Appearance
- Hair: Orange 7.
- Initial clothing: A blue-and-white shirt with yellow shorts 7.
- Arlong Pirates tattoo: Originally on her arm; she repeatedly stabs it during her despair over the villagers’ decision to confront Arlong 30.
- Later tattoo: A design combining a tangerine, a pinwheel, and a sun. The tangerine commemorates Bellemere, while the pinwheel commemorates Cocoyasi Village; the sun’s meaning is not explained 34.
- Lightning-clad appearance: When confronting Ulti, blue lightning surrounds her body, her hair transforms into lightning, and her eyes become blue-white. This gives her the appearance of a thunder queen. Her hair returns to orange as she lets the lightning fade after the battle 488 489.
Personality
Nami is resourceful and quick to improvise when threatened. After failing to ambush Xia Chen, she adopts a helpless persona and claims to have mistaken him for a Marine. When pirates pursue her in Orange Town, she calls him “Boss” to draw him into the confrontation 7 9.
She is openly money-conscious, fiercely protective of treasure, and attentive to small expenses. She angrily dunks Luffy’s head in water after learning that he left treasure for Orange Town’s residents, and later argues with a News Coo over the price of a daily newspaper. Financial incentives can immediately change her mind: she initially declines Whiskey Peak’s drinking contest, then insists on entering when offered a 100,000-Beli prize 14 35 50.
Her attachment to money does not outweigh her concern for Cocoyasi Village. She gathers a hundred million Beli to pay Arlong and, after gaining her freedom, leaves those savings to the villagers. She initially insists on solving her problems alone, even after witnessing her companions’ strength, but eventually accepts their support 7 27 30 34 35.
Nami is more cautious than several of her crewmates. She regards bounties as a source of danger rather than prestige and questions Whiskey Peak’s unusually enthusiastic welcome. Despite that caution, her trust in Xia Chen becomes strong enough that she feels secure investigating the town’s intentions 36 49 50.
Her financial enthusiasm continues throughout the voyage. She reverses her opposition to Robin joining the crew when Robin offers a bag of Crocodile’s gems, envies the apparent wealth-generating potential of Tesoro’s Gold-Gold Fruit, and is delighted by Baccarat’s promise of a large monetary gift. Nevertheless, she is willing to pay any price for high-quality millennium paper, surprising her companions 94 99 363 369.
Nami fears prehistoric beasts, ghosts, and zombies, often sharing Usopp and Chopper’s reluctance to explore dangerous places. Her growing strength does not immediately erase these habits: she initially forgets that her Logia abilities protect her from ordinary zombie attacks. Once she realizes the effectiveness of her lightning, however, she becomes exuberantly aggressive, pursuing fleeing zombies rather than running from them 56 135 140 142 145.
Her decision to eat the Rumble-Rumble Fruit stems from a desire to stop being the crewmate who needs the most protection. She becomes increasingly willing to fight for her companions, intercepting Ulti’s attack on the exhausted Chopper and later urging the crew to investigate powerful newcomers approaching Luffy’s battlefield 129 130 488 495.
Although she can eventually defeat someone of Arlong’s strength easily, hearing his name still causes an involuntary reaction of fear. Xia Chen’s embrace reassures her, and she refuses to hold Jinbe responsible for Arlong’s actions 295.
Abilities & Skills
Navigation
Nami serves as the Straw Hats’ navigator and aspires to become the finest navigator 10 42.
- Reads nautical charts and monitors the ship’s course 14 42 43.
- Recognizes that Reverse Mountain’s powerful current should carry the Going Merry toward the entrance canal 42.
- Detects a dangerous course deviation that would send the ship into a pillar 43.
- Learns about the Grand Line’s magnetic routes and receives a Log Pose after discovering that an ordinary compass does not work there 48.
- Still needs guidance in unfamiliar conditions: Xia Chen explains Reverse Mountain’s uphill current and identifies the canal entrance when she fears a collision with the Red Line 42 43.
- Predicts an approaching storm while the weather still appears clear. The crew follows her instructions without hesitation, allowing them to prepare and leave the storm’s area quickly 134.
- Detects a sudden change in the current during the treasure-island event and warns that the Thousand Sunny is being pulled toward a whirlpool 378.
- Recognizes the extreme weather and rough seas surrounding Wano and explains their role in the country’s isolation 463.
- Continues to oppose unnecessary navigational risks, including Luffy’s insistence on visiting Punk Hazard despite the Log Pose not pointing toward it 321.
Her expertise is not infallible. During the descent toward Fish-Man Island, she admits that she neglected Rayleigh’s coating manual because she had been absorbed in shopping, leaving Xia Chen to explain the danger of breaking the ship’s coating underwater 292.
Theft and Deception
Nami uses reconnaissance, misdirection, and sleight of hand to obtain treasure and escape trouble 7 9 35.
- Stakes out a Marine base before entering and gathering its treasure 7.
- Attempts to enlist the Straw Hats in stealing Buggy’s treasure 10.
- Picks the Cocoyasi villagers’ pockets while weaving through their farewell gathering, revealing the stolen wallets only after boarding the Going Merry 35.
- Pretends to pass out after Whiskey Peak’s feast while remaining alert to the townspeople’s intentions 50.
- Feigns terror after Ulti shatters her lightning spear, then reveals the act and evades in lightning form, causing Ulti to strike seven or eight Princes of Lanling instead 488.
Observation and Deduction
- Correctly deduces that Luffy was hypnotized after hearing that he fell asleep while watching a man’s iron ring 19.
- Remains suspicious of Whiskey Peak’s hospitality alongside Zoro and Xia Chen 49 50.
- Checks Genzo and the other collapsed villagers, establishing that they are asleep rather than injured or dead 31.
- Recognizes that Neptune’s unusually generous hospitality likely conceals a request for assistance, prompting him to admit that he wants the Straw Hats’ name to protect Fish-Man Island 297.
- Anticipates that the powerful newcomers heading toward the rooftop in Wano may change the course of the battle and asks Usopp to take the crew there 495.
Practical Skills
- Mending: Agrees to repair Luffy’s punctured straw hat after the battle with Buggy 14.
- Staff use: Attempts a surprise strike at Xia Chen’s neck, though he easily evades it 7.
- Drinking tolerance: Wins Whiskey Peak’s drinking contest and remains alert afterward 50.
Physical Training and Combat
Xia Chen encourages Nami to train because the crew cannot guarantee her protection against increasingly dangerous enemies. After several days of training, she and Usopp defeat Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine together, despite initially freezing in fear at the encounter 55 61.
Before eating her Devil Fruit, Nami considers herself the weakest member of the crew and has obtained no results from attempting the Haki training Xia Chen described. Even immediately after gaining the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, her weak physique limits her output. Later battles demonstrate substantial improvement, although prolonged fighting and powerful discharges still expend her stamina 129 130 142 203.
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Nami receives the Rumble-Rumble Fruit from Xia Chen and eats it to improve her ability to protect herself. Her first attempt produces only a tiny electrical arc, but daily practice develops the ability into destructive lightning attacks and effective Logia defenses 129 130 142.
- Lightning generation and shaping: Produces electricity directly and shapes it into beasts, birds, dragons, a kirin, and spears 142 176 380 488.
- Elemental transformation: Transforms her body into lightning. Ryuma’s sword passes through her abdomen without causing an ordinary wound because his zombie body cannot use Armament Haki 145.
- High-speed movement: Travels as a flash of lightning, appearing before Ulti almost instantly and later relocating a hundred meters behind Wu Horse 488 499.
- Aerial combat: Hovers in midair while fighting Ulti and Wu Horse 488 489 499.
- Anti-zombie attacks: Burns zombie bodies away with lightning, releasing their shadows without requiring salt. This lets her permanently finish enemies that her companions can only temporarily knock down 142 145.
- Thundercloud utilization: Existing thunderclouds make certain attacks easier to perform and strengthen their power, although she can generate lightning without them 499.
- Lightning interception: Envelops the Thousand Sunny in a net of lightning that harmlessly receives a natural lightning strike during the approach to Wano 463.
Her early maximum is ten million volts, and using that output exhausts her. Her limit reaches thirty million volts by Water 7 and sixty million volts by the confrontation with Sadi in Impel Down. She later demonstrates hundred-million-volt techniques 142 176 380 488.
Her Devil Fruit does not make her invincible against powerful opponents. Sadi destroys her strongest available Thunder Dragon with an Armament Haki-coated whip; Ulti shatters Thunder God’s Spear; and Wu Horse uses superior Observation Haki to anticipate her reappearance and corner her before she can transform again 176 488 499.
Haki
- Observation Haki: Nami masters Observation Haki with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit’s assistance. When first demonstrated, her sensory range is enormous and slightly exceeds Xia Chen’s range at that time, though their specialties differ 155.
- Enhanced hearing and reconnaissance: Combines Observation Haki with her fruit to hear distant pirates discussing her nickname and to survey Wano, detecting samurai and women wearing kimonos 380 466.
- Combat limitations: Her broad sensing range does not guarantee superior combat prediction. Wu Horse exploits the gap in their Observation Haki to catch her at the moment she reappears from lightning movement 499.
- “Conqueror’s Coating”: After Zoro mocks the tiny spark she produces upon eating her fruit, Nami explicitly calls out “Conqueror’s Coating” and knocks him out. The scene is presented as a comic disciplinary blow; it does not establish a formal level of Conqueror’s Haki training 130.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Description | Demonstrated Result |
|---|---|---|

- Nautical charts — Consulted during voyages, including the approach to Reverse Mountain 14 42.
- Telescope — Used to inspect the Red Line and the ship’s approach 43.
- Log Pose — Given to her by Crocus for navigation through the Grand Line. She temporarily hands the Log Pose pointing toward Little Garden to Xia Chen so he can find his way back after searching for a doctor 48 64.
- Fresh tangerines — Her supply aboard the Going Merry is used to help Yosaku recover from scurvy 23.
- Kokoro’s Water 7 map — Given to help the crew locate Iceburg. Nami later throws it down in frustration because the drawing is incomprehensible 158 159.
Relationships
- Xia Chen — First meets her as a rival for Marine treasure and lets her keep it in exchange for one future condition within her capabilities. He later comforts her, kills Arlong, and frees her from his control. Nami develops deep trust and growing affection toward him, though no romantic relationship is established 7 30 33 34 43 50. He finds medical help after her Kestia bite, carries her to Kureha, encourages her training, and gives her the Rumble-Rumble Fruit 55 64 67 129 130. She cries in his arms after believing the Marines captured him, watches over him after his near-fatal injuries, and repeatedly expresses that she feels safest beside him 93 109 140. He also comforts her when Arlong’s name revives her fear on Fish-Man Island 295.
- Monkey D. Luffy — Her captain. She initially refuses his invitation because she hates pirates, but later accepts her place among his companions. Their friendship includes frequent clashes over money, recklessness, and his treatment of treasure 10 14 30 36. She continues to punish his dangerous ideas and oppose his impulsive detours, but trusts that he will not lose to Kaido and goes to the rooftop when outside interference threatens his battle 282 321 495.
- Roronoa Zoro — Crewmate and frequent target of her teasing or expediency. At Syrup Village, she uses his back as a foothold to escape an oil-covered slope, leaving him furious 19 21. She knocks him out for mocking her initial lightning output, but later cooperates effectively with him against Thriller Bark’s zombie generals, electrifying his Black Rope Dragon Twister 130 145.
- Usopp — Crewmate whom she protects by stabbing herself rather than killing him, contrary to Johnny’s report of his death 30. They share early fears about dangerous enemies and jointly defeat Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine after training. Her later success with the Rumble-Rumble Fruit helps inspire his desire for a powerful Devil Fruit of his own 61 154.
- Sanji — Crewmate who offers her special treatment, including free food, and vigorously defends her when Zoro questions her navigation 24 42 47. He later saves her from Wu Horse’s blade. She is delighted by the rescue but punches him away when he asks for a kiss as a reward 499 500.
- Bellemere — Her deceased mother. Nami visits her grave after Arlong’s defeat and tells her that she intends to become a pirate 34.
- Cocoyasi villagers — The people she works to save from Arlong. She leaves them her hundred million Beli before departing, and their farewell mixes complaints about her pickpocketing with blessings for her future 7 34 35.
- Arlong — Her oppressor and the intended recipient of the money she gathers to secure Cocoyasi Village’s freedom 7 30 33. The memory of his abuse still frightens her long after she becomes strong enough to defeat him herself 295.
- Crocus — Gives her a Log Pose and explains that the Grand Line’s seven routes ultimately lead toward Laugh Tale 48.
- Dr. Kureha — Treats Nami’s Kestia infection after Xia Chen brings her to the mountain castle on Drum Island 67.
- Nico Robin — Nami initially opposes allowing a former Baroque Works enemy aboard, but immediately welcomes Robin when offered Crocodile’s gems. They later explore together and go shopping for clothes on Sabaody 94 122 283.
- Tony Tony Chopper — Crewmate and doctor. Nami urgently asks him to treat the gravely injured Xia Chen. In Wano, she protects the exhausted Chopper from Ulti, then carries him after winning 109 488 489.
- Jinbe — Apologizes for the suffering caused by his former subordinate Arlong. Nami tells him that he is not responsible and that Arlong’s death has settled the matter 295.
- Ulti — Opponent who attacks Chopper to avenge Page One’s defeat. Nami intercepts her, tricks her during their fight, and defeats her with five lightning beasts 488 489.
History
Meeting Xia Chen
Nami first encounters Xia Chen while gathering treasure at a Marine base. Her surprise attack fails, and she realizes that she cannot fight him directly. Xia Chen offers to surrender his claim to the treasure if she promises to fulfill one future condition, limited to something within her abilities 7.
She accepts, initially assuming that she can avoid meeting him again. Her plan is to accumulate a hundred million Beli, pay Arlong, and remain in Cocoyasi Village afterward 7.
Traveling with the Straw Hats
Nami meets Xia Chen again in Orange Town while fleeing Buggy’s men. Impressed by his strength, she proposes an alliance to steal Buggy’s treasure. Luffy invites her to become the crew’s navigator, but she refuses upon learning that they are pirates, associating pirates with the occupation and oppression of villages 9 10.
She nevertheless cooperates with the group and guides them to Buggy. After his defeat, she agrees to mend Luffy’s hat and leaves with the others. Learning that Luffy defeated a pirate worth fifteen million Beli briefly makes her wonder whether he could also defeat Arlong, whose bounty is twenty million 10 14.
At Syrup Village, Nami helps uncover the circumstances of Luffy’s hypnosis and joins the effort to defend the village. She subsequently travels aboard the Going Merry through Treasure Island and to the Baratie 19 22 23 24.
Return to Cocoyasi Village
While watching Xia Chen fight Hawk-Eyes, Nami recognizes his extraordinary strength but decides that her own problems remain hers to solve. She secretly boards the Going Merry and leaves for Arlong Park; Luffy and the others resolve to follow her 27 28.
Back in Cocoyasi Village, she protects Usopp by stabbing herself. When the villagers decide to fight Arlong rather than let her continue bearing their suffering alone, she breaks down and repeatedly attacks the Arlong Pirates tattoo on her arm. Xia Chen stops her, embraces her, and promises to deal with Arlong 30.
His intervention restores her hope, and she welcomes her arriving companions instead of pushing them away. At Arlong Park, she is initially terrified by the sight of collapsed villagers, then relieved to discover that they are merely asleep. She subsequently witnesses the bloody aftermath of Xia Chen’s attack 30 31.
Freedom and Departure
After Arlong’s death, Xia Chen tells Nami that she is free. During the village celebrations, she visits Bellemere’s grave and announces her decision to become a pirate 33 34.
Nami leaves her hundred million Beli to the villagers and persuades Xia Chen to reveal part of his own fortune. She takes the displayed treasure and gives him only a hundred thousand Beli, unaware that he has concealed most of his wealth 34 35.
At departure, she silently signals Xia Chen to have the Going Merry set sail before her farewell is complete. She then runs through the crowd, steals the villagers’ wallets, and leaps aboard as their protests turn into affectionate goodbyes 35.
Entering the Grand Line
Nami guides the Going Merry toward Reverse Mountain, working with Xia Chen to understand the current and avoid a collision at the canal entrance. At Twin Cape, she discovers the limitations of her ordinary compass and receives a Log Pose from Crocus 42 43 48.
At Whiskey Peak, she remains wary of the town’s welcome. She wins its drinking contest, feigns unconsciousness, and then goes searching for treasure once the townspeople leave 49 50.
Little Garden and Drum Island
Xia Chen warns Nami that her role as navigator does not eliminate the need for personal strength. She begins training, and on Little Garden she and Usopp encounter Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine. Although initially frightened, they defeat the pair together 55 61.
As the crew prepares to continue toward Alabasta, Nami experiences pain from what she initially dismisses as a bug bite. Xia Chen identifies it as a Kestia bite and explains that the infection could kill her within five days without treatment. He reassures her, borrows the Log Pose pointing toward Little Garden, and searches the surrounding sea for a doctor 64.
After locating Drum Island, Xia Chen brings the crew there and carries Nami to the mountain castle. Kureha treats her and asks how she encountered the supposedly extinct insect, learning that Nami had visited an Ancient Island 67.
Alabasta
During the confrontation with Baroque Works, Nami tells Luffy and Sanji to accompany Vivi to the palace while she, Usopp, and Chopper handle the three remaining opponents. She reassures their enemies that they are the crew’s weakest members, while her group advances with threatening smiles 90.
Nami later rushes into Xia Chen’s arms, crying because Crocodile had led her to fear that the Marines captured him. Xia Chen reassures her that he is safe and tells her not to believe such claims. Their reunion takes place as Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji finish defeating Crocodile 93.
When Robin subsequently asks to join the Straw Hats, Nami firmly objects to accepting a former enemy. Her opposition vanishes when Robin offers a bag of gems taken from Crocodile 94.
Journey to Sky Island and Acquiring Lightning Powers
Nami joins Xia Chen and Robin in exploring a ship in the sky, changing her mind about the excursion after seeing Xia Chen carry Robin. Later, when Xia Chen suffers near-fatal injuries, Nami urges Chopper to begin treatment immediately and watches over Xia Chen while he remains unconscious. He awakens after half a day 101 109.
During the Sky Island journey, Nami confronts her limited strength and unsuccessful Haki training. When Xia Chen offers the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, she resolves to eat it so she will no longer require the most protection aboard the ship 129.
The fruit tastes intensely unpleasant, and her initial attempt at using its power produces only a tiny electrical arc. When Zoro mocks her, she knocks him out with an attack called “Conqueror’s Coating.” Xia Chen encourages her and considers improving her physique gradually 130.
Thriller Bark
After Nami successfully predicts a storm, the crew enters the Florian Triangle. Stories of ghosts, skeletons, and zombies frighten her, and she clings to Xia Chen rather than joining the first expedition to a ghost ship. She later agrees to go ashore because she feels safest beside him 134 135 140.
On Thriller Bark, Nami tests her developing lightning powers against the island’s zombies. Her ten-million-volt Thunder Beast tears through the forest, and Thunder Finger burns away a tree zombie. Realizing that her attacks can destroy the supposedly undying enemies, she overcomes her initial fear and chases the fleeing cemetery zombies 142.
More powerful zombies briefly restore her caution when one cuts her lightning apart. However, Ryuma’s subsequent sword attack reveals that the zombies cannot injure her lightning body without Armament Haki. Nami begins supporting Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, finishing the zombies they knock down 143 145.
At Zoro’s instruction, she pours Ten Million Volts: Discharge into his Black Rope Dragon Twister. The combined lightning and sword-energy tornado destroys the gathered zombies and leaves Perona unconscious 145.
Observation Haki and Water 7
In the period after Thriller Bark, Nami masters Observation Haki with assistance from her Devil Fruit. On reaching an apparently uninhabited island, she demonstrates an enormous sensory range that slightly exceeds Xia Chen’s range at that time 155.
At the Sea Train station, Nami questions Chimney about Puffing Tom and asks Kokoro for recommendations for repairing and reinforcing the Going Merry. Kokoro directs the crew to Iceburg and provides a map, but Nami finds its drawing incomprehensible after reaching Water 7. She then joins Luffy and Usopp in the group assigned to exchange the crew’s gold 158 159.
Impel Down and Marine Headquarters
While escaping Impel Down to continue toward Marine Headquarters, Nami attacks Chief Jailer Sadi with Thirty Million Volts: Thunderbird. When that proves insufficient, she reveals that she has surpassed her Water 7 limit and launches Sixty Million Volts: Thunder Dragon. Sadi destroys the dragon with her Haki-coated whip, forcing Nami to recognize that her strongest current attack is inadequate 176.
During the fighting against the Marines, Nami’s lightning readily overwhelms ordinary soldiers. Nevertheless, repeated waves of reinforcements wear on her stamina. After Xia Chen rescues Luffy’s brother, Nami and the others agree to withdraw toward the Ark Maxim, although Chopper worries that Zoro is still missing 185 203.
New Ship, Sabaody, and Fish-Man Island
After Xia Chen returns, Nami reminds him that Franky has finished the crew’s new ship and delayed its unveiling until everyone can attend. At the unveiling, she recognizes Iceburg as the shipwright Kokoro recommended and discusses the crew’s interrupted visit to Water 7 with him 274 277.
On Sabaody, Nami shops for clothes with Robin. During the later descent toward Fish-Man Island, she stops Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji from provoking a giant Sea King, but admits that shopping distracted her from reading the coating manual 283 292.
On Fish-Man Island, hearing Arlong’s name triggers her lingering fear. Xia Chen comforts her, and Usopp explains her history to Jinbe. When Jinbe apologizes for his former subordinate’s actions, Nami tells him that he bears no responsibility and that Arlong’s death has ended the matter 295.
Nami also questions Neptune’s unusually generous reception. Her suspicion proves correct when he admits that he wants to borrow the Straw Hats’ name to protect the island 297.
New World Voyages and the Meteor
At Punk Hazard, Nami opposes landing on an island the Log Pose has not indicated, particularly after learning that its purple gas is poisonous. She reluctantly agrees after Xia Chen promises to shield the crew 321.
On Gran Tesoro, Nami is fascinated by Tesoro’s apparent ability to generate gold and envies its financial potential. Baccarat discourages her from stealing the city’s decorations by pointing out the surveillance Den Den Mushi, then delights her with a promise that Tesoro will give the crew a large sum of Beli. Nami subsequently asks to visit the best casino 363 369.
During the treasure-island event, she detects a changed current and warns that the Sunny is being drawn into a whirlpool, only for Luffy to treat the situation as an adventure. When a meteor later threatens the area, Nami forms One Hundred Million Volts: Heavenly Thunder Kirin. The attack fails to damage the meteor, and she angrily rejects the pirates’ nickname of “Lightning Witch” 378 380.
After the crew’s voyage through Totto Land, Nami reads the newspaper announcing Luffy as the New World’s fourth emperor, surprising the crew 459.
Wano and Defeating Ulti
As the crew approaches Wano, Nami explains the region’s extreme sea conditions. Usopp lifts the Thousand Sunny into the air to avoid the waves, but this exposes the ship to the thunderstorm. Rooftop Battle and Wu Horse

Sanji saves her with a kick that sends Wu Horse away 499.
