Background / History

Training and Admiral duties

Aokiji trained under Zephyr and retained his teacher’s warning against relying excessively on Devil Fruit powers. He also learned elements of Garp’s Iron Fist fighting style, which Zephyr recognizes when they later fight 319 320.

As an Admiral, Aokiji gains authority but finds his personal freedom restricted. His experience helps him understand why Garp repeatedly refused promotion; although Aokiji dislikes the Celestial Dragons, he considers himself unable to speak freely about World Government affairs 92.

Alabasta: capturing Xia Chen

Smoker brings Aokiji to a restaurant in Nanohana, immediately alarming Xia Chen and Ace. Aokiji refuses to let the pirates leave. When Luffy attacks him, he freezes Luffy’s arm and begins freezing his body until Xia Chen intervenes with Ryuo Haki 80 81.

Xia Chen and Ace remain behind while the other Straw Hats escape. Aokiji recognizes Xia Chen’s Internal Destruction and judges his Haki stronger than that of most Marine Vice Admirals. After fighting both opponents without injury, he freezes Ace and what appears to be Xia Chen with Ice Age 81 82.

The frozen Xia Chen is actually a clone. The real Xia Chen ambushes Aokiji and draws blood, then frees Ace. To prevent their escape, Aokiji encloses the battlefield in an ice dome with walls two thousand meters thick. Xia Chen and his clone break through it with Hakai, allowing Ace to escape, but Aokiji concentrates on Xia Chen and pierces him with ice spears 83 84.

Aokiji ultimately captures Xia Chen and leaves Alabasta aboard a Marine warship. Their battle destroys Nanohana, leaving ice that barely begins melting after more than a day under the desert sun 85 87 92.

During the voyage, Aokiji investigates Xia Chen and learns that he has never killed a civilian. Impressed by him, he provides unusually comfortable treatment and offers to speak to Sengoku about recruitment and potentially avoiding a prison sentence. Xia Chen rejects serving the Celestial Dragons, thanks Aokiji for his hospitality, and escapes by switching places with his clone 92.

Water 7: the joint capture operation

Aokiji joins Garp, Kuma, CP0, and CP9 in an operation against Xia Chen and Robin. As Xia Chen overwhelms their forces, Aokiji realizes the mission is likely to fail and worries about the consequences if Xia Chen participates in Whitebeard’s attempt to rescue Ace. He also warns Garp when Xia Chen prepares Hakai 161 163.

After Xia Chen is struck into the sea and the World Government orders the Straw Hats’ arrest, Aokiji recognizes Garp’s distress over Luffy. Government oversight prevents the Marines from quietly letting the crew go, but Aokiji resolves to do everything he can to keep Luffy alive 166 167.

Marineford: a reversal in strength

At Marineford, Aokiji attacks Xia Chen despite their earlier rapport, explaining that they remain on opposing sides and that the World Government considers Xia Chen extremely dangerous. Xia Chen breaks his ice attacks and kicks him into the sea. Aokiji freezes the inner bay as he lands, emerges bleeding, and realizes that Xia Chen has grown stronger yet again 184.

Aokiji later freezes an incoming tsunami and the surrounding sea, reconnecting the fragmented battlefield into one large frozen surface. After freezing Diamond Jozu, he tries to support Sengoku’s battle against Xia Chen, but Ace intercepts him and forces him into another fight 200 205.

Xia Chen ultimately chooses to spare Aokiji and Kizaru because neither fought with the intention of killing him. At the war’s end, the two Admirals flee when Xia Chen approaches, only for him to catch them and stage his apparent death before them 214 219.

After the Summit War

Aokiji survives the war with injuries worse than Kizaru’s. His repeated defeats by Xia Chen make him increasingly disengaged from Headquarters discussions, to Sengoku’s frustration. Aokiji had dominated Xia Chen in Alabasta, lost decisively at Water 7, and been overwhelmed at Marineford—all within less than two months 234 254 255.

He remains an Admiral after Ryokugyu replaces Akainu. Ryokugyu’s own assessment after fighting Aokiji and Kizaru places him below both of them 254 255.

Secon Island: fighting his teacher

Sengoku assigns Aokiji and Kizaru to guard the two remaining End Points against Zephyr. Garp accompanies Aokiji in the hope of persuading his former colleague to abandon his plan 318.

When persuasion fails, Garp leaves the fight to Aokiji rather than kill Zephyr himself. Aokiji is equally reluctant, but understands that destroying the End Points would devastate civilians while doing little to stop the strongest pirates. He therefore accepts that protecting the island takes priority over his feelings for his teacher 319.

Aokiji initially emphasizes martial arts to give Zephyr one final close-combat bout. After freezing Ain, Binz, and the other followers who rush to intervene, he abandons his restraint and mortally wounds Zephyr with his ice powers. He promises not to kill the followers, while making clear that their eventual imprisonment will depend on the circumstances 320.

Elegia deployment

Aokiji deploys near Elegia alongside Ryokugyu and CP0 as Uta’s Sing-Sing World traps over half the world’s population. When Xia Chen arrives and insists on handling Uta himself, Aokiji decides that the Marines will stand down and observe 518.

Appearance

  • Build: Very tall and somewhat thin 80.
  • Usual demeanor: Relaxed and seemingly easygoing; his expression becomes serious when he recognizes Xia Chen as a substantial threat 81 82.

Personality

Aokiji is habitually laid-back, often maintaining a calm voice even while freezing opponents or preventing their escape. His dry humor includes describing a two-thousand-meter-thick ice dome as “not very” thick and answering Sengoku’s request for his opinion with a joke about sitting down 81 84 254.

He distinguishes between a pirate’s criminal classification and their actual conduct. Learning that Xia Chen has never killed civilians strengthens his interest in recruiting him, and he treats the captive generously. Nevertheless, personal admiration does not stop him from opposing Xia Chen when their duties and allegiances conflict 92 184.

His compassion is constrained by responsibility rather than absent. He wants to preserve Luffy’s life for Garp’s sake and hesitates to kill Zephyr, but ultimately fights his teacher to prevent mass civilian casualties 167 319 320.

Repeated exposure to Xia Chen’s rapid growth makes Aokiji more cautious and less willing to involve himself in unwinnable conflicts. His increasing passivity after Marineford becomes pronounced enough for Sengoku to openly berate him and Kizaru 254 255.

Abilities & Skills

Ice-based Logia powers

Aokiji can transform his body into ice, produce cold air, create weapons and barriers, and freeze people or vast stretches of seawater 82 184 200.

Technique Effect and documented use
Ice Age Rapidly freezes large areas and powerful opponents. Immobilizes Ace and Xia Chen’s clone, later freezes Jozu, and stops Zephyr’s followers 82 205 320.
Ice dome An application of Ice Age that encloses the battlefield in walls two thousand meters thick 83 84.
Ice Block: Pheasant Beak Creates a giant ice bird launched at an opponent; used against Ace and Zephyr 82 320.
Ice Saber Forms an ice sword capable of meeting Xia Chen’s Haki-coated staff 82.
Ice Time Capsule Fires cold-air projectiles that freeze the area where they land 82.
Ice Block: Two Thorn Spears Launches ice spears at Xia Chen at Marineford 184.
Ice Ball Fires five pillars of ice from his palm toward Xia Chen 184.
Ice Block: Partisan Forms multiple airborne ice spears and launches them at Zephyr 319.
Ice Glove Turns his fist into ice for a powerful close-range punch 319.
  • Elemental evasion: Combines ice transformation with Observation Haki to alter threatened body parts before attacks connect, making even Haki-assisted attacks difficult to land 82.
  • Persistent freezing: Ice left in Nanohana barely begins melting after more than a day in the sun 87.
  • Battlefield control: Freezes a tsunami and surrounding seawater to create a continuous battlefield 200.
  • Limits: Xia Chen’s Ryuo can break his freezing, while Hakai breaches his ice dome. His ice walls can also be destroyed by sufficiently powerful flames 81 83 84 205.
  • Noncombat use: Personally chills Xia Chen’s drinks during his captivity 92.

Haki

  • Observation Haki: Described as top-tier during the Alabasta battle; supports his anticipatory elemental evasion and allows him to overhear nearby quiet conversations 82 83.
  • Careful sensing: Can distinguish Xia Chen’s clone by its lack of a living aura, but only after deliberately examining it 83.
  • Armament Haki: Coats both arms to block Xia Chen’s surprise overhead attack when there is no time to transform 83.
  • Technical recognition: Identifies Xia Chen’s Internal Destruction and evaluates his Haki against Marine Vice Admirals 82.

Martial arts and physical strength

Aokiji supplements his Devil Fruit with close combat, retaining Zephyr’s teachings and incorporating elements of Garp’s Iron Fist 320.

  • Uses Soru to evade Xia Chen’s Hakai, though its speed and range still force him to defend and leave him injured by the shock waves 84.
  • Overpowers the aging, injured Zephyr through superior physical capabilities despite Zephyr’s greater martial arts mastery 320.
  • Fights Xia Chen and Ace simultaneously while initially taking no injuries and showing far less fatigue than either opponent 82.
  • Is assessed by Xia Chen as only slightly below Akainu in overall strength, despite Akainu’s greater raw physical power 208.

Life Return

  • Reduces his oxygen requirements inside the sealed ice dome after Ace’s flames consume much of the available air 84.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Den Den Mushi — Carries one to contact Smoker after apparently subduing Xia Chen and Ace 82.

  • Seastone Handcuffs — Used to restrain Xia Chen aboard the ship; remain behind when Xia Chen escapes through his clone-switching ability 92.

Relationships

  • Xia Chen — Recurring opponent and prospective recruit. Their time aboard Aokiji’s ship develops genuine mutual regard, but neither abandons his allegiance 92 184.
  • Zephyr — Former teacher whose lessons Aokiji continues to value. Their final battle pits his gratitude and affection against his obligation to protect civilians 319 320.

  • Ain and Binz — Zephyr’s followers, whom Aokiji freezes but promises to spare at his teacher’s request 320.

Notable Quotes

“Not very. Only two thousand meters!”
— Describing the thickness of his ice dome 84.

“I don't want to kill my teacher either!”

Trivia

  • Akainu’s death at Marineford prevents his later duel with Aokiji. Consequently, Punk Hazard lacks the divided ice-and-fire landscape Xia Chen remembers from the original story 321.
