He deliberately cultivates the image of a harmless, simple-minded strongman while planning around surveillance, institutional politics, and opponents’ expectations. During his military-laboratory infiltration, his apparent irresponsibility and womanizing help conceal his reconnaissance and establish an alibi. He later keeps wearing bandages over healed injuries to soften anticipated disciplinary action 59 114.

His protectiveness is more sincere than his public excuses. He risks his life force to save Ross because he does not want Betty to grieve, arranges refuge at Kamar-Taj for his household, and awakens the Ring of Protection by deciding that his power should defend those he loves 122 134 138 167.

New York and S.H.I.E.L.D.

After system growth makes ordinary employment difficult, Lin Xiao secures a position under Coulson. He rescues May Parker from a mugging, but his appearance frightens her almost as much as the attackers. A $2,000 personal loan from Coulson allows him to move into Forest Hills, where he recognizes May’s nephew as Peter Parker 1 2 4.

The regeneration serum changes his appearance so dramatically that both Coulson and May struggle to reconcile him with his earlier appearance. Lin Xiao tells May that his former scar and frightening face were special-effects makeup. Meanwhile, Fury and Coulson begin watching him, an interest he hopes to turn into institutional support 6 7 8.

Afghanistan and Tony Stark

At Bagram, Lin Xiao notices armed observers but lets Tony leave with his convoy, believing captivity is necessary for Tony to become Iron Man. He subsequently receives a five-star rescue mission with a ninety-day deadline 16.

Over the following months, he builds strength through missions under the Super Earthling identity before rescuing Tony. Back in New York, Fury connects him to that masked identity and recruits him as a level-six agent. Lin Xiao negotiates a $650,000 salary, desk work, training, and limits on assignments; Tony’s reward adds eight million after-tax dollars and a Manhattan apartment 17 18 22.

Building a Superhero Team

The Iron Monger storyline brings new spells, flight, equipment, and valuables from Obadiah Stane’s vault. Lin Xiao then uses the Stand Arrow on Peter, setting him on a different path to superhero activity through The Fool 42.

During the Lizard crisis, he rescues Gwen and teaches Peter why poorly timed warnings can endanger a teammate. After the Hulk encounter, he decides that Peter, Gwen, and Ned’s activities should become an official team. Hulk, Carol, and Wenwu

Assigned as Betty Ross’s bodyguard, Lin Xiao also investigates a military laboratory holding a discarded needle connected to his earlier actions. He secretly retrieves it after carefully preparing surveillance countermeasures and an alibi 56 59.

Hulk badly outmatches him at Culver University, but Lin Xiao draws him away from students and eventually calms him through candy and contests. He gives Banner money when Banner decides to leave 64.

Later, he partners with Carol to recover Skrulls and fights alongside her against Wenwu. The battle forces him to use Enma and Normal Punch; subsequent rewards and attribute allocation bring him to A− combat power 78 81 84 85 89.

New Mexico and Asgard

Lin Xiao accompanies Coulson to New Mexico, becomes close to Sif, and fights the Destroyer with lightning and laser attacks. Afterward, he retains bandages over healed injuries to help deflect official criticism 99 107 109 114.

He remains in Puente Antiguo under the pretext of recovery and begins a relationship with Jane. Ned’s discovery that Lin Xiao’s ring can open portals draws him back to New York and into renewed contact with Kamar-Taj 115 116.

Brazil and the Ring of Protection

Lin Xiao negotiates protections for Banner and a cooperation agreement between S.H.I.E.L.D. and Vought. In Brazil, he spends his life force trying to save Ross and survives Abomination’s attacks while Heartsteel accumulates defensive growth 119 122 124.

He subsequently withholds Banner’s location from S.H.I.E.L.D., arranging a laboratory through Tony and intending to recruit Banner for Vought instead. At Kamar-Taj, reflection on the ten rings leads him to restore and awaken the Ring of Protection 126 138.

Doom and the Approaching Crisis

Lin Xiao forces Doom to exchange research information for discretion over his identity, surviving a psychic probe and magical confrontation. Later, concerned about Susan Storm’s disappearance and the Aether project, he decides to confront Doom again 159 167.
