Background / History

Ancient conflict and consolidation of power

Imu fought Joy Boy during the conflict eight hundred years before the main confrontation. By her account, they grew stronger through thousands of battles before she finally defeated him. Joy Boy’s recovery power also inspired the development of her Law of Immortality 1143 1178.

After the ancient holy war, Imu believed that every opposing God Realm powerhouse had died. She spent the following eight centuries suppressing knowledge of that realm and sabotaging suspected breakthroughs, preventing potential rivals from reaching her level 922.

Her control extended through soul contracts with elite Celestial Dragons. By binding the Five Elders and Holy Knights, she controlled the leadership above the World Government, Marines, Impel Down, and affiliated nations without publicly revealing herself 977.

God Valley

At God Valley, Imu possessed Saturn and resisted the combined attacks of Garp, Roger, Rocks, Whitebeard, Linlin, and Kaido. She transformed Rocks into a demon after threatening his wife and child, shaking his resolve and exploiting the darker emotions accumulated through his ambitions 1119 1120.

Reverie and the Empty Throne

Cobra encountered Imu while questioning the Five Elders about Queen Lily and the meaning of “D.” Imu openly occupied the Empty Throne, making Cobra a witness to a secret the government considered grounds for execution 912.

Learning that Lily’s full name was Nefertari D. Lily convinced Imu that the queen had betrayed the alliance of the Twenty Kings. She attacked Cobra with a Haki-coated arrowhead, but Vic intercepted it. Their confrontation exposed Imu’s God Realm strength to Vic 913.

Imu subsequently transformed to join the fighting. A mysterious black-robed powerhouse intervened, allowing the younger Vic, Cobra, and Sabo to escape. Later chapters reveal that this figure was Vic himself, returning through time after the battle at Lodestar Island 915 1203 1205.

The encounter made Imu fear that other God Realm experts might emerge beyond her surveillance. The black-robed figure’s unexplained movements and strength frightened her enough that she avoided leaving Mary Geoise 922 1205.

Egghead and Elbaf

At Egghead, Imu descended into Mars, removed Vic’s Haki from the Five Elders’ wounds, and restored their ability to resurrect. She then used pentagrams to seize Rebecca and the others, turning them into demon underlings. Vic, Luffy, and Rebecca resisted the possession’s effects with Conqueror’s Haki 994 995.

Unable to fully understand Vic’s methods, Imu and the Five Elders chose to eliminate Luffy first. They targeted Elbaf using an existing teleportation coordinate, expecting the Straw Hats to fall without Vic’s protection 1008.

Possessing Gunko, Imu repeatedly exhausted Luffy before Loki intervened. The two held her to a rough standstill, but the encounter demonstrated that even her borrowed body was an overwhelming opponent 1015 1016.

Lodestar Island

Imu arrived personally at Lodestar Island with more than twenty reinforcements, including retired members of the Five Elders. She revealed her face and declared her intention to extinguish the world’s competing “lights,” leaving only her own 1117.

During the battle, she fought Vic, seized Loki and Nami’s thunderclouds, and unveiled an enormous Human-Beast Form. Although Vic repeatedly destroyed or severely injured her body, her perfected immortality restored her 1121 1138 1144 1149 1187 1188.

Loki’s intervention prompted Imu to use Black Turn on him. Luffy’s Drums of Liberation countered aspects of her demon powers, while ancient robots released stored portions of Joy Boy’s Conqueror’s Haki to break her defenses 1183 1185 1191 1194.

After surviving Luffy’s strongest attempt to kill her, Imu concluded that he remained far below the original Joy Boy. She unleashed her previously restrained Haki and speed, overwhelmed Uranus, defeated Garp in five punches, pierced Luffy’s chest, and knocked Vic unconscious 1194 1195.

The black-robed figure revealed

Vic returned wearing the black robe and revealed that Imu’s earlier blow had sent him seven hundred years into the past. During his intervening cultivation, he had become the mysterious opponent she remembered from Pangaea Castle 1205.

Imu recognized that he had also mastered the Laws of Time. Realizing that her own attack had created the enemy she most feared, she lost her composure and attacked him. The provided account ends before the outcome of this confrontation 1205.

Appearance

  • Normal form: A slender woman approximately three meters tall, described as exceptionally beautiful 1117 1144.
  • Eyes: Ringed, devil-like eyes; her pupils change into overlapping diamond shapes during transformation 1118 1144.
  • Clothing: A crown and black robes; her later cloak has gilded designs and tassels that shed stardust-like light 913 1120 1143.
  • Concealed identity: Initially wears a mask and loose robes. Her echoing voice does not reveal her gender 913 1118.
  • Demonic features: Can manifest bat wings and an arrow-tipped tail 1122 1126.
  • Beast form: Resembles a gigantic salamander, exceeding one hundred meters in length when fully expanded 915 1144.
  • Human-Beast Form: Over eighty meters tall, with immense musculature, claws, and metallic-looking dark-gold scales 1144 1146.
  • Blood: Green, visible when Vic splits her body and Garp destroys her jaw 1121 1127.

Personality

Imu regards herself as a god and everyone beneath the God Realm as fundamentally inferior. She treats the Five Elders and Holy Knights as replaceable servants, insisting that their destruction cannot threaten her personal supremacy 1180 1183.

Her authority depends on secrecy and the prevention of rivals. She conceals her occupation of the Empty Throne, suppresses knowledge of higher cultivation, and becomes deeply unsettled when Vic and Garp demonstrate that they reached the God Realm without her detecting their breakthroughs 912 922 1193.

She is ruthless rather than bound by a warrior’s code. She attacks weaker opponents when they threaten her plans and uses loved ones as leverage, as demonstrated against Rocks and in her threats toward Vic’s family and friends 1120 1143.

Her calm superiority breaks when her divinity is challenged. Vic destroying her head provokes furious retaliation, while his eventual revelation as the black-robed figure leaves her desperate. Joy Boy’s legacy likewise triggers intense anger and apprehension 1144 1194 1205.

Vic concludes that her interest in Qingning Star’s unique Law Fruits and the prospect of eternal life gives her a reason to preserve the planet. This self-interest does not prevent her from permitting the Celestial Dragons’ persecution of its inhabitants 1044.

Abilities & Skills

Law of Immortality

Imu’s foundational perfected Law restores her after otherwise fatal destruction 1122 1149.

  • Regenerates a destroyed head, severed body, and extensive wounds 1121 1144 1149.
  • Survives the perfected Law of Lightning amplified through Vic’s Divine Staff 1187 1188.
  • Revives after Luffy kills her during an assault supported by Joy Boy’s stored Haki 1194.
  • Does not make her flesh indestructible: sufficient force, Haki, or spatial attacks can still cut or destroy her body 1121 1127 1147.
  • Resurrection remains painful; it does not remove the experience of death 1192.

Her longevity is also associated with the Perennial Youth Operation. Although characters initially debate the explanation, the narration confirms Sabo’s guess that she received it 1050.

Laws of Contract

Soul contracts let Imu exchange abilities with contracted subordinates and determine their lives or deaths with a thought. Contracted individuals bear a special pentagram 977.

Contractor Rank Granted Benefits
Trainee Holy Knight Access to teleportation arrays; no immortality 1103
Full Holy Knight Teleportation and immortality 1103
Five Elders The above benefits, plus extended lifespan 1103
  • Borrows contracted users’ abilities, including Gunko’s arrows and Mars’s black flames 1125.
  • Can lend her own powers to contractors 977.
  • Cannot train contractors on their behalf; their personal strength still requires their own effort 1103.
  • Borrowed abilities remain limited by her understanding of their underlying Laws and do not become perfected Laws merely because she uses them 1126.
  • Contracts also affect inanimate objects: she inscribes thunderclouds, cuts off Loki and Nami’s control, and commands their lightning herself 1138.

Laws of Demons and Black Turn Domination

Her perfected demon powers allow self-transformation, the conversion of others, and access to the Demon World 1181.

  • Demonization: Her trident and arrow-tipped tail can transform victims into demonic servants 1122 1126.
  • Mental domination: Black Turn amplifies negative emotions and aligns victims with her will while preserving their memories, intelligence, and combat experience 1184.
  • Absolute commands: She retains overriding authority over those she controls 1184.
  • Resistance: Strong will and Conqueror’s Haki can resist demonization; threats and emotional instability can undermine that resistance 995 1120.
  • Nika countermeasure: Luffy’s Drums of Liberation can counter aspects of her demon Laws even before he reaches the God Realm 1185.

Demon World and Pentagram Arrays

Her teleportation uses the Demon World as an intermediary rather than the Law of Space, which she has not comprehended 1181.

  • Transports forces through pentagram arrays and black flames 1103 1117.
  • Retrieves stored weapons through small arrays 1122.
  • Temporarily retreats into the Demon World to evade attacks 1183.
  • Summons native demons to reinforce the battlefield 1180 1181.
  • Native summoned demons are not automatically immortal; immortality requires her personal transformation of the victim or a deep soul contract 1182.

Possession and Divine Descent

Imu projects her will into other bodies, including Saturn, Mars, and Gunko 994 1015 1119.

  • Can deploy her own powers and borrowed contractual abilities through a vessel 995 1015.
  • Restores the Five Elders’ regeneration by dispersing hostile Haki from their wounds 994.
  • A possessed vessel is weaker than her true body and does not retain her full God Realm strength 995 1015.
  • Even in a vessel, her immortality resists the Conqueror’s Haki methods that work against ordinary contracted fighters 1015.

Haki

Centuries of accumulation give Imu exceptionally deep Haki reserves 1183 1193.

  • Armament Emission: Stops Loki’s lightning- and Conqueror’s Haki-coated hammer with one hand, then repels it 1138.
  • Conqueror’s suppression: Immobilizes or slows opponents across the battlefield, including Luffy and Vic 1194 1195.
  • Defensive coating: Protects against Vic’s perfected lightning and withstands a prolonged combined assault from Vic, Garp, and Uranus 1188 1193.
  • Breaking confinement: Uses Haki to escape Vic’s spatial seal 1183.
  • Weakness: Joy Boy’s stored Conqueror’s Haki breaks her defenses and leaves her trembling and vulnerable to follow-up attacks 1194.

Beast Transformation and Physical Combat

Her enormous beast and Human-Beast Forms combine extreme strength with speed disproportionate to their size 1144 1149.

  • Wields the hundred-meter Devil Trident in her transformed state 1146.
  • Fights through forceful, sweeping attacks rather than Vic’s precise combinations 1149.
  • Regenerates large wounds almost immediately when her transformation is combined with immortality 1149.
  • Initially retains some rust from centuries without using the form, expecting to regain peak control after roughly a dozen moves 1146.

Illusory Manifestations and Clones

Imu manifests figures and mythical beasts from illusion, including a Western dragon, and creates duplicates of herself 1143 1189.

  • Uses manifestations of historical powerhouses and beasts in combat 1143.
  • Can replace destroyed clones, but the number she can effectively deploy is limited by her ability to mentally control them 1189.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Devil Trident — A crimson weapon retrieved through a pentagram. It can change size, reaching its hundred-meter true form to bear the full force of a perfected Law. Its strikes can induce demonization, and it can block Vic’s spatial rifts 1122 1146 1147.
  • Crown — Worn both while her identity is concealed and when she reveals herself at Lodestar Island 913 1117.
  • Mask and ceremonial robes — Conceal her appearance during the confrontation in Pangaea Castle; her later cloak bears gilded patterns and luminous tassels 913 1143.

Relationships

  • Five Elders — Contract-bound rulers beneath her. She grants their privileges and controls their lives, but considers them replaceable servants 977 1103 1180.
  • Holy Knights / God’s Knights — Contracted enforcers whose benefits increase with rank. Their dependence on her reinforces her control over elite Celestial Dragons 977 1103.
  • Gunko — A contracted subordinate and possession vessel. Imu intervenes when she is endangered despite showing little concern for other servants’ deaths 1015 1180.
  • Joy Boy — Ancient rival whom she defeated. His recovery power inspired her immortality, while his Haki and preparations remain threats centuries later 1143 1178 1194.
  • Nefertari D. Lily — An original member of the Twenty Kings whom Imu condemns as a traitor after learning her full name 912 913.
  • Nefertari Cobra — Intended victim after witnessing her on the Empty Throne and confirming Lily’s connection to “D.” Vic prevents his execution 912 913.
  • Vic — Principal challenger to her rule and, through time travel, the black-robed powerhouse she fears. Her attempt to defeat him creates the circumstances for his later return at greater strength 1195 1205.
  • Monkey D. Luffy — Targeted as the new Nika and a possible successor to Joy Boy. Imu restrains herself until she determines that his current power cannot end her immortality 1008 1194.
  • Monkey D. Garp — A surviving God Valley opponent who later reaches the God Realm without her detecting it. She ultimately overwhelms him after releasing her full strength 1119 1193 1195.
  • Loki — Repeated enemy whose hatred stems from Harald’s death and Imu’s attacks on Elbaf. She later subjects him to Black Turn 1133 1183.
  • Rocks — Former opponent transformed into a demon after Imu exploits his concern for his family and amplifies his negative emotions 1119 1120.
