Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Increased strength; approaching the Realm of Cutting Iron | 37 | Daily challenges against Xia Chen produce a confirmed improvement in strength. Zoro describes the realm as close but says he still lacks the final insight; he has not yet attained it at this stage. Xia Chen credits their sparring with bringing him to this threshold earlier than in the original story. |
| Realm of Cutting Iron attained; true swordmaster | 53 | Xia Chen confirms that Zoro has comprehended the realm. His slash during his fight with Luffy threatens serious or fatal injury before Xia Chen intercepts it with Armament Haki. Xia Chen notes that Zoro has reached this realm considerably earlier than in the original story. |
| Formal instruction in advanced combat | 54 | Xia Chen identifies Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji as physically qualified to attempt Soru and explains Armament Haki, including its application to swords. This is instruction, not confirmation that Zoro has already mastered either ability. |
| Further improvement after Cutting Iron | 90 | Defeats Mr. 1 with a single decisive slash. The narration attributes the ease of his victory to his earlier attainment of Cutting Iron and continued training. |
| Armament Haki acquired | 100 | Announces that he has just mastered Armament Haki and immediately tests it against Xia Chen. His Haki-enhanced sword still cannot penetrate Xia Chen’s defenses. |
| Observation Haki awakened | 126 | Awakens the ability under pressure against Enel, recalling Xia Chen’s instruction about sensing living beings. Uses it to anticipate lightning attacks and creates an opening to wound Enel. |
| Black Rope Dragon Twister developed | 145 | Introduces a newly developed sword-energy tornado that sweeps up numerous zombie generals and Perona. Combining it with Nami’s lightning substantially increases its power. |
| Demon Aura: Nine-Sword Style demonstrated | 192 | Uses his ultimate form against Vice Admiral Mole, appearing to have three heads and six arms. The exact point at which he developed it is not established. |
| Mid-battle growth; improved Great Thousand Worlds | 203 | Progresses from barely defending against Mole to nearly matching him during their prolonged duel. Coats all three blades in Armament Haki and defeats Mole with an improved technique described as his strongest move at the time. |
| Six months of intensive training and swordsmanship instruction | 241 265 266 291 326 | Studies swordsmanship and spars with Rayleigh, significantly improving his strength. Regularly fights his crewmates during the training period and demonstrates enough physical strength to repel Usopp’s enormous white-tiger paw. |
| Conqueror’s Haki demonstrated | 384 | Releases Conqueror’s Haki alongside Luffy. Their combined pressure holds evenly against Bullet’s Conqueror’s Haki; this does not establish that Zoro alone matches Bullet. |
| Nine-Sword Style penetrates King’s flame-backed defense | 477 478 | Uses Asura: Sword Draw: Dead Man’s Game to wound King despite his active defensive flame, while also identifying the relationship between King’s flame, defense, and speed. |
| Solidified Demon Aura: Nine-Sword Style | 478 480 | Makes the formerly illusory additional heads, arms, and swords solid. King can no longer distinguish a single real body, and Zoro can chain Nine-Sword Style attacks seamlessly. |
| Near parity with Benn Beckman | 531 532 534 | Shatters Beckman’s Haki-coated bullet and wounds him with Dead Man’s Game. Their completed fight is described as practically a draw, although Beckman is acknowledged to be slightly stronger. |
Appearance
- Black bandanna: Worn when Luffy and Xia Chen first find him tied up at the Marine base 4.
- Chest wound: Mihawk leaves an enormous wound across his chest during their duel; Zoro is still discussing his recovery at the Cocoyasi Village banquet 26 33.
- Battle preparation: Later keeps his bandanna tied around his arm and moves it to his head when preparing to fight seriously 469 472 531.
- Additional chest injury: Receives a shallow cross-shaped wound from Kin’emon during their first duel; despite its alarming appearance, it is less than a centimeter deep 326.
- Asura appearance: Demon Aura: Nine-Sword Style initially surrounds him with additional illusory heads, arms, and swords. During his fight with King, he solidifies this into a three-headed, six-armed form wielding nine swords 192 477 478.
Personality
Zoro’s ambition is inseparable from his pride as a swordsman. He calls Cabaji a stepping stone toward becoming the world’s strongest, refuses to retreat even with Mihawk’s knife in his chest, and deliberately faces the final slash rather than expose his back 13 25 26.
He is more skeptical and observant than Luffy. He notices the dark gleam that allows Xia Chen to hurt their rubber-bodied captain, challenges Xia Chen’s claim of being Roger’s nephew, and connects the butler’s earlier collapse to Xia Chen’s later display of overwhelming aura 9 15 17 21.
His temper makes him an easy target for teasing. Xia Chen’s insults frequently provoke threats or drawn swords, while Sanji and Crocus also draw heated reactions. Nevertheless, Zoro protects Luffy in combat and takes Xia Chen’s abnormal behavior seriously enough to warn the others against approaching him 11 12 31 42 44 46.
Zoro loves alcohol, ordering expensive booze at Xia Chen’s expense and joking that drinking is all his wounds need. His poor sense of direction is equally conspicuous: the crew rejects his offer to guard Syrup Village’s northern approach because they doubt he can find north 6 8 19 33.
His navigational problems persist long after entering the Grand Line. Xia Chen must correct his route at Whiskey Peak, he gets lost after going swimming on Drum Island, and he later considers solving his wandering on Sabaody by walking straight ahead and cutting down anything in his path 53 72 286. He is reluctant to admit these mistakes, presenting his exposure to Drum Island’s cold as deliberate training instead 72.
Zoro actively seeks stronger opponents and treats difficult battles as opportunities to improve. Learning that the Admirals are comparable to Mihawk excites him rather than discourages him, and he immediately resumes exercising. He likewise welcomes the chance to train against Ohm’s Observation Haki and grows visibly excited during his difficult duel with Mole 99 122 203. His commitment to swordsmanship also leads him to reject the offered Rumble-Rumble Fruit, stating that he has no interest in Devil Fruits 129.
He is capable of restraint and respect toward defeated opponents. He spares Mole after their duel and asks Chopper to save Kin’emon following their first fight, believing that Kin’emon is not a bad person 203 326. By Wano, however, his attitude toward enemies has become harsher. Knowing that Kin’emon’s loyalty to the Kozuki family makes lasting friendship impossible after Xia Chen’s actions, Zoro approaches their renewed conflict with killing intent; Xia Chen explicitly notices his increased willingness to kill enemies 469.
Despite his rivalry with Sanji, Zoro can cooperate with him immediately when the crew is threatened. During Big Mom’s pursuit, he asks Sanji to remain behind with him while the others escape, and the two later fight together because neither can handle her alone 450 451 491.
Abilities & Skills
Swordsmanship
Zoro fights with three swords and possesses enough skill to defeat Cabaji and the Nyaban Brothers, but his early encounters with Mihawk and Xia Chen expose a substantial gap in strength 13 22 25 37.
- Oni Giri: Defeats Cabaji with deep wounds across his chest. Mihawk later stops all three blades with a tiny knife 13 25. After learning Haki, Zoro uses it to inflict a major wound on Enel 126.
- Three Thousand Worlds: A technique involving the rotation of the swords in his hands. Used against Mihawk’s Yoru, it ends in Zoro’s defeat and the destruction of two swords 26. He later uses it against King, whose active flame-backed defense initially prevents it from damaging his flesh 475.
- Defensive interception: Blocks Buggy’s knives with Wado Ichimonji and later intercepts another attack aimed at Luffy’s treasured hat 11 12.
- Early limitation: At Shells Town, he has not developed Swordless Style, leaving him of little help in battle until he recovers his weapons 5.
- Realm of Cutting Iron: Comprehends the realm by Whiskey Peak, becoming a true swordmaster. His already-established ability to cut iron later allows him to defeat Mr. 1 without the prolonged struggle that Xia Chen remembers from the original story 53 90.
- Flying Slash: Projects cutting attacks through the air. He uses one against Ohm and later overpowers an incoming slash in Wano with a slash drawn from Wado Ichimonji 122 466.
- One-Sword Style: Iai: Death Lion Song: A rapid drawing attack that splits Enel’s Thunderbird. Xia Chen later catches the same technique during a sparring match 126 131.
- 108 Pound Phoenix: Unleashes sword energy powerful enough to clear a path through Enel’s eighty-million-volt Discharge 126.
- Three-Sword Style: Black Rope Dragon Twister: Creates a tornado of sword energy that sweeps up multiple opponents. It catches the zombie generals and Perona, and later leaves numerous small cuts on Kaido 145 485.
- Black Rope: Great Dragon Twister: Uses a black sword-energy tornado against Sentomaru and the Pacifistas. Their combined counterattack neutralizes it, leaving both sides uninjured 289.
- One-Sword Style: Great Dragon Shock: Projects a powerful blade aura that severs Sadi’s whip and continues toward her. During later training, a simple stroke with the technique rapidly splits the ground ahead of him 176 241.
- Great Thousand Worlds: An improved Three-Sword Style secret technique performed with Armament Haki coating all three blades. Zoro identifies it as his strongest move at the time of his duel with Mole and uses it to defeat him. He later uses it in his final exchange with Kin’emon 203 326.
- Rengoku Onigiri / Purgatory Oni Giri: A Three-Sword Style technique used during training against Usopp and in his first duel with Kin’emon 266 324.
- Azure Dragon’s Cry, Flowing Water: A Three-Sword Style secret technique that cuts Kin’emon across the chest during their first duel 326.
- Extreme Tiger Hunt: A powerful strike accompanied by an illusory tiger. It briefly drives Big Mom backward despite her enormous strength and is also used against King 452 475.
- Crossroads of the Six Paths: Produces a slash shaped like “卌,” cutting through King’s incoming flame bullets before continuing toward him 475.
- 1080 Pound Phoenix: Launches an enormous blue sword wave. Zoro uses it alongside the Red Hair Pirates’ attacks to help confront a giant wave 527.
Demon Aura: Nine-Sword Style
Zoro’s Nine-Sword Style creates the appearance of three heads, six arms, and nine swords. He first demonstrates it in the supplied account against Vice Admiral Mole, immediately resorting to the form because he recognizes the danger of his opponent 192.
- Asura: Ichibugin: Simultaneously moves all nine swords to reduce powerful incoming sword waves to mist. Zoro uses it against Big Mom’s flaming slashes and King’s sword wave 452 478.
- Asura: Sword Draw: Dead Man’s Game: A high-speed attack that cuts through King’s defense while his flame is active. Against Beckman, Zoro shatters a Haki-coated bullet’s shock wave before accelerating into the same drawing attack, leaving a wound across nearly the whole of Beckman’s chest 477 478 531.
- Solidification: During the King battle, Zoro makes the additional bodies and weapons solid rather than merely illusory. King, who could previously identify the central body as the real one, can no longer distinguish between the three 478.
- Continuous attacks: The solidified Asura form permits Nine-Sword Style moves to flow seamlessly into one another, placing King under sustained pressure 480.
- Later manifestation: Beckman describes Zoro’s Asura manifestation as an illusion created through sheer presence, but admits that even he cannot see through it 531.
Haki
- Armament Haki: First formally explained to him by Xia Chen, who emphasizes its offensive, defensive, and sword-protecting uses. Zoro masters it after leaving Alabasta, immediately testing a Haki-enhanced slash on Xia Chen 54 100.
- Blade coating: Can coat all three swords in Armament Haki simultaneously, as shown when preparing Great Thousand Worlds against Mole 203.
- Defensive coating: Uses Armament Haki on his hands and body to withstand attacks, including Enel’s lightning and King’s blow that sends him crashing into a mountainside 127 476.
- Observation Haki: Awakens during his fight with Enel after recalling Xia Chen’s teaching about sensing the breath of living things. It allows him to anticipate Enel’s attacks and evade the Lightning Dragon 126.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Publicly demonstrates it against Bullet. Together with Luffy’s, his Haki matches Bullet’s pressure. He later releases it again before the confrontation with the Beasts Pirates 384 474.
Endurance and Willpower
Zoro withstands prolonged deprivation and persists through severe injuries 5 25 26.
- Endures twenty days without food while restrained at the Marine base 5.
- Refuses to retreat after Mihawk pierces his chest with a knife 25.
- Survives Mihawk’s subsequent slash and being thrown into the sea, regaining consciousness after rescue 26.
- Resumes challenging Xia Chen whenever he has recovered enough to fight, despite repeated defeats 37.
- Even his willpower does not entirely resist Xia Chen’s controlled demonized killing intent, which causes him a moment of fear 32.
- Remains conscious after defending against Enel’s hundred-million-volt Discharge, although he collapses, charred and unable to continue fighting effectively 127.
- Volunteers to fight Xia Chen alongside Luffy and Sanji despite his recent injuries from Enel 130.
- Continues fighting Mole after sustaining numerous wounds, gradually adapting to his opponent’s attacks throughout the duel 203.
- Recovers from being hurled into mountainsides by King and continues fighting despite chest pain and damaged clothing 476 478.
- Develops increased resistance to lightning through his stronger physique and repeated shocks from Nami after she obtains the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 490.
Observation and Judgment
Zoro recognizes details that his companions sometimes overlook, particularly changes in Xia Chen’s abilities and behavior 9 21 31.
- Identifies the dark gleam on Xia Chen’s fist as the likely reason his punch can hurt Luffy, rather than accepting the explanation of a “fist filled with love” 9.
- Correctly suspects Xia Chen caused the butler to faint without touching him 17 21.
- Recognizes that Xia Chen’s indiscriminate killing at Arlong Park contradicts his usual personality and stops Nami from approaching while his condition remains uncertain 31.
- Pretends to pass out at Whiskey Peak’s feast, remaining alert alongside Xia Chen and Nami 50.
- Identifies Ohm’s Observation Haki from the fact that he begins evading before Zoro launches his attack, rather than merely reacting afterward 122.
- Warns his companions to get down before Moria’s enormous sword wave cuts through the surrounding forests 150.
- Notices that Water Seven’s inhabitants are unusually unconcerned by the open arrival of pirates 159.
- Deduces that King’s active flame increases his defense at the expense of speed, while its absence changes that balance 478.
- Questions the public account of Elegia’s destruction because it conflicts with what he knows of Luffy’s admiration for Shanks 515.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Wado Ichimonji — His named sword, used to defend Luffy against Buggy and to spar with Xia Chen. It remains in use after the Mihawk duel 11 12 37. He later uses it to split Enel’s Thunderbird and counter an incoming flying slash in Wano 126 466.
- Two additional swords — Used alongside Wado Ichimonji against Mihawk; both snap following Three Thousand Worlds 25 26.
- Black bandanna — Part of his attire at his first on-page appearance 4. Later worn around his arm when not tied on his head for serious combat 469 472 531.
- Shusui — One of the Twenty-One Great Grade Swords. Zoro retrieves it after the zombie battle on Thriller Bark and identifies it using his sword catalog. Its presence later provokes Kin’emon, who recognizes it as Wano’s national treasure 145 324.
- Replacement swords and spare blade — By the time he claims Shusui, Zoro has four swords in total: three for use and one spare. The supplied account does not name all of these blades 145.
- Famous Sword catalog — A booklet he entrusts to Usopp and consults to confirm Shusui’s identity 145.
- Training dumbbells — Used to exercise aboard ship, including immediately after hearing about the strength of the Marine Admirals 99.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Shells Town: Recruitment
Luffy finds Zoro bound in the Marine base’s execution grounds. Zoro initially refuses to become a pirate, calling pirates a force of evil, while Luffy offers to retrieve the swords confiscated by the captain’s son 4.
Xia Chen cuts Zoro’s ropes, feeds him, and carries him to the rooftop using Geppo. Although Zoro worries about leaving him alone against Morgan, he follows Luffy to recover his swords. By the time they return, Xia Chen has defeated Morgan and Luffy has persuaded Zoro to join, making him the crew’s third member 5 6.
Orange Town and Syrup Village
At Orange Town, Zoro protects Luffy from Buggy’s knives and defeats Cabaji with Oni Giri. Afterward, he joins Xia Chen on Richie’s head and begins shouting advice at Luffy despite previously dismissing the idea of riding the lion 11 12 13.
At Syrup Village, Zoro supports Usopp’s determination to protect his home. His offer to cover the northern approach is rejected because of his poor navigation. During the battle, he fights beside Luffy against the pirates before taking on and defeating the Nyaban Brothers 19 21 22.
Baratie: Defeat by Mihawk
Mihawk’s arrival gives Zoro the opportunity to challenge the swordsman he set out to defeat. Mihawk initially dismisses him and effortlessly counters his attacks with a small knife. Zoro’s refusal to retreat after being stabbed earns Mihawk’s respect, prompting him to draw the Black Blade Yoru 25.
Zoro loses the final exchange, breaking two swords. He then turns to face Mihawk with his arms spread, declaring that scars on the back shame a swordsman. Mihawk slashes his chest and sends him into the sea, but Zoro survives 26.
Watching Xia Chen subsequently exchange powerful attacks with Mihawk forces Zoro to reassess both his vice-captain’s strength and his own distance from the world’s strongest fighters 26 27.
Cocoyasi Village: Xia Chen’s Loss of Control
After learning that Nami stabbed herself to save Usopp, Zoro agrees to help Luffy reclaim their navigator. He also warns that Xia Chen’s terrifying killing intent signals that something is wrong 30.
At Arlong Park, Zoro prevents Nami from approaching Xia Chen immediately after the slaughter, recognizing that his behavior is abnormal. Once the crisis ends, he joins the village celebrations while continuing to recover from his wounds 31 33.
Training and Entry into the Grand Line
After seeing Xia Chen’s 300-million-Beli bounty, Zoro begins challenging him every day. Although badly outmatched, he grows stronger and approaches the Realm of Cutting Iron. Xia Chen continues as his sparring partner but acknowledges that Zoro must reach the necessary understanding himself 37.
After entering the Grand Line, Zoro clashes verbally with Crocus inside Laboon. At Whiskey Peak, he stays alert through the welcoming feast and goes outside to investigate, eventually confronting Mr. 8 and his group from a rooftop 44 46 50.
At Whiskey Peak, Zoro’s fight with Luffy escalates until Xia Chen catches his blade with a Haki-coated arm and punches both combatants to stop them. Xia Chen confirms that Zoro has comprehended the Realm of Cutting Iron; the danger of Zoro’s final slash also motivates Luffy to seek training. After the misunderstanding is resolved, the two make peace 53.
The next day, Zoro joins Xia Chen’s training group. Xia Chen demonstrates Soru and explains Haki, particularly attracting Zoro’s interest with the possibility of protecting his blades from damage and the revelation that Mihawk has mastered the same power 53 54.
Little Garden, Drum Island, and Alabasta
On Little Garden, Zoro and Sanji confront Mr. 3 and Miss Goldenweek. They evade Mr. 3’s wax, break through his Candle Wall, and strike him together. Mr. 3 falls motionless, Miss Goldenweek faints at Zoro’s glare, and the two Straw Hats immediately argue over whose attack was responsible for the victory 60.
On Drum Island, Xia Chen and Chopper find Zoro after he gets lost while swimming. He claims to be training in the cold, then accompanies them to check on Nami. He and Luffy subsequently offend Kureha by calling her a strange old woman and are chased from Nami’s room 72 73. Karoo later reveals that he entered the freezing sea to rescue Zoro because he thought Zoro had drowned, prompting Nami to punish Zoro 74.
In Alabasta, Zoro is frustrated when Luffy masters Armament Haki first, admitting that he is close to achieving it himself 88. He then defeats Mr. 1 with a single decisive slash, his earlier attainment of Cutting Iron and subsequent training making the obstacle far easier than in the original story 90.
Zoro initially opposes Robin’s request to join the crew and remains among the last holdouts as she wins over the others 94. After leaving Alabasta, he asks Xia Chen about the Admirals and resumes training upon hearing that they are comparable to Mihawk 99. He soon masters Armament Haki and immediately tests it with another unsuccessful attack on Xia Chen 100.
Sky Island: Awakening Observation Haki
Zoro identifies Ohm’s predictive movements as Observation Haki and decides to use the fight to push toward awakening the ability himself 122.
Against Enel, Zoro initially lands a cut because Enel relies too confidently on his Logia intangibility. Once Enel adjusts, Zoro struggles against the speed and range of his lightning, relying on Armament Haki to survive repeated hits 126.
Recalling Xia Chen’s instruction, Zoro closes his eyes and awakens Observation Haki. He splits Thunderbird with Death Lion Song, evades Lightning Dragon, and clears a path through Discharge with 108 Pound Phoenix before severely wounding Enel with Oni Giri. Enel’s subsequent hundred-million-volt Discharge leaves Zoro charred and collapsed, although still conscious 126 127.
Afterward, Zoro refuses the offered Rumble-Rumble Fruit because his ambition remains focused on becoming the world’s strongest swordsman 129. Despite his injuries, he joins Luffy and Sanji in challenging Xia Chen, only to discover that their combined attacks still cannot meaningfully harm him 130 131.
Thriller Bark: Combined Attacks and Shusui
Entering the Florian Triangle does not initially intimidate Zoro; he and Sanji welcome the possibility of an approaching enemy after the crew accidentally launches a flare 134.
During the zombie battle, Zoro proposes sweeping the enemies into the air so Nami can finish them. His newly developed Black Rope Dragon Twister catches the zombie generals and Perona, and Nami electrifies it with a ten-million-volt Discharge. The combined attack destroys the zombies and leaves Perona unconscious 145.
Zoro retrieves Ryuma’s sword and confirms from his catalog that it is Shusui, one of the Twenty-One Great Grade Swords. He now has enough blades for his Three-Sword Style and a spare 145.
He later joins the crew’s battle against Oars, charging first after Brook offers to help 147. When Moria demonstrates his stronger form, Zoro recognizes the danger of an enormous sword wave and orders everyone down, saving them from the slash that cuts through the surrounding forests 150.
Impel Down and the Battle to Rescue Ace
After being held on Impel Down’s Level Six, Zoro recovers his swords from the jailers’ room on Level Five. He confronts Sadi with Great Dragon Shock, severing her whip and overwhelming her attempted defense 176.
During the effort to rescue Ace, Zoro clashes with Vice Admiral Mole and immediately uses Demon Aura: Nine-Sword Style because he recognizes the Marine’s strength 192. Mole initially wounds and pressures him, but Zoro steadily adapts until the two approach parity 203.
Zoro finishes the duel with his improved, Armament-coated Great Thousand Worlds. Mole admits defeat and collapses; Zoro spares him and heads back toward his crewmates 203. The others worry about his whereabouts as they prepare to retreat, but he rejoins them shortly afterward 203 204.
Rayleigh’s Training and Return to Sabaody
Zoro studies swordsmanship and spars with Rayleigh during the crew’s six-month training period. He also fights his crewmates, demonstrating his improved Great Dragon Shock against Usopp and later taking on Usopp and Brook together 241 265 266.
When Xia Chen returns, Zoro attacks him alongside Luffy and Sanji. Despite their confidence in their progress, Xia Chen swiftly knocks all three away 268. Zoro later learns that his bounty has reached 880 million Beli, renewing his argument with Sanji over their relative standing 278.
On Sabaody, Zoro clashes with Sentomaru and the Pacifistas. Their attacks cancel each other until Kizaru intervenes and states that the Marines’ mission concerns impostors, not the real Straw Hats 289. With neither side pursuing the fight, Zoro accepts Sentomaru’s invitation for a drink and joins him and Kizaru at Shakky’s bar 290.
Before departure, Zoro declares his intention to return and cut down Rayleigh, who laughs and accepts the challenge. His crewmates punish him for phrasing his farewell so disrespectfully toward their teacher 291.
Descent to Fish-Man Island and First Duel with Kin’emon
During the descent toward Fish-Man Island, Xia Chen stops Zoro from attacking a giant Sea King through the Thousand Sunny’s coating, warning that breaking it could doom everyone aboard. He instead kicks Zoro outside the coating to fight it and assures the others that Zoro will be able to breathe 292.
Later, Kin’emon attacks the crew while searching for his son. Their confrontation intensifies when he recognizes Shusui and accuses Zoro of stealing both Wano’s national treasure and Ryuma’s body. Zoro explains that he obtained the sword as a trophy from a zombie, but Kin’emon refuses to believe him 323 324.
Zoro wounds Kin’emon with Azure Dragon’s Cry, Flowing Water, then meets his strongest attack with Great Thousand Worlds. Kin’emon leaves a shallow cross-shaped cut on Zoro’s chest but receives a severe abdominal wound and admits defeat. Zoro praises his strength and asks Chopper to treat them both, believing Kin’emon is not a bad person 326.
Pirate Expo: Cavendish and Bullet
Before the Pirate Expo, Cavendish challenges Zoro because he resents the fame and attention gained by the Straw Hats. Zoro initially prepares to fight another swordsman, but Cavendish’s self-dramatizing behavior convinces him that the man is a fool. He sheathes his swords and leaves, while Cavendish mistakenly concludes that Zoro fled in fear 377.
When Bullet confronts the Straw Hats, Zoro releases Conqueror’s Haki beside Luffy. Their combined pressure matches Bullet’s, surprising Luffy and giving Zoro another opportunity to taunt Sanji. Luffy and Zoro attack together, but Bullet sends them flying; Sanji and Usopp then join the battle 384.
Big Mom’s Pursuit
As Big Mom pursues the escaping crew, Zoro asks Sanji to help hold her off while the others continue toward the shore. Usopp refuses to abandon them and joins their stand 450 451.
Zoro’s Extreme Tiger Hunt briefly drives Big Mom backward. When she answers with a barrage of flaming sword waves, he enters Nine-Sword Style and reduces the attacks to mist with Asura: Ichibugin. The exertion makes clear that their objective is to delay her, not to defeat her outright 452.
Wano: Kin’emon, King, and the Emperors
Zoro again clashes with Kin’emon after intervening in his attack on someone the Straw Hats regard as their prey. He denies that the crew is allied with Kaido and rejects Kin’emon’s accusations 466 468 469.
Unlike their first encounter, Zoro views reconciliation as impossible because Xia Chen has killed Momonosuke and Kozuki Oden, while Kin’emon remains devoted to the Kozuki family. He fights with heightened killing intent and ultimately leaves Kin’emon kneeling with a massive abdominal wound and fading consciousness 469 472.
During the confrontation with the Beasts Pirates, Zoro releases Conqueror’s Haki and subsequently faces King 474 475. King’s durability and speed initially frustrate him, and a powerful attack sends him crashing into a mountainside, with Armament Haki limiting the damage 475 476.
Zoro wounds King through his active flame defense with Dead Man’s Game and deduces how the flame affects his defensive strength and speed. After another heavy impact, he solidifies his Nine-Sword Style, making all three bodies appear equally real to King. His attacks break King’s mask and reveal his Lunarian features, while the ability to chain Nine-Sword Style techniques places King under sustained pressure 477 478 480.
Zoro later reaches the rooftop and attacks Kaido with Black Rope Dragon Twister, leaving small cuts despite Kaido’s confidence in his defenses 485. He then fights Big Mom alongside Sanji while Luffy takes Kaido 487. When Luffy needs time to recover, Zoro asks Sanji to hold Kaido off; afterward, the two resume cooperating against Big Mom because neither has the strength to face her alone 490 491.
Following these developments, Zoro’s bounty rises to 2.22 billion Beli 511.
Elegia, the Red Hair Pirates, and Egghead
Zoro questions the account blaming Shanks for Elegia’s destruction, reasoning that Luffy would not admire a casually murderous pirate so deeply. Xia Chen confirms that the public version is not the true account 515.
During the encounter with the Red Hair Pirates, Zoro helps counter a giant wave with 1080 Pound Phoenix and later fights Benn Beckman 527 531. Beckman’s gunfire places him under greater pressure than King did, but Zoro enters Nine-Sword Style, destroys a Haki-coated bullet, and wounds Beckman with Dead Man’s Game. Beckman retaliates with stronger gunfire, including aligned shock waves that merge into a red laser 531 532.
Their completed fight is described as practically a draw, although Beckman is slightly stronger. On parting, Beckman predicts that Zoro will eventually defeat Mihawk, and Zoro calls Beckman the strongest pirate crew second-in-command he has encountered 534.
On Egghead Island, Zoro is among those who encounter the severely injured Law after Kuma sends him there. He expresses concern about Law’s condition, after which Law uses his remaining hand to treat some of his wounds 542.
