Background and History
Early life and the Dragon Ball search
Bulma comes from an exceptionally wealthy West City family, which she describes as the richest in the world. After discovering a Dragon Ball in a storeroom and learning about Shenron, she builds the Dragon Radar to locate the remaining balls. At sixteen, she leaves home to begin her search 2 3.
Her first meeting with Goku occurs when her car goes out of control and he stops it with his bare hands. She recruits him as her bodyguard, offering one hundred million Sony and promising to do her best to make the gravity chamber he requests. After the car is wrecked, she continues traveling by capsule motorcycle while Goku rides the Flying Nimbus 2.
Bulma’s radar detects two Dragon Balls at Goku’s house, which he gives her. During their journey, she negotiates with Granny Paozu to receive the Six-Star Dragon Ball in exchange for Goku stopping Oolong. Once the group gathers all seven, Bulma summons Shenron and uses the wish to obtain a capsule-contained gravity chamber for Goku rather than something for herself 3 4 5 11.
Life with Goku
After the search, Bulma brings Goku to her family’s home so he can teach her martial arts. Her parents quickly suspect that she likes him, despite her insistence that they are merely friends. Goku teaches her to sense Ki and fly, beginning a training relationship that continues for years 12 20.
Bulma makes Goku promise to return annually and take her along when he searches for the Dragon Balls. His long training absences upset her, but she gradually accepts that growing stronger is central to his life. Their affection becomes increasingly obvious, although both hesitate to confess it 15 16 17 20 22.
Goku finally asks Bulma to be his girlfriend after his first Super Saiyan transformation. She accepts and kisses him. Two months later, he leaves for space, promising that his next journey will include her once he can guarantee her safety 23 25.
Marriage and children
After returning, Goku proposes to Bulma. They consult Mrs. Brief about the wedding and marry with their friends present 34 35.
Their first child, Son Gohan, is named after Goku’s grandfather. Bulma gives birth at home with a medical team hired by the family. She later becomes distressed when Goku sends Gohan away for a year of training with Piccolo, but accepts his reassurance that he has Gohan’s interests in mind 36 41.
Bulma subsequently gives birth to twins, Son Goten and Bulla, shortly before the androids’ expected arrival. Goku pauses his training to remain with her around their birth 78.
Androids and scientific support
Future Bulma sends her counterpart a notebook explaining the principles behind the Time Machine. Absorbed by its contents, Bulma works through the night and produces an upgraded Gravity Bracelet capable of 450-times gravity and communication across spacetime, although the communication function still requires a special energy supply 69 73 74.
Bulma later helps free Android 17 and Android 18 from their internal detonation devices. She identifies the devices beside their hearts and destroys them with laser cutters, leaving the siblings with only brief discomfort 86.
She also accepts Pilaf and his companions into Capsule Corporation, recognizing the value of Pilaf’s scientific abilities. When Beerus confronts her over time travel, she clarifies that the existing Time Machine was made by her future counterpart, while proudly maintaining that she could build one herself 193.
Journey for the Super Dragon Balls
Bulma builds a Super Dragon Ball Radar and asks Goku to turn their search into a romantic space journey. She prepares a luxurious spaceship approximately fifty meters long and more than ten meters wide, with enough facilities to make life aboard resemble life on Earth 144.
The couple collects three Super Dragon Balls over more than half a month before continuing toward Universe 6. Bulma pilots the ship through an opening Goku blasts in a universe’s barrier and helps navigate using their radar and Universe 7’s star map 148 149 151.
The devastation she witnesses in Universe 6 deeply upsets her and spoils the journey’s romantic atmosphere. Nevertheless, she remains with Goku through the discovery of the final Super Dragon Ball and the summoning of Super Shenron 155 156.
Later life
After decades together, Bulma remains perceptive enough to recognize when Goku is hiding his worries. She presses him to explain his unusual behavior as he seeks a way past his cultivation deadlock. They later spend ten days living an ordinary life together during his search for a breakthrough, before he eventually reaches the Sovereign Realm 253 255.
Appearance
- Blue hair and blue eyes are her most consistently described features 10 35 73.
- She cuts her hair short after Goku suggests the style; on his return from the future, she greets him wearing a white shirt and blue jeans 70.
- She later wears her hair in a single ponytail, recalling her appearance from their early years together 85.
- Her elevated Dimensional Level preserves her youth: even in her thirties, she still looks like a teenage girl 85.
Personality
Bulma is outspoken, proud, and quick to challenge others. She boasts about her wealth and intelligence, celebrates learning to fly as proof of her genius, and refuses to regard even her future counterpart as scientifically superior to herself. Her curiosity can completely absorb her attention, as demonstrated when the Time Machine notebook draws her away from bed and into the laboratory 2 12 73 193.
Her confidence contrasts with her early romantic shyness. She readily argues with Goku or teases her friends, yet becomes embarrassed when Launch or Mrs. Brief openly discusses her feelings. She is also possessive of Goku, introducing herself pointedly as his girlfriend when Chi-Chi approaches him 18 22 32 35.
Bulma strongly values companionship and family. She supports Goku’s training while insisting that he make time for her, worries about Gohan’s absence and Tights’s pregnancy, and fears dying before she can spend a long life with her husband. Her trust in Goku helps her regain her usual lively manner when those fears surface 20 41 98 215.

Future Counterpart
Future Bulma is a separate version of Bulma, not the later life of the protagonist’s wife. In her timeline, Goku dies from a heart virus seventeen years before his counterpart’s visit. The android catastrophe leaves Gohan and her nephew Trunks as her only surviving family 58 59.
She spends more than a decade developing the Time Machine under ruined conditions, sustained by her belief that Goku could resolve the crisis. When the visiting Goku arrives, she recognizes small differences in his speech and behavior and correctly concludes that he belongs to another timeline 59 60.
- Appearance: Thinner than her present counterpart, with tied-back blue hair, very pale skin, and visible exhaustion from years of hardship 59 60.
- Scientific contribution: Builds the Time Machine, replenishes its energy, and sends her research notebook to her counterpart through Goku 59 60 69 73.
- Cultivation: Receives a god’s cultivation method from Goku before he departs; no subsequent advancement is documented in these passages 69.
- Relationship with the visiting Goku: Finds comfort in his support but acknowledges that he belongs to her counterpart’s timeline 60 69.
