Background / History

Earlier Tenure

Beerus trained under Whis and eventually became the strongest of the twelve Gods of Destruction. Once he reached that position, he largely abandoned serious training; advancement within the Divine Power Fourth Realm had become too slow to satisfy him 76 170 171.

During Old Kai’s tenure as Supreme Kai, Beerus sealed him away after a minor annoyance. His decision also protected their linked lives while Beerus slept, since a Supreme Kai’s death could kill him. Old Kai describes Beerus’s earlier sleeps as lasting hundreds or thousands of years 119.

Beerus also had Frieza destroy Planet Vegeta. Upon learning how powerful the surviving Saiyans had become, he briefly regretted the decision, imagining how they might have raised Universe 7’s average power level. Whis immediately reminded him that not every Saiyan possessed such potential 170.

His neglect left other gods to shoulder responsibilities normally belonging to a God of Destruction. In particular, the Grand Supreme Kai fought threats to the universe while Beerus slept 138.

Early Awakening and Defeat by Goku

Beerus awakens after just thirty-six years, his shortest recorded sleep, because he dreams of being beaten by a silver-haired warrior. Goku recognizes that this awakening occurs roughly two years earlier than in the original timeline 169 171.

Unwilling to admit the humiliating dream, Beerus tells Whis that he saw an evenly matched opponent. Whis identifies the warrior as his student, Son Goku, and hopes the threat of being surpassed will motivate Beerus to train 170.

Beerus instead tries to arrange a spar so that he can beat Goku before the predicted defeat occurs. Whis tricks him into agreeing that neither fighter will use a Divine Technique. Goku’s Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker reaches the Divine Power Fourth Realm at 2.25/1000, exceeding Beerus’s unenhanced strength 171 172.

Despite using tracking Destruction Energy spheres, energy barrages, and surprise attacks, Beerus loses decisively. He acknowledges that Goku has surpassed him in both strength and fighting skill under the agreed restrictions; the result does not establish that Goku has surpassed Beerus using his Divine Technique 170 173.

Earth’s Food and Vegeta’s Training

After the defeat, Goku offers Beerus a chocolate sundae. Earth’s food wins him over so completely that he becomes fiercely opposed to anything threatening the planet’s cuisine. Over the following two years, he visits Earth countless times and gradually resumes training to delay being overtaken by Goku 173 174.

Beerus initially refuses Vegeta’s request for instruction, then announces that he is going to exercise and allows Vegeta to watch. Through this indirect teaching, Vegeta learns the God of Destruction’s Divine Technique within two years 174.

Universe 6 Tournament

Beerus initially refuses to let Champa collect Super Dragon Balls in Universe 7, prompting a tournament wager. The brothers agree to a five-on-five competition on Beerus’s planet, with Gohan, Vegeta, Broly, Aku, and Piccolo representing Universe 7 184 185 186.

Zeno interrupts the tournament to warn the brothers about neglecting their duties. Whis openly reports Beerus’s preference for food and sleep, and Zeno’s suggestion that he might replace the two Gods of Destruction terrifies them 190.

Afterward, Beerus secretly wishes for Universe 6’s Earth to be restored. He uses God Ki to prevent even Whis and Goku from hearing the wish, embarrassed to reveal the favor he is doing for Champa. Champa later discovers the restored planet and understands who was responsible 191 192.

Time Travel and Zamasu

When Future Trunks arrives in a Time Machine, Beerus warns Bulma that manipulating time is a serious crime punishable by destruction. Nevertheless, he deliberately declines to act against her 193.

Goku subsequently reveals that an apprentice Supreme Kai caused Beerus’s future counterpart to die by killing the Supreme Kais. Furious, Beerus accompanies Goku to Universe 10 and orders him to destroy Zamasu, accepting responsibility for the consequences. He then warns Gowasu to choose his next disciple more carefully 197 198.

Tournament of Power

Beerus approaches the Tournament of Power confidently because Universe 7 has Goku and several other powerful fighters. He relies on Goku’s judgment when selecting the team and remains unconcerned even after learning that the other eleven universes intend to target Universe 7 together 200 201 202.

Champa’s erasure briefly exposes Beerus’s grief. Whis and Vados reassure him that Champa will return after noticing that the Super Dragon Balls have disappeared from both Universes 6 and 7 213.

When Universe 7 wins, Beerus wishes for all seven erased universes to be revived. The Grand Priest publicly credits him, leaving their Gods of Destruction indebted to him—including Quitela, the one god Beerus privately wishes he could exclude 213 214.

Later Training

Beerus reveals that he and Whis have felt an unexplained sense of urgency for tens of millions of years. Although the Grand Priest has assured them that the matter will be handled, Goku chooses to intensify his training. Whis predicts that this effort will finally put Goku beyond Beerus even with his Divine Technique 220.

Goku later continues visiting Beerus for sparring despite becoming stronger than him, using weaker transformations to keep their matches competitive. By then, a standard Super Saiyan transformation is sufficient to contend with Beerus without his Divine Technique 236.

Personality

Beerus is proud, irritable, and intensely concerned with his dignity. He disguises his dream defeat as an encounter with a worthy opponent and attempts to collect “interest” by beating Goku before Goku grows stronger. His confidence also makes him vulnerable to Whis’s manipulation 170 171 172.

His laziness reflects both a love of sleep and frustration with diminishing training returns. Goku’s rapid improvement gives him a reason to resume training, though he remains embarrassed by the prospect of a mortal from his own universe surpassing him 171 174 199.

Beerus often hides affection behind hostility. He trades insults with Champa while secretly helping him, and refuses Vegeta’s request for lessons before providing instruction indirectly. His fondness for familiar people also softens his enforcement of divine law, as shown by his refusal to destroy Bulma over time travel 174 191 193.

Abilities & Skills

Power of Destruction

Beerus can wield Destruction Energy independently of his strength-enhancing Divine Technique 172 173.

  • Creates fist-sized, purplish-black spheres that pursue their target after being dodged 173.
  • Uses attacks dangerous enough that Goku avoids receiving them directly 173.
  • His ordinary destruction lacks the cross-timeline reach of Goku’s combined Power of Time and Power of Destruction 197.

God of Destruction Divine Technique

The Gods of Destruction’s Divine Technique is identified as Ultra Ego in the novel’s settings. Beerus can use his Divine Technique to raise his strength from the Fourth Realm into the Fifth Realm 6 171.

  • Whis describes Beerus’s technique as providing a six-hundredfold strength increase, with further increases possible through absorbing external energy after taking hits 96.
  • The setting describes Ultra Ego as greatly increasing defense, with additional power limited by what the user’s body can withstand 6.
  • Teaching the technique requires Beerus’s approval or personal instruction; Whis cannot bypass this rule 130.

Incomplete Ultra Instinct

Whis has taught Beerus Ultra Instinct, but Beerus has not fully grasped it. His unwillingness to train prevents him from reaching even Ultra Instinct Sign at the time Goku learns that state 96.

  • Champa later counts Beerus as having only “half” mastered the angels’ technique 213.
  • Beerus recognizes that Goku’s mastery gives him formidable fighting skill even when Goku is not using Ultra Instinct in their spar 172 173.

Combat and Energy Control

Beerus combines close-range fighting with varied energy attacks 173.

  • Exchanges rapid punches and kicks with Goku, though he is outmatched during their restricted spar 173.
  • Fires sustained energy barrages and creates a large, intensely hot golden energy sphere 173.
  • Deliberately detonates an attack to obscure the battlefield before attempting a surprise punch 173.
  • Uses God Ki to conceal his conversation with Super Shenron from nearby observers 191.

Divine Traits and Limitations

  • Prophetic dreams: Dreams can possess a small degree of prophetic power after reaching the Divine Dimension; Beerus’s dream alerts him to Goku 169 170.
  • Linked life: Killing the Supreme Kais can also kill Beerus, as happens to his future counterpart 197.
  • Divine language: Addresses Super Shenron directly when making his secret wish 191.
  • Restrictions on combat: Gods of Destruction cannot fight one another without permission, even when they are brothers 184.

Relationships

  • Whis — Teacher and attendant. Whis repeatedly teases Beerus, engineers his restricted spar with Goku, and pushes him to take training and divine duties seriously 76 170 172 190.
  • Son Goku — Rival and regular sparring partner. Goku’s progress motivates Beerus to resume training, while his strength becomes central to Beerus’s confidence in Universe 7 174 200 236.
  • Vegeta — Disciple and potential successor. Beerus teaches him the God of Destruction’s Divine Technique; Whis later identifies him as a candidate capable of replacing Beerus 174 190 219.
  • Champa — Brother and competitive rival. Their insults conceal mutual concern, demonstrated by Beerus restoring Universe 6’s Earth and grieving Champa’s erasure 171 191 213.
  • Bulma — A familiar acquaintance whom Beerus refuses to punish for involvement with a Time Machine, despite citing the law against manipulating time 193.
  • Old Kai — Former victim of Beerus’s temper. Beerus sealed him away partly to protect their linked lives during his prolonged sleeps 119.
  • Zeno — Superior whom Beerus deeply fears, especially when his neglect of duty raises the possibility of replacement 190.
  • Quitela — A particularly disliked fellow God of Destruction. Beerus reluctantly includes him in the wish reviving the erased universes 213.
