Power Progression
The chapters below mark documented demonstrations, not necessarily when Luffy first developed each technique.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber-body combat | 656 | Stretches his arms during his confrontation with Laboon and survives being flattened and hurled into a lighthouse. |
| Counter to Crocodile’s sand body | 673 674 | Discovers that water lets him strike Crocodile’s real body, then uses his own blood when water is unavailable. This is a tactical workaround, not Haki. |
| Gear Second and previously learned Soru | 717 | Uses Gear Second against Rob Lucci. His existing mastery of Soru helps him match Lucci’s movement speed. |
| Gear Third | 718 | Enlarges his limbs for giant attacks, breaking through a half-meter-thick stone structure and damaging a warship. Its slower attacks leave openings against Lucci. |
| Improved force control | 728 | Sends the force of a punch through all three heads of a hellhound without leaving external injuries. The narration describes his control as competent but not perfected. |
| Combined Gear Second and Gear Third | 735 | Activates both forms simultaneously against Moria, producing a swollen, steaming body and the attack Gum-Gum Jet San Kaguhō. He lacks the advanced Armament Haki coating associated with the narration’s comparison to Gear Fourth. |
Background and History
Childhood and Pirate Ambition
Garp tried to raise Luffy as a Marine through dangerous training: dropping him into a ravine, abandoning him in a forest at night, and sending him into the sky tied to a balloon. He later entrusted Luffy and Äs to a friend for further training. Luffy nevertheless insisted on becoming a pirate and credited Shanks with saving his life 721.
Äs is three years older than Luffy and left for sea three years before him. Luffy admits that he could not defeat his brother even before Äs acquired a Devil Fruit, although he believes their reunion in Alabasta might produce a different result 665.
Loguetown and the Grand Line
Dragon recommended Luffy as a possible traveling companion for Shiraishi and Retsu Unohana, who were searching the pirate world for Aizen. In Loguetown, the pair watched Buggy prepare to execute Luffy. Luffy declared his ambition to become King of the Pirates before lightning destroyed the execution platform, allowing him to escape unharmed 651 653.
At Reverse Mountain, Luffy confronted Laboon and declared their fight a draw. He promised to return after sailing around the Grand Line and painted the Straw Hat emblem on the whale’s head, giving Laboon a new reason to wait 655 656.
On Little Garden, he quickly befriended Dorry and objected when outside interference compromised the giants’ duel. After Baroque Works attacked, Luffy struck the real Mr. 3 among numerous identical wax decoys with Gum-Gum Stamp 659 660 661.
Drum Kingdom and Alabasta
Luffy became fascinated by Chopper’s transformations and persistently invited him aboard. When Chopper hesitated because he was a reindeer with unusual features, Luffy dismissed those objections and invited him to share their adventures. Chopper accepted 663 664.
In Alabasta, Luffy reunited with Äs, refused an invitation to join the Whitebeard Pirates, and received a piece of his brother’s Vivre Paper 665.
Luffy stayed behind to fight Crocodile while his companions escorted Vivi toward Alubarna. His first attacks could not harm Crocodile’s sand body; Crocodile impaled him and abandoned him in quicksand. Robin pulled him free and entrusted his rescue to Pell 668 669.
Returning with a barrel of water, Luffy exploited Crocodile’s weakness to moisture. In their underground battle, he used his own blood to keep striking Crocodile despite losing access to water, then continued fighting through poison to protect Vivi. His final attack broke through Crocodile’s sand blades 673 674.
Unohana’s treatment helped Luffy wake after one day rather than three. He later invited Vivi to rejoin the ship, but respected her decision to remain in Alabasta. The crew answered her farewell by silently displaying their X marks 675.
Robin, Jaya, and Sky Island
Luffy carried Robin out of Alabasta’s collapsing tomb despite her wish to die. When she subsequently asked to join his crew, he accepted, judging that she was not a bad person despite the others’ objections 676.
On Jaya, he insisted on reaching Sky Island. Although initially ready to fight Bellamy, Luffy refused to retaliate after Bellamy mocked dreams and the existence of Sky Island; he rejected Bellamy’s supposed “new era” and considered the fight beneath him 678 679 680.
On Sky Island, Luffy pursued Enel both for attacking his friends and to tell Mont Blanc Cricket that the City of Gold existed. Enel trapped one of his hands in a giant golden ball, but Shiraishi suggested using it as a weapon. With assistance from Nami, Zoro, and Wyper, Luffy reached Enel and drove him into the Golden Bell. Its ringing reached Cricket on Jaya and confirmed Noland’s account 698 699.
Water 7 and Enies Lobby
When Aokiji froze Robin, Luffy ordered Usopp to take her away for treatment and challenged the admiral alone. He nearly froze to death but recovered aboard the Going Merry, soon joking about the ordeal by covering himself in flour and posing as a frozen statue 707.
At Water 7, professional shipwrights declared the Going Merry beyond repair. Luffy’s decision to replace the ship triggered a confrontation with Usopp and a duel, which Luffy won. He left the Merry to Usopp and accepted his departure, while maintaining that they would remain lifelong friends 708 709.
Luffy then led the effort to recover Robin at Enies Lobby. He ordered Sogeking to shoot down the World Government flag and demanded that Robin say she wanted to live. After she asked the crew to take her to sea, they crossed Unohana’s bridge of light to reach her 715 716.
Against Rob Lucci, Luffy used Gear Second, Soru, and Gear Third. He insisted on stopping Lucci personally because the assassin could kill his companions if allowed to escape. Usopp’s encouragement helped him rise again after Lucci gained the advantage 717 718.
Back in Water 7, Garp revealed that Dragon was Luffy’s father—a fact Luffy had not known. Luffy received a new bounty of 300 million Belly, welcomed the Thousand Sunny, and tried to recruit Franky by withholding his stolen briefs 721 722 723.
Thriller Bark and Äs’s Rescue
Luffy invited Brook to join almost immediately after meeting him and offered to recover his stolen shadow. On Thriller Bark, he subdued a three-headed hellhound, attempted to recruit a tree man and a unicorn, and fought the island’s zombies 726 727 728.
During the battle with Moria, Luffy combined Gear Second and Gear Third. Afterward, Kuma approached the unconscious captain, prompting Zoro to offer his own life in exchange for Luffy’s. Brook later formally swore loyalty to Luffy 735 736.
Although deeply worried by Äs’s burning Vivre Paper, Luffy initially reassured the crew and insisted that his brother had his own adventure. He subsequently appeared with Shiraishi inside the prison headquarters and declared his determination to save Äs. During the Summit War, he used Gear Second and Supreme Big Slipper to kick aside Crocodile’s attack 736 745 747 752.
Personality
Luffy is energetic, impulsive, and intensely drawn to adventure. He eagerly explores dangerous islands, pursues strange creatures, and chooses destinations such as Sky Island before working out how to reach them. Food—especially meat—and celebrations are frequent priorities, even immediately after serious battles 659 678 699 707.
His apparent simplicity conceals strong emotional perception. Shiraishi describes him as naturally innocent and reliant on instinct when judging others, although Robin’s early ambiguity confuses him. He later recognizes both the suffering behind Vivi’s behavior and Robin’s desire to live beneath her refusal of rescue 658 674 715.
Friendship outweighs personal safety in his decisions. He fights through Crocodile’s poison for Vivi, accepts hostility from the World Government for Robin, and refuses to let Lucci threaten his crew. His refusal to retaliate against Bellamy also shows that he distinguishes protecting others from answering every insult 674 680 716 718.
Luffy can acknowledge the burden his choices impose. Following Usopp’s departure, he apologizes to the crew for drawing them into dangerous battles, but does not retract his decisions. Instead, he asks whether they will continue supporting him against stronger enemies 709.
Abilities & Skills
Gum-Gum Fruit
Luffy’s rubber body provides both his fighting style and substantial resistance to blunt force 656 669 735.
- Stretching: Extends his arms and legs for long-range blows, rescues, grappling, and movement 661 668 715.
- Blunt-force resistance: Survives crushing pressure and greatly reduces damage from ordinary blunt attacks 660 735.
- Electrical immunity: Enel’s lightning cannot directly harm him, forcing Enel to attack his surroundings or restrain him instead 698 699.
- Joint-lock resistance: His rubber body makes Robin’s joint-lock techniques ineffective against him 712.
- Elastic momentum: Twists his limbs to build rotational force, including the golden-ball punch that defeats Enel 673 699.
Named Rubber Techniques
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Gum-Gum Pistol / Bullet | Direct stretching punches used against Crocodile and Aokiji 669 707. |
| Gum-Gum Gatling | A barrage of dozens of punches per second; also used to knock down ranks of zombies 669 728. |
| Gum-Gum Bazooka | A forceful two-handed strike 669 709. |
| Gum-Gum Stamp | An extending kick that strikes Mr. 3 and breaks the tree behind him 661. |
| Gum-Gum Whip | A sweeping stretched-leg kick 669. |
| Gum-Gum Battle Axe | Raises a stretched leg high before bringing it down in a heavy strike 669. |
| Buzz Saw | Uses tightly coiled arms and rapid rotation to deliver a spinning kick 673. |
| Gum-Gum Rocket | Grabs a distant structure and launches himself toward it 715. |
| Gum-Gum Flower Arrangement | Drives the Going Merry’s mast into Laboon’s wound during their confrontation 656. |
Gear Second and Soru
Gear Second supports Luffy’s high-speed exchanges with Lucci; his previously learned Soru further improves his movement 717.
- Uses Gum-Gum Jet Bazooka against Moria 734.
- Remains effective later during the Summit War, where he intercepts Crocodile’s attack 752.
Gear Third
Luffy inflates and enlarges his limbs to deliver giant-scale attacks 718.
- Gum-Gum Giant Pistol breaks through thick stone and launches Lucci onto a warship.
- An enlarged Battle Axe caves in the middle of the warship.
- Air can be transferred between limbs to change the enlarged striking limb.
- The added power comes with reduced attack speed, allowing Lucci to evade and counter in open terrain 718.
Combined Gears
Luffy activates Gear Second and Gear Third simultaneously against Moria 735.
- His body swells while steam rises from it.
- Gum-Gum Jet San Kaguhō sends a tremendous impact into Moria’s enlarged body.
- The narration compares his appearance to an early version of Gear Fourth, but does not identify the technique as Gear Fourth 735.
Combat Judgment and Limitations
- Improvisation: Uses water and then blood to counter Crocodile’s sand body without Haki 673 674.
- Force control: Delivers an impact through the hellhound’s three heads without externally wounding them 728.
- Seastone vulnerability: Smoker restrains him with a Seastone-tipped jitte 667.
- Water danger: Requires rescue after falling into the White-White Sea while attempting to ride a Waver 685.
- Piercing and cutting attacks: Thumbtacks, shuriken, Crocodile’s hook, and Lucci’s piercing attacks remain dangerous 669 709 718.
- Special impacts: Satori’s palm shock wave injures him despite his resistance to ordinary blunt blows 688.
- Logia opponents: His initial physical attacks cannot injure Crocodile; the Alabasta battle explicitly establishes that he does not know Haki at that point 669 674.
