Background / History

Service to the Holy Lord

Little Turtle served as a contracted beast and trusted subordinate of the Holy Lord who founded the Church of Justice. He swore to protect his master throughout his life, die before him, and never allow him to lose a single hair while under his protection 248 385 456.

After the Holy Lord disappeared, Little Turtle, Peach Fruit Old Man, and Third went searching for him, while Second remained to guard the church. The others subsequently disappeared as well. Little Turtle later avoided returning to the church, whose leadership had changed during the eighteen years since his master vanished 318 489.

Searching with Wang Yao

Little Turtle accompanied Wang Yao and guarded her out of consideration for his master. When he briefly sensed the Crimson Flame Phoenix—whom he called “Little Bird”—he reported it to her, but could not locate its direction. At this point, he believed their master was dead, while Wang Yao insisted otherwise 152 288.

To enter the Zhou Family Cultivation Secret Realm, he used his Divine Beast constitution to conceal his strength below four star. This bypassed its entry restrictions, though the realm still suppressed his combat power 206 229.

Disputing Jiang Fan’s Identity

Inside the secret realm, Little Turtle attacked Jiang Fan during the struggle over the Holy Lord’s Spirit Weapon. His kick shattered Jiang Fan’s D-grade alloy saber, and he fought alongside Wang Yao against him 244 246.

Jiang Fan’s swordsmanship and Big Black’s Crimson Flame Phoenix aura raised questions about his connection to the missing Holy Lord. Little Turtle interrogated him about Big Black’s mutation, the Spirit Weapon’s refinement seal, and his beast contracts, but repeatedly rejected the possibility that he was their master 246 248 250.

His objections included Jiang Fan’s different appearance, youth, Spirit Master abilities, and humiliating childhood. Even after witnessing a saber technique resembling his master’s swordsmanship, Little Turtle continued to resist Wang Yao’s reincarnation theory 265 318 323 349.

Little Turtle later reunited with Peach Fruit Old Man and tried to expose Jiang Fan as an impostor. His efforts backfired: the tree interpreted Jiang Fan’s poverty as evidence of his master’s suffering and accused Little Turtle of disloyalty. Little Turtle reaffirmed his protective oath but privately vowed to prove Jiang Fan a counterfeit 384 385.

Reluctant Protector

Little Turtle sensed the Holy Lord’s unmistakable aura during Jiang Fan’s temporary awakening and rushed toward it, but failed to find either his master or Jiang Fan 409 414.

Under Peach Fruit Old Man’s instructions, he subsequently rescued and assisted Jiang Fan, including severely injuring powerful beasts for him to finish off. He insisted that he was obeying Brother Peach rather than accepting Jiang Fan’s authority 417 418.

Wang Yao later made him accompany Jiang Fan into another spatially restricted world. Little Turtle complained that he would intervene only in a life-or-death crisis, although Jiang Fan’s expressions and his own instinctive reluctance to hurt him increasingly unsettled him 433 434 456.

Battle at the Church of Justice

After Little White transported the group to the Church of Justice, Little Turtle confronted the pontiff over the Holy Son’s claim to be the Holy Lord’s reincarnation. He accused the pontiff of installing a puppet to seize control of his master’s church and attacked the Holy Son, prompting the pontiff to intervene 464 490.

The pontiff proved stronger than Little Turtle expected. Despite the danger, Little Turtle tried to reach the treasury after sensing Little Bird’s aura, fearing that the pontiff possessed the phoenix’s blood essence and might kill it 466 467.

When the pontiff attacked Jiang Fan, Little Turtle revealed his enormous true form and intercepted the blow with his spinning shell. The attack cracked his shell and drew blood, but he held it back long enough for Little White to open an escape route. Jiang Fan grabbed his tail and pulled him through the spatial opening 472 473.

Recognition and Reconciliation

Still severely injured, Little Turtle helped Jiang Fan confront a beast siege. Jiang Fan’s sudden increases in qi and blood reminded him of his former master, and witnessing Jiang Fan complete another beast contract further shook his denial 479 482.

When an insect swarm surrounded them, Little Turtle refused to abandon Jiang Fan despite being capable of escaping alone. After exhausting himself, he proposed swallowing the swarm and self-detonating to give Jiang Fan time to flee 487 488.

Jiang Fan instead entered his awakened state. Little Turtle recognized his master’s gaze and manner, rushed to him in tears, and embraced his leg after receiving a familiar kick. The awakened Jiang Fan instructed him not to reveal the truth to his current self or remain constantly beside him, because that self still needed tempering 488 489.

Little Turtle nevertheless watched over the unconscious Jiang Fan for three days. He also discovered that Little White was Third, who had recognized their master immediately and deliberately kept the knowledge to himself 490.

Afterward, Little Turtle became conspicuously attentive and protective while struggling to conceal the reason. He even declared himself Jiang Fan’s son and began calling him “Dad,” despite Jiang Fan’s rejection. By the latest documented encounter, he remained eager for Jiang Fan to recover his former memories 491 492 494 502.

Appearance

• Miniature form: Roughly fist-sized and outwardly similar to an ordinary market turtle, with small, black-bean-like eyes 225.
• Distinctive braid: A tiny braided tuft grows from his head. Fatty recognizes it as a defining feature of the Wang Family pond’s Divine Beast 152 226.
• Giant form: Can enlarge into an enormous turtle capable of carrying passengers, then shrink quickly enough to settle on Wang Yao’s shoulder 305.
• Usual perch: Often rests on Wang Yao’s head or shoulder, or travels inside her or Jiang Fan’s pocket 225 305 317 457.

Personality

Little Turtle is boastful, vain, foul-mouthed, and quick to take offense. He considers himself extraordinarily handsome, resents contemptuous looks, and holds grudges over perceived insults. He is especially sensitive about his appearance and his remaining tuft of hair 227 317 469.

He enjoys gossip and spectacles. Although he initially dismisses a student competition as children playing house, he becomes absorbed in watching it. Jiang Fan later exploits his curiosity by offering a secret in exchange for assistance 317 482.

His resistance to Jiang Fan stems partly from his idealized image of the Holy Lord: he cannot reconcile his magnificent former master with an impoverished teenager who suffered abuse and rejection. Once recognition becomes unavoidable, his hostility gives way to anxious devotion and fear that his master might reject him 318 482 490 492.

His two stated ambitions are to spread his descendants throughout the world and remain beside his master while continuing to find female turtles. His attachment to his wives and offspring is strong enough that Peach Fruit Old Man accepts an oath invoking their loss as proof of his sincerity 349 384.
