Background and History
Rule over Great Chu
Chu Muyang rules one of the Central Continent’s four major powers. Great Chu governs countless cities, stations powerful cultivators throughout its territory, and shelters seventy percent of the common people without cultivation 18.
He regards Chu Qingfeng and Chu Yunxi as his chosen candidates for succession. After receiving an opportunity to pursue immortality, he considers leaving the dynasty temporarily in Yunxi’s care if he ascends to the Immortal Realm, though she asks him to choose her elder brothers instead 24 31.
Bargain with Ye Zichen
Chu Muyang initially sends Chu Yunxi to acquire the Nine-Turn Soul-Returning Pill. His aim is to strengthen the dynasty by helping another cultivator reach Half-Immortal, rather than relying on the pill to make himself immortal 19 23.
When he meets Ye Zichen at the palace, Ye Zichen forces both father and daughter to kneel. Recognizing that he is facing an immortal, Chu Muyang raises his purchase offer to seven hundred million Spirit Stones, but Ye Zichen instead demands Great Chu’s entire Spirit Vein 23 24.
Chu Muyang objects because the vein is fundamental to the imperial family’s standing and might take decades to replace. He accepts only after Ye Zichen adds an opportunity to comprehend the Dao and become immortal. He hopes eventually to establish an immortal array that will secure another golden age for Great Chu before his departure 24.
After receiving the insight, he gives the pill to Chu Yunxi for her future use rather than assigning it to one of the dynasty’s Venerables 24.
Crises in Chu Imperial City
When a mysterious golden-red phenomenon appears across the Central Continent, Chu Muyang suspects Ye Zichen’s involvement and chooses not to investigate. He reasons that the senior has his own plans 26.
Later, unexplained murders in the outer city kill several cultivators, including a Venerable. Unable to find clues himself, Chu Muyang gives his officials three days to produce a lead under threat of death, then visits Longevity Hall in disguise to seek Ye Zichen’s help 29.
Ye Zichen assures him that arrangements are already in place. Once the matter is settled, Chu Muyang hires craftsmen to renovate the pharmacy. He also proposes an edict praising Ye Zichen’s medical skills, but abandons it when Ye Zichen refuses the publicity 29 31.
Sword Inquiry Grand Competition
Chu Muyang invites Ye Zichen to accompany the imperial delegation to the Heavenly Sword Holy Land. He personally escorts him aboard a magnificent flying boat and introduces him to Jian Wuxin as Great Chu’s honored guest, emphasizing his formidable strength 31.
During the competition, he assesses the participants alongside the other dignitaries. Ye Zichen’s awakening of Chu Qingfeng’s Azure Lotus Immortal Dao Sword Physique leaves him overwhelmed with gratitude and openly proud of his son 32 33.
After Jian Wuxin receives Ye Zichen’s final sword stroke and the resulting blessing spreads across Weiyang, Chu Muyang takes over the proceedings and declares Qingfeng the competition’s winner. He subsequently pays tribute to Jian Wuxin’s pursuit of his sword heart 34.
Western Continent Investigations
Great Chu repeatedly sends investigators into the Western Continent, but the groups disappear. When contact with the latest expedition is lost, Chu Muyang seeks Ye Zichen’s advice, only to find him absent from the pharmacy. Ye Zichen and Long Han later encounter corpses belonging to Great Chu’s investigators in the poisoned territory 36.
Birthday Banquet and War Preparations
For his five-thousandth birthday, Chu Muyang invites the major powers of the four continents, excluding the Northern Region’s Devil Race. He welcomes the Eastern Continent’s representatives to stay in the palace and decides to strengthen ties after learning of their promising talents and connections to Ye Zichen 45.
The celebration also marks his attainment of Peak Half-Immortal. He personally receives the guests and arranges an especially prominent announcement for Longevity Hall so that he can welcome Ye Zichen without delay 46 47.
Mo Qianren interrupts the banquet to announce that the Devil Race will attack the Central Continent in three months. After Jian Ying kills him, Chu Muyang restores order and convenes the visiting representatives to coordinate their response. He bows in thanks when the other continents pledge assistance 48 49.
Concerned by the Dao Heaven Holy Land’s prolonged seclusion, Chu Muyang agrees to send another delegation to investigate its intentions. He also accommodates Zhao Qianxue in the palace while she remains in the Central Continent. Despite the coalition’s support, he fears the approaching loss of life and hopes Ye Zichen will offer guidance 50.
Appearance
- Middle-aged appearance: Described as a middle-aged man when he enters the palace courtyard to meet Ye Zichen 23.
- Recognizable imperial presence: Mu Lingxi identifies him partly through the dynasty’s providence surrounding him and his cultivation, which exceeds that of those nearby 47.
- Disguises: Changes his appearance and voice to visit Longevity Hall discreetly; later wears different clothing to escort Ye Zichen without attracting attention in the streets 29 31.
Personality
Chu Muyang is protective of his dynasty but willing to sacrifice an important resource for its future. His hesitation over surrendering the Spirit Vein centers on the imperial family’s foundations; his eventual acceptance includes a plan to protect Great Chu with an immortal array. As a father, he places Yunxi’s growth above his original plan to use the pill to strengthen a Venerable 23 24.
He is severe toward failing officials, threatening death when the outer-city murders remain unsolved. Toward Ye Zichen, however, he is cautious, deferential, and mindful of boundaries: he avoids investigating a phenomenon he suspects belongs to the senior and respects his refusal of public recognition 26 29 31.
His dealings with other powers are warm and pragmatic. He welcomes promising Eastern Continent cultivators, admires Zhao Qianxue’s liberation of the Western Continent, and acknowledges that her weakened continent should not be pressured into war. His concern over the coming conflict includes the countless lives it will cost 45 47 49 50.
