Personality
Otto is practical and observant, turning confusion into questions and immediate action. Learning about Return by Death makes him reconsider Subaru’s seemingly impossible judgments and occasional pained expressions. Later, he independently checks the passage of time during playback and establishes that watching the screen consumes comparatively little time outside it 2 36.
His compassion does not amount to unconditional forgiveness. After witnessing his younger brother’s murder, he acknowledges that the Subaru responsible is not the present Subaru, but refuses to dismiss the death as merely a possible future. Once he understands the killer’s motive, he distinguishes understanding Subaru’s desperation from approving his actions—and insists that he cannot forgive on his brother’s behalf 4 7 8.
Otto’s courage is most visible when he is frightened and outmatched. His Gluttony Route counterpart rallies survivors while injured, confronts a despairing Garfiel despite their enormous difference in strength, and continues searching for an escape after Subaru has blocked his options. As an observer, Otto meets the praise this earns with uncomfortable complaints rather than self-congratulation 14 15 16.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Protection of Soul of Language
Otto can communicate with small creatures, using them as potential sources of information and messengers 15 16.
- Searches for rats, waterbirds, and insects to send messages beyond the flooded city and locate possible routes to survival 15.
- Continues checking individual hiding places even after receiving no responses 15 16.
- Depends on having creatures available to contact: Gluttony Route Subaru neutralizes this option by dealing with the city’s small animals beforehand 15 16.
Crisis Leadership
Otto can organize frightened people into coordinated action even without a complete solution. Ram identifies this ability to restore order as the reason he is especially dangerous to Subaru’s destructive plans 11.
- Directs survivors toward higher ground and warns them away from collapsed roads 14.
- Orders the rescue of injured people and the collection of planks, doors, tables, and other floating materials 14.
- Restores Garfiel’s determination by urging him to save whoever is immediately within reach rather than give up because he cannot save everyone 14.
- Identifies the tower from which Shaula is attacking while Garfiel protects him 14.
Tactical Analysis
Otto recognizes both an opponent’s usable resources and the preparations needed to deny others their strengths 15 38 40.
- Reconstructs Gluttony Subaru’s plan: flood the city, position Shaula on high ground, draw Garfiel away, and eliminate Otto’s animal contacts 15.
- Explains the strategic value of rescuing Elsa despite her history of killing Subaru 38.
- Warns that a Subaru unconstrained by morality could accumulate increasingly dangerous tools, including Witch Cultists, Elsa, and Meili 40.
- Recognizes that the White Whale’s memory erasure is a threat beyond its physical strength 45.
Relationships
- Natsuki Subaru — Trusted companion. Otto’s concern for Subaru deepens after learning about Return by Death, but he firmly opposes treating death and murder as acceptable steps toward a reset. Subaru later praises his habit of noticing what matters most 2 7 8 36.
- Regin Suwen / Reikin / Regen — Younger brother. Watching Shaula kill him on Subaru’s orders leaves Otto grief-stricken; he subsequently refuses to offer forgiveness in his brother’s place 3 4 8.
- Garfiel — Trusted ally. In the Gluttony Route, Otto rekindles his resolve, and Garfiel shields him from Shaula’s attacks. The observing Garfiel later states plainly that both he and Subaru trust Otto 14 36.
- Ram — Recognizes Otto’s ability beneath their argumentative exchanges. She correctly names him as the person Gluttony Subaru considers most troublesome, explaining that he would quietly repair the chaos Subaru creates 11.
- Anastasia — Recognizes the significance of Subaru’s precautions against him. She concludes that leaving Otto even a small usable resource could allow him to force an opening 15 16.
- Reinhard — Acknowledges that Otto’s ability to make people act again amid disaster is exceptional, even though it is less conspicuous than combat strength 11.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Becoming an Observer
The light screen adds Otto as an observer while he is elsewhere and synchronizes the basic records of Return by Death. Initially suspecting an attack, he soon becomes more concerned with whether Subaru is safe. The revelation gives him a disturbing explanation for Subaru’s past successes and signs of distress 2.
As the playback shows Subaru conversing with absent companions, Otto suggests that the real people may no longer exist and that only readable or simulated records remain. His younger brother’s subsequent appearance turns the disturbing future into a personal tragedy 3.
His Brother’s Death and Subaru’s Motive
Otto watches Regin recognize Subaru and offer assistance, only for Subaru to order Shaula to kill him. Although Otto knows this is not the present Subaru’s act, the sight leaves him nauseated and briefly unable to think clearly. He regains his composure and asks the observers to investigate why the murder occurred 3 4.
The broadcast then reveals the village massacre and Subaru’s attempt to reconstruct his lost identity through Books of the Dead. Otto comes to understand the motive without excusing it. He argues that victims are not numbers and that a later reset would not erase the psychological weight of committing those acts 5 6 7 8.
Water Gate City: The Most Troublesome Opponent
A screen question confirms Otto—not Reinhard—as the person Gluttony Subaru considers most troublesome. Ram explains that raw power is not the issue: Otto would work outside Subaru’s view to get people moving and restore order 11.
The ensuing footage demonstrates that threat. Amid the flood, Otto organizes survivors and pulls Garfiel out of despair. Garfiel protects him from Shaula’s beams, allowing Otto to identify her firing position. Their resistance collapses when Subaru’s appearance distracts Garfiel and Shaula strikes him into the flooded ruins 14.
Otto still attempts to contact animals for help, only to learn that Subaru has already neutralized them. Subaru reveals that the entire operation was devised with Otto as its first target. After piecing together the preparations, Otto denounces him as a fake; Shaula’s white-light attack kills him 15.
The observing Otto is unsettled by receiving extraordinary praise immediately before witnessing his counterpart’s death. Other observers recognize that he continued searching for something useful even after his last apparent hope was removed 16.
Rewind and Continued Observation
The screen eventually reveals that Gluttony Subaru’s reset point lies after the murders, making his intended restoration impossible. The present Subaru uses a one-use rewind reward to return that world line to an earlier point in the Sage’s Tower 22 23 24.
Otto continues participating in subsequent broadcasts. His timekeeping reassures the tower group that the playback is not consuming enough outside time for their enemies to arrive. When Subaru recounts his own repeated deaths, Otto admits that analyzing the dangerous versions on-screen has distracted him from how much the Subaru beside them has already suffered 36 41.
During the playback of Regulus’s death, Otto condemns Subaru’s deliberate enjoyment of the killing while acknowledging that the successful plan may have followed many fatal failures 49.
The Unnamed Gray-Haired Man
A later broadcast shows a gray-haired man whose face, voice, and manner of speaking identify him to the observers as Otto, although he does not give his name. He quietly handles Julius’s body after Julius dies from poisoned wine, then asks Subaru whether there is another commission. Subaru replies that obstacles remain and that he will have more work for him 50.
