| Mortal warrior and naval commander | 272 304 437 | Reaches rear admiral while young. Extreme training since childhood allows him to operate specialized Celestial Lions Armour without external assistance; he remains a mortal rather than an Astartes. |
| Emperor’s agent — lesser-god-level projection | 496 497 | As his disembodied spirit begins dissolving aboard the ruined Gemstone, he accepts the Emperor’s pact. His body is rebuilt from holy Psychic Power and his remaining soul, granting flight, a sacred greatsword, and protection against Chaos. His soul’s annihilation after the mission is the price. |
| Final manifestation of the Emperor’s Sword | 499 | Receives additional authority and summons a manifestation of the Emperor’s Sword. Expends all remaining Psychic Power and borrowed divine strength against Tzeentch’s weakened avatar, after which his body and consciousness fade away. |
Background
Dominic is a privileged son of the Ventria Family whose military ability earns recognition beyond his lineage. A High Lord of Terra personally selects him for special cultivation, while his successes against Chaos and xenos make him a target for Chaos forces. The Adeptus Astra Telepathica assigns Ralfa to protect him from corruption and physical danger 272.
Earlier in his career, Dominic serves as a ship captain near Armageddon. Accompanying his elders, he helps purge Ork remnants left after Skarak the Skullbreaker’s second siege, gaining firsthand experience of Ork warfare without directly confronting the Skullbreaker 282.
Dominic and Ralfa subsequently spend five years traveling across dozens of planets in Segmentum Obscurus, collecting the Tithe and fighting cultists and xenos. His later voyage to Brevis is prolonged by roughly half a year of Warp turbulence, damage, and repeated attacks 266 397 474.
Appearance
Dominic is a young, handsome, large-built man with fiery red hair, blue eyes, and a distinctly aristocratic bearing 288 312 318 438.
- Naval uniform: Wears a crisp pink uniform with rear admiral’s insignia and meticulously combed hair aboard the Gemstone 281.
- Armour: Uses master-crafted Power Armour and, in heavier combat, white Celestial Lions Armour 275 306.
- Left arm: Loses his biological arm to Ragnar. Its mechanical replacement is later severed at the elbow by Divine Envoy Four 308 395.
- Emperor’s Walker form: Possesses burning golden eyes, a floating laurel crown of holy light, and a body surrounded by sacred radiance 496 497.
Personality
Dominic is proud, confrontational, and conscious of his family’s honor. He initially treats Lynn as an insignificant provincial governor and responds to resistance over the Tithe with threats of treason charges and planetary destruction. Nevertheless, he respects demonstrable competence: Lynn’s military records and administrative achievements gradually turn his disdain into genuine appreciation 264 265 267 326.
His appetite for battle can become recklessness. Bored by reports and months of Warp travel, he launches an expedition to find the Dragon of Frost and dismisses Ralfa’s suspicions of an ambush. His confidence in personal combat later proves disastrously misplaced against Ragnar 272 275 308.
Dominic’s attachment to his soldiers is genuine. He regards Heisen as a brother and is devastated by the deaths of those protecting him. Initially, this guilt drives him to seek death alongside them; Sorine forces him to confront his responsibility to the surviving fleet. He subsequently resolves not to permit meaningless sacrifices 309 311 312 318.
Despite his devotion to the Emperor, he dislikes bureaucratic obstruction and priestly interference. He can tolerate temporary compromises when they preserve Imperial strength, but that pragmatism has limits. He is also ruthless toward people outside his circle: during his investigation of the ice tribes, he authorizes psychic interrogations that permanently damage captives’ minds 277 360 375 385.
Abilities & Skills
Naval Command
Dominic’s preferred battlefield is space, where he coordinates fleet movements, ambushes, and concentrated fire 288 355.
- Maintains an unusually efficient command system through rigorous training and organization rather than psychic coordination 281.
- At Carl II, conceals his main force, uses decoys against the Evil Sunz, assigns Lynn to cover Blood Axe attacks, and exploits the planet as cover 288.
- Studies enemy capabilities and clan differences rather than assuming all Orks fight alike 282.
- Emphasizes tactics and morale over equipment alone, despite commanding an exceptionally well-funded force 287.
- Adapts fleet targeting against the Death Guard by concentrating lance and incendiary fire on their command ship 408.
Personal Combat
A battle-hardened mortal, Dominic combines demanding physical training with elite weapons and armour 304 437.
- Kills a Snakebites Big ’Un with a precisely timed power-spear thrust during mounted combat 275.
- Coordinates mobile attacks with shield-bearing and fire-support bodyguards to create openings for Stormblade plasma fire 306.
- Uses armour thrusters to cushion a violent throw and regain his footing 307.
- Demonstrates accurate laspistol fire while retreating through the City of Teeth 394.
- Decapitates a Plague Marine with a prepared Power Sword strike 440.
- Cannot overcome Ragnar’s strength and regeneration in direct combat; the Warboss destroys his equipment and takes his left arm 305 308.
Investigation and Infiltration
Dominic combines ordinary intelligence work with specialist support rather than relying solely on rank 271 363 393.
- Commissions investigations into Lynn’s governance and personally examines the resulting reports 271 272.
- Understands the Sisters of Silence’s sign language 266.
- Enters Brevis’s undercity using a quartermaster officer’s uniform and synthetic facial skin 363.
- Combines optical camouflage, a psychic-shielding ring, and accompanying blank fields during reconnaissance 394.
- Seeks biological samples and genetic testing to establish the identity of suspected Genestealers 393 398 400.
Emperor’s Walker
After accepting the Emperor’s pact, Dominic becomes a temporary vessel of divine power rather than an independently ascended god 496 497.
- Flies through the Warp and resists its corrosive influence 496.
- Projects purifying sword light capable of dissolving the Chaos flesh of Lords of Change 498.
- Uses a field of faith to counter mental erosion, fate sorcery, and psychic curses 497 498.
- Gains insight into Lynn and Rena’s relationship through the Emperor’s perspective 497.
- Has finite reserves: sustained attacks by Greater Daemons and Thousand Sons sorcerers rapidly drain his borrowed power 498.
Equipment
- Master-crafted Power Armour and power spear — His equipment during the ice-plain hunt; the armour resists ordinary Ork choppas and Squig tusks 275.
- Celestial Lions Armour — Specialized heavy armour incorporating Vitrified Lattice Stone Crystal technology. Its protection rivals standard Terminator Armour, but its physical demands are extreme 304.
- Adamantium power claws — Can tear through Terminator Armour; Ragnar nevertheless cracks one with his bare fist 305.
- Setting Sun Dagger — A golden blade used during the fighting and escape in the City of Teeth 395 396 397.
- Laspistol and concussion grenade — Used to hold off pursuing believers and break an ice wall blocking escape 394.
- Psychic-shielding sapphire ring — A xenos-made device verified as harmless by a Tech-Priest and purified by Bishop Venka. Causes psychic perceptions and scans to slide past its wearer 363 394.
- Mechanical left arm — Replaces the limb lost to Ragnar; damaged beyond the elbow during Divine Envoy Four’s attack 308 395.
- Mummified saint amulet — Generates a weak sacred barrier against Chaos; nearby bodyguards rely on its protection when exposed to the Warp 466 467.
- Gemstone — His Victory-class battleship, flagship, and command center 360 437 457.
- Sacred greatsword / manifested Emperor’s Sword — Divine weapons wielded during his final existence as the Emperor’s Walker 497 499.
Relationships
- Lynn Kerry / Kerry Von — Initially a defiant governor under investigation, later a respected comrade. Dominic helps reclaim Dorito and restore its agriculture, but evidence of Lynn’s Tyranid connections nearly turns them into enemies 264 326 352 400.
- Ralfa — His long-serving Sister of Silence protector and confidential adviser. Her apparent sacrifice becomes a lasting source of grief associated with his lost arm 266 309 395.
- Heisen — A bodyguard of more than a decade whom Dominic considers a brother. Dies intercepting Ragnar’s killing blow 309.
- Sorine Vimlot — His rescuer and romantic interest. Her rebuke helps restore his sense of duty; afterward, he privately keeps her black mask and repeatedly thinks of her. Later meetings do not displace his military priorities 311 312 326 410.
- Karen — His adjutant of over a decade. Recognizes when Dominic intends to fight personally and warns him against repeating the near-fatal encounter with Ragnar 437.
- Cassandra and Elaine — Sisters of Silence accompanying his ice-field investigation. Cassandra dies shielding him from Divine Envoy Four; Elaine helps him fight and escape 394 395 397.
- Gus Griffith — An allied commander whose defenses impress Dominic and whose fleet provides crucial support against the Death Guard 283 407 408.
- Ragnar — The Ork Warboss who maims Dominic and kills his protectors. Dominic ultimately directs the bombardment that destroys him 308 309 349.
- The Emperor of Mankind — Dominic’s sovereign and the source of his final power. Their pact enables him to fight in the Warp at the cost of his remaining soul 496 499.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Brevis’s Tithe and the Dragon of Frost
Dominic arrives to collect Brevis’s Tithe and initially threatens Lynn for refusing payment. After reviewing evidence of the planet’s wars and hardship, he offers an extension and orders further investigation. Ralfa detects both Tyranid-like and saintlike presences around Lynn, leaving Dominic suspicious but intrigued by the possibility of an Emperor-blessed governor 264 265 266 267.
Rumors of the Dragon of Frost draw him into the ice plain with elite guards, a Baneblade, and Thunderbolt support. His party destroys a large Ork cavalry force, but the search ends at what he identifies as an abandoned Tyranid nest. He chooses not to pursue a comprehensive purge while the Tithe and fleet repairs remain unfinished 272 275 277.
Carl II and the Loss of His Guard
Dominic takes command against Ragnar’s fleet and initially gains a decisive tactical advantage. The situation reverses when the Anna absorbs concentrated Imperial fire and Ragnar brings the fighting aboard the Gemstone 288 291 293 305.
Dominic’s personal counterattack fails. Ragnar destroys Stormblades, kills his guards, consumes his left arm, and disables his armour. Heisen dies protecting him, while attempts by the Sisters of Silence to evacuate him also end in casualties. Sorine finally brings him to the bridge, where another Blood Axe attack places them under siege 306 308 309 310 311 312.
Lynn and Rena secretly eliminate the attackers under cover of Sorine’s Twilight grenades. Unaware of their intervention, Dominic credits Sorine with the extraordinary rescue. He resumes command and rallies the fleet, believing Ragnar has been destroyed 317 318.
Dorito’s Liberation
Lynn challenges Dominic’s assumption that Ragnar is dead, pointing to the Ork fleet’s unusually orderly retreat. Their subsequent planning develops into open mutual respect, and Dominic leads the Imperial assault on Dorito 324 325 326 337.
When Lynn lures Ragnar into Horseshoe Mountain Valley, Dominic concentrates the Tithe Fleet’s firepower on the position. Even after the Warboss is vaporized and the Waaagh Field collapses, he orders another half hour of bombardment. He then assists with planetary cleanup and farmland restoration, both as a favor to Lynn and to recover agricultural output toward Brevis’s Tithe debt 349 352.
The Plague Cleansing Cult Investigation
Back on Brevis, Dominic faces a plague threatening both the population and the required three billion recruits. Investigating undercover, he discovers that the Genestealer-linked Plague Cleansing Cult is containing disease and producing recruits more effectively than Imperial institutions. The contradiction unsettles his lifelong assumptions about xenos 354 355 363 368.
After Lynn admits to using the cult, Dominic accepts temporary tolerance on condition that it be eradicated once the recruits are delivered. His suspicions persist, however, and anonymous information draws him back to the polar ice fields 375 383.
His investigation reaches the City of Teeth, where an attempted sample collection exposes him and his escorts. Cassandra is killed, his prosthetic arm is severed, and he escapes with Elaine and a sample. Genetic confirmation linking the Dragon of Frost’s followers and the cult’s apostles to Genestealers prompts him to place the fleet on combat alert and summon Kerry Von for an explanation 393 394 395 397 400.
The Death Guard and the *Gemstone* Crisis
A Chaos invasion interrupts the confrontation. Dominic accepts Brevis’s fleet as reinforcements and adapts to the Pale Hand warband’s machinery-corrupting Rust Plague. After destroying the Pale Rose, he receives Sorine’s warning that the enemy’s consciousness has escaped aboard his flagship 403 407 408 410.
When conventional defenses collapse, he personally leads his elite guard and Sisters of Silence against the Plague Marines. The crisis subsequently reaches the Machine Spirit. Dominic approaches its corrupted throne through repeated electrical strikes and is later found unconscious after the Machine Spirit’s restoration. He cannot explain his survival, although he remembers a voice resembling Kerry Von’s 437 440 445 449.
The Emperor’s Walker and Death
Dominic later leads the Gemstone and Pegasus through a weakness in the Warp barrier surrounding Brevis. The campaign ultimately leaves his flagship shattered in the Warp and his disembodied spirit beginning to dissolve 457 496.
He accepts the Emperor’s offer without hesitation, preferring final annihilation to eternal torment by Chaos. Reconstituted as the Emperor’s Walker, he enters the Warp battle and finally learns that Lynn and Rena are lovers rather than merely collaborators 496 497.
After battling Lords of Change and Thousand Sons sorcerers, Dominic spends his remaining power striking Tzeentch’s weakened avatar with the manifested Emperor’s Sword as Lynn unleashes the Shadow in the Warp. With the pact fulfilled, he looks toward Lynn, Rena, and the distant location of his fleet. His accumulated resentment and unanswered questions fall away before his consciousness fades completely 498 499.
