Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Established Gum-Gum Fruit abilities 2 3 Already capable of stretching his arm across dozens of meters and resisting an iron-club blow to the head when introduced.
Improved reactions against Silent Step 22 Initially struggles with Kuro’s speed, then gradually begins keeping up during their fight. Xia Chen ultimately knocks Kuro unconscious when his attacks become indiscriminate.
Begins systematic combat and Haki training 53 55 56 Requests instruction after Zoro’s slash makes him recognize his stagnation. Xia Chen trains him through repeated beatings and sensory exercises; he improves but does not immediately master Haki.
Increased strength and near-Soru speed 72 76 Displays markedly improved strength against Wapol. By the journey to Alabasta, Xia Chen considers him only one step away from mastering Armament Haki.
Soru and Armament Haki 88 89 Uses Soru against Crocodile and subsequently demonstrates a pitch-black Armament Haki-coated fist.
Observation Haki awakening 127 128 Uses Enel’s attacks to practice sensing and evasion, eventually dodging with his eyes closed and explicitly confirming that he has mastered Observation Haki.
Gear Second 131 Demonstrates a self-developed transformation that at least doubles his Soru speed and increases his punching force severalfold, though he still cannot hurt Xia Chen.
Initial Conqueror’s Haki awakening 150 Releases Conqueror’s Haki during the confrontation with Moria, but the burst lasts only an instant and he cannot immediately repeat it.
Gear Third and established use of all three Haki types 189 Defeats Lucci with an enormous Armament Haki-coated fist. By this point, he has mastered all three Haki types but has not yet developed Gear Fourth.
Further improvement during the Purple Rat battle 194 204 Sustains a prolonged fight despite severe injuries. Purple Rat acknowledges that Luffy has grown stronger again during their exchange.
Six months of consolidated training 225 266 268 269 Commits to becoming strong enough to protect the crew without relying on Xia Chen. Repeated sparring with Sanji and Rayleigh produces substantial gains.
Ranged Armament Haki application 282 Blasts the sea with Armament Haki strongly enough to launch the crew’s ship into the air.
Flowing Armament Haki and Hellfire Elephant Gun 335 Makes the Haki around his Gear Third fist flow, adds flames, and defeats Vergo with a blow that breaks his bamboo and sends him through a mountain.
Gear Fourth 353 354 Reveals the result of his six months of training against Doflamingo. His Haki-coated body retains its elasticity and repels Doflamingo’s threads.
Future Sight and Gear Fourth: Snakeman 453 457 Deliberately prolongs his fight with Katakuri to improve Observation Haki, learns to glimpse the immediate future, and then defeats him using Snakeman without revealing his full strength.
Conqueror’s Coating and Internal Destruction 483 484 Demonstrates Conqueror’s Haki-coated attacks against Kaido. His Armament Haki has also reached Internal Destruction, but the strengthened Kaido remains substantially stronger.
All three Haki types at the top level 490 Xia Chen assesses all three of Luffy’s Haki types as top-level and approaching king level during the Onigashima battle.
Nika Form awakening; Emperor-level combat strength 491 492 Awakens at eighteen after being knocked unconscious by Kaido. Gains a pure-white form, markedly greater strength and speed, and the ability to impart rubber-like properties to his surroundings and opponents.
Haki bottleneck below king level 522 Xia Chen explains that Luffy’s rapid advancement has left his foundations too shallow, slowing further improvement before king-level Haki.
Further Haki improvement against Shanks 529 530 534 Uses Nika Form in an inconclusive spar with Shanks. Shanks generally holds the advantage, but Luffy’s three Haki types improve further without a confirmed king-level breakthrough.
Improved Gear Fourth duration 525 586 Greater Haki and physical conditioning reduce the strain of brief transformations and allow him to sustain Gear Fourth substantially longer than before.

Appearance

Luffy is introduced as a boy wearing a straw hat, which later identifies him to others as “Straw Hat Boy” 2 40.

  • Straw hat: A gift from Shanks and Luffy’s most treasured possession 12.
  • Elastic body: His limbs can stretch far beyond their normal length, and his torso can expand into a large balloon 2 43.
  • Gear Second: His skin turns pink or red and his body emits steam 131 347.
  • Gear Third: Inflates an arm into an enormous limb for giant-sized punches 189 335.
  • Gear Fourth: Enlarges his body and combines its elasticity with Haki. Snakeman produces red markings and a large cloud of steam 353 354 457.
  • Nika Form: His hair and clothing turn pure white, white vapor coils around him, and his movements become exceptionally free and exaggerated. He laughs frequently while transformed 491 529.
  • Nika exhaustion: When the transformation runs out during his fight with Kaido, he briefly appears aged and drained 496.

Personality

Luffy is exuberant, direct, and quick to welcome people he finds impressive. He invites Xia Chen to join immediately after seeing his strength, accepts his request to become first mate, and persistently recruits Zoro and Nami. His plans for the crew include a musician because he considers music essential to a banquet 2 4 10.

Food—especially meat—regularly determines his priorities. He wakes asking whether it is time to eat, envies Xia Chen’s storage ability because it could carry enormous quantities of meat, and abandons further play in Orange Town when warned that supplies are running low. He is equally enthusiastic about unusual experiences, including flying on a giant bird and riding a dancing lion 4 8 9 14.

His straightforwardness also makes him gullible and careless. He believes Xia Chen’s claim to be Roger’s nephew, readily accepts flattery, and stops fleeing Loguetown merely because Buggy calls after him. However, he can acknowledge serious mistakes: after being confronted about his plan to remove the Going Merry’s mainmast, he thanks Xia Chen and promises to treat the ship as a crewmate 15 40 43 47.

Luffy’s ambition does not outweigh his generosity or loyalty. He leaves treasure for Orange Town’s repairs, refuses to tolerate insults against Shanks, and insists on finding the One Piece himself rather than hearing its secret from Crocus 13 14 45.

Growing Responsibility and Independence

Luffy becomes increasingly conscious of his responsibility to remain strong enough to protect his companions. Zoro’s improvement motivates him to seek Xia Chen’s training, and he refuses to fall behind the others in their Haki exercises. After the crew’s imprisonment and the Paramount War, he recognizes how completely they have relied on Xia Chen and commits to becoming stronger in case Xia Chen is ever absent 53 56 225.

His confidence is accompanied by greater tactical awareness. Against Enel and Katakuri, he deliberately uses opponents as training partners rather than immediately seeking the quickest victory. He also recognizes that an opponent beyond even Xia Chen’s assured ability to defeat should be left to Xia Chen rather than challenged recklessly himself 127 128 360 453 457.

Influence of Xia Chen

Luffy develops a sharper tongue, greater fondness for boasting, and a habit of offering transparent excuses for his adventures. Zoro and Sanji attribute these changes to his time with Xia Chen. His taunts increasingly irritate enemies such as Doflamingo and Bullet, while Luffy himself credits Xia Chen with helping him become less easily deceived 134 140 350 358 384 507.

This growth does not eliminate his impulsiveness or susceptibility to familiar tricks. He launches the ship toward Sabaody without checking its direction, repeatedly runs into Uta’s musical-note obstacles, and mistakenly rejects Vegapunk’s satellite Astra because she is not the old man he expects 282 516 538.

Freedom, Family, and Resilience

Luffy associates piracy with freedom rather than indiscriminate violence. He rejects Uta’s claim that all pirates are vicious criminals and later explains to Emeth that the Pirate King is the freest person in the world 516 550.

His reaction to Dragon’s death is restrained because he has never met his father and has no memories of him. Nevertheless, his first response to the apparent news of Dragon’s capture is to propose rescuing him. When Sabo reveals that he killed Dragon while controlled, Luffy refuses to blame him and instead directs his anger toward the person responsible 338 359.

His fighting spirit persists even when badly injured. Against Purple Rat, he maintains his determination despite being in worse physical condition; against Kaido, he repeatedly recovers and resumes attacking, attributing his endurance to grit 204 482.

Abilities & Skills

Gum-Gum Fruit

The fruit originally known as the Gum-Gum Fruit gives Luffy a rubber body that he uses for attacks, movement, and protection. Its true identity is later established as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika 12 42 43 534.

  • Stretching: Extends his arms to strike distant opponents or gather companions while moving 2 42.
  • Blunt-impact resistance: Takes Alvida’s iron club directly to the head without apparent injury; ordinary blows also fail to hurt him during an early dispute with Xia Chen 3 8.
  • Inflation: Expands his body into a balloon to cushion the Going Merry against a gate frame, redirecting it onto the correct course 43.
  • Elastic movement: Uses his stretched body to launch himself—and inadvertently several companions—over an estate wall 16.
  • Lightning immunity: Enel’s lightning is ineffective against his rubber body, allowing Luffy to fight him directly and practice Observation Haki 127 128.
  • Limit: His rubber body does not prevent Xia Chen’s Armament Haki-coated punches from hurting him 9 33.
  • Slashing vulnerability: Enel’s trident can puncture him, and sword attacks remain a weakness even after his Nika awakening 127 128 530.

Gears and Nika Form

Form Properties and applications
Gear Second Uses pumping motions to activate a steaming, pink-skinned state. At its introduction, it makes his Soru at least twice as fast and increases his striking force severalfold 131.
Gear Third Inflates a limb to enormous size. Luffy combines it with Armament Haki for Giant Elephant Gun and with flowing Haki and flames for Hellfire Elephant Gun 189 335.
Gear Fourth / Boundman Combines an enlarged elastic body with Armament Haki, powerful compressed punches, and aerial propulsion. His rubber properties remain effective despite the Haki coating. Boundman is explicitly used against Loki 353 354 516 586.
Gear Fourth: Snakeman An enlarged form with red markings and abundant steam, used to finish his battle with Katakuri after mastering a measure of Future Sight 457.
Nika Form His awakened, pure-white transformation. Grants Emperor-level combat strength, extraordinary bodily freedom, and rubber-like manipulation of surrounding terrain and struck opponents 491 492 530.

Nika Form is accompanied by a drum-like heartbeat, powerful Conqueror’s Haki, and an overwhelming feeling of happiness. Luffy initially does not understand the transformation, but later learns to summon it deliberately by focusing inward on the sound of the drums 491 492 529.

  • Environmental rubberization: Turns the ground springy, raises it into a protective wall, and uses it to launch himself or attack an opponent from below. He can affect even Xia Chen’s exceptionally hard artificial rock 492 530.
  • Deformation of opponents: A punch stretches Kaido’s head like modeling clay before launching him across Onigashima 492.
  • Extreme bodily malleability: Flattens himself to avoid Shanks’s sword wave and adheres to Loki’s hammer after being struck, then stretches himself upright atop it 530 588.
  • Gigantic enlargement: Inflates himself until he is more than twice as tall as Dorry and Brogy, allowing him to handle the Sunstone and draw rainbows in the air 575.
  • Stamina cost: Nika Form can expire and leave him visibly aged and exhausted. Kaido warns that it consumes both stamina and life force; Luffy nevertheless forces himself to transform again 496.
  • Gear Fourth recovery limits: Earlier overuse leaves him exhausted and powerless. Later, short uses are far less taxing, and ending the form before his Haki is depleted prevents complete exhaustion 484 525.

Named Attacks

Technique Application
Gum-Gum Pistol A stretching punch that sends Alvida flying into the sea. Another use knocks down several advancing Black Cat Pirates. He later performs it with an Armament Haki-coated fist against Crocodile 3 21 89.
Bazooka Stretches both arms backward before driving both palms into the opponent. Luffy uses it to send Buggy flying 14.
Gum-Gum Rifle Stretches and twists his arm like a rope before releasing a powerful punch. The blow caves in Enel’s chest and shatters its bones 128.
Gum-Gum Jet Bazooka A Gear Second-enhanced two-handed strike, demonstrated against Xia Chen without overcoming his defenses 131.
Giant Elephant Gun An enormous Gear Third punch coated in Armament Haki, used to defeat Lucci 189.
Hellfire Elephant Gun Combines Gear Third, flowing Armament Haki, and flames. Breaks Vergo’s bamboo and blasts him through a mountain 335.
Gum-Gum Jet Pistol A high-speed Gear Second punch used against Doflamingo 347.
Gum-Gum Jet Whip A Gear Second attack that Doflamingo counters with Athlete during their opening exchange 347.
Gum-Gum Balloon Also used to expel air downward and gain height while evading Doflamingo’s awakened strings 351.
King Kong Gun A massive Gear Fourth punch used against Bullet, Kaido, Shanks, and Loki. Against Kaido, Luffy also coats the attack in Conqueror’s Haki 387 482 483 529 586.
Gum-Gum Gatling In Nika Form, rains punches into the ground, causing it to bulge upward toward Kaido 493.

Haki

Type Development and demonstrated uses
Armament Haki Trains under Xia Chen and first demonstrates black hardening during the Crocodile confrontation. Later learns flowing Haki, uses an outward blast to propel the ship, and reaches Internal Destruction 55 89 282 335 484.
Observation Haki Awakens while dodging Enel’s attacks. Advances to brief Future Sight during the Katakuri battle, though Shanks’s Observation Haki remains superior during their later spar 127 128 457 530.
Conqueror’s Haki First releases an uncontrolled, momentary burst against Moria. Later uses it deliberately in clashes with Doflamingo and Bullet, combines its pressure with Zoro’s, and demonstrates Conqueror’s Coating against Kaido 150 347 384 474 483.

Xia Chen initially assesses all three of Luffy’s Haki types as top-level and close to king level during the Onigashima battle. Later, he explains that Luffy’s unusually rapid growth has produced shallow foundations and a bottleneck before king-level Haki. Further improvement occurs during the Shanks spar, but no king-level breakthrough is confirmed in the supplied developments 490 522 534.

Combat Adaptation

Luffy improves while fighting opponents whose abilities initially overwhelm him. Against Kuro, he gradually adjusts to Silent Step rather than remaining unable to follow its movements 22.

  • Early Haki limitations: He repeatedly asks Xia Chen to teach him Conqueror’s Haki. At that stage, Xia Chen believes his strength and spirit are insufficient to awaken it and that he is not yet ready to train in any of the three Haki types. Luffy later begins formal training and eventually learns all three 21 24 53 55 189.
  • Strength gap: His attacks have no effect on Xia Chen during their confrontation at Twin Cape. Even after developing Gear Second, he cannot overcome Xia Chen’s unassisted physical defenses 47 131.
  • Soru: Progresses from near-Soru speed against Wapol to explicitly using the movement technique against Crocodile; Gear Second further accelerates it 72 88 89 131.
  • Growth under pressure: Purple Rat recognizes that he has improved again during their prolonged fight 204.
  • Selective training opponents: Chooses to develop Future Sight against Katakuri because the latter provides useful pressure, whereas Xia Chen’s overwhelming superiority makes their spars too one-sided for the same purpose 453.
  • Emperor-level endurance: Withstands Kaido’s Thunder Bagua without immediately losing consciousness and resumes fighting after being struck by Bolo Breath 482.
  • Remaining upper limits: Even after awakening, he struggles against the strengthened Kaido and is placed in grave difficulty when Shen Monkey, You Rooster, and Xu Dog attack together 492 496 506.

Equipment & Possessions

  • Straw hat: Given to him by Shanks. Buggy punctures it during their battle, and Nami agrees to mend it afterward 12 13 14.
  • Going Merry: The crew’s sailing ship, given by Kaya after Kuro’s plot is stopped. Luffy explicitly recognizes it as a crewmate after Xia Chen challenges his careless treatment of it 22 47.
  • Wanted poster: His first shown poster carries a bounty of 25 million Beli; the back of Usopp’s head also appears in the picture 35.
  • Ark Maxim: Leaves the Moby Dick aboard this vessel with the crew after the Paramount War 221.
  • Thousand Sunny: The crew’s later ship, used for their departure from Fish-Man Island and subsequent travels 315 516 537.
  • Sunstone: Temporarily handles it on Elbaf after enlarging himself in Nika Form, using it to draw rainbows rather than establishing it as a permanent personal possession 575.

Relationships

  • Xia Chen — First mate and first recruit shown. Luffy admires his strength and wants to learn his techniques. Their friendship includes frequent arguments and food disputes, but Luffy trusts him to handle Arlong and accepts his correction over the Merry. Xia Chen later becomes his principal combat and Haki instructor and rescues the imprisoned crew. Luffy seeks independence from his protection while continuing to regard his strength as effectively insurmountable; Xia Chen assures Garp that he will protect Luffy because Luffy is his captain 2 9 21 30 33 47 53 55 225 528 534.
  • Zoro — Recruited at Shells Town after Luffy sets out to recover his confiscated swords. Zoro defends Luffy’s treasured hat from Buggy’s knives; Luffy attempts to intervene after Mihawk defeats him, but Xia Chen stops him. Their later fight exposes Luffy’s need to improve, but they reconcile after Xia Chen intervenes. Eventually, they combine their Conqueror’s Haki against Bullet and the Beasts Pirates 4 6 12 26 53 384 474.
  • Nami — Navigator whom Luffy repeatedly invites to join. He later sets out to bring her back and offers to help defeat Arlong and free Cocoyasi Village. She continues to discipline his reckless behavior, including knocking him unconscious with a Conqueror’s Coating punch after he launches the ship in the wrong direction 10 28 30 282.
  • Usopp — Initially bonds with Luffy through Yasopp, whom Luffy knows from Shanks’s ship. Luffy treats Usopp as a crewmate before he formally boards the Going Merry. In Dressrosa, Usopp prevents him from exposing Violet as their informant, earning Luffy’s praise for his reliability 15 22 347.
  • Sanji — Joins as the crew’s cook, to Luffy’s delight, before they depart for Cocoyasi Village. Later stops Luffy from recklessly returning to rescue Xia Chen and Ace from Aokiji. He also serves as a recurring sparring partner and recognizes Luffy’s rapid improvement 29 83 266.
  • Koby — Protected by Luffy from Alvida. At Shells Town, Luffy provokes a fight that convinces the Marines they are not companions, allowing Koby to pursue enlistment. Their relationship later deteriorates at Marineford: Koby becomes disillusioned with Luffy and privately hopes Purple Rat will defeat him, partly from jealousy of his strength. Xia Chen overhears these feelings and later kills Koby 3 8 193 194 528.
  • Shanks — A pirate Luffy deeply respects and the giver of his straw hat. Luffy angrily retaliates when Buggy damages the hat and insults him; Shanks is delighted to see Luffy’s wanted poster. Their eventual reunion is tearful before Luffy’s demand to be addressed as “Lord Luffy” provokes a comic brawl. They later fight an inconclusive spar in which Shanks generally holds the advantage, then part as rivals pursuing the One Piece 12 13 36 525 529 530 534.
  • Laboon — Opponent and promise partner. They agree to resume their unfinished battle after Luffy sails around the Grand Line. Luffy tells Crocus that he will keep this promise unless he dies 47.
  • Dragon — Father. Dragon trusts Luffy’s judgment in choosing companions, which helps persuade him to trust Xia Chen. Despite their blood relationship, Luffy has never met him. After Dragon’s death, Luffy acknowledges limited personal grief but still wishes to strike the person responsible 39 167 338 359.
  • Garp — Grandfather and a major presence in Luffy’s childhood. Luffy assumes Xia Chen will hold back when the two fight at Marineford. After losing Dragon, Ace, and Sabo, Garp asks Xia Chen to protect his remaining grandson 195 338 528.
  • Ace — Sworn older brother and friendly rival. They reunite over a meal in Alabasta, where Ace wins another eating contest, and later exchange boasts after the Paramount War. The World Government subsequently kills Ace, according to the news Garp brings Xia Chen 79 168 221 528.
  • Sabo — Sworn older brother whom Luffy long believes dead. They reunite in Dressrosa after Sabo has been forced to kill Dragon and the Revolutionary Army under external control. Luffy absolves him of blame and urges him to survive so the three brothers can meet again. Sabo is later reported killed by the World Government 168 359 362 528.
  • Jinbe — Becomes close to Luffy through their connection with Ace. Welcomes him to Fish-Man Island and accepts Luffy’s invitation to join the crew, initially remaining behind to help the island recover. He is subsequently listed among the crew’s members 295 315 511.
  • Brook — Luffy declares that their friendship obliges the crew to help retrieve Brook’s shadow, although the others recognize that he also wants to explore the island 140.
  • Rayleigh — Training partner whom Luffy addresses as “Uncle Rayleigh.” Repeatedly spars with him during the crew’s extended training period 266.
  • Luo — Luffy helps save him from Vergo simply because he likes his appearance. Luo thanks him and recognizes that he owes the Straw Hats his life twice over 335.
  • Katakuri — Opponent deliberately chosen as a suitable partner for developing Future Sight. After his defeat, Katakuri acknowledges both Luffy’s victory and the fact that Luffy did not reveal his full strength 453 457.
  • Uta — Childhood acquaintance and competitive friend. Luffy congratulates her on becoming a famous singer and invites her to meet Xia Chen. Their reunion includes a race in which she repeatedly tricks him; he later holds back substantially while fighting her in the Sing-Sing World 516 519.
  • Vegapunk — Scientist whom Luffy admires. Luffy initially mistakes Astra for an impostor, then meets the elderly Vegapunk and becomes excited by his inventions, especially the food-producing machine 538 540.
  • Emeth — Ancient robot who detects an aura like Joy Boy’s in Luffy. Their conversation reveals a shared association between freedom and Luffy’s ambition to become Pirate King 550.
  • Dorry and Brogy — Giant acquaintances who welcome Luffy on Elbaf and marvel at his rise to Emperor status. His Nika transformation prompts them to explain the giants’ legends about Nika and Joy Boy 568 575.
  • Loki — Powerful giant opponent on Elbaf. Both eagerly recognize the other as a worthy fighter, and Loki addresses Luffy as Nika during their battle 586 588.
  • Buggy and Alvida — Defeated enemies who later agree to pursue Luffy as their common target 3 14 36.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Forming the Crew

Luffy meets Xia Chen near Foosha Village while fighting a tiger and recruits him as first mate. They depart the following day, survive a tornado inside separate barrels, and are hauled aboard Alvida’s ship. Luffy defeats Alvida while protecting Koby, then escapes the approaching Marines with Koby and Xia Chen 2 3 4.

At Shells Town, Luffy persuades Zoro to join while Xia Chen defeats Morgan. Before leaving, Luffy helps separate Koby publicly from the pirates so that he can remain behind and become a Marine 4 6 8.

Orange Town and Syrup Village

In Orange Town, Luffy seeks to recruit Nami and fights Buggy. The battle becomes personal when Buggy attacks his straw hat and insults Shanks. Luffy finishes him with Bazooka and leaves some treasure behind to help the islanders rebuild 10 12 13 14.

At Syrup Village, Luffy befriends Usopp and helps oppose the Black Cat Pirates. He battles Kuro and begins adapting to his speed, though Xia Chen delivers the final knockout. Kaya gives the crew the Going Merry, and Luffy calls Usopp aboard as an already accepted companion 15 21 22.

Baratie and Cocoyasi Village

Luffy fights Don Krieg during the Baratie conflict and is later found asleep near the collapsed pirate. After learning where Nami has gone, he resolves to retrieve her; Sanji joins the crew before their departure 28 29.

At Cocoyasi Village, Luffy agrees to leave Xia Chen alone when his unstable transformation produces overwhelming killing intent. He then reunites with Nami and offers to fight Arlong, only to learn that Xia Chen has already gone ahead. Following Arlong’s death and Nami’s liberation, Luffy joins the village celebrations 30 33.

Loguetown and Entry into the Grand Line

Luffy receives his 25-million-Beli bounty and visits Loguetown to see the Pirate King’s execution platform. During the escape, Xia Chen kicks him out of town after he stops at Buggy’s call; Luffy stretches out his arms to collect Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp along the way, carrying them back to the ship 35 37 38 40 42.

At the Red Line, he cushions the Merry against a gate frame so it can continue safely up the canal. At Twin Cape, he refuses Crocus’s offer to reveal the One Piece’s secret, accepts responsibility for caring for the Merry, and makes his promise to Laboon. The crew subsequently reaches Whiskey Peak, where Luffy eagerly accepts Igaram’s offer of a welcoming party 43 45 47 50.

Whiskey Peak Training and Drum Island

A fight with Zoro makes Luffy realize that his swordsman has advanced while he has stagnated. Xia Chen stops their clash, helps them reconcile, and agrees to teach Luffy. The crew delays its departure for several days while Xia Chen subjects the fighters to intensive training, followed by continued Observation Haki exercises at sea 53 55 56.

On Drum Island, Luffy takes on Wapol while Chopper, Dalton, and Sanji handle the other opponents. Xia Chen observes that his strength has risen substantially and that his movement is approaching Soru 72.

Alabasta

Luffy reunites with Ace in a restaurant, loses another eating contest to him, and introduces him to the crew. During the subsequent danger posed by Aokiji, Luffy wants to return for Xia Chen and Ace, but Sanji forces him to recognize that doing so would waste their efforts to let the others escape 79 80 83.

After crossing the desert, the crew reaches Rainbase. Luffy provokes a chase by openly calling Crocodile a villain in a town that regards him as a hero. At Rain Dinners, his impulsive attack fails against Crocodile’s intangible body, and Crocodile nearly kills him through dehydration. Water restores him, and in the following confrontation he demonstrates Armament Haki and Soru 86 87 88 89.

Following the Alabasta events, Luffy receives another wanted poster along with the rest of the crew 98.

Skypiea and New Techniques

After the Merry nearly collides with the Shandia, Luffy apologizes, but Wyper rejects the apology and attacks again. Learning that the crew seeks Upper Yard’s gold escalates the dispute into a battle involving Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji before Xia Chen ends the remaining resistance 120.

Luffy later intervenes to stop Enel from killing the injured Zoro. His immunity to lightning gives him the opportunity to practice Observation Haki against Enel’s Mantra and trident attacks. After awakening his own Observation Haki, he defeats Enel with Gum-Gum Rifle 127 128.

In a subsequent spar with Xia Chen, Luffy unveils Gear Second. Its increases in speed and striking power are substantial, but Xia Chen still takes his strongest attack without moving and knocks him away 131.

Thriller Bark

Luffy supports exploring the island and helping Brook recover his shadow. When Moria arrives asking after Absalom, Luffy bluntly states that Xia Chen killed him, undermining Nami’s attempted deception and provoking Moria’s hostility 140 144.

During the conflict, Luffy first releases Conqueror’s Haki. The awakening is brief and uncontrolled, and Moria’s stronger combat form still overwhelms his Gear Second and Armament Haki-enhanced attack 150.

Capture, Impel Down, and the Paramount War

Following the government’s operation against Xia Chen, the authorities deploy six Navy Vice Admirals to capture Luffy and the others. Dragon later tells the recovering Xia Chen that the crew has been imprisoned in Impel Down. Xia Chen subsequently rescues them 167 225.

At Marineford, Luffy fights toward the execution platform and defeats Lucci with a Gear Third, Armament Haki-coated Giant Elephant Gun. He then battles CP0 agent Purple Rat, continuing without Xia Chen’s assistance when his first mate arrives. Koby’s interference and disillusionment expose the collapse of their earlier rapport 189 193 194.

Luffy continues fighting despite severe injuries, improving enough that Purple Rat remarks on his growth. After the war, he says goodbye to Ace aboard the Moby Dick, and the crew departs on the Ark Maxim 204 221.

Extended Training and the Journey to Fish-Man Island

Recognizing that Xia Chen has repeatedly had to rescue and protect them, Luffy agrees to delay further adventures and strengthen the crew. Over six months, he trains extensively and spars with Sanji and Rayleigh 225 266 268 269.

On the later voyage toward Sabaody, impatience leads him to imitate Xia Chen’s method of propelling a ship with Armament Haki. He succeeds in launching it into the air but sends it in the wrong direction, earning Nami’s retaliation 282.

At Fish-Man Island, Luffy reunites with Jinbe and becomes friendly with Shirahoshi. He persuades Jinbe to join the crew, though Jinbe remains behind temporarily to help the island recover. The Thousand Sunny then departs for the New World 295 315.

Punk Hazard and Dressrosa

On Punk Hazard, Luffy intervenes against Vergo to help Luo. After initially trading blows, he uses Gear Second and then a Gear Third punch enhanced by flowing Armament Haki and flames. Hellfire Elephant Gun defeats Vergo, and Luffy accepts Luo’s thanks while explaining that he simply likes him 327 335.

The crew learns that Dragon and the Revolutionary Army on Baltigo have been killed. Luffy initially assumes his father has been captured and proposes another rescue, then explains his muted grief by acknowledging that he has never met Dragon 338.

In Dressrosa, Luffy challenges Doflamingo and clashes with his Conqueror’s Haki. He gains the upper hand in their initial exchanges, faces Doflamingo’s awakened strings, and reveals Gear Fourth. Afterward, he reports Doflamingo’s defeat to Xia Chen 346 347 350 351 353 354 358.

Luffy also reunites with Sabo and learns that he was controlled into killing Dragon and the Revolutionary Army. Rather than blame his brother, Luffy comforts him and resolves to strike the true culprit. Xia Chen identifies the enemy as the World Government’s hidden ruler, and Luffy recognizes that such an opponent must be left to Xia Chen. He parts from Sabo with the hope that all three brothers will reunite 359 360 362.

Pirate Expo and Bullet

When Bullet demands to see Xia Chen, Luffy refuses and counters his Conqueror’s Haki. Zoro joins him in the Haki clash, and the two attack together before Sanji and Usopp enter the fight 384.

Bullet’s enormous transformed construct proves far beyond Luffy’s initial expectations. His Gear Fourth King Kong Gun is repelled, and Bullet sends him flying with a bloody counterattack 387.

Totto Land and Emperor Recognition

During his battle with Katakuri, Luffy discovers that his Armament Haki is superior but that Katakuri’s Future Sight prevents him from landing effective attacks. Rather than immediately using Gear Fourth, he prolongs the fight to force an Observation Haki breakthrough 453.

Luffy succeeds in seeing a short distance into the future, then transforms into Gear Fourth: Snakeman and defeats Katakuri. Katakuri acknowledges that Luffy achieved his training objective without showing his full strength. Luffy’s subsequent wanted poster raises his bounty to 1.5 billion Beli and accompanies his recognition as an Emperor 457 459.

Wano and the Nika Awakening

Luffy and Zoro combine their Conqueror’s Haki to pressure the Beasts Pirates. Luffy later reaches the rooftop and challenges Kaido, repeatedly recovering from powerful attacks rather than being defeated by a single Thunder Bagua 474 477 482.

His Conqueror’s Coating and Internal Destruction allow him to threaten Kaido, but the latter’s own strengthened Haki leaves a substantial gap between them. After enduring further punishment and being knocked unconscious, Luffy’s heartbeat takes on the sound of war drums and he awakens Nika Form at eighteen 483 484 489 490 491.

The transformation raises him to Emperor-level combat strength. He sends Kaido across Onigashima with a rubberizing punch and alters the ground into a trampoline, prompting Kaido to acknowledge his Emperor title. However, the battle continues, and exhaustion briefly ends Luffy’s transformation before he activates it again 492 493 496.

World Government agents then interrupt the fighting. Luffy battles Shen Monkey and eventually faces Shen Monkey, You Rooster, and Xu Dog together, leaving him in severe difficulty before Xia Chen intervenes. After the conflict, his bounty rises to 4.56 billion Beli 496 506 507 511.

Elegia, Uta, and the Reunion with Shanks

Luffy reunites with Uta, congratulates her on her singing career, and races her to the Thousand Sunny. Although Gear Fourth lets him overtake her, she repeatedly blocks him with musical notes. In the Sing-Sing World, he fights her while holding back greatly and challenges her sweeping condemnation of pirates 516 519.

After Xia Chen rescues Uta, Luffy returns to the Sunny and tearfully embraces Shanks. His subsequent demand that Shanks call him “Lord Luffy” turns the reunion into a comic wrestling match 525.

Xia Chen provides a durable artificial island for a more serious spar. Luffy uses Nika Form and environmental rubberization against Shanks, whose superior Haki and swordsmanship generally give him the advantage. They stop without deciding a winner and later part as rivals seeking the One Piece 527 529 530 534.

During this period, Garp brings Xia Chen news that Ace and Sabo have been killed by the World Government and asks him to protect Luffy. Xia Chen states that he would do so regardless because Luffy is his captain 528.

Egghead Island

Luffy eagerly explores Egghead’s futuristic architecture. He dodges Astra’s laser but refuses to believe that she is Vegapunk because Xia Chen described the scientist as an old man. He later meets the elderly Vegapunk and becomes enthusiastic about his inventions 537 538 540.

The ancient robot Emeth detects an aura similar to Joy Boy’s in Luffy. Their conversation leads Luffy to explain his understanding of the Pirate King as the freest person in the world. He subsequently fights the evolved Vegito, whose speed and Observation Haki Killer create a new challenge 550 553.

Elbaf and Loki

On Elbaf, Dorry and Brogy marvel at Luffy’s growth from an inexperienced pirate into one of the sea’s Emperors. His delight in the island’s unusual sights remains unchanged 568 569.

When Luffy transforms into Nika Form and enlarges himself to use the Sunstone, the giants explain their traditions about Nika. Their lore describes Nika as both liberator and potential destroyer, records two earlier appearances associated with the world’s destruction, and identifies the second Nika as Joy Boy 575.

Luffy later rushes out to challenge Loki, recognizing his immense size and powerful aura as signs of a worthy opponent. He begins in Gear Fourth: Boundman and meets Loki’s hammer with King Kong Gun. After entering Nika Form, he absorbs a hammer strike through extreme bodily deformation and stretches himself upright on the weapon, surprising Loki. The battle remains ongoing 586 588.
