Background / History

Hundred Thousand Mountains

Li Dan first appears training with the Li Lineage’s younger disciples in the Hundred Thousand Mountains. When Li Yaoyao accuses the absent Li Xiao of fleeing danger, Li Dan rebukes her and insists that the lineage’s strength rests on its disciples refusing to sow internal division. His words earn Li Xiao’s approval as he listens unseen nearby 5.

When Pan Jinlian’s group ambushes them, Li Dan prepares to hold off the Middle Emperor opponent while Li Yaoyao evacuates the others. Li Xiao intervenes before the confrontation develops, killing the attackers and revealing that he has reached the Saint Realm 5.

Li Dan then accompanies Li Xiao into the cave containing the mountains’ dragon vein. He rashly attacks its flood dragon guardian and is knocked into a wall. After Li Xiao subdues the creature and transforms it into Long Aotian, Li Dan witnesses its appointment as the Li Lineage’s guardian beast. Deeper in the cave, he identifies a Vermilion Fruit tree and receives its fruit to distribute among the disciples 6 7.

After Li Xiao uproots the dragon vein and settles the resulting beast unrest, Li Dan gathers the disciples for their return home. Asked about Li Xiao’s newfound strength, he declares that the young master is now invincible 7 8.

God-Worshipping Mountain

Li Xiao selects Li Dan to climb God-Worshipping Mountain in his place. Before the mountain opens, Xiao Huohuo provokes Li Xiao, who kills his Ancient Emperor protector and orders Li Dan to finish Xiao Huohuo. Li Dan executes him with a punch to the forehead 11 12.

On the mountain, Li Dan accepts Bai Xiaolin’s challenge for the pills inside a stone temple. Their fight lasts several hours before Li Dan wins through Startled Swan Steps. Unimpressed by the temple’s unpatterned pills, he gives them to his companions and offers the injured Bai Xiaolin a nine-pattern Origin-Returning Pill. Bai Xiaolin subsequently follows him toward the summit 14 15.

At the summit, Li Dan remains standing while the other participants kneel before a golden phantom. He receives one of five supposed divine blessings, alongside representatives of the Four Symbols Sects. Li Xiao later discovers that the blessing has left a concealed golden marker inside him and erases it 15 16.

Xiao Dushui hires the Shadow Killing Pavilion to capture Li Xiao and Li Dan alive in revenge for his son’s death. During the attack, Li Dan shoves Li Xiao aside and takes the incoming strike. A protective jade slip stops the sword, although the impact still injures him. Li Xiao kills the attackers and departs to confront their organization 15 16.

Service to Li Xiao

At the Li Lineage estate, Li Dan attends Li Xiao while he fishes, pours his tea, and reports developments such as Long Aotian’s cultivation and Li Xiao’s growing reputation. Li Xiao also entrusts him with watching Li Tong 20 33.

Li Dan delivers baptism-ceremony invitations from the Azure Dragon, White Tiger, and Vermilion Bird Sects. During the subsequent journey to the White Tiger Sect, their shuttle is attacked, and Li Xiao orders him to preserve the bodies of the fallen Li Lineage disciples 40 41.

At the White Tiger Sect, Li Dan helps Li Xiao leave Li Kuangfeng and Nangong Meng alone to discuss their past. Later, acting on Li Xiao’s warning, he gathers every visiting Li Lineage disciple outside the sect’s gates before the White Tiger Consciousness rampages. None of those evacuated are killed or injured. He returns with them after the danger passes and eventually boards the homebound shuttle 44 45 47 48.

Personality

Li Dan places strong importance on loyalty to the Li Lineage and Li Xiao. He defends Li Xiao against accusations of cowardice, volunteers to protect fellow disciples against a stronger opponent, and instinctively puts himself between Li Xiao and an assassin’s sword. His commitment also extends to the lineage’s reputation: he angrily offers to destroy a subordinate lineage that has targeted Li Xiao 5 16 31.

His devotion is often expressed through enthusiastic flattery and comic bravado. He calls the flood dragon a “little crawling bug” before being swatted aside, then blames his defeat on an ambush. He resents Long Aotian’s praise of Li Xiao as competition for his own place, yet remains capable of skepticism—privately rejecting Li Xiao’s claim that fishing counts as cultivation 6 7 20.

Although he initially questions whether Xiao Huohuo’s execution was too cruel, he accepts Li Xiao’s argument that weakness would have left them dead instead. His generosity is shaped by the exceptional resources available to him: ordinary high-grade pills no longer impress him, and he freely hands them to others 13 14.

Abilities & Skills

Mountain-Shaking Fist

A fist technique associated with the Li Lineage, used in his duel against Bai Xiaolin 14.

  • Meets Bai Xiaolin’s white-tiger-powered punch directly, though Li Dan is forced back a step 14.
  • Earns praise from Bai Xiaolin during their exchange 14.

Startled Swan Steps

A Saint-grade movement technique supplied to the Li Lineage by Li Xiao 14.

  • Allows Li Dan to evade Bai Xiaolin’s finishing attack and reposition behind him 14.
  • Creates the opening for the punch that ends their hours-long duel 14.

Spiritual Power and Combat Limits

  • At Middle Emperor, he can fight Bai Xiaolin, another Middle Emperor cultivator, for several hours before both approach exhaustion 14.
  • At Spirit Transformation, he is severely outmatched by the Early Saint flood dragon; its roar makes his ears bleed, and its tail strike sends him crashing into a wall 6.
  • His protective jade slip blocks an assassin’s blade but does not prevent injury from the impact 16.

Equipment / Items

  • Protective jade slip — Given to him by Li Xiao before the mountain climb. It contains a trace of Li Xiao’s presence capable of withstanding a Peak Saint strike and later shields Li Dan during the assassination attempt 13 16.
  • Vermilion Fruits — Received from Li Xiao for distribution among the lineage’s disciples. The fruit is especially useful below the Emperor Realm and contributes to Li Dan’s rapid advancement 7 12.

  • Bai Xiaolin — Rival turned friendly companion after their duel on God-Worshipping Mountain. Li Dan later banters with him at the White Tiger Sect, unaware that Tang Xuan is controlling Bai Xiaolin’s body 14 15 43.
  • Long Aotian — Fellow follower of Li Xiao and a source of comic rivalry. Li Dan dislikes his ingratiating praise, while Long Aotian mocks Li Dan’s unfamiliarity with treasures and his pursuit of Li Tong’s snacks 7 20 38.
  • Li Tong — Placed under his watch by Li Xiao. Li Dan persuades her to share her spirit-pill candied hawthorn, earning a reprimand from Li Xiao for taking a child’s snack 33 38.
  • Li Yaoyao — Fellow Li Lineage disciple whom he rebukes for insulting Li Xiao. During the Pan Lineage ambush, he asks her to lead their companions to safety 5.
  • Xiao Dushui — Enemy who commissions Li Dan’s capture so that he can personally avenge Xiao Huohuo’s death 15.
