Background / History
Childhood and Adopted Family
The Roger Pirates discovered Shanks while he was still a swaddled infant and adopted him. He grew up aboard their ship and remembered that period as a happy part of his life 518.
Years later, Shanks and his crew found a baby girl among treasure seized from another pirate crew. Remembering his own adoption, he immediately decided to raise her. The girl, Uta, became his daughter and was brought up collectively by the Red Hair Pirates 518 535.
His biological family remained separate from the family he chose. His father was Figarland Saint Garling, and his twin brother, Figarland Shamrock, became commander of the World Government’s Holy Knights. Shanks felt little attachment to his biological father and did not consider blood ties an obligation overriding his other relationships 534 557.
Luffy’s Childhood
Shanks knew Luffy as a child and gave him the straw hat that became his most treasured possession. Luffy grew up admiring him and wanting to become a great pirate like him 12 526.
Luffy also ate the Devil Fruit Shanks had obtained with considerable difficulty. Shanks knew its identity as the fruit of Sun God Nika, although Luffy later challenged his teasing claim that he had intended to eat it himself 529.
Shanks lost an arm before his first present-day appearance. He later described that sacrifice as a bet on the new era, which Benn Beckman recalled when discussing Luffy’s rise 36 567.
The Destruction of Elegia
During Uta’s childhood, Tot Musica manipulated her into releasing it through the Sing-Sing Fruit. The monster devastated Elegia before the Red Hair Pirates managed to suppress it. Uta’s youth, and her inability to sustain too much power, helped make its suppression possible 521.
Believing the truth would be too cruel for Uta, Shanks concealed her involvement and publicly claimed that his crew had destroyed the kingdom. Uta remained on Elegia, separated from the crew and unaware of what had actually happened 515 521.
Appearance
- Red hair and facial scars distinguish Shanks from his twin, Shamrock, whose face is unscarred and whose hair sweeps upward 557.
- A missing arm prompts Hawk-Eyes to decline another duel with him 36.
- A scar inflicted by Blackbeard serves as Xia Chen’s warning to Ace about underestimating Blackbeard 80.
- Gryphon at his waist is his principal weapon 215.
- A smaller build than Kaido makes him a more difficult target when combined with his superior Observation Haki 530.
Personality
Shanks is playful with friends and comfortable being mocked by his crew. He laughs at Xia Chen’s false claim to be his nephew and jokingly accepts the relationship after learning about it. Later, his theatrical threat to cut Yasopp in half falls flat because the crew knows he has no intention of following through 37 535.
He takes pride in Luffy’s growth without abandoning their familiar teasing. Their emotional reunion quickly becomes a brawl when Luffy demands to be addressed as “Lord Luffy,” but Shanks subsequently welcomes the chance to test Luffy’s full strength 525 529.
Shanks also places considerable importance on political stability. At Marineford, he argues that destroying the Navy would expose civilians to unchecked piracy and defends the World Government as necessary to the balance of the seas. Xia Chen accepts the concern about the Navy but rejects his defense of the Government 214.
His affection for Uta outweighs his attachment to his blood relatives. After Xia Chen saves her, Shanks relinquishes his grievances over Marineford—including the death of his biological father—and explicitly values his adopted daughter more than a father for whom he felt nothing 534.
Abilities & Skills
Conqueror’s Haki
Shanks is hailed as the man with the strongest Conqueror’s Haki when he confronts Xia Chen at Marineford 215.
- His Haki initially exceeds Xia Chen’s, although Xia Chen can withstand their direct clash 215.
- Xia Chen first estimates that it lies beyond the top tier, then identifies it as likely king level after reaching that level himself 215 229.
- Rayleigh considers Shanks’s Haki slightly stronger than Xia Chen’s initial king-level display, but acknowledges that Xia Chen surpasses him after six months 267.
- He coats Gryphon in Conqueror’s Haki alongside Armament Haki to penetrate Xia Chen’s exceptionally hard battlefield 530.
- Divine Departure consumes Conqueror’s Haki, limiting how freely he can repeat it during an extended fight 217.
Observation Haki
Shanks uses predictive Observation Haki to defend against fast attacks and avoid unexpected strikes 530.
- He foresees Nika-form Luffy’s opening attack early enough to position Gryphon defensively 530.
- He anticipates and evades an attack launched through the ground using Luffy’s awakened power 530.
- Luffy judges Shanks’s Observation Haki to be a level above his own 530.
Armament Haki
Shanks reinforces Gryphon with Armament Haki for both blocking and offensive applications 529 530.
- He blocks Luffy’s King Kong Gun without moving his feet on Xia Chen’s reinforced battlefield 529.
- Armament Haki alone does not let him drive Gryphon into that battlefield to arrest his backward flight; adding Conqueror’s Haki succeeds 530.
Swordsmanship and Divine Departure
Shanks fights with Gryphon at close range and projects powerful flying slashes over a distance 216 530.
- Divine Departure cleaves Xia Chen’s stone fist in two, damaging a form that Akainu and the others had failed to scratch. Xia Chen immediately repairs the injury with newly created rock 216.
- His attack power nearly matches Xia Chen’s Stone Monkey Form, but his inferior defenses prevent him from winning a prolonged exchange 217.
- He releases dense barrages of flying slashes and places attacks along Luffy’s anticipated escape route 530.
- His cutting attacks remain dangerous to Nika-form Luffy, whose resistance to blunt blows does not provide the same protection against blades 530.
Overall Combat Standing
- No Devil Fruit ability: Shanks concentrates on Haki and swordsmanship; Xia Chen regards him as the most accomplished Haki user he has encountered at that point 345.
- Against Xia Chen: He can contest Stone Monkey Form’s attacks, but loses their Marineford fight because he cannot match its durability 217.
- Against Luffy: Their later spar ends without a declared winner. Shanks holds the advantage for most of it, with Luffy acknowledging that he trails Shanks in all three types of Haki 534.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Gryphon — Shanks’s sword, used for Divine Departure, flying slashes, defense, and Haki-coated attacks 215 216 530.
- Red Force — The Red Hair Pirates’ ship, brought alongside the Thousand Sunny during the Elegia reunion 525 534.
- Straw hat — Formerly belonged to Shanks before he gave it to Luffy 12.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Xia Chen’s Supposed Uncle
Xia Chen falsely claims to be Shanks’s nephew to persuade Hawk-Eyes to fight him. When Hawk-Eyes later brings both Luffy’s and Xia Chen’s wanted posters to Shanks, Shanks is delighted by Luffy’s debut and amused to discover his supposed relative 26 36 37.
Rather than taking offense, Shanks jokingly accepts Xia Chen as his nephew and expresses interest in meeting him. When they finally meet, Xia Chen denies the claim, and both playfully blame Hawk-Eyes 37 214.
Intervention at Marineford
Shanks arrives to ask Xia Chen to spare the captured Navy and World Government leaders. When his appeal to the balance of the seas fails, he draws Gryphon and challenges Xia Chen. His officers also attack, but Xia Chen repels them, leaving Shanks to fight alone 214 215.
Despite inflicting damage with Divine Departure and matching Xia Chen’s attack power, Shanks cannot overcome Stone Monkey Form’s regeneration and defenses. After taking a heavy punch, he sheathes Gryphon and turns to negotiation 216 217.
He offers information from a centuries-old stone tablet about a powerful Devil Fruit. Its location clue reads 218:
“Above the dark tower, the gate to the underworld, the waterfall of blood, the valley of swift winds, the palace of the king!” 218
Xia Chen initially releases the captives, then returns after Saint Nusjuro vows revenge. He blocks Shanks and his companions behind a rock wall and kills six wounded captives. Shanks confronts him over the agreement, but ultimately withdraws with his crew 218 219.
Reunion on Elegia
Shanks rushes to Elegia out of concern for Uta and leaps aboard the Thousand Sunny upon spotting her in Xia Chen’s arms. After confirming that she is merely asleep, he thanks Xia Chen and later gives him a deep bow for saving her 524 525.
His reunion with Luffy develops into a crew-wide sparring match. Xia Chen supplies a reinforced battlefield to prevent the fighting from destroying Elegia, allowing Shanks to test Luffy’s Nika Form without the same concern for collateral damage 525 526 527 529 530.
The crews stop without settling Shanks and Luffy’s match. Uta chooses to return as the Red Hair Pirates’ singer, and Shanks declares that he will pursue the One Piece himself. Before departing, he asks Luffy to thank Xia Chen again and lets go of his lingering resentment over Marineford 534.
Final Race for Pirate King
Shamrock’s attack on Amazon Lily reveals Shanks’s twin brother and Celestial Dragon parentage. Shamrock blames Shanks for failing to save their father from Xia Chen 557.
Later, Shanks approaches Elbaf as one of the Three Emperors and a final contender for Pirate King alongside Luffy and Kaido. He recalls a previous visit when his crew dealt with Loki and looks forward to competing with Luffy 567.
