- Reported inconsistencies: Chapter 35 places his dimension at Grand Kai, while Chapter 36 lists King Kai before Chapter 40 returns to Grand Kai. Chapter 88 describes his base strength as First Realm, although Chapter 100 later presents reaching that realm as a new milestone 35 36 40 88 100.
Background / History
Origins and Soul Fusion
Bardock sends Kakarot away in Age 740. His spacecraft reaches Mount Paozu in Age 741, where an elderly man adopts him and names him Son Goku. In late Age 748, Goku realizes that his soul has fused with Yan Ni, an ordinary young man from Earth who knew Dragon Ball. He accepts both identities as his own rather than treating himself as an outsider occupying Goku’s body 1 61.
Remembering his grandfather Son Gohan’s death, Goku considers using the Dragon Balls to revive him. His immediate priority, however, is learning martial arts from Master Roshi. He reaches Roshi’s island after half a month and begins training that same day 1.
Earth Training and Tournament Victories
After matching Roshi in combat, Goku leaves to gain experience. He subsequently travels with Bulma, moves into her West City home, and uses a gravity chamber to accelerate his training. In return, he teaches her Ki control and flight 1 3 12.
Goku wins the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament by defeating Krillin and Roshi, who competes as Jackie Chun. Recognizing that greater Ki alone will not perfect his technique, he seeks out Korin, Kami, and Mr. Popo. Training at the Lookout eventually earns him recognition as a martial arts grandmaster 14 15 16 17.
He later trains under King Kai, becomes a Super Saiyan, and wins the 23rd tournament against Piccolo. His relationship with Bulma develops into marriage, and they name their first son Gohan after his adoptive grandfather 21 23 32 35 36.
Saiyans, Namek, and the Android Crisis
When Raditz arrives, Goku refuses to abandon Earth or his family. Rather than treating his brother as an unavoidable enemy, he invites Raditz to live on Earth on the condition that he obey its laws and stop resorting to violence 39.
On Namek, Goku restores the Grand Elder’s health with a Tree of Might fruit and receives a potential unlock in return. He rescues Vegeta from Frieza, heals him with a Senzu Bean, and confronts Frieza directly. The appearance of dark power capable of strengthening Frieza reinforces Goku’s determination to protect his family through further training 49 50 51.
Future Trunks’s arrival brings Goku into contact with a devastated alternate timeline. He comforts its Gohan and Bulma, confronts its deceased Goku, restores Gohan’s missing arm through Porunga, and trains Gohan and Trunks to master Full Power Super Saiyan 57 59 60 61 62 65 66.
Back in his own timeline, Goku kills Dr. Gero but offers Androids 17 and 18 a peaceful alternative to their orders. During the Cell conflict, he first allows Gohan to gain real combat experience, then intervenes when Cell’s demonic transformation escalates the danger 80 82 83.
Whis, the Time Realm, and Divine Opponents
Goku secures training under Whis while arranging to return to Earth at night through Instant Transmission. His Earth-based martial arts provide the foundation for learning Ultra Instinct, while Whis also teaches him the Power of Destruction 76 77 87.
Through the Time Realm, Goku reunites with Bardock and Gine and later brings them home to meet Bulma and the children. He also encounters other versions of himself and Vegeta, whose different cultivation paths become subjects of both comparison and sparring 103 104 111 112 113.
At the 29th World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku defeats Gohan and Bardock to win the adult division. He subsequently defeats Jiren with Super Saiyan Blue and spars successfully with Champa. Jiren’s loss motivates him to seek Marcarita’s instruction and develop Ultra Instinct Sign before their Tournament of Power rematch 142 143 150 153 154 201 204.
Later Timeline Conflicts and Ouperetto
Returning to Trunks’s timeline, Goku rescues Gohan from Goku Black and discovers Vegeta Black working alongside him. Their fusion into Gogeta Black forces Goku to confront a stronger combined opponent. Afterward, he reprimands Gohan and Trunks for neglecting their training and leaves their timeline’s recovery in their hands 194 195 196 197.
On Prison Planet, Goku investigates the barrier with alternate versions of himself and Vegeta. He recruits Jiren’s help against the Dark King and disrupts Fu’s surveillance without immediately exposing his full capabilities 225 226.
The Grand Priest eventually confirms that Zalama gave Goku the Power of Miracles because of Ouperetto. After defeating the scarlet Shenron and quietly extending Monaito’s life, Goku enters the final confrontation with Ouperetto. The Power of Miracles links the power supplied to him into a seamless whole, allowing him to freeze an enemy who also controls the Power of Time 237 252 258.
Appearance
- Hair: Distinctive crab-shaped hair that returns to its original style even if altered 1 22.
- Build and height: Grows from a small boy into an adult approximately 1.8 meters tall 3 20 21.
- Saiyan tail: Visible during his travels to Yardrat and other alien settlements 25 26.
- Clothing: Usually wears a martial arts uniform, though Bulma also takes him shopping for other clothes 22.
- Family resemblance: Closely resembles Bardock, but lacks his father’s facial scar 112 163.
- Super Saiyan appearance: Golden hair and eyebrows with emerald-green or teal eyes; Super Saiyan 2 adds electrical sparks and a more sharply upright hairstyle 23 43 50.
- Divine forms: Super Saiyan God turns his hair, pupils, eyebrows, and aura red; Super Saiyan Blue gives him blue hair and aura 61 93.
- Ultra Instinct appearance: Silver-white radiance and eyes develop through Ultra Instinct; Ultimate Realm distinguishes itself with brilliant golden pupils and galaxy-like silver-white flames 98 143 199 230.
Personality
Goku is devoted to martial arts but explicitly rejects the role of an impartial hero of justice. His family and friends come first; helping strangers is a secondary concern, often tied to a benefit or exchange. Nevertheless, he distinguishes hostile individuals from innocent bystanders and refuses to condemn an entire planet for the actions of some inhabitants 49 133 147.
He is affectionate, teasing, and occasionally vain, frequently joking about his looks and enjoying Bulma’s admiration. His boasts about commanding the household contrast with how readily he accommodates her wishes. He also values food, comfortable family routines, and regular gatherings with friends rather than treating training as his only purpose in life 21 37 40 57 122.
His protectiveness limits his appetite for risky battles. He permits himself to indulge his Saiyan enjoyment of fighting only when confident that he can control the situation. When an empowered Aku threatens the people behind him, Goku blocks an attack he could have dodged rather than gamble with their safety 177.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Instruction
Goku combines Roshi’s fundamentals, Korin’s corrections, Mr. Popo’s refined movement and Ki discipline, and Whis’s divine instruction 1 15 17 77.

- Can suppress his Ki to practice technique rather than win through superior strength 15 16.

- Tailors Gohan’s development toward Mystic Form and Beast Form after recognizing his difficulty with Ultra Instinct 121 162.

Saiyan Transformations and Kaioken
Goku develops both the conventional Super Saiyan line and forms involving divine Ki and Great Ape Power 74 97.
- Super Saiyan 1 Full Power: Retains Ki inside the body to reduce continuous leakage and stamina loss 43.
- Super Saiyan 2: Provides a hundredfold increase over base strength, compared with Super Saiyan’s fiftyfold increase 43.
- Super Saiyan God: Produces a Godly Aura distinct from the one he later possesses naturally 87.
- Super Saiyan 4 Limit Breaker: Draws on the Great Ape-derived side of Saiyan power 74 88.
- Kaioken: Mastered up to twentyfold; remains useful for controlled sparring even after transformations largely displace it 21 231.
- Later limitation: By Chapter 254, deliberately adopting an earlier form no longer changes his strength 254.
Ultra Instinct
Goku’s Earth martial arts bring him to the threshold of the angels’ Divine Technique before he begins training under Whis 16 77.
- Develops through Sign, Perfected Ultra Instinct, emotional integration, and Ultra Instinct: Ultimate Realm 97 116 122 199 201.
- Emotional integration removes the loss of precision caused by emotional fluctuations 116 230.
- Ultimate Realm combines Ultra Instinct with his innate Great Ape Power 199 230.
- Some benefits to dodging and counterattacking remain available outside the full Ultra Instinct form, but at a much lower level 142.
- Does not eliminate overwhelming power differences: Whis can still defeat him in one move after he learns the technique 97.
Instant Transmission
Goku uses Yardrat’s Instant Transmission for long-distance travel and close-range repositioning 76 83.
- Commutes between Earth and Whis’s training grounds 76 100.
- Transports groups between planets 49.
- Reaches New Namek after King Kai supplies its location 62.
- Tracks Dr. Gero by first placing a trace of Ki on him 80.
Power of Time
Goku gradually develops time manipulation from acceleration and delay into free space-time travel 74 77 174.
- Can briefly stop time, though the energy cost is considerable 77.
- Can slow an opponent somewhat stronger than himself, creating openings in combat 97.
- Combines temporal power with destructive energy attacks 153.
- Secretly extends Monaito’s remaining life by several years 252.
Power of Destruction
Whis teaches Goku the Power of Destruction after persistent requests 87.
- Can wield destructive energy against another user, including Champa 153.
- Integrates it into the Ultimate Kamehameha rather than relying only on a standalone attack 153.
Healing and Divine Cultivation
Goku can restore others using his own stamina and Ki 66.
- His dimensional cultivation strengthens his spiritual power and contributes to increases in combat power 35 36.
- By Grand Kai dimensional rank, he considers ordinary illness, including heart disease, unable to afflict him 57.
- Reaching both the Divine Dimension and the Divine Power grants him an infinite lifespan according to Whis 100.
Status Panel and Mental Power
Goku can inspect personal statistics, forms, dimensional ranks, and opponents’ abilities through a panel 17 31 40 82.
- Identifies Cell’s concealed demonic transformation and its activation condition before Cell uses it 82.
- Uses Divine Dimension mental power to disrupt Fu’s remote viewing screen 226.
Power of Miracles
Zalama grants Goku this power because of Ouperetto, though Goku initially struggles to comprehend it 174 237.
- Acts as a link that merges multiple incoming powers with Goku’s own without conflict 258.
- Produces an overwhelming final-battle state in which Goku feels omniscient and omnipotent 258.
- Allows him to immobilize Ouperetto’s time and space and prevent him from using any power 258.

- Dragon God Zalama — Source of his Power of Miracles and a contributor to his combined power against Ouperetto 237 258.
