Appearance
- Early appearance: Under 60 when he meets Vic, with graying hair at his temples 37.
- Distinguishing features: A scar at the corner of his eye, gray hair and beard, and a burly physique 674.
- After rejuvenation: His body grows larger, his muscles become more pronounced, and his loose skin and facial wrinkles disappear. His gray hair, beard, and eye scar remain 674.
- Clothing: Wears a Marine uniform and a coat marked “Justice.” After rejuvenation, he habitually keeps his dog-head hat on and wears a gold ring 740 1156.
Personality
Garp is loud, irreverent, impatient, and fond of teasing his comrades. His appetite frequently dominates conversations, particularly when Vic is cooking. Despite his rank, he lives in a modest two-story house with a simple courtyard 70 75.
He values freedom more than promotion. He repeatedly refuses the Admiral position and selectively obeys orders, sometimes pretending not to hear instructions before sailing away to fight pirates. Remaining a Vice Admiral allows him to pursue his own understanding of justice without becoming the Celestial Dragons’ servant 46 112 754 1112 1148.
His carefree behavior conceals strong attachments. He remembers Roger with nostalgia rather than hatred, protects Ace despite his parentage, and privately breaks down after Vic leaves the Marines 336 364 577.
Garp’s judgment is sharper than his manner suggests. Zephyr describes him as someone who sees matters clearly despite joking constantly; Sengoku later recognizes that Garp understands the World Government’s actions from a perspective beyond the usual Marine–pirate divide 112 1088.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Unarmed Combat
Garp builds his reputation through his fists, physical techniques, and Haki rather than a Devil Fruit. His strength and battle experience allow him to overwhelm opponents far beyond ordinary Marine standards 67 433 1194.
- Blocks Vic’s Cutting Steel sword attacks without actively coating his fists in Armament Haki 38.
- Dives beneath his warship and physically carries it into a dock whose entrance is too shallow 396.
- Drives back Ju Peter’s corrosive black wind with the air pressure of an uncoated punch 1156.
- Adapts to unfamiliar martial arts during combat and develops counters as a fight continues 67.
- Reacts to Ju Peter’s charge and prepares a counterattack while being pushed backward 1156.
Armament Haki
Armament Haki is central to Garp’s fighting style. His mastery extends beyond hardening to outward projection and advanced flow 68 353 404.
- Uses Haki-coated fists to clash with swords and reinforce his strikes 67.
- Projects Armament Haki outward to repel Vic’s lightning tiger 404.
- Instantly coats his entire body to withstand lightning without injury 404.
- Deliberately restricts himself to low-level Armament during Vic’s awakening, allowing the younger fighter to practice rather than overwhelming him with advanced flow 68.
- Limit: Sustained full-body coating consumes considerable energy. Vic exploits this by forcing him to endure repeated lightning attacks 404 405.
Observation Haki and Future Sight
Garp’s advanced Observation Haki lets him anticipate attacks and recognize threats that ordinary sight cannot reveal 405 957.
- Foresees Vic’s combinations and counters moves before Vic can complete them 405.
- Predicts lightning strikes and moves before they land 404.
- Locates Sanjuan Wolf behind Hachinosu’s giant skull 957.
- Foresees Shiryu’s invisible ambush, knocks aside his blade, and punches him away 957.
- Limit: Prediction does not guarantee evasion. During their shipyard spar, Vic’s superior aerial mobility lets him land a kick even after Garp foresees it 405.
Conqueror’s Haki and Coating
Garp awakens Conqueror’s Haki in his youth and develops offensive coating techniques through battles with Roger and other leading pirates 366.
- Combines Conqueror’s coating with Armament Haki for devastating close-range attacks 1150 1156.
- Crushes a primordial demon’s Haki armor and suppresses its undying ability with a punch 1150.
- His accumulated Haki is described as exceeding that of other contemporary fighters apart from Imu 1150.
- Limit: Imu’s vastly greater accumulation overwhelms him. After three punches, his Haki reserves are nearly exhausted; the fourth makes him vomit blood, and the fifth leaves him unable to rise 1195.
Six Powers and Mobility
- Soru: Uses high-speed movement to close distance and finish exchanges 38 67.
- Geppo: Can pursue opponents through the air, though Vic’s more refined aerial movement gives Vic an advantage in their spar 405.
- Natural aptitude: Zephyr recalls that Garp picked up the Six Powers and Haki through playing and fighting, while Zephyr required sustained effort 129.
Endurance and Recovery
- Eats enormous quantities to store energy for prolonged fighting 129.
- According to Zephyr, injuries that would leave him bedridden for a month heal for Garp in three days and fifteen meals 129.
- Eventually begins losing stamina and combat strength to age despite continued training; Vic reverses this decline through treatment and rejuvenation 674.
Mentorship
Garp trains through pressure, repeated combat, and carefully controlled force. Although his explanation of his own Armament awakening is unhelpfully casual, he proves capable of guiding Vic through both awakening and practical mastery 40 68.
- Recognizes Vic’s swordsmanship, Observation Haki, and potential after their first fight 38.
- Pushes Vic to awaken Armament Haki, then lowers his own output to help Vic consolidate it 68.
- Teaches Vic about Haki and agrees to train him against Conqueror’s Coating 336 353 366.
- Advises Vic on promotion requirements and offers access to pirate intelligence that could help him earn military merit 352 353 382.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Description |
|---|---|
| Galaxy Impact | A Conqueror’s-coated attack developed among his counters to Roger’s Divine Departure. At Hachinosu, it shatters a large section of the giant skull 366 957. |
| Fist Bone Impact | A descending, Conqueror’s-coated strike used to destroy a primal demon before its immortality can activate 1119. |
| Black Hole Devouring | His strongest documented attack. A small black hole appears before his knuckles, devouring obstacles as he joins Vic and Uranus in attacking Imu 1192. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dog-Head Warship — His flagship, distinguished by a ram shaped like a dog’s head holding a bone 37.
- Golden Den Den Mushi — Returned by Vic after Luffy nearly presses it; Vic criticizes Garp for leaving it unattended 352.
- Pure Gold — A treasure accepted from Vic to preserve his restored condition while pursuing the God Realm 674.
- Gold ring — Worn after his rejuvenation 740.
- Rare metals — Collects two pieces for Vic’s sword-forging plans and refuses payment 56 68 70.
History
Early Life and God Valley
Pirates brought suffering to Foosha Village during Garp’s childhood. He joined the Marines to protect vulnerable people while retaining his freedom, rather than to obtain wealth or authority 332.
At God Valley, Garp helped arrange Shanks’s escape by placing him in a treasure chest and passing it to Roger. He also gave Dragon the Devil Fruit that granted him wind powers. This intervention contributed to the trust that later led Roger to entrust Ace to him 1082.
Garp witnessed the figure later identified as Imu possess Saturn and turn Rocks into a demon. He nevertheless remained in the Marines to protect ordinary people and prevent the institution from becoming entirely subservient to the Celestial Dragons. His continued presence also protected Marines who had survived God Valley 1082 1119 1156.
Roger and Ace
Garp fought Roger at least a hundred times but never personally captured him at sea. Before his execution, Roger asked him to raise his unborn child. Garp accepted because Ace was innocent and would otherwise be killed for his father’s identity 336 364.
He entrusted Ace’s daily care to Dadan. Years later, he disclosed Ace’s parentage to Vic and asked him to show leniency if Ace chose piracy, seeking protection for the boy beyond Garp’s eventual retirement 336 337.
Recruiting and Protecting Vic
Garp meets Vic on Laipe Island while traveling with Tsuru. Vic challenges him to demonstrate that he deserves direct entry into the Marines. After a three-hour fight in which Vic cannot injure him, Garp praises his talent and invites him to serve aboard his ship after training camp 37 38.
At Marine Headquarters, Garp’s next major spar pushes Vic into awakening Armament Haki. His support extends beyond training: he collects forging materials, protects Vic’s interests, and beats Sakazuki at G-1 after learning that Sakazuki injured him 68 175.
Vic eventually serves as Garp’s adjutant. Their later spar at Tom’s shipyard demonstrates Vic’s growth, with Garp retaining a ground-combat advantage through Future Sight while Vic gains the upper hand in aerial maneuvering 332 402 403 404 405.
Vic’s Departure and Reconciliation
When Vic describes a troubling mission, Garp fears that he may follow Dragon out of the Marines and returns to headquarters to demand an explanation 513.
After Vic kills Celestial Dragons and leaves the organization, Garp accepts his decision and tells him not to hesitate if they meet as enemies. He then cries in private and takes leave to visit Luffy 577.
Their reunion in Foosha Village resolves their mutual guilt. Vic’s example changes Garp’s attitude toward his grandsons: he acknowledges that Marine and pirate labels do not determine someone’s character and stops insisting that Ace and Luffy become Marines 672 673.
At 64, Garp accepts Vic’s treatment, five Soul Fruits, and Pure Gold. Restored to his physical peak, he agrees to contact Vic when he is ready to attempt a God Realm breakthrough 674.
Paramount War and Hachinosu
During Ace’s execution, Garp stays beneath the platform in accordance with Vic’s plan and avoids revealing his family connection to Ace. Nevertheless, his commitment to Marine justice leads him to strike Marco down when Marco approaches the platform 809.
After the war, Garp steps back from active duty. He dismisses Koby’s concern that Akainu might punish him for Vic becoming an Emperor, trusting both his standing among the Marines and his own superior strength 866.
When Blackbeard kidnaps Koby, Garp seeks a rescue force but is refused by Akainu. He instead takes Helmeppo, Hibari, and Kujaku to Hachinosu, drawing the pirates’ attention while the others search. He damages the island with Galaxy Impact, repels Shiryu’s invisible ambush, and exposes Catarina’s impersonation of Koby 957 959 960.
Lodestar and the Battle Against Imu
Garp lands on Lodestar with the Marines and declares that he will personally subdue Luffy if necessary. His wider priority, however, becomes overthrowing the World Government and killing Imu rather than competing for the One Piece 1063 1077.
He helps Sengoku recognize the connection between the World Government’s atrocities, the suppression of Void Century history, and its interest in the One Piece. After the truth emerges, he urges Sengoku to lead the Marines back toward genuine justice 1088 1112.
Following his plan with Vic, Garp initially conceals his God Realm strength while destroying members of Imu’s Demon Legion. He directs Tsuru to test whether her Wash-Wash Fruit can reverse the transformations and later fights both a primordial devil and Ju Peter 1119 1150 1156.
When Joy Boy’s stored Haki strips Imu of her defenses, Garp reveals his strength and attacks alongside Vic and Uranus. Their combined assault annihilates her temporarily, but she resurrects. Garp subsequently withstands one direct clash without serious injury before Imu’s repeated punches exhaust his Haki and leave him near death 1192 1194 1195.
