| Occupation/Role | Disciple of the Great Sage Flugel; guardian of the Sage’s Tower 10 24 |
| Status | Alive in the main timeline 35 41 |
| Time Spent Waiting | Four hundred years awaiting her master 22 26 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 1 |
Background / History
Shaula is Flugel’s disciple, rather than the Great Sage himself. She spent four hundred years in the Sage’s Tower, following orders to wait, guard the tower, and attack intruders. When Subaru’s group arrived, she mistook Subaru for Flugel and addressed him as “Master” 10 24.
Her long isolation shaped her attachment to him. Shaula describes days so repetitive that she nearly forgot what she was waiting for, but treats Subaru’s arrival as proof that she waited for the right person. Even when he questions whether he is truly her master, she refuses to reconsider 19.
Appearance
- Hair: Long, described as black in the Gluttony Route scenes and dark brown when she approaches the green room 18 20 27.
- Build: Voluptuous, with an ample bust 5 6.
- Expressions and mannerisms: Her eyes curve when she smiles; she frequently leans close, tilts her head, and eagerly approaches whenever Subaru calls 18.
Personality
Shaula is boisterous, physically affectionate, and easily delighted by Subaru’s attention. She seeks hugs, head pats, praise, shared meals, and naps beside him. Early on, she embraces him without waiting for permission and treats even a complaint about her behavior as a sign of affection 2 6 19.
Her devotion initially leaves little room for independent moral judgment. In the Gluttony Route, she kills at Subaru’s command and interprets his promise to kill her last as proof that she is his favorite. Being needed and allowed to remain beside him matters more to her than her own survival 19 20.
That obedience is not absolute. When Subaru begs her to kill him, she refuses, restrains him, and comforts him instead. After receiving Human Heart, she begins recognizing remorse, personal wishes, and the desire to protect someone as feelings of her own rather than extensions of an order 22 26.
Her later affection becomes more considerate. She asks before hugging Subaru, adjusts her strength to avoid hurting him, notices his companions’ concern, and remembers practical lessons about caring for him 27 28.
Abilities & Skills
White-Light Attacks
Shaula fires lethal beams of light and serves as the principal fighting force behind Gluttony Route Subaru’s plans 3 15 18.
- Kills Regin Suwen with a beam, then kills his charging ground dragon 3.
- Fires toward Felt to force Reinhard to abandon his confrontation with Subaru and rescue her 15.
- Her support allows Subaru to escape Reinhard, but does not give them a demonstrated means of killing him 15 21.
Physical Strength and Mobility
Shaula can carry Subaru, make powerful leaps, and physically restrain him 15 22.
- Moves Water Gate City’s control towers as part of Subaru’s flooding plan 11.
- Returns after defeating Garfiel; Subaru subsequently states that Garfiel has been killed 15.
- Carries Subaru away by leaping high into the sky 15.
- Holds Subaru securely enough to stop him from striking his head against the floor 22.
Book Retrieval
Shaula helps locate Books of the Dead in the tower’s library, although she initially admits that searching for them is not her specialty 6.
- Retrieves victims’ books for Gluttony Route Subaru’s attempt to reconstruct his former identity 6 8.
- Finds Subaru’s own book after he teaches the group to recognize his name in the writing of his original world 32.
- Explicitly remembers the written form of his name so that she can find it again 32.
Human Heart
The light screen awards Shaula Human Heart, accompanied by the declaration, “You are Shaula. A person true to your name” 26.
- Enables her to recognize her own wishes, affection, distress, and desire to refuse harmful orders 26.
- Brings an emotional understanding of the people she has hurt, leaving her unwilling to continue killing merely because she is commanded to do so 26.
- Is followed by more careful behavior toward Subaru and greater attention to the feelings of those around him 27 28.
Relationships
- Natsuki Subaru — Calls him “Master” and loves him above anyone else. Their relationship develops from unquestioning service toward acknowledged affection and a protective role that includes stopping him from harming himself or others 19 25 26.
- Flugel — Her original master and the actual Great Sage. Shaula’s mistaken identification of Subaru as Flugel explains her initial allegiance to him 10.
- Emilia — Rejects the idea that Shaula must prove companionship through death. Later helps her learn how to care for Subaru and recognizes her growing attentiveness 21 27 28.
- Beatrice / Betty — Shares concern for Subaru’s safety and teaches Shaula practical boundaries, including hugging him gently and bringing drinking water in a cup rather than a basin 27 28.
- Ram — Shaula recognizes that Ram’s harsh words conceal concern for Subaru. Subaru entrusts Ram’s safety, along with Emilia’s and Betty’s, to her 28.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Return by Death’s Exposure
Shaula is among those present when the light screen exposes Subaru’s Return by Death. She initially praises the ability, then apologizes as the others confront the suffering it entails 1.
Gluttony Route: Subaru’s Accomplice
In the future shown by the screen, Shaula travels with an amnesiac Subaru whose apparent companions are illusions. Her walking straight through the image of Emilia reveals that only Shaula is physically beside him 2.
She kills Regin Suwen on Subaru’s orders and later massacres the inhabitants of his village while Subaru waits at its entrance. Back at the tower, she retrieves their Books of the Dead so he can search their memories for information about his former self 3 5 6.
Her strength also makes the attack on Water Gate City possible. She assists with the flooding, defeats Garfiel, and fires at Felt to draw Reinhard away, allowing herself and Subaru to escape 11 15.
The Promise to Be Last
After recognizing how indispensable Shaula has been, Subaru asks what she wants once his work is finished. Her answer consists of ordinary moments together: eating, receiving praise, having her head patted, and napping beside him 18 19.
Subaru instead tells her that he will kill her at the end. Shaula joyfully interprets this as a promise that she will remain with him longer than anyone else and be personally chosen by him. They seal the agreement by linking little fingers 19.
The observers conclude that Subaru cannot complete his plan because he cannot kill Reinhard or obtain the missing memories associated with Rem. This leaves Shaula waiting for an end that may never arrive. Emilia and Beatrice reject the idea that her happiness makes such an arrangement acceptable 20 21.
Refusing Subaru’s Death
When Return by Death brings Subaru back only to the point after their promise, he discovers that the murders cannot be undone from that checkpoint. He injures himself and begs Shaula to kill him in the hope of returning further back 22.
Shaula disobeys him for the first time. She holds him, refuses to help him die, and repeatedly assures him that he does not have to cry alone 22.
Changing the Gluttony Route
The main-timeline Subaru enters the branch and uses World Rewind to reach an earlier point. He realizes that Shaula’s willingness to listen to “Master” can make her a safeguard against Gluttony rather than merely the person who carries out killings 24.
Following his intervention, the amnesiac Subaru explicitly asks Shaula to stop him if he issues dangerous orders or tries to solve his problems through murder. She agrees to restrain him, follow him into danger, and remain beside him when he cries. They leave the library to seek help from Emilia and the others 25.
Learning to Act for Herself
The observing Shaula receives Human Heart and begins understanding the distinction between obedience and her own desires. She declares that she wants Subaru not to cry alone and identifies her love as something she personally wishes to express. Subaru thanks her and promises not to dismiss those feelings as a joke 26.
Afterward, she approaches him cautiously, asks permission to hug him, and learns how to care for him during his recovery. Subaru also gives her responsibility for leading the group through the tower and watching over Emilia, Betty, and Ram—not only himself 27 28.
Finding Subaru’s Name
During the search for Subaru’s Book of the Dead, Shaula finds the volume bearing the unfamiliar characters he has shown the group. Before handing it over, she confirms that it is the book capable of bringing him back 32.
She promises to watch over him while he reads it. When Subaru returns with his memories restored, he thanks her for finding him, and she embraces him in relief 33 35.
