Appearance

Aizen initially presents himself as a refined, bespectacled captain with full, curly brown hair and a gentle smile. In Hueco Mundo, he drops the friendly expression he maintains in Soul Society 17.

  • Glasses: Initially wears square-framed glasses; they remain on the ground when his severed body regenerates 17 278.
  • Evolved hairstyle: Long brown hair swept back, with a single lock hanging over his forehead 282 310.
  • Hōgyoku transformation: Develops a deep-blue vertical slit on his forehead, blue-and-white eyes, and three pairs of white butterfly wings 282.
  • Clothing: Wears a white formal robe concealing the Hōgyoku in his chest; continues wearing unstained white robes in Hell 282 639.
  • Changing pupils: Has four blue pupils during the Soul King Palace assault and eight during the later confrontation with Urahara’s group 330 516.

Personality

Aizen’s reassuring manners conceal a calculating and frequently ruthless outlook. He maintains his captainly persona while directing experiments, manipulating nobles, and ruling Hueco Mundo in secret. He values subordinates for their usefulness rather than their obedience and considers loyalty itself cheap 17 181.

The unknown genuinely excites him. Shiraishi’s inexplicable abilities renew his interest in research, while White’s unexpected choice of a Quincy host fascinates him more than the experiment’s failure disappoints him. He prefers investigating anomalies to becoming angry over results that depart from his plans 27 66.

His rejection of trust is not an absence of all attachment. Hinamori briefly unsettles his determination to discard whatever obstructs his plans. He admires Tōsen’s ability to carry hatred while pursuing his friend’s ideal of peace, and shows a moment of loneliness when Tōsen chooses to die rather than accompany him 181 237 329.

Aizen’s ambition ultimately extends beyond replacing the Soul King. He rejects ruling a world still permeated by the Soul King’s scattered will, then later loses interest in governing a world he considers doomed. His final goal is to obtain an entirely foreign power and surpass the limits of his own world 283 648 649.

Abilities & Skills

Kyōka Suigetsu: Complete Hypnosis

Kyōka Suigetsu’s Shikai hypnotizes its targets’ five senses. Aizen publicly disguises it as a flowing-water ability that confuses enemies through mist and reflections 141 649.

  • Activation condition: Seeing its Shikai once makes a person susceptible to illusions during subsequent releases 272 275.
  • Applications: Impersonates other people, conceals his movements, substitutes allies or enemies for apparent targets, and falsifies his Bankai demonstration 102 143 525.
  • Preparation: Can arrange hypnosis in advance and systematically exposes academy students and other Shinigami to his release 291 326.
  • Not direct mind control: An impersonation can fail if his behavior is unconvincing; he supplements illusions with research and accurate acting 143.
  • Known countermeasures: Azashiro’s fusion with surrounding Reishi makes him unaffected. Shiraishi’s heightened spiritual senses can detect an approaching attack even while the visual illusion succeeds 436 525.

Bankai: Mirror Without Flowers, Water Not Moon

Rather than hypnotizing individual senses, Aizen’s Bankai hypnotizes the world’s future, replacing the present course of events with one of his own design 649.

  • Shapes the future and manipulates Shiraishi’s actions during their final confrontation 649.
  • Enables his plan to exploit their clashing attacks and open a black-hole passage to another world 649.
  • Was concealed long before its public revelation; Aizen says he disliked hearing his Zanpakuto spirit expose his inner thoughts whenever he used it 649.

Reiatsu and Defensive Barriers

Aizen’s rule over Hueco Mundo rests on strength far beyond the Espada, not merely hypnosis. His spiritual pressure can force Grimmjow to crouch despite his resistance 111 211.

  • Shatters Baraggan’s final attack with Reiatsu 525.
  • Creates an enclosing azure barrier that initially stops a coordinated assault, including Yamamoto’s concentrated blade 521.
  • His barrier is not absolute: Ōetsu Nimaiya breaks it after receiving the empowered name of “Sword God” from Ichibē 522.
  • Even after his later evolution, he remains unable to sense Shiraishi’s concealed Reiatsu 516.

Regeneration and Survival

The Hōgyoku allows Aizen to recover from dismemberment. His later body regenerates damage that would ordinarily be fatal, including injuries to the heart and the loss of his lower body 278 316 326.

  • Early vulnerability: Believes Shiraishi’s slash could destroy the Hōgyoku and deliberately keeps it out of the attack’s path 278.
  • Regeneration limits: Gin’s cell-dissolving poison briefly slows his healing; Shiraishi then applies karmic fire to prevent recovery 526.
  • Hell’s resurrection: Explains that Hell’s Reishi resurrects sinners, making ordinary death there temporary 640.
  • Hell’s influence: Is not immune to its psychological effects; prolonged confinement nearly drives him to dig out his own heart 639 648.

Zankensoki

Aizen possesses mastery of swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, movement techniques, and Kidō 320.

  • Shunpo: Evades Aura’s attacks while barely exerting himself and escapes Shiraishi’s initial attempt to strike his concealed presence 17 141.
  • Zanjutsu: Trades direct sword blows with Shiraishi and Yamamoto; after merging with his Zanpakuto, draws the blade from his hand 316 326 523.
  • Hakuda — Shō: Concentrates vibrating Reiatsu in his index finger to redirect Shiraishi’s blade 277.
  • Kidō: Casts Hadō #90, Kurohitsugi, against Shiraishi 277.

Hollow and Quincy Techniques

Aizen acquires powers beyond those of a Shinigami and deliberately works to integrate them 326 327.

  • Cero: Fires a violet blast powerful enough to distort and shatter space along its path 326.
  • Heilig Pfeil: Forms a bow from surrounding Reishi and fires an arrow whose strength reminds Yamamoto of Yhwach 326.
  • Blut Vene: Uses a defensive technique learned through observation to survive Yamamoto’s heat with cracked skin rather than complete incineration 326.

Shindō

Aizen creates Shindō through his understanding of the world’s essence. Its spells require no complex incantations, and each exceeds the destructive power of a fully incanted Hadō #99 522.

  • Wind: Produces numerous invisible cutting blades 522.
  • Fire: Transforms himself into sacred white flame, catches Yamamoto’s blade, and shapes flames into an attacking lion 522.
  • Limits shown: Shiraishi’s Wind Wall nullifies the wind blades, while combined attacks can overcome Aizen’s white flames 522 523.

Research and Manipulation

Aizen combines exceptional memory, broad learning, and careful observation with practical experimentation 27 140.

  • Studies Hollowfication, Soul King Fragments, Hōgyoku fusion, and methods of stimulating Arrancar evolution 138 310.
  • Uses hypnotized officials to access confidential Bankai records 102.
  • Analyzes recorded battles to distinguish Shiraishi’s powers from Zanpakuto, Quincy, and Fullbringer abilities 27.
  • Recognizes Orihime’s healing as the rejection of phenomena by repeatedly reviewing Ulquiorra’s memories 496.
  • Studies Hell’s structure and devises an escape plan involving the Mouth of Hell and amplified Reiatsu 640.

Equipment / Items

  • Kyōka Suigetsu: His Zanpakuto and the source of Complete Hypnosis; eventually merges with his body 141 316.
  • Hōgyoku: Used for evolution, regeneration, and Arrancar creation. Aizen regards it as a tool with finite usefulness rather than a sacred or unlimited source of advancement 211 278 283.
  • Reiatsu-concealing cloak: Wears a Kidō-infused cloak while stealing Kaien Shiba’s remains; Shiraishi detects him despite its concealment 17.
  • Reiatsu Recording Bug footage: Uses its detailed recreation of Nnoitra’s battle to study Shiraishi’s abilities 27.

History

Secret Rule and Hollowfication Research

After becoming Fifth Division captain, Aizen hypnotizes the officials overseeing his required Bankai demonstration. This gives him access to confidential records while preserving the false account of his Zanpakuto’s powers. Separately, he seizes Baraggan’s throne and establishes himself as Hueco Mundo’s ruler through overwhelming strength 102 111 525.

He arranges Kaien Shiba’s death for his Hollowfication research and steals the remains under concealment. Shiraishi’s ability to detect him prompts a detailed investigation and a mission sending Nnoitra and Tesla to test Shiraishi. When White later attacks a Quincy instead of fulfilling its intended purpose, Aizen orders surveillance of the Ishida family rather than abandoning the experiment 17 66 400.

Nobles, Fullbringers, and Exposure

Aizen assists Oda Nobunaga with a map of Seireitei’s traps and advice for attacking its institutions. He also plans to divert responsibility for Nobunaga’s escape toward Yoruichi and the Tsunayashiro Clan 74 400.

His pursuit of Soul King Fragments brings him into conflict with Tokinada. He exposes spectators to Kyōka Suigetsu during Aura’s public sparring match, impersonates Tokinada to manipulate her, and steals a Fullbringer corpse for his experiments. He subsequently offers Aura a place at his side 138 141 143 180.

As Kyōraku’s suspicions grow, Shiraishi confronts Aizen over Hollowfication, Urahara’s framing, and the Espada. Shiraishi cuts him into four pieces, but Aizen regenerates through the Hōgyoku and abandons his former position 262 266 277 278.

Evolution and the Divine Realm

Aizen revises his ambition from replacing the Soul King to creating an independent world governed by his own will. He intends to populate it with selected humans, Shinigami, and Arrancar, while eventually eliminating even the Hōgyoku’s connection to the Soul King 283.

He recruits Kūgo Ginjō because of his ability to take and distribute power. Urahara and Mayuri identify Ginjō as a test subject for Aizen’s investigation of Soul King power. Although Shiraishi removes Ginjō’s corpse from Las Noches, Aizen retains the data gathered through the Negación Threads 310 312 316.

During Yamamoto’s assault, Aizen deliberately avoids relying on hypnosis so that the battle can temper his Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy powers together. He evolves again and proceeds toward the Soul King Palace 326 327 329. His later actions destroy the device maintaining the worlds’ arrangement; the opening of the Divine Realm contributes to Soul Society and the World of the Living merging 545.

Defeat and Confinement in Hell

Aizen creates Jehovah as a Soul King replacement and sends him with a million Arrancar into the lower realm, intending to force his hidden enemies into the open 512. During the ensuing confrontation, Shiraishi uses PROJECT’s hypnosis to make Gin stab Aizen. Gin activates the poison concealed in Kamishini no Yari, and Shiraishi repeatedly cuts and burns Aizen with karmic fire before he can regenerate 525 526.

Ichibē confirms that Aizen has been sent to Hell because his immense Reishi cannot safely return to Soul Society. There, Aizen recruits Szayelaporro to help find the founders of the Five Great Noble Clans 545. His influence also survives outside Hell through the extremist Restore Aizen Group 589.

Return and Departure to Other Worlds

After five years in Hell, Aizen seeks escape before its influence overwhelms his self-control. He gathers followers by promising to fulfill their desires and recruits Saitō Furofushi by offering the permanent death she wants. His plan involves combining and amplifying powerful Reiatsu to disturb the balance around Hell’s gates and escape through the Mouth of Hell 639 640.

Upon returning, he challenges Shiraishi to settle their unfinished conflict. He reveals his Bankai, uses their clash to create a passage beyond their world, and departs in search of an entirely new source of power 648 649. Shiraishi and Unohana later join the Straw Hat Pirates while searching for him 675.

Relationships

  • Shiraishi — Investigative subject, rival, and eventual killer. Aizen remains fascinated by his concealed Reiatsu and unconventional powers; their final battle becomes the means for Aizen’s departure to other worlds 17 27 526 649.
  • Momo Hinamori — His devoted subordinate. He comforts her, excludes her from his plans, and experiences unusual hesitation over abandoning her 237 279.
  • Kaname Tōsen — Close collaborator whose commitment to a better world earns Aizen’s genuine admiration. Aizen wants him to witness the Soul King Palace assault and shows loneliness when he chooses death instead 181 329.
  • Gin Ichimaru — Long-serving conspirator and concealed enemy. Aizen knows Gin still intends to kill him but is curious about his method; Gin’s poison ultimately enables his defeat 283 526.
  • Aura Michibane — Initially manipulated through Aizen’s impersonation of Tokinada, then recruited. Later assists his research into Hell alongside Loly 143 180 640.
  • Kisuke Urahara — Intellectual rival and major opponent. Aizen acknowledges their comparable intellect but rejects the idea that it places Urahara on equal footing with his evolved power 324 516.
  • Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto — Former superior and opponent. Aizen exploits their battle to advance his evolution while declaring his intention to bury Soul Society’s history 326 327.
  • Baraggan — Dispossessed predecessor as Hueco Mundo’s ruler. Baraggan’s fear and resentment culminate in a final attack that Aizen destroys 525.
  • Szayelaporro — Research subordinate who fears Aizen’s scrutiny; later approached as an ally in Hell 111 545.
  • Saitō Furofushi — Prospective follower won over by the promise of permanent death, though she refuses to recruit the other original captains for him 640.
  • Kyōka Suigetsu — His talkative Zanpakuto spirit, appearing as an elegant, barefoot woman with a monocle. Her habit of discussing his inner feelings contributes to his reluctance to use Bankai 649.
