap between him and stronger opponents: he suffered bleeding wounds in tiger form and was easily repelled when he attacked Xia Chen. He also fought Zoro after accusing him of forgetting the Going Merry now that the crew had a new ship; Xia Chen enclosed their quarrel in a barrier to prevent it from disturbing everyone else 266 269 271.
Aboard the new ship, Usopp hurried ahead of Luffy and Chopper to try Franky’s battle-suit machine. He selected a white suit and admired its comfort and temperature regulation, but his first attempt to use its jet boots sent him crashing into the cabin. At the end of the training period, he joined Luffy, Sanji, and Brook in attacking Zoro after interpreting Zoro’s farewell challenge to Rayleigh as ungrateful 280 291.
Xia Chen judged Usopp to have made the greatest increase in strength over the six months, while noting that he had also possessed the most room to improve. Usopp accompanied this genuine advancement with increasingly extravagant boasts 293.
Fish-Man Island and Dressrosa
When the Thousand Sunny passed through Fish-Man Island’s bubble and began to fall, Usopp controlled the surrounding air to support the ship and guide it safely down. Luffy and Chopper praised him, and he openly delighted in revealing that the feat was his rather than Xia Chen’s. During the fighting on the island, he transformed into a gigantic white tiger and used a roar whose sound waves blasted nearby Fish-Men off their feet 294 306.
Despite his improvement, his claim that even Zoro and Brook together were no match for him remained a boast. Brook had personally witnessed Zoro repeatedly thrashing Usopp during the training period, while Chopper enthusiastically believed Usopp’s account 326.
At Dressrosa, Usopp unsuccessfully hoped to draw a lot that would let him stay behind. Once ashore, he restrained Luffy’s loud reactions to avoid drawing public attention and questioned Luo closely about Sugar’s ability, the danger of being turned into a toy, and whether victims could be restored 342 343 344.
Before Luffy fought Doflamingo, Usopp stopped him from revealing that Violet had warned them about the arena’s rules. He explained that Doflamingo could order his subordinates to attack her even if the Straw Hats ultimately won. Luffy thanked him and called him reliable, prompting another boast about his supposed followers 347.
The Gran Tesoro and Battle with Bullet
Usopp spotted the enormous golden Gran Tesoro as the Thousand Sunny sailed through the New World. After Nami and Xia Chen explained its nature and owner, the crew approached, and Usopp marveled at the harbor’s luxury 363 364.
In a later confrontation involving a meteor, Usopp followed Nami’s unsuccessful lightning attack by transforming into a white tiger and gathering golden energy around a paw. He struck the meteor with Geng Metal Heaven-Shattering Strike, drawing Zoro’s acknowledgment that he had grown stronger again 380.
Usopp subsequently fought Bullet alongside Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. Their combined attacks left Bullet battered enough to acknowledge their strength before he deployed his Devil Fruit ability. Usopp used Armament Haki to defend against Bullet’s robot but was still sent flying. When Bullet released the spreading effects of his awakened ability, Usopp lifted all four Straw Hats into the air with wind 386 387.
Confronting Big Mom and Fighting on Onigashima
When Zoro and Sanji stayed behind to delay Big Mom while the others escaped, Usopp refused to abandon them. He rode the wind into the sky, transformed into a white tiger, and met her Ikoku with White Tiger: Heaven-Rending Claw. Big Mom recognized his power as Rocks’s former White Tiger Fruit. Although her attack overwhelmed him and knocked him away, his claw stripped away much of its force, and he emerged with little actual injury. He then prepared a strongest-attack retreat with Zoro and Sanji 451 452.
On the approach to Wano, Usopp lifted the Thousand Sunny into the air to bypass the dangerous seas. Nami protected the airborne ship from lightning, and Luffy praised both of them 463.
During the Onigashima fighting, Usopp used wind to carry Zoro to the rooftop, then took advantage of injuries Zoro had inflicted on the Headliners to reduce the pressure on himself. He eventually defeated the remaining opponents from the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates, but reverted from his hybrid form and collapsed in exhaustion, covered in wounds. He protested that his companions had watched instead of helping; Nami soothed him by claiming that they had trusted his strength 482 494.
Despite his exhaustion, Usopp subsequently lifted his companions with wind and carried them toward the rooftop when further action was required 495.
Elegia and Reunion with Yasopp
Usopp’s post-Wano bounty reached 1.02 billion Beli under the epithet “White Tiger.” Shortly afterward, he and Chopper excitedly announced Uta’s forthcoming concert on Elegia, helping prompt the crew’s decision to attend 511 512.
After Uta drew them into the Sing-Sing World, Xia Chen warned Usopp against relying excessively on his Devil Fruit and neglecting Haki. The experience undermined Usopp’s recent confidence in his billion-Beli bounty: he had believed himself to be an important powerful fighter, yet Uta had trapped him without his noticing 515.
On Elegia, Usopp reunited with Yasopp. His father recognized how much he had grown, and Usopp broke down in tears. Yasopp embraced him, apologized for leaving him and his mother, and assured him that crying did not invalidate his status as a brave warrior of the sea. Father and son held each other and cried while the others gave them space 526.
During the subsequent battles between the two crews, Usopp faced Yasopp directly. He shattered a Haki-coated bullet’s energy wave with a golden claw attack, protected himself from a second shot with a spherical wind barrier, and launched Ten Thousand Blades. Yasopp responded with pride in his son’s progress and prepared to fight with his full strength 532.
At their farewell, Yasopp acknowledged that Usopp’s strength had caught up with his own and that Usopp was far stronger than he had been at the same age. Usopp reassured him that he no longer blamed him for leaving and called him the person he had always striven to surpass. They parted with the expectation that their next meeting might occur when their crews competed for the title of Pirate King, and Usopp promised to be stronger than his father by then 535.
Later Travels and Continuing Limits
Usopp later challenged Vegito but suffered a crushing defeat. Although he had improved enormously, he recognized that defeating the Admiral-level fighter remained beyond him and continued to aspire to that degree of strength 544.
While traveling with Loki, Usopp and Chopper laughed at Xia Chen, who retaliated by mocking their bounties and immobilizing Chopper when he attacked. Seeing this, Usopp quickly abandoned any intention of confronting Xia Chen. He remained with the group as Loki led them toward the castle on the way to the Underworld 579.
Personality
Usopp combines extravagant boasting with visible fear. His invented eighty-million-man army collapses under Xia Chen’s counter-bluff, and he tries to avoid fighting Jango by claiming to suffer from a disease that will kill him if he fights anyone. He also enjoys recognition, whether through his self-appointed captaincy or his barely visible appearance on Luffy’s wanted poster 14 15 20 22 35.
His fear does not erase his loyalty. He stands against apparently overwhelming enemies to protect Syrup Village, remains committed after his young followers turn away from him, and cries with gratitude when the Straw Hats offer their help. His admiration for Yasopp is equally sincere: he celebrates his father’s adventurous spirit and reacts violently when Klahadore insults him 15 16 19.
Courage and Self-Improvement
Usopp’s ambition to become a brave warrior of the sea motivates genuine effort even before his fear subsides. He trains exceptionally hard during the crew’s early lessons, but initially struggles to translate that work into confidence. His later conduct against Oars and Big Mom demonstrates increasing willingness to fight for his companions rather than wait for someone stronger to protect him 61 146 451.
He retains a practical understanding of his shortcomings. He admits that he is not a professional shipwright, recognizes the physical gap between himself and Luffy or Zoro before eating the White Tiger Fruit, and recovers from his failed test against Zoro by accepting that strength must be built gradually 154 158 241.
His growing power can nevertheless make him overconfident. He exaggerates his standing relative to Zoro and Brook and briefly treats his billion-Beli bounty as proof that he belongs among the world’s powerful fighters. Being trapped in Uta’s world forces him to reconsider his dependence on Devil Fruit abilities 326 515.
Recognition and Emotional Attachment
Usopp enjoys being the center of attention and takes particular pleasure in praise from Luffy and Chopper. Nami can defuse his anger after the Onigashima battle simply by praising his strength and reliability 294 463 494.
His attachment to the Going Merry remains strong even after its loss. He is deeply upset by the suggestion that Zoro has forgotten the ship and immediately confronts him over it 179 271.
His feelings toward Yasopp develop from childhood resentment into admiration for his father’s pursuit of a dream. Although he sincerely respects that choice, their reunion reveals how strongly he still longs for paternal affection. Making Yasopp marvel at his strength is a longstanding personal goal, and their farewell combines pride, forgiveness, and open grief at separating again 524 526 532 535.
Abilities & Skills
Slingshot Use
- Carries a slingshot and aims it at the visiting pirates while defending Syrup Village 15.
- Claims that it is more powerful than a bullet, but the encounter does not demonstrate that claim 15.
- Uses Gunpowder Star to strike Gedatsu from outside his surrounding Swamp Cloud and set his clothing on fire 124.
- Uses Fire Star during the crew’s coordinated attack on Oars, igniting the giant zombie after his balance is disrupted 147.
- Chooses to retain his sniping skills after acquiring the White Tiger Fruit, intending to combine them with a fighting style centered on his Devil Fruit 228.
Drawing and Craftsmanship

- Builds a snowman substantially better than Luffy’s, receiving praise from Xia Chen 49.
- Makes a new weapon that he carries into the battle on Thriller Bark 146.
- Handles the Going Merry’s minor repairs, but explicitly recognizes that serious damage requires a professional shipwright 158.
Storytelling and Bluffing
- Tells Kaya stories daily following her parents’ deaths, helping sustain her spirits 16.
- Uses flags and an imaginary army to intimidate unfamiliar pirates 14.
- Entertains audiences with invented victories over Arlong and Laboon 33 50.
- His bluffing does not prevent him from believing Xia Chen’s intimidating claims about Roger and billion-Beli pirates 15.
- Continues exaggerating his strength after substantial real improvement, including claiming that Zoro and Brook together cannot defeat him. Chopper believes this despite Brook’s firsthand knowledge that Zoro repeatedly defeats Usopp in training 326.
- Responds to Luffy’s praise at Dressrosa by claiming to command eight thousand men 347.
Defensive Preparation and Observation
- Sources oil for the defense of Syrup Village and identifies the northern landing site as the likely attack route when the pirates fail to appear 19.
- Recognizes Kuro’s intention to threaten Kaya without being able to track his movements 22.
- Notices the painted scenery inside Laboon by observing that its clouds and birds do not move 44.
- Notices Brook’s missing shadow, prompting the explanation of his predicament 137.
- Recognizes the danger of exposing Violet as an informant and prevents Luffy from endangering her 347.
- Uses tactical caution when outmatched, including selecting weaker Marines to fight alongside Nami, Chopper, and Brook and targeting already-injured Headliners on Onigashima 192 482.
White Tiger Fruit
Usopp possesses the Mythical Zoan White Tiger Fruit, given to him by Xia Chen after Thriller Bark. Big Mom later identifies it as the fruit formerly used by Rocks. Its powers become the principal focus of Usopp’s fighting style, although he intends to preserve and supplement them with his sniping skills 154 228 451.
Transformations and Physical Enhancement
- Phantom white tiger: Early in his development, Usopp surrounds himself with white mist shaped like an illusory tiger. He uses this manifestation before he can achieve a complete White Tiger Form and later employs it to launch wind blades and energy attacks 177 241.
- White Tiger Form: Transforms into a gigantic white tiger with enormous paws and claws. By the later training period, he can use this form in combat, and at Fish-Man Island his roar produces sound waves that blast nearby enemies away 266 269 306.
- Human-beast form: Uses a hybrid transformation in fights against Zoro and the opposing forces on Onigashima 271 494.
- Defense and recovery: The fruit grants powerful defense and recovery, enabling him to endure a prolonged battle against numerous opponents on Onigashima. It does not prevent injuries or exhaustion 494.
- Durability against powerful attacks: After weakening Big Mom’s Ikoku, he survives being hurled away with little actual injury, though he experiences pain and physical strain 451.
Wind Control and Flight
Usopp can control the flow of air to generate wind, cutting attacks, defensive barriers, and aerial support. His control is strong enough to hold up the Thousand Sunny and move groups of people through the air 241 294 387 532.
- Supports and safely lands the Thousand Sunny inside Fish-Man Island 294.
- Carries himself through the air and runs across it in White Tiger Form 451.
- Lifts Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and himself away from Bullet’s spreading awakened ability 387.
- Raises the Thousand Sunny above the dangerous seas approaching Wano 463.
- Transports Zoro and later the rest of the group toward Onigashima’s rooftop, the latter despite severe exhaustion 482 495.
- Forms a spherical gale around himself that intercepts a Haki-coated shot from Yasopp 532.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Description | Demonstrated Limits / Result |
|---|---|---|
| Geng Metal White Tiger Cannon | The phantom white tiger mirrors Usopp’s deep inhalation and releases a powerful energy wave as he exhales 241. | Zoro acknowledges its power but splits it with One Sword Style: Great Dragon Shock 241. |
| Geng Metal Heaven-Shattering Strike | In White Tiger Form, Usopp gathers golden energy around an enormous paw and slams it into his target 380. | Used against a meteor; the provided account does not establish the strike’s final result 380. |
| White Tiger: Heaven-Rending Claw | A claw strike combining Haki with sharply cutting white airflow 451. | Removes much of the force of Big Mom’s Ikoku but fails to stop it completely, sending Usopp flying 451. |
| Ten Thousand Blades | Rotates the gale surrounding his body and releases countless enormous wind blades 532. | Used against Yasopp, who responds by firing repeatedly and preparing to fight at full strength 532. |
Haki and Combat Training
- Receives instruction aimed primarily at developing Observation Haki. Xia Chen also demonstrates four of the Six Powers, but the lessons alone do not establish that Usopp masters any of them 54.
- Grows stronger through repeated beatings and sparring, including training with Vivi and Mr. 9. He has not mastered Armament Haki by the end of the initial three-day period 55.
- Initially progresses more rapidly in Observation Haki than Armament Haki 76.
- Demonstrates Armament Haki by coating his arm before joining the others in attacking Zoro at their farewell to Rayleigh 291.
- Uses Armament Haki defensively against Bullet’s robot and combines Haki with a claw attack against Big Mom 386 451.
- Remains vulnerable to abilities his Haki cannot adequately resist. After Uta draws him into the Sing-Sing World, Xia Chen specifically warns him to improve his Haki rather than depend entirely on his fruit 515.
- Remains below the level needed to defeat Admiral-level Vegito, despite his substantial improvement 544.
Equipment
- Slingshot and specialized ammunition: Uses his slingshot with projectiles such as Gunpowder Star and Fire Star 15 124 147.
- White battle suit: Selects a white outfit from Franky’s battle-suit machine. It regulates its internal temperature and includes fuel-powered jet boots, though his first attempt at flight ends in a collision with the cabin 280.
- Telescope: Uses a telescope to examine the enormous bubbles at the Sabaody Archipelago 283.
Power Progression
| Stage / Advancement | Development | Limitations / Context | Chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial slingshot fighter | Carries a slingshot and shows the resolve to threaten apparently dangerous pirates in defense of his village. | His claim that the weapon exceeds a bullet’s power is unproven, and intimidation causes him to abandon the confrontation. | 15 |
| Beginning formal training | Receives Observation Haki instruction and demonstrations of Soru, Geppo, Rankyaku, and Kami-e. | Instruction does not establish mastery of these techniques. | 54 |
| Initial physical improvement | Becomes stronger after three days of combat training under Xia Chen, with additional sparring arranged for him and Nami. | Has not mastered Armament Haki; ingrained fear remains an obstacle. | 55 61 |
| Observation-oriented progress | Progresses faster in Observation Haki than Armament Haki. | No completed Observation Haki mastery is established by this assessment. | 76 |
| Demonstrated combat ammunition | Successfully ignites Gedatsu with Gunpowder Star and later sets Oars ablaze with Fire Star. | Relies on coordination and openings provided by his companions. | 124 147 |
| Mythical Zoan acquisition | Eats the White Tiger Fruit, becoming the crew’s fourth Mythical Zoan user. | Initially recognizes his ordinary physique as a major weakness compared with Luffy and Zoro. | 154 |
| Early fruit manifestation | Produces a white-mist phantom tiger and prepares a roar against Magellan’s Poison Cloud. | Cannot yet fully transform into a white tiger. | 177 |
| Fruit-enhanced battlefield strength | Defeats ordinary Marines with little danger from them. | Continuous fighting drains his stamina; he deliberately avoids stronger opponents. | 185 192 |
| Fruit-centered specialization | Decides to prioritize Devil Fruit development while retaining sniping as a complementary skill during the six-month training period. | Represents a change in fighting style rather than abandonment of marksmanship. | 228 |
| Geng Metal White Tiger Cannon | Develops a powerful energy-wave attack and experiences rapid increases in strength. | Zoro easily destroys his phantom tiger and splits the cannon, exposing the large remaining gap. | 241 |
| Full and hybrid transformations | Demonstrates gigantic White Tiger Form and human-beast form. | Can still be wounded in tiger form and remains easily overpowered by Xia Chen. | 266 269 271 |
| Confirmed Armament Haki and major overall growth | Explicitly coats his arm in Armament Haki; Xia Chen judges his increase in strength over six months to be the crew’s greatest. | His relative rate of improvement does not establish superiority over the crew’s strongest fighters. | 291 293 |
| Ship-scale wind control | Holds up the Thousand Sunny with controlled airflow and guides it safely down at Fish-Man Island. | This is a demonstrated fruit ability, not Xia Chen’s Flying Nimbus. | 294 |
