Background / History
Childhood and the Holy Lord
After accepting him as a disciple, Crazy Old Man’s unnamed master frequently left him in the care of the future Holy Lord of the Church of Justice. Traveling with the Holy Lord exposed him to unfamiliar places and experiences, and he retained vivid memories of their time together 87 150 383.
He remembered the Holy Lord as extraordinarily handsome, charitable, and often infuriating. Among his anecdotes were the Holy Lord confiscating his candy and eating it in front of him, killing enemies after allowing them to flee, and robbing wealthy merchants to help the poor. Although Crazy Old Man resisted his own master’s authority, he submitted to the Holy Lord’s discipline 87 470.
Injury and Seclusion
Twenty years before the main events, Crazy Old Man was caught in a scheme and led the charge against a massive beast tide to protect Great Xia. He suffered a grave injury that left his Dao Source severely damaged; according to Jin Changfeng’s understanding of his condition, he eventually had little lifespan remaining 88 475.
His son, daughter-in-law, and grandson all died, with his grandson dying while attending university. Left alone, he withdrew from public affairs, worked as a cemetery caretaker in Fortress No. 31, and spent his days drinking. His family’s three graves stood together in the cemetery near Plow Mountain 17 37 487.
He also rejected contact with old acquaintances. Wei Cangyue knew that his decision to live alone was serious and was surprised to discover that someone had begun cooking for him 40.
Appearance
Crazy Old Man is an elderly, short man with a nearly bald forehead, a beard, and deeply wrinkled eyes 18 79 169 296.
- Thinning hair: Frequently scratches or rubs his balding head 18 26.
- Beard: Twitches when he becomes angry; Wang Yao tugs it when they reunite 79 295.
- Usual accessories: Often carries a liquor bottle or flask; also uses a palm-leaf fan while reclining outside 170 291 382.
Personality
Crazy Old Man is abrasive, irreverent, and openly dismissive of formality. He tells respected visitors to stop interrupting his drinking and feels more comfortable with Jiang Fan’s insults than with deferential etiquette. He declares that he follows his own wishes rather than any claim to absolute fairness 64 76 90 291.
He is also stubborn and proud. He forces Jiang Fan through a discipleship ceremony, dislikes being called short, and repeatedly overexerts himself to demonstrate his strength despite knowing that his injured body cannot tolerate it. His difficulty learning the Holy Lord’s sword art embarrasses him enough that he avoids practicing where old acquaintances might see 79 105 296 499 500.
Beneath this behavior, he is lonely and deeply attached to Jiang Fan. Accepting a disciple visibly brightens him, and Jiang Fan’s invitation to accompany him to Fortress No. 1 nearly moves him to tears. He comes to cherish Jiang Fan as his own grandson and eventually regards him as his only remaining family 80 168 169 261 486.
His protectiveness does not always mean overriding Jiang Fan’s decisions. After initially warning him against Yuanwu, he persuades Yan Tianyang to respect the boy’s choice and arrange protection instead 154 166.
Abilities & Skills
Psychic Power
His Psychic Power vastly exceeds Jiang Fan’s during their early training and can suppress other Spirit Masters’ attempts to investigate him 79 105.
- Telekinesis and restraint: Forces Jiang Fan to kneel, returns a cup to his hand, and compels him to complete the discipleship ceremony 79.
- Psychic suppression: Crushes Ye Qizhen’s probing Psychic Power and later presses Jin Changfeng until he can barely breathe 79 476.
- Detection: Notices Jiang Fan’s sudden psychic growth and identifies a concealed Church of Justice emblem through psychic investigation 64 474.
- Remote force: Knocks Jin Changfeng away with an invisible shock wave 292.
Flight
He can fly without standing on an external object, unlike Jiang Fan’s earlier method of riding alloy weight rings 149.
- Launches into the sky and departs at tremendous speed after learning Jiang Fan is in danger 486.
- Can transport Jiang Fan while flying 498.
- Before his partial recovery, an injury flare-up causes him to cough blood and fall from the air during an attempted rescue 149.
Energy Suppression
He uses Psychic Power to stabilize Big Black after the dog absorbs dangerous power 152.
- Suppresses the restless energy inside Big Black, allowing his cracked skin to begin healing.
- Explicitly warns that suppression is not a complete solution: Big Black’s survival still depends on his own fortune 152.
Martial Knowledge and Instruction
He recognizes martial techniques, evaluates unusual breakthroughs, and advises Jiang Fan about training, Spirit Weapons, and dangerous factions 54 70 103 170.
- Supplies alloy weight rings for physical conditioning 37 104.
- Recognizes the sword technique contained in Jiang Fan’s Spirit Weapon as the Holy Lord’s creation 295.
- Warns Jiang Fan that dividing his attention among martial cultivation, Psychic Power, Soul Power, and body tempering risks overextending himself 285.
- Struggles to learn the Holy Lord’s sword art even after more than a hundred demonstrations. Jiang Fan’s simplified version finally makes it easier for him to practice 500 501.
Injury and Combat Limits
His damaged Dao Source prevents him from using his full strength reliably 88 105 331.
- Unrestrained Psychic Power aggravates his old injury 88 105 292.
- Admits that stealing Crimson Flame Phoenix blood essence from the Church of Justice is beyond his injured state, although he believes it would not be difficult if he were uninjured 331.
- After receiving the peach fruits, remains weak enough that Little Turtle knocks him back several hundred zhang despite his strongest defensive state 500.
- The narration states that Little Turtle would be no match for him in his prime 500.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Alloy weight rings: Gives Jiang Fan an F-grade pair originally made for his deceased grandson and later provides access to E-grade rings 37 104.
- Spatial ring: Presents Jiang Fan with a ring immediately after the discipleship ceremony in the chapter titled “Spatial ring” 80.
- Former S-rank Spirit Weapon: Previously owned one, but detonated it; the circumstances are not explained in the supplied account 170 492.
- Thousand Tribulations Saber: Says the Holy Lord gave it to him. The provided passages do not establish whether it was the Spirit Weapon he detonated 296.
- Peach fruits: Receives two from Jiang Fan to repair his Dao Source; accepts the second after Jiang Fan threatens to put it into his cooking 383.
- Liquor: Regularly drinks erguotou and eagerly accepts fine wine from visiting acquaintances 54 77 291.
